news of the weekend: I like Windir
That's a point, I've been meaning to ask (you all, in general) is Valfar, Ein Windir any good?
It's been a while since the last time I checked the reviews and now I see nothing interesting. Have I missed anything?
The forum is now no longer for reviews. That section of the site is now a separate site; www.sputnikmusic.com. Check around the stickied threads (and those any that are in the Cd Reviews forum, rather than the archive) to fill yourself in.

From what I've read about it, it's a two disc thing, kind of half best-of, half a tribute to Valfar. One disc is a best of, and the other is new/unreleased material, live material, and covers of Windir tracks by bands like Enslaved (can't remember the other bands).

generally I think a long setlisted live album Is the best way to get into a band
as It is generally a better best of than the conventional best of albums which are mostly record-company chosen tracks
gonna get tomb of the mutilated, butchered at birth and wretched spawn next ...
meat hook sodomy and severed head stoning are cool songs

I disagree, i find that to actually be the worst. The good songs on it are REALLY REALLY good, but the not so good songs on it are quite boring.
In order from my favorite to least favorite it is:
Borknagar
Epic

The Archaic Course
Qunitessence
but all of the albums are quite fantastic, so overall it doesnt matter what one you pick up.

Also, I got 1349's Liberation, and although its good, Beyond the Apocalypse is better. The people on M-A must be on crack saying that Liberation is better. BtA has much more variation and is much more sophisticated IMO.

Anyone ever heard Luciferion?
That's some wierd stuff. It had a tag on it that said "Para los fanaticos de Deicide" (for fanatics of Deicide) but it definetly doesn't sound like them.
It has a lot of synth, but in a strange ambiental way. The vocals aren't nearly as brutal as Glen Bentons, but the music is good. It is nice and fast with a lot of changes, but there is a lack of real good riffs... which is compensated by some awesome melodies. The thing about the melodies is that they're not soft melo-death type things, they're more like Deicide's solos... and they're always accompanied by that wierd synth thing.
It's very dark music, I'd say much darker than Deicide, but in a more depressing way (?como se dice funebre en ingles?). It's very somber, and the samples add this strange atmosphere that makes me have these very spiritual thoughts in my head...

Back on topic, i saw Enslaved last night, and jesus, that may have been the best live show i have ever seen. On top of that they played a very very varied set, going all the way back to the emperor split, to playing about half of Isa. I hope they come through germany again before i leave here in july
Whoa, I would kill to see Enslaved live. How do the operatic/clean vocals sound live? I've always wondered.

Flawless. The way they do it is they have the lead singer and the keyboardist harmoinze them quite well.

Its weird because he has a great singing voice, then also has one of the best BM vocals IMO. For some reason I had thought they didn't play live anymore, but thats cool that they do. I'm gonna have to see em sometime.

Depends. Follow the Reaper is the one that I least dislike (out of three I've heard), but I'm told the one I haven't heard (Something Wild) is better. But I don't much care; three albums of material that doesn't really interest me is enough to put me off them.

Depends what you want to do with it. If both guitars are playing something similar, just pan one hard left (eg all the way to the left) and the other hard right. This gives it a stereo feel to it, as even though you may be playing the exact same part, the two recordings will have slight differences to them. Another advantage to doing this is that then you can have the bass dead center and it will stand out more. Generally, do the rythmn track twice and pan one hard left and one hard right, then bass and any leads go down the middle.

It will be a mini-cd of classically oriented piano music and it is going to be recorded live in one day only. There will not be any other musicians performing with me on this record (hence why I call it my solo album) but it's still something I have been wanting to do for a while and I finally got the opportunity to do it in between working on other projects.
Speaking of other projects, there is a lot going on right now as far as planning and scheduling of different recordings, and we'll have some big news to announce very soon. Also for all you Arcturus fans out there, they entered the studio this week.

