I have no clue where Fresno is, :p , but if its anywhere in the vicinity of Ocala, Florida, then maby.....that would be weird . Good luck man! (if not)
Ehhh, I highly doubted it was you anyways. Fresno's up in kinda northern California.
Other than that, I MIGHT be able to record a sorta BM song I've been working on tonight, if I can fix my effects pedal. It kinda blew up, so I'm having to nigga-rig it now, but it might work. I can't do BM vocals for my life, but the song is mostly instrumental anyway, so it won't be that bad I hope. So tonight or tomorrow night I'll try to get it in the Audio Arena. I'll have to record digitally to Audacity, so there goes any Tro0-ness or N3cr0-ism I have, but whatever.
EDIT: And when the hell did I get stars???

What is the difference between black metal and death metal?
What is a good black metal band?
Dancin' Man
02-18-2005, 08:29 PM
Production and vocals are two of the most notable differences. Black metal is more raspy while death vocals are more gutteral (usually).
Good black metal = Emperor, Borknagar, The Elysian Fields, Dissection (last two are more Melodic BM)
RiceMonster
02-18-2005, 08:38 PM
Bass is usually louder in Death metal. The drumming differs as well.
More good black metal = 1349, Marduk, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Judas Iscariot, Abigor, Summoning.

You should try Gothenburg sound of Melodic Death metal. I have a feeling you're talking about later In Flames. My suggestion - go to metal archives and search genre - Gothenburg

I got None So Vile by Cryptopsy when i was getting into death metal, and for some reason, I didn't like it.....I still don't really. I got a Nile CD a little bit ago, and even though it's a similar style of music, I like it MUCH MUCH better. So try Cryptopsy, and if you don't like it, then try other stuff

Cryptopsy are great. Since you seem to have broad tastes, I'll recommend Necrophagist(tech death), Lykathea Aflame (Most melodic DM band ever), Quo Vadis (thrash death prog), Behemoth (began as BM and have evolved to DM), Mithras (Great DM) and Naglfar (Melodic BM)
Naglfar will probably be the easiest of those for you to enjoy but all the rest are really worth checking out, especially for getting into Death metal.

As for Incantation, I thought Onward to Golgotha was supposed to be their best. That's what I downloaded, anyways.
Onward is indeed a classic in the Incantation catalogue, however, Diabolical Conquest is far and away my favourite Incantation album.

Yeah, I could do a money order, but I'd rather just use credit cards because they're a lot faster. Last time I used a money order for something, it took about a month to get here.
By the way, I'm still waiting for someone to tell me a good - e-store to get music off of. :)
Also, I'm gonna have to say that "When Humanity is Cancer" is the best Anaal Nathrakh song ever.

i was wondering... what is the general opinion of dimmu borgir in the metal world? i get the feeling that people view them as a pop band with cool vocal effects and a drummer, but i don't know...
if this is the case, could i have some reasons? im not trying to start an arguement, but i've heard some emperor and mayhem(thanks to the chosen ones), among other bands of the like, but i fail to see the "ripping off" on dimmu's part. Sure there are some similiarities with emperor but from what i've heard, dimmu borgir has better production quality, catchier riffs and beats, and just as much of a dark and good sound. All im looking for is a more concise explanation of the dissent for dimmu borgir.

well to reply to FF's post, It took me a while to get used to Deliverance, the music was cool to me, but Mikael's growls were killer to my virgin ears! I threw the cd in the bottom of the pile and didnt listen for atleast 4 months, one day i was snooping and popped Deliverance in the player, and it was all of a sudden a spiritual thing man, like "why the heck did I not like this before??"
I seen them live in Tampa Bay *last year*, and was blown away! I havent been able to really find any other death metal to my liking like Opeth did for me. But Opeth popped my cherry, now I listen to all sorts of heavy vocals.

So what I really want for this mix is something that will get people who are generally not fans of metal into metal without giving them stuff like Black Sabbath, Metallica and Slipknot. I want to get people in using Opeth as the lightest but not excluding bands like Arcturus. I want songs that really show off what you can find in metal, despite having harsh vocals. Lykathea Aflame is a good example of this overall.

In my opinion, i would say "where dead angels lie" is a better dissection song to introduce people who are not into metal to than nights blood, althoug nights blood is the better song in my opinion.. The only other change i would make would be the Arcturus song, because that is totally unrepresentative to how they sound like and what the band brings to the table. Perhaps something like Nightmare Heaven, or The Chaos Path is a better example.

yeah, harsh vocal bands, is not what arcturus is good for really, although the radical cut is an excellent song, and is actually the song that got me interested in the band in the first place, after picking up the sham mirrors, i reailzed there is quite a bit more to that band. Arcturus is a hard listen though for people who arent into anything even remotely different (even within the metal scene), which is why i fear they do not get the recognition they diserve.

yeah, harsh vocal bands, is not what arcturus is good for really, although the radical cut is an excellent song, and is actually the song that got me interested in the band in the first place, after picking up the sham mirrors, i reailzed there is quite a bit more to that band. Arcturus is a hard listen though for people who arent into anything even remotely different (even within the metal scene), which is why i fear they do not get the recognition they diserve.
Same with the Emperor album Prometheus. I think it's amazing but because it's not strict black metal it's not recognized the way it should be. I'll go with of Nails and Sinners for Arcturus I think.

