I'll pick it up eventually, I find I can do that with most things.

Hey CH, your avatar is still distorted. It does look kinda gr1m though. :)
So, I am deeply loving Emperor right now. I have "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk", and I saw "Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire And Demise" in my local record shop. However, I can get "In The Nightside Eclipse" for the same price (minus shipping, but I can get it as part of an order, if I save up) online. Which should I get first?

Somewhere, there is someone stupid enough to believe what that ebay auction said. And they're going to buy that tape. Kind of sad really.
So, with this new rep system will we still be able to see if a mod reps us? Now that I've lost my 6000 rep points that were all legit.
I finally realized that I'm not going to have money anytime soon so I broke down and downloaded Behemoth - Demigod. It's not too shabby. In some spots the vocals seem to go quite well with the music. In others, they can get annoying. Overall a pretty decent album though.

Some people say Venom and Celtic Frost were the first black metal bands.
They inspired it, but they weren't actually black metal as we know it today, especially Celtic Frost, they were more thrash/heavy metal than anything.
Venom had the occult/satanic lyrics but weren't black metal.
As far as I know, the first black metal band was Bathory.
When I was walking round town the other day, I heard this kid say "I heard some White Metal, it's better than that satanic black metal crap".
I had a strong urge to crucify him upside down.

Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry
Quo Vadis - Day Into Night (only because I've not heard anything else by them (apart from two unmixed tracks) so if someone can recommend a better album over my head, go for it)
Carcass - Heartwork /cliche
The Chasm - Deathcult for Eternity; the Triumph. Maybe. It's good, but it's not really full of energy, which is what I guess you're looking for.
I know it's also not technically what you're looking for, but consider Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris. It's Cryptopsy-style in brutality, but always mixed with some of the most melodic death metal I've heard.

I just downloaded their EP "Blastradius". It seems to be pretty good so far.
They're genre is "Deathcore", I'm guessing a mix of hardcore and death metal. They do it pretty well! I hate hardcore, so I I'm very serious.
They have no breakdowns, they have an early 90's death metal voice, their music is very thrash inspired, they have good non-repetetive melodies, their blastbeats don't bore the hell out of me like most other groups do.
They even incorporate keyboards in the music, but they're only there to support the ambient (nothing like Kalmah or Children of Bodom)

ninjamonkey's knowledge of Melodic/Atmospheric/Symphonic Death is groundbreaking. I do like some bands.
It is? haha, symphonic death?
So they're not carrying on as Windir now that Valfar's gone?
They are, but as the band called Vreid.
Bathory should do a good job of scaring the class. It's funny because all of my group are like the happiest and fun loving people in the grade. It's going to be so much fun.
ninjamonkey: it's a christian school :p
lol, why did they agree to do metal?
Actually there's some great Christian bands. Trouble and Place of Skulls for starters.
White metal is tr00er than some 7th generation Darkthrone rip-off.
And Phlebotomized. Not black, but death. And christian.
Mortification. They preached to a bunch of metal heads when I saw them.
Haha, they preached? incredible
It's just difficult for me beause I hate varg so much
but his music is good and is very similar to some of the BM stuff I have written myself
so I have a dilemma there

The other week I posted a thread in metal-archives asking what effects Vintyr (Basilisk, Hateful Abandon) uses on his voice, as he is my favourite musician at the moment, and has such awesome vocals.
The first reply was: "Flattering... and slightly embarrassing. I just use a delay pedal and a really crappy microphone."
I was pretty confused at this, it was posted by someone called "****off" with only 4 posts, but has been registered for years.
I PMed him, when I considered the posibility that he is actually Vintyr. Lo and Behold! It is!
(I can't be bothered explaning my proof that it is actually him, and not someone having me on).
So anyways, whenever I need help with my black metal project, I just ask my all time favourite Black Metal musician. :)

  Wow, I always thought that guy had a pretty unique voice. They should get the guy from Neuraxis for his replacement, he's kinda similar.

I forgot, I got an email from Tim or Dave (I'll go check who it was) of Revenant. He was just saying why the lyrics for PoaDW are inexistent.
EDIT: It was Hank, vocals/guitarist.
And why are they?
Oh sorry. I midunderstood that. It's because he lost the original copy, and the transcription in the lyric booklet on the album is completely wrong, and he hates the production on the album so he doesn't want to listen to it and transcribe it. I made a thread with the entire text of the e-mail in it, if you want to look that up.

How loud are your growls/croaks/etc? I wonder how loud artists go. For example, I heard Opeth's are very quiet, but I could see people going for an all out screaming growl. I'd like to develop a very sick growl, or something.

Inhaling growls are usually pretty quiet, obviously. My usual death growl is very loud, as is my raspy, black metal-growl.
However, my black metal shrieks... I could tear the bloody house down.

Never noticed your edit. Yeah I can do that too, I usually just do that for when my family is in the house and I am recording the song, so I can see where the vocals go. But they aren't really from the heart, so when I get a free house, I record over it with proper shrieks.

Ah yes. Looks good, goes for $200 on Ebay...I've always considered using the PC for any recordings I make. In case anybody knows not of this, The Berzerker records everything on PC...in the lead singer's house...
So far I am not involved with producing my own material - I have no goal of a record deal, and I am yet to produce any riffs, at all. I am interested in recording some material in the future anyway that's true to my heart, and perhaps something different.

That would be awesome. Perhaps a Lord Marrkh/Lord Ztevie Split 7" one day!
I am sick and tired of this. I write a load of melodic riffs that I become proud of, roughly program the drums and think that I am doing well, and can develop the song well.
Then at night I just hate how melodic it is and want to go for something darker and "nightmare"-ish sounding.
Stevie

Perhaps it is better to produce riffs at night. I understand it is best to find riffs in your head, rather than through playing around on the guitar.

Yes, post midnight is the best time for recording, unfortunately awkward because everyone else is trying to sleep. Vintyr said something to do with that being because of your senses being sharpest or something... I don't know. But you certainly do write the best, most "from the heart" material when it feels like everyone else around you is sleeping and you are alone.

For some early Death metal, check out Venom. They have been around since at least 82. I still have my original vinyl copy of "Black Metal". I had been listening to the likes of Ozzy, Priest and Maiden and friend of mine introduced me to Venom. I didn't know music could sound like that, and was instantly hooked.
Another band I like is Dead Horse. I can listen to their "Peaceful Death and Pretty Flowers" album for hours on end.
Other, more recent bands I like are Hatebreed, Skinlab and Lamb of God.
BTW, I'm new here. Yay me.

I guess I'm out of touch then. School me. What defines Death Metal?
Not trying to get into a genre war here or anything, but Venom's first album was called "Black metal", and though I don't dare to delve any further back than 1982, I believe they were one of the first "Darker-than-Metal" Metal bands.
Dead Horse, I'm pretty sure they qualify as death metal. They were played on on a college radio show called "Death metal" back in San Antonio :)
The other bands are harder, heavier and sometimes darker than both Venom and Dead Horse, so why don't they qualify?
What defines Death Metal? Is it the music? The vocals? the message? What?