All great Power Metal with fairly clean vox there

Quite a few of you seem to need to fix your avatars after all this crap over the last couple of days.
Anyway, has anyone heard of The Circle of Zaphyon? I can't remember anyone mentioning them, and now that there's no search feature to check..
I joined another forum to keep myself busy recently, and picked them up there. There's a couple of mp3s up for download at http://www.thecircleofzaphyan.com, and I thought they were pretty good. Haven't listened to them much though, to be honest.
Which forum?
And why is the search gone?
Luciferion is fantastic.
So uh, guys, I don't know if it's been mentioned on this board or not, I don't want to search, and it's worth mentioning again anyways. Somehow, Willowtip got a bunch of Weakling's album Dead as Dreams. So we should all totally buy it for the low low low price of $10 US(or $12 US for you non North Americans)...and while you're at it, get the new Rotten Sound for the same low low low price. Value!
This ad was brought to you by the letter A, and the number Nine.
That rules man. I may have to order it. I already have it on my comp, but having the album would be cool.
Yeah i cant wait.
Also, speaking of solefald, has anyone else heard Cornelius's solo project Sturmgeist? I downloaded and was pretty disappointed, i guess he isnt much without Lars at his side.
Yeha, I got it after you were askign about it to me on AIM. I also didn't like it much.

Mostly everyone pans 100% to eithewr side. Sometimes they have a track in the center too. SOmetimes they have 4 tracks. For example 1 track 100% right, and another 80% right (with a slightly different amp sound) and the same on the left.

Hmm, I am going to use my guitar's effects board for some of the vocals on my goregrind stuff. What do they usually use, just lower the pitch? Any other cool things I could do?
I do something similar with some of my band's grind stuff, except I don't usually pitchshift, I do the growls and Lee (other vocalist) does the higher pitched ones.
if you're using a pitchshifter, don't do it so low you sound like a toilet, like **** & Ball Torture, some german p0rn grind band do:lol:

glad to see its not dead guys. Ive got to be honest with you all though; metal is on the backburner for me.
Phish is where im at, heavily. Very heavily. Im so addicted to this band its not even funny. Phish, and Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Disco Biscuits, Allmans.
im a jamband whore! i need to dance!!
i cant explain it, but being able to dance to a 20 minute groove is THE single most liberating, exhilarating, and downright wonderful thing on this planet.
im sorry if you guys feel let down, but this music makes me feel so alive.
and i know that you guys are level headed enough to understand and not discriminate: im dealing with some real, real, real rough times now. really rough.
i hope none of you ever get addicted to opiates. ever. if you are, please go get yourself help now. this **** runs your life over. it makes you a hollow, empty shell. its horrible.
power to music, and life!!!
for those of you addicted to free live music, www.momadance.com has all the free Phish shows you'll ever need.
i suggest Sugarbush '95 and the Clifford Ball, as well as any show from 93-97.

Lyrics vary alot. I'm not too keen on the whole "I like gore let me describe brain surgery in detail and then mutilate a virgin" type of thing, but it's definetly a genre-defining trait or even all that common among death metal bands, really. Arch Enemy's lyrics tend to be more anti conformity/individualistic, for example...Opeth's lyrics are on a level all their own. Chuck's lyrics with Death tended to actually be pretty poetic alot of the time, and he strayed away from the whole gore thing most of the time.
A common theme I get alot in death metal is disillusionment with the world. Whether it be the way humans treat eachother, how we live our lives, etc...many death metal artists seem to believe that alot of people don't live life to its fullest.

Hey Happy Marshmellow, sent that stuff yet?
After a million delays... no, not yet :upset:
But there's good news. I've made the first 7 (of 20) discs. I should have all the copies of everyone who asked for one in the mail and on their way by tomorrow.
The problems have been my limited time to get things done. Last night I finally had some time to make the discs, and I noticed that the mixing on the second song had the guitars way too loud... so I had to re-mix it.
But nevermind! I decided to take out the hidden track, I took another listen to it and thought that it's way too ambiental/stoner for the demo. Plus, it's a bit half-assed.
Final tracklisting:
1. Fear The End (industrial death? I don't like this song much)
2. Doused in Kerosine (gore metal)
3. Kill For Jesus (death metal)
4. Ragdoll (very short melodic death song)
5. The Curse of Godless (pompous gothic black metal parody track)
6. Graves of the Fathers (Cryptopsy)
All of my originals are under 2 minutes long, the CD is a little longer than 13 minutes.
Also, I made the disc with my CD burner at home... with crappy CD's. Oh well... I guess that makes me nekro.
So tomorrow! Finally!