Do you? Why don't you name some then instead of drone, stoner and slow death metal bands.
Doom is slow but just cos its slow doesn't mean it's neccessarily doom.
You want slow and heavy? You need Thee Plague of Gentlemen!
Lets have a look see shall we.
Electric Wizard = Doom (despite what most think)
Sunn O))) = Drone Doom (Remember drone is practically extreme doom)
Burning Witch = of course they are ****ing doom!
Tyranny = Funeral Doom
Teeth of Lions.. = Drone Doom
Unearthly Trance (I'll give you that one)

I have worried about that! After all I grew up listening to classical music (both my parents are professional classical musicians) and look how I turned out!
Unfortunately the downside of this is that I have decided to leave The River. It was a hard decision to make as I love that band and we're really doing well but family must come first and I simply can't afford to live in this part of the country (south england) anymore. Also my parents are in the north and we'll need their support. So as of May I'll be moving up to Macclesfield (near Manchester - Pete maybe I'll catch you in Manchester some time).
We're in the process of buying a house which'll be nice as some stability will be well needed (it has a cellar - can anyone say home studio?).
The River will of course continue (the guitarist plays drums anyway) maybe as a studio band though. We're recording a new demo theweek after next then there's two gigs in London (26th March at the Underworld with Reverend Bizarre, Brocas Helm, Ironsword and one other, and 5th April all-dayer at the Kingston Peel with Orange Goblin, Alabama Thunderpussy and a load of others) and then it's Doom Shall Rise in Germany on April 15/16th. And that'll be a fitting last gig for me.

Haven't got a basement. Just the attic room where the computer is. That's how I record. Guess it isn't too bad here tbh. Just this old guy next door. This neighbourhood where I live is full of rap and hip hop knob-jockeys walking about 'dissing' my preferences (on several occasions). I guess thats my problem with shouting as loud as possible. But you're right. **** em. They can rot.

Heh, this weekend my band is recording our demo, and the house I live in is very small, and the walls are thin, and my room is right next to the family room, so my parents are probably gonna freak out when we do the vocals. My guitarist/vocalist's vocals are ****ing insane, and way loud too. Its gonna be an interesting night.
And about the demo, I don't know how much we'll be able to record. We're recording directly to my computer with Audacity, so we'll have to do each instrument alone. We won't have drums either because the drummer is staying up in Fresno, and we have no way to record him either. But we're looking at a 45 minute - 1 hour long demo, and its mostly death with a large thrash influence. It probably won't sound as good without drums, but it will give us a look on how its gonna be.
I'll be uploading them onto Soundclick this weekend most likely if anyone's interested.

That's the way they had ought to be recorded. It will come out better that way. Sorry about the drummer situation. At least you have a drummer :P
Once my computer goes in my room, I'll be recording the Mithryl demos, and it looks to just be me and my bassist friend doing the recording... I guess I'll use a drum machine and do the vocals myself for now. Oh well.

Heh, no basement. Everything is recorded in my bedroom, where the 8-track is.
My house and my neighbour's are enemies. The girl living there is the same age as me, and her boyfriend, brother, mom, mom's boyfriend can usually be found there.
We are enemies mainly because of the noise that comes from her house. They are constantly blasting totally gay hip-hop etc.
That is why it is kinda awkward, us always complaining about noise, then me screaming my head off.
Do you guys do vocals when there are other people in the house? I sure as hell don't. My family are going down to relative's this weekend, so I plan on writing/recording heaps this week, 'cause they are going on friday and coming back on saturday, so I don't have alot of time. :(

We practice (or used to) every Friday. We did this with the windows open because we don't like the heat. The vocalist would scream his head off, I would rip the strungs out of my guitar and the amplifier would blast out noise accordingly, and the drummer would slam with all his force onto the skins/
My friend, who lives about two or three blocks away, says he can hear the noise and wonders where the hell it comes from.

Opeth is death influenced, but not a straight deateh metal band. SOAD and Therion are not death at all (excluding old therion)

I'll learn something on this forum :P
What about Moonspell? I like them to, but not so much like Opeth, and the other stuff :D
Can you give some kind of definiction of death metal?

I am going to record a black metal song I wrote today, it is very Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger era sounding. I am not too sure about the stucture though, it doesn't really "go".

I can give you a great definition of death metal in one song:
