Was it like Darkthrone-style production? Or was it just oddly done? I haven't heard it for myself...
The guitar tone has fairly high mids and doesn't sound tinny like most bands go for. It's a much more organic sound. Extremely heavy though.

Gah I hate that high mid guitar sound. I know that scooped sound is heavily associated with Nu-Metal and a lot of other "uncool" genres but some bands would sound 10x heavier if they just scooped their ****ing guitars.

Yea, it's true......It sounds a little better if you just blast the bass on your CD player/whatever. What I hate about some production is when the vocals completely overbears the guitars, or likewise.

The WBTV is a very full sound, almost like a wall. Very crushing effect. Now for a production that sucks big time, check Spheres by Pestilence

And MetalFan to say the production on Worlds Beyond The Veil is "mediocre" then it just shows how little you actaully listen or know about production values.
I disagree.

Well, for my next CD run, I guess I'll need some:
Theory in Practice
Spiral Architect
Nile (or whatever brutal death is better)
Any suggestions for particular albums?
Also, I was talking about this with chosens, but the 9th song on "In the Nightside of the Ecipse" (I think it's called "a Fine Day to Day"), what era/what does it sound the most like from Emperor? I know it wasn't originally supposed to be on the album, so it may have been made later?

It's called "A Fine Day To Die", originally a Bathory song from Blood Fire Death

Well Spiral Architect only have the one full-length (so far?), A Sceptic's Universe. For Nile, my preferred album is Black Seeds of Vengeance. But then I've not heard most of In Their Darkened Shrines.

Definately more Lucid Interval-esque, but very melodic. Reminds me of Biolich in some parts actually. I'm not entirely sure if I would like a whole album of this yet.

I saw Arghoslent mentioned earlier, and I just have to say that they are probably one of the best melodic DM bands I've heard. Very good stuff.
Can anyone recommend me some Enslaved/ Wood of Ypres- style bands? I'm trying to get my friend into good metal, and these seem to be the bands she likes so far. So any bands with melodic, acoustic, folk-ish, whatever things in them, lemme have em.

I haven't heard Enslaved or Woods of Ypres, but your "acoustic, folk-ish" description matches Agalloch pretty well. I also want to check out Arghoslent, I've heard good things.
I just made a playlist of stuff that I need to listen to more often and put it on shuffle. I hate getting into a rut of listening to the same band over and over, but it happens a lot. :(

Ok, I always thought whether an album was produced well (technically produced well, not whether it fit the album or created a nice atmosphere or whether I liked it) was a fact thing and not an opinion thing. Apparently though, you have proved me wrong b/c you think it was produced well (again, produced technically well, not just produced in a good atmospheric way). For example, people can enjoy Darkthrone's black metal production b/c it fits the album well/creates a good atmosphere, but if you say it is technically produced well, then you are just wrong.
Anyway, I don't like the Worlds Beyond the Veil production because the whole thing sounds very muddy to me. In addition, I think the drum sound (not the beats, the actual sound) is terrible, and even more so on the drum tracks available without the guitars and vocals and bass. And I don't like the guitar tone. I don't think it sounds crushing, I think it sounds very honky. The distorted guitar tone just sounds very muddy to me. It's not clear or cutting.
Despite all this, I still like the album. However, I like Forever Advancing ..... Legions more.

Yep,it´s off John Coltrane. We rearranged it a bit so that everybody could solo but pretty much stuck to the original.
Schnappi´s the song with the "little crocodile" and we pulled it off with Rita(usually saxophone) doing the little girl vox with a sax fill in the chorus and Flobo and me putting a standard poprock rhythm behind it on guitar. We´re also thinkin´about doing either a Ska or "Frank Sinatra" version of that song.Too bad our sax and drummer didn´t want to do the pornogrind version :D

Everyone will say pre-Dead, and some of them will only say it because pre-Dead is supposed to be tr00er. Half of them can't even hear Dead through the production. ;)
Their production with Euronymous on vocals (early, early, early) is even more raw, and it is quite frankly, balls. That must mean something, coming from me.
So whatever, but if you think such clearly produced albums like Transylvanian Hunger, and Under a Funeral Moon are raw sounding, and you find it hard to hear certain instruments in the mix, leave the tr00 **** for a while and buy Deathcrush or De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Don't buy anything after those albums though, they truly are bollocks.

Slough Feg are in equal amounts genius and madness. We played a gig with them in London and they were ace live. There were only 60 people there but they played like it was 600. Nice chaps too.
YOU'VE PLAYED WITH SLOUGH FEG!? Jeez, you're such a lucky man, please give some more details!

Yeah - We supported them last year in London. Was a really fun gig to play - they were really nice chaps, interested in our music and we had a good laugh with them. Excellent musicians - Scalzi really can play the guitar you know.
Played with Solstice too. But they supported us! Mwuah hahahaha! Which was a mistake cos they destroyed us! But then they did play for so long over their stage time that we only had time for three songs (note: that still makes half an hour!).
Played with quite a few good bands actually. Solstice were the best musically (but then I love Solstice), Anathema was the biggest crowd (but then they soundchecked for an hour and half - mainly dicking around playing bad Metallica covers - so we barely had time to get our stuff on stage before we had to play, Akercocke had the best stage presence, Necropsy were the best swedish band to come from near Manchester, Hecate Enthroned had the most ridiculous demands (wouldn't arrive in the daylight), The Blood Divine sounded most like a boogie-woogie band (bad keyboard sounds!) and Honey for Christ were the best laugh.

Off topic...but...wish me luck. I'm interviewing for another position within my company in about 10 minutes. Right now I'm a Designer in the Engineering department. I'm interviewing for a Research Designer in the Product Development department. The position was not advertised or posted at all. It was strictly by nomination. It's cool that I got nominated at all, but I'm a little worried. Most of the others who are interviewing for it have been here for 10-20 years. I've only been here about 4-1/2!

Jons current band, The River: http://www.foreshadowproductions.com/audio/theriver.mp3
this is a sample from a song called "Opaque" - unfortunately it is a remastered version done by a label and it sounds quite trebly. I preferred it when your trousers shook because of the bass!
And this is Jon's old band, Unsilence:

From what I remember about those two albums, (before I accidentally deleted them :() Transylvanian Hunger was more of a simplistic, grim, recorded at 2am in a forest on an answering machine kind of thing, and A Blaze in the Northern Sky was more like thrash with a lot of "AHHH!!!" and blast beats. Both are good in their own ways, so it is up to you, depending on which style you think you'd prefer.

I guess it was the lack of image but hey they're a lot more tr00 - I remember one of their old guitarists telling me an amusing story of proper Norwegian style church desecration. Check out Immortal then, one of these albums would do : Sons Of The Northern Darkness, Damned In Black, At The Heart Of Winter.
I think Mayhem and Darkthrone is rushing into the genre a bit to fast...
lol yeah, I just listened to the 3 Mayhem tracks from "Live In Leipzig" that I've had for a while (Funeral Fog, Freezing Moon and. Well, I'm very very scared. That Dead guy is going to give me nightmares. His vocals make him sound like some dude who is going to come and kill me! I don't think I'll be listening to them very much, the dude sounds like Satan.
Is there much black metal that doesn't sound like it's coming from hell? I like that song on "The Sham Mirrors" with the vocalist from Emperor, "Radical Cut". So yeah, I'd prefer black metal that isn't totally evil...I am a christian after all, so music that's pretty much anti everything I believe isn't something I'd want to be listening to regularly, unless it's really really incredible.

Just check out Immortal first, they have more lyrics about the north and vikings and such and have more of a really cold feeling to their music.
And if you would like any samples, ask me on aim or msn and I can send some stuff.

It's too bad they don't get the recognition they deserve. Their stuff is hard to find. I've got Through The Impure Veil of Dawn and Wings Of The Nightstorm, but those are the only 2 I've ever seen. And I got those from eBay. Wings Of The Nightstorm is an ACE album.

