Can you give some kind of definiction of death metal?

We practice (or used to) every Friday. We did this with the windows open because we don't like the heat. The vocalist would scream his head off, I would rip the strungs out of my guitar and the amplifier would blast out noise accordingly, and the drummer would slam with all his force onto the skins/

My friend, who lives about two or three blocks away, says he can hear the noise and wonders where the hell it comes from.

Heh.

I am going to record a black metal song I wrote today, it is very Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger era sounding. I am not too sure about the stucture though, it doesn't really "go".

I have worried about that! After all I grew up listening to classical music (both my parents are professional classical musicians) and look how I turned out!

Unfortunately the downside of this is that I have decided to leave The River. It was a hard decision to make as I love that band and we're really doing well but family must come first and I simply can't afford to live in this part of the country (south england) anymore. Also my parents are in the north and we'll need their support. So as of May I'll be moving up to Macclesfield (near Manchester - Pete maybe I'll catch you in Manchester some time).

We're in the process of buying a house which'll be nice as some stability will be well needed (it has a cellar - can anyone say home studio?).

The River will of course continue (the guitarist plays drums anyway) maybe as a studio band though. We're recording a new demo theweek after next then there's two gigs in London (26th March at the Underworld with Reverend Bizarre, Brocas Helm, Ironsword and one other, and 5th April all-dayer at the Kingston Peel with Orange Goblin, Alabama Thunderpussy and a load of others) and then it's Doom Shall Rise in Germany on April 15/16th. And that'll be a fitting last gig for me.

Congratulations man. I would say it's bittersweet, having to leave The River and all, but then the kid'll more than make up for it.

Now I'm going to have to make it to one of those London gigs, before you leave. Then if/when they get a new guy in the future, I can talk loudly about how I saw them with their old drummer, who was so much better than this guy.

Anyway, not exactly death metal, but I got Watchtower's Control and Resistance album today. Anyone have any idea what backwards guitar is? Best I can think of is guitar tracked backwards, for some reason.

I´ve just had an idea:

How about we call ourselves after medieval charachters.I mean,we already have a "king"(and an executioner) so what about "the baphomet knight" or "the baphomet jester"etc.
The Baphomet Robin Hood sounds a bit gäy though

I call the "Baphomet Jester".

I always wondered about that. But if they grow up listening to the best kind of music from when they're babies, they're bound to realize that (mostly) everything else is laughable. So you should be set Jondur :thumb: Actually, kids probably would like power metal. Feed him lots of that. (ps. disregard everything I say, I'm 16 so my advice on parenting is useless.)

I like a lot of melodic death, like In Flames, their older stuff more but their newer stuff is pretty cool too i think though most would disagree I'm sure. I also like Arsis, which is a sick band, Children of Bodom have some good stuff, too. Those are really the most death metally bands I listen to, I will admit that I also like Mudvayne, System, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Tool and Killswitch Engage but none of those are close to death metal so yah.

Those Immortal Souls tracks were pretty good. I wasn't listening especially attentively, so I don't know how they'd hold up if I did, but as far as I could tell it was good melodic stuff.

The other one I didn't like so much. It was heavier and uglier in general, but the drums sounded rather bad half the time (sometimes sounded pretty good though). The vocals (the non-roaring ones) seemed to be buried somewhere in the background, too.

EDIT: actually, listening again, Yoda's Eye vocals don't sound so bad. Might grow on me, I suppose.

The front cover of my demo, drawn by no-one other than Yours Truly, looks like crap. It's just the logo for "Gorcrow," everything in black, and at the bottom it's the title of the demo.

Their music is some of the most brutal I've heard. So if you like EXTREME EXTREME music , then yeah definately. I keep saying this but I don't think anyone agrees. 'When Fire Rains Down from the Sky, Mankind will REAP as it has Sown' is their most brutal stuff by far. Check it out if you want.

I really want to get into Axis of Peridition. Everyone I know says their very similar sounding bands.

Say hello to Dave for me that mad cunt :D
Why, do you know him?
I doubt Dave would be around at the time of us recording, he isn't an engineer or anything, it's just Mick who runs it.
We want to get a most brutal sound as possible that rips people's heads off...Necrodeath is the way to go.
It will be a while before we record the demo yet, we've got a few songs together, and we are re-writing some off the riffs and lyrics.
We might not even be off to Necrodeath, we might not be able to afford it, first there's the recording fee which is something like £133 a day, which isn't bad at all, but transport down there and such.
We might just have to make do with recording it on my PC, lol.

I have to say, I really wish there was a remastered version of that CD, that more than any that I have in my collection, actually. It was the first black metal CD I had ever gotten/heard (I think I got it from Magicaltroll) and I hated the production. Since that time, I've gotten some Mayhem, Darkthrone etc. and I like all that, but I really dislike Nightside's production still. I think it's because there's some great riffing and vocals and lots of things going on, but it's glazed over by this obnoxious organ/keyboard thinger in EVERY song. The only song that doesn't have it is "a fine day to die" and Bathory did it much better, IMO.

Well Bill from Carcass used to be in Napalm Death and Jesse Pintado from Napalm used to be in Terrorizer. But not side projects. Pig Destroyer have no link to either as far as I know.

i just went and checked out nasum-inhale exhale. it doesnt sound much like what ive been thinking of as grindcore. could someone define grindcore for me? i thought i had it.

Nasum are pretty much definitive grindcore nowadays. Great band RIP Miesko

In case ya'll haven't heard it yet, here's a new Cryptopsy MP3. Sounds pretty good, especially with Lord Worm back, but I'm not too sure if I like the production. Good stuff, though, though its not as aggressive as NsV IMO. Hopefully the rest of the album is a bit more aggressive, but I'll get it either way.

http://cryptopsy.net/lost/mp3s/Cryptopsy_PreProd2005.mp3

Note: this is a pre-production demo not album quality. No doubt, bearing in mind how well produced An then You'll Beg was, it'll sound a lot better on the album.

That's good to hear. Some of the vocals reminded me of the "robot vocals" on "Focus".

It sounds like a decent song. The production I imagine will be far better on the actual album, though I hope they're not thinking of doing some kind of return-to-roots retro production.

EDIT: should really have read through to the last page before responding.

Great song, but I don't like the ever present hiss in the production or the way the riffing is lost behind cymbal crashes.
The "ever present hiss" or fuzz, or white noise, all the same (I think) is what I look for in black metal production. :p (as long as you can make out the riffs)

So I saw Suffocation, Misery Index and Behemoth last night.(Okay, Devilinside too, but they're not really worth mentioning.

Misery Index to me...were Misery Index. That was about my 6th time seeing them. It's getting a little old for me... they need a new album.
Behemoth didn't impress me at all. I thought they were much better last time I saw them, and I'm just not too into their new album. The way I see them right now... is that they're to 2005, what Arch Enemy was to 2001/2002. Huge hype around them, nobody will shut up about them on message boards, and in 2 years, nobody is gonna care anymore.
Suffocation were awesome... they played a great set with plenty of older songs. Better this time than they were last time.

Purchases in the city:

Razor - Evil Invaders
Napalm Death - From Enslavement To Obliteration
Suffocation - Souls To Deny(The show and a few beers convinced me to get this one)

Well, Behemoth have all this "ov" and "Christians to Lions" stuff going on... NIN aren't exactly the kvltest tr00est band around for them to cover. I don't see what was so offensive about what I said anyways, I was simply stating a fact.

ICB
02-24-2005, 10:11 AM
I don't think it was a bad thing for Behemoth to cover NIN. It doesn't have to necessarily be a metal song for a metal band to cover it. As long as it sounds good, and the band makes the song it's own, then it's all good...Hell, Johnny Frickin' Cash covered Soundgarden and NIN and they weren't exactly his genre of music...I know that was a bad example but...

It wasn't offensive. You were stating a fact yes, but you said it with the intent to mock the band, or as if you were trying to mock both bands. Behemoth has been a death metal band for years now. That pretty much takes away the whole "kvlt", "tr00" and "n3kr0" business right there. They just sort of stick to their roots with the corpse paint I guess. Bah, they'll never top Sventevith anyways. At least in my opinion.

Does anyone here who records music at home have the same problem as me? - Doing vocals in a house that isn't detatched.

Whenever I get a free house, I notice I still don't put all the energy and power into my vocals, because next door and anyone outside will still hear me. It sucks. :(
My neighbors can't hear me when I do vocals. After all, my house has walls, and so do theirs. Do you live in a townhouse or something?

Well, it's not doing much to be honest. Mainly because I've been too busy with coursework etc., and because I'm lazy. I've got some new riffs written, but I've not done anything with them yet. Soon as I do I'll post a link in here.

And I got the lyrics from Reaper Of Souls, which were written in 5 minutes, hence their craptacular nature.

Dusk moves to black, where white dots hath filled
Under the light by which mortals are killed
Fall to your knees

The innocents bled as the guilty had fled
Hiding in dark where their souls fear to tread
The kiss of death...

Seek refuge in trees from the cold of the breeze
Zephyrous terror where humans would freeze
Cringing alone

Scrambling away in unspeakable pain
Gods looking down on their lives with disdain
And struck them down

Guilty reap my soul...

Yeah, but that doesn't cover up the ****ty riffs and vocals.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the riffs were pretty boring.

"Shipless Harbor"

I take my rest as the sun dies a slow death
And the weight settles once again
Light burning sharp shadows on walls
And cleaving mind from body
The stars watch and seem to know
The sky weeps for this
Life I'd given had become my own
Blissfully consuming, yet taken from me
Yes, Death waits for those who've lost hope
As all too temporary release takes hold
That voice permeates all else
In the shade of dreams we speak once more
And that smile forgives all
