Old singer (Johan Liiva) > new singer (Angela Gossow)

Old AE > new AE
apart from the fact that she is hot...

I like angela's vocals I just think that weak death though AE may be it's interesting to hear a woman make that kind of vocal noise

Yeah, I have a pretty basic question. What's the Live Obituary, or Dead as it's called, album like? I've only had one personal opinion on it, which slided towards the good side.

It was pretty good actually the new bassist isn't up to much though. The new tracks they played sounded pretty good live but i'll have to wait till i've heard the new album to properly comment.

Dying fetus were also pretty impressive although i'm not a hige fan of theirs. And the other band was a local one called nailed who were pretty good actually, i wouldn't mind seeing them again. Jondur have you heard of nailed? what do you think?

The sound wasn't too bad actually, bit too much bass so certain things didn't cut through too well. Had better sound than some of the gigs at satans hollow though!!!

holy god, i was just sent this by a friend of mine, its in german so ill just post the german then basically sum it up in english right afterwards:

Bleiben wir also mal gespannt, was da kommen wir

basically it says there is a possibility of all of the members of at the gates current bands playing together for a few shows, and we all know what that means, obviously that is very very paraphrased by me because i dont feel like translating word for word, but if you want a full translation dont hesitate to ask.

Aye. One of them used to be in Blasphemer who were an ace death metal band in the early 90's before they changed into Dominion who were rubbish. Nailed are OK - fairly standard death metal.

I guess I'm out of touch then. School me. What defines Death Metal?

Not trying to get into a genre war here or anything, but Venom's first album was called "Black metal", and though I don't dare to delve any further back than 1982, I believe they were one of the first "Darker-than-Metal" Metal bands.

Dead Horse, I'm pretty sure they qualify as death metal. They were played on on a college radio show called "Death metal" back in San Antonio :)

The other bands are harder, heavier and sometimes darker than both Venom and Dead Horse, so why don't they qualify?

What defines Death Metal? Is it the music? The vocals? the message? What?

One of the age old debates. Venom is not, never was, and never will be black metal. They influenced a lot of the first wave of black metal, but they themselves were not black metal. And they weren't death metal either.

Being "heavy" or "dark" doesn't define the genre. There are tons of bands that are heavy, but are not by any stretch death metal.

Death Metal
Death metal is the opposite end of the spectrum from doom metal. There are a few different schools of death metal. Generally speaking though, the music is fast, aggressive, low. The bass line is usually more pronounced than in other metal sub-genres. The vocal style is trademark to death metal. Usually vocals are growled or grunted. Blast beat drums are very prevalent. The most common misconception is that death metal is all about death and gore and killing and the likes. This is most certainly not the case. While many bands do sing about this type of thing, there are tons of great bands that do not limit themselves to lyrics like that. Lyrics can range to include religion, spirituality, fantasy and beyond. The music can range from the very aggressive and brutal (Aborted, Iniquity, Suffocation) to the more melodic (Ebony Tears, At The Gates) to the very technical (Atheist, Cynic). Key bands: Lykathea Aflame, Mithras, Morbid Angel, Behemoth (older stuff was black metal), Opeth, Immolation, Blood Red Throne, Entombed, Unleashed, Sinners Bleed.

See this thread I made a while back.
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166577

Some bands in addition to those above:

Aborted
Carcass
At The Gates
Cryptopsy
Suffocation
Gorguts
Vital Remains

And browse this thread for tons of other suggestions, both death and black metal.

Apparently the new bassist palys the guitar riffs not the simpler bass riffs, so you'd be wrong there.

That is my favorite movie of all time. I have Mel Brooks autograph somewhere.

In other news, I need to reiterate the fact that Gorguts - Obscura is 100% awesome. It is now in my top 5 death metal albums of all time at least.

To 88fingers - Arsis are my love. Probably one of the best melodic death bands I've heard. Some people don't like them quite the same way I do but I think they're gre3at. The guitars are super melodic but also super good and the vocals just have this cool quality that could fit in black metal or death metal. My dad who hates metal really likes their guitars. Then the vocals come on and he goes away.

Try searching by album name then, for example there are less things likely to be named Litany than vader.

Or you could do a two word search either, like Vader Litany, and then it will return all things that have both words in the name.

Yes, the first I heard of Stripped, Raped and Strangled had Tori Amos on it. It isn't included on the album version, and sucks. Basically it starts out with something like "Hi, this is Tori Amos bla bla bla phone in if you've been raped, the number is 090-" music kicks in. Some other time in the song it has "rape rape rape rape rape" added.

Really? I would say Covenant is more generic than the first 2... still not a bad album though. Altars was groundbreaking for it's time, and Blessed... is kinda progressive, so yeah, I just think Covenant is more straightforward.

The girls I know are usually into more classic rock stuff, maybe a Metallica song they heard through a boyfriend, or punk/hardcore. I don't really know any into country.

The girls I know are usually into more classic rock stuff, maybe a Metallica song they heard through a boyfriend, or punk/hardcore. I don't really know any into country.

I learned today that everyone seems to look down on my music, and I have a reputation for listening to "Extremely hardcore music". Nobody wanted to tell me for some reason, but I could care less. I don't give a **** if they look down on my musical tastes. I also got accused of being a Satanist today too.
I get accused of being a satanist all the time, and a nazi, but nazi is cause I'm German not because of what I listen to :(

People think they're so clever when they're walking down the halls and pass me with "Hey Tyler, I'm Satanic!" or something lame like that.

I'm also part German, but I tend not to share my background information with anyone I see regularly, since it leads to pointless jokes.

Yeah, pretty much. I think some kids spread rumors about it too. Probably one of my friends, since I write some lyrics for our 'band', that they find Satanic. None of them have anything to do with religion whatsoever though.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it involves rumors...

I don't get people and their whole entire need to call people Satanic if they listen to extreme metal. I never got called a Satanist when I started listening to extreme metal, because I kept it to my self due to the fact that there was no metal heads at my school at the time. But my last year of school I started converting people over to extreme metal whom were into nu-metal and such.

And for some odd reason, I always got called a Satanist though when I listened to nu-metal in the early days of high school...never got that either.

And I only know one girl that knows any thing about extreme metal, because I got her into that as well. I got her into every thing except black metal, which is still good. Don't find many girls that listen to death metal and such...

Well...my b-day is finally almost over. I usually hate my birthday but today wasn't too bad. I still had to work, but when I got out my wife and I went to a nice dinner. She got me a 6 pack of Guinnes and a gift certificate to the local music shop. And her grandparents gave me $20. So I bought Behemoth - Conjuration with the gift certificate and 3 books with the $20. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara: Antrax, The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara: Morgawr, and A Tale of Two Cities. So all in all it wasn't too bad.

The Behemoth album is ok. It was mainly a filler album they put out between Zos Kia and Demigod. There's only 1 new track on it, 2 covers and then 7 live tracks. Not an essential album by any means, but if you're a pretty much rabid Behemoth fan such as I it's decent enough.

I've never had a reputation as a Satanist, as far as I know, but I think that's partly because although metal makes up the biggest part of the music I listen to, it's not along by any means. I also had pretty easy going people at school. Only slight anomaly to that is when I picked up Choronzon on the way into school one morning, and the most devout Christian we had (really nice girl, outside of talking about religion) caught sight of some of the track names and wouldn't talk to me for all of a day.

Yeah, they were, the gig was awesome.
It started with Necrophagist's replacement; a scottish death metal band by the name of Man Must Die, they were brilliant.
Dying Fetus were up next, which was great, then Nile were on, mostly playing some of their new material from the upcoming album.
If anyone was at that gig, the well built guy with spiked up blond hair standing on the stairs wearing a Berzerker T Shirt, that was me:D
I headbutted the wall a few times while headbanging, and came out of the gig half deaf, but I didn't care:lol:
I think I knocked a few chunks of plaster off the wall with my head.

I have to admit, they look pretty snappy in suits.

But I read this big thing on them once, they seems like idiots to me. They were all like "and then we found a new way to spread the word of satan...video".

It's like they're a christian band, but they just changed everything that said "God" or "Jesus" to "Satan". Pretty lame imo.

Yeah, they aren't even satanist, they do it for the shock value. Well good on them I say, nothing Slayer didn't do in the early 80s!

One word: Brutal:D
I can't exactly remember the names, as I was half deaf and half drunk at the time, and I had headbutted the wall a few times by accident, lol.

But it's the first time I had heard the band Man Must Die, they are absolutely brilliant, they're a bit like Dying Fetus.
The vocalist growls a lot using inhale method, and he also does some high pitched screams, almost Dani Filth like (no, don't let that put you off, lol)
Nile's setlist was something like:

Song from new album
Sarcophagus
Another song from new album
Ramses Bringer of War
Another new song
Chapter for Transforming into a Snake
Two other new songs

Arghoslent have great riffs coming out of their ears. Not so much death metal, but Grand Belial's Key are fairly riff-based. Carcass were always very good at riffs too, and Pestilence - Consuming Impulse definitely has it's moments.

Yeah, thats what I love so much about old skool DM. A lot of the newer stuff, while faster, heavier, etc., gets old really fast because most of them don't think about the riffs, just put together riffs that sound cool. Its like I can get all exited over, say Decapitated- The Negation for a while, then it starts to get boring because there's nothing to go back for. Once you've heard it, there's no need to go back and try to figure out the riffs and stuff. I love thrash because its almost always riff-based, so I was hoping someone knew of some modern day death-thrash bands or riff-based bands. So far my favorites are Arghoslent and Intestine Baalism (Morbid Angel too, I guess, but mostly their early albums).

IX Equilibrium and Promotheus are great albums, just not black metal.

My two favorite Emperor albums. They are symphonic-bordering-on-progressive black metal, I'd like to think. Prometheus just blows me away every time I listen to it.
