The first two grindcore effeorts are a little poorly produced, though Descanting the Insalubrious and Heartwork are the best. Check out Swansong for a really heavy blues/metal feel as amost of the tracks are written by the bassist/vocalist or Wake up and Smell the Carcass for some great unreleased stuff and John Peel session recordings. Though for me, you can't beat classics like Corporeal Jigsaw Quandary, The Sanguine Article and Incarnated Solvent Abuse from Descanting....

I like to listen to -
Entombed
In flames
At the gates
Shadows fall
Darkest hour
The berzerker

enslaved
The rest of those bands arent worthy to be in the same country at the same time as enslaved, let alone on the same list.

That was easily 2 years ago, when i was getting back into metal from getting out of hardcore. I was stupid and naive then. Now i am educated and pretentious. If you do not want to let me live down liking R2R, then fine, i can take it. Although i thought I had made it pretty clear in the recent past that the only in flames album worth listening to is lunar strain.

Napalm Death - Scum, From Enslavement To Obliteration (also get the Radio 1 Sessions CD if you can find it)
Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction, Symphonies of Sickness
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Nasum - anything really, most of their albums are very similar even for grind
Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer, Prowler In The Yard
Chances are, if you know you like grind, you know some of that stuff. That's just a grind essentials type thing I guess.

Yes, where the tickets are advertised in the shop it says "Nile" then in smaller letters underneath "Dying Fetus and Necrophagist"
Nile are the main reason I'm going, but Dying Fetus are pretty good too. I haven't heard Necrophagist as of yet.

I've been gone for a while because my guitarist came down from Fresno :D and we got to jam for a while. We finally layed down the music for a song I wrote right before he left called "Christrotted." His vocals are so good on it, its awesome. They're kinda like Tucker-era Morbid Angel, but a lot more bottom end, more gutteral, and overall a lot better. He said he's gonna get a Boss digital recorder soon, and next time he comes down we're gonna record our "demo." Our "demo" is about 12 songs long, and almost 2 hours of music.
Other than that, I've been listening to Morbid Angel's Formulas Fatal to the Flesh. Its probably my favorite, for how experimental and weird it is.

What does anyone here think of Khanate? There's just been a review of them done, and it's a fairly negative one (1/5). There's a song for download in the review though, and I quite liked it.
On a vaguely similar note, are Esoteric worth checking out?
And, to anyone who's heard the Oneiric Dirges in Mono EP, does anyone else get a tremendous sense of cold from listening to it? Seriously, just listening to it, on anything but headphones, my forearms feel intensely cold. It's awesome. Anything similar to The River to recommend?
Jondur
01-13-2005, 05:30 AM
Instead of Khanate get Burning Witch. Much better in my opinion. Corrupted and Grief would be other one's to check.
Esoteric are pretty extreme. Not entirely my cup of tea. Have a listen though - you may like them. Harsh vocals (through many effects), very slow droning riffs, loads of keyboards etc.
Personally I can't think of any bands that sound like The River. We've had comparisons to Warhorse and Mourn but personally I think we're closer to St Vitus.
Vitriolic Rage
01-13-2005, 06:41 AM
Yeah, your band The River are almost one of a kind, great stuff.
Who takes care of all the keyboard stuff and all? I've seen you on metal-archives and it doesn't say.
Jondur
01-13-2005, 06:52 AM
You mean the piano bit at the end of "Opaque"? Well the studio engineer did that. I can't imagine there being any more keyboards on any other stuff. If there is - I'll do it.
Vitriolic Rage
01-13-2005, 07:38 AM
No, I've only heard Amber.
I mean the beginning bit of Amber with the weird synthy noise, or was that all done on guitar with effects?
Jondur
01-13-2005, 07:49 AM
That's just guitars! Just distortion and a hell of a lot of feedback! We can drag that out for minutes live if we don't like the look of the audience!

whats with all this new age melodic death metal ****? or post harcore *** raping music? The only categorizing of music that I do is good, and bad.
Jesus C. Heinrike, you guys make it sound like something that would be on a pepsi can. super cherry diet lime pepsi with vanilla. When it should just be called pepsi.
how can you put a label on death metal. If its implying that its lyrics are related to death, satan, or anything opposite of "the flowers and the posies"; and/or that their guitarists use demonic scales or japanese pentatonics then slayer, COB, PAntera, Evergrey, all fall into the same category, even though they sound completely different.
If its implying that the overall sound of the band is "Death sounding" then Atreyu should be death metal because everytime i hear them I want to die. Someone give me some justification on why you guys label things with such long names. And why the **** it matters if Slayer is Post hardcore thrash metal or if their a ****in boy band, its good music.
Love,

Well, for one thing, genres make it easier to ask for, identify, or recommend music. What would happen if someone came into the forum, asking "I want good bands." Everyone has different ideas of what good is, so their suggestions wouldn't really help the person asking.
And also, if you found a new band and told your friend about them...
"Hey, person B, I just found a new band! [generic band name]"
"Congratulations, person A. What kind of music do they play?"
"Good music."

bands that i consider "death metal" include cannibal corpse, cradle of filth, and all of those wierd nothern european bands where they wear black and white make up, armor, and carry huge swords and take pictures of the band with blood pouring out of their mouths. a good friend of mine listens to this trash, and has tried to show me tons of bands and videos, and i find that the best of em can shred like freaks, but is that what constitutes good music?

Lets face it, you're a stupid twat. You don't now what death metal is so there is no reason for you to give your opinion on it. Cannibal Corpse are Death, I'll give you that, but the rest are not. CoF is gothic/early black, and "those north european bands" are black metal. As for shredding like freaks, most black metal is not shred at all, it is usually basic riffs and blasbeats. As for what makes it good music, the atmosphere and the scenes and imagery it creates in your mind makes it as good as anything.

well, although i wouldnt have reccomended LTE, they are pretty good, and obviously dream theater go hand in hand with them. It really does depend on what kind of stuff perks your interest though. For example, if you like jazz, a band like Cynic would be right up your alley because they play a very strange combination of death metal and jazz, and make it work. After Cynic was long done, a couple members got back together for a highly progressive instrumental band called Gordian Knot, but it isn't very metal (yet still an excellent listen).
if you are into stuff with more ambient kinda stuff in it, which i would say is a decent possiblity if you like floyd, then more of an avant-garde kinda thing would probably be more suited for you. The best, in my opinion, would be a band called Arcturus, but i would stay away from their first album if i were you, it is much more black metal sounding. Hand in hand with arcturus would also be the bands Winds, and Age of Silence.
If you are into extremely bizzare and almost sporadic drumming, then a band like Spiral Architecht would be what you would like.
However if youre looking for interesting song structures, and don't mind songs a bit on the longer side, then I do reccomend the german band Disillusion.
Last but not least though, I could not bypass any progressively styled reccomendation post without mentioning the album "The Focusing Blur" by Vintersorg.
You have some options within there, and i cover a pretty wide range of what can be found if you look in the right places, but please don't just dimsiss all metal without giving it a try.

I've heard that bands like Burzum and Darkthrone aren't good bands to get someone into Black Metal. I'd suggest one of Immortal's later releases (At the Heart of Winter, Sons of Northern Darkness) or an Emperor album (In the Nightside Eclipse, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk).

And, is Melechesh a black metal band with power metal influences, or a power metal band with death metal influences?
(something of a stupid question, I know)
Melechesh is black metal! And good black metal too. They're originally from Isreal, hence the middle eastern inspired riffing in a lot of their stuff. Djinn is their best album IMO. If you like them you have to check out Absu as well. These 2 bands go hand in hand. You can not check out one and not the other. This is an official rule that if broken will negate your n3cro status and reveal you as being untrOO. :thumb:

The "50 best-selling albums" list is passable, but for some reason it has Evanescence on it. I suggest you (pretend to) try buying an Evanescence CD when you there. If they don't throw you out for untr00ness, beat them over the head with a flaming inverted cross.

Lord Gore are a great band. Very heavy, tri vocals, slow crushing riffs, fast crushing riffs...some of the grossest lyrics too.

Also, I have a short story for ya'll. Over the weekend, my guitarist was here, and we started looking up Christian DM bands. Oh man, I've never laughed that hard in my life. Christian DM (that I heard) has the most unoriginal, boring, and worst music I have ever heard. A band in particular is Noiz. They have some free MP3's on their site, and the lyrics too. Thats the second part. The lyrics are worse than a 2nd grader's poetry. The funniest part was the vocalist gurgled out "I love Jesuuuuuuuuuuuuus!" or something like that.

I didn't know you played piano Per Ardua! I wish I could play guitar as good as I used to play piano. I took lessons for about 7 years and did all kinds of local and state level competitions. I could have gone to nationals on a few occasions, but my parents weren't able to shell out the money for me to go. I haven't played in a long time now but if my wife and I end up building a house this year I'd like to get a piano to go in it. I just don't have room for one (or the money) in the house we're in now.

Very nice...
I have a piano and all, but I don't have a clue how to play. I plan on taking piano classes and such in college though this up coming term.

Yes, 10 years is a long time. I used to do recitals and things like that but now i'm more of a casual player. I don't take lessons for it anymore.

5 years guitar, 10 years piano.
Yngwie is probably a piece of cake then.
Edit: I'm arranging Sorgens Kammer for guitar right now, what a pain in the ***.

Corporal, i can see where you are coming from in saying that the song is kind of dragged on. In partial i agree with you, i'm hoping vocals will partially fix this.
Vocals will help that situation a lot.

Yay! More classical players! I haven't played piano, but I have played cello for 14 years (I'm 17 at the moment). Over the last 6 months or so I haven't played seriously so lots of my technique and stamina has dropped. I also play trumpet and **** around with the guitar ;).

That's what I thought. Some people get upset when you think they are younger than they really are around here though :)

Ah yes, Nile :thumb:
Go with "In Their Darkened Shrines", but "Black Seeds of Vengeance" is a good bet too.

I would say Black Seeds of Vengeance, but then, I haven't yet heard all of In Their Darkened Shrines.

Wow you guys started instruments early.
Ihsahn, you started cello at the age of 3? wow.
As for Nile, I prefer "In the Catacombs..." to their others.
Yeah, In The Catacombs was a solid album.
Any news on a new Lykathea Alflame (or Lykathe) album?

They're supposed to be recording, but the website's been under deveolpement for ages, so no one knows anything about it. I an interested in how it will sound though, seeing as how Tomas is the only member left from Elvenfris.

Mardy said a while ago, in the review of Elvenefris, that he'd heard that the new stuff isn't very good.