Man if those bands are death metal (not very good with the genre thing) count me in.
Sepultura
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Meshuggha
Lamb of God
Slayer
Arch Enemy
Vader
Mushroomhead
(I saw In Flames on the board. Are they really considered death? They don't sound very much like the other bands people mentioned.)
Some of them may not be death and I'm sure I listen to some I didn't think of, but oh well screw it **** it and **** it to hell.

Mushroomhead is not death.
What I've heard from Meshuggah leads me to believe it's more industrial than anything, but no opinion on that.
Lamb of God is very weak death metal. Sepultura was death metal back when they started. Arch Enemy is melodic death.
Slayer is thrash, no doubt about it.
But you hit the nail on the head with Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, and Vader (even though earlier Vader was much more thrash, now they are one of the best Polish death metal bands)

I hate Vader's vocals though. The singer is just awful. He sounds like he's constipated.

At least they got a good choice for replacement guitarist. Is it permanant or just for the tour? If he's permanant, that'll be great because Gorguts has one of the coolest styles in DM IMO.
And yes, Enlsaved are usually pretty headbang-able. The drummer is a monster and has a really unique style of mixing extreme styles and folkish styles. Great stuff.

Death - Usually more technical, lower growls, no synths.

I just love whoring this, because it's easier than explaining it myself.
Death Metal
Death metal is the opposite end of the spectrum from doom metal. There are a few different schools of death metal. Generally speaking though, the music is fast, aggressive, low. The bass line is usually more pronounced than in other metal sub-genres. The vocal style is trademark to death metal. Usually vocals are growled or grunted. Blast beat drums are very prevalent. The most common misconception is that death metal is all about death and gore and killing and the likes. This is most certainly not the case. While many bands do sing about this type of thing, there are tons of great bands that do not limit themselves to lyrics like that. Lyrics can range to include religion, spirituality, fantasy and beyond. The music can range from the very aggressive and brutal (Aborted, Iniquity, Suffocation) to the more melodic (Ebony Tears, At The Gates) to the very technical (Atheist, Cynic). Key bands: Lykathea Aflame, Mithras, Morbid Angel, Behemoth (older stuff was black metal), Opeth, Immolation, Blood Red Throne, Entombed, Unleashed, Sinners Bleed.
Melodic death metal
An obvious sub-genre to death metal, it's becoming popular enough that I think it deserves it's own little section. Basically, it incorporates more melody. What it lacks in brutallity, it more than makes up for in melodic grooves. The vocals are typically not as harsh, there may or may not be as many blast beats. Key Bands: At The Gates, In Flames, Ebony Tears, Carcass (Heartwork mainly), Aeternus, Amon Amarth, Kalmah, Norther.
Black Metal
My own personaly favorite and particular area of expertise. Black metal and death metal are quite closely related. While death is focused on the shear brutallity, black metal is focused more on creating atmosphere. The music is typically higher pitched with less of a bass line. Some bands incorporate the use of keyboards or synthesizers. The production is quite often pretty bad giving it a raw or "trOO necro" quality. Tremelo picking abounds, blast beats are not as prevalent as in death metal but are still there quite often. The vocals are generally high pitched shreiked or screamed. The music can range from the "trOO necro" bands (Darkthrone) to the more melodic (Naglfar) to the very sophisticated orchestral atmospheric (Arcturus). A common misconception about black metal is that all the bands are Satanist and sing about Satan. While many bands are Satanic or anti-christian (note the distinct difference), that is not the case with all black metal bands. Lyrics can range from Satanic to fantasy to witchcraft to just about anything. Many black metal bands are very paganistic in ideology and see the christian church as an intruder in their native lands, leading to the very deep seeded hatred for christianity. Unfortunately, black metal also has a sub-genre known as NSBM. National Socialist Black Metal. While I do listen to quite a few of those bands because I like the music, lyrically many black metal bands are very racist against not only Blacks or Jews, but anyone of non-aryan decent. Key bands: Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Nargaroth, Emperor, Bathory, Immortal, Beherit, Graveland, Gorgoroth, Moonblood, Samael.

Gothenburg is the same as melo-death.
It's power metal with some death influence.
Melodic Death is Death metal with power influence. Basically just death metal with more melody than usual thrown in.
