I absolutely adore Moonsorrow, almost everything they've done. Thier new album is quite good, and still very long and epic.

On another note, I was listening to some Psypheria that I got from Ninjamonkey and was pleasantly surprised to find that the intro to the second track was the main motif from Bach's "Little Fugue" in G minor... I'm really getting into this Psypheria so far, though the keys seem a bit out of place sometimes.

Yeah, I know this guy who's english teacher was one of the guitarists in Psypheria. He said that he's stopped playing metal and is playing classical now. haha

Death metal rules. here's a few I like:

Arch Enemy(amazing band, and the lead singer is HOT!!! what more could you ask for???)
What more could I ask for? How about getting rid of Angela and bringing back Johan 'Liiva' Axelsson?

In Flames - melodic death, and was not even close to black metal in any way ever.

You have been educated.

Man, I've been feeling so untr00 lately as I've been listening to a lot of Rush. Exit...Stage Left is amazing.

Other than that, I've been getting a bit more into Doom Metal and getting back into Black Metal. Right now I'm looking for more bands a bit like 1349, that have the aggression and rawness of the older BM bands, but actually sound good too. Any suggestions?

I've never heard 1349, but I've heard good things about them. Is it true that Frost is their drummer? Could you give me a description of their sound?

As for new bands that have the rawness of old BM, but sound good, try Abyssic Hate or Goatsblood (sludgy, fvcked up doom/ black metal)

Yeah, Frost is their permanant member and is ****ing AMAZING on the drums. They have very atmospheric music, but its very raw and aggressive with no synths or anything :thumb: and is right now probably my favorite BM group. Its kinda hard to relate them to any groups, as I don't know very much about BM, but the music reminds me of some Immortal I have heard, and the vocals are your standard BM vocals, but are pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions too.

Frost is the man! I love his style on Satyricon, it really stands out as original. Have you seen that Satyricon DVD from 2000? Frost is such a tripper, just the way he is on the road doing day to day things.

Thanks for the info on 1349, I'll keep an eye out for them for sure!

I've been thinking the same thing for a couple weeks now I just keep forgetting to mention it. I'd say wait until after the holidays. That way we'll most likely have new cd's we can include tracks from, and we're not rushing around trying to fight crowds at the post office. Maybe wait until like the 2nd week in January?

Moonsorrow is awesome, but it just sounds a bit weird because of the finnish lyrics, if you understand them. I might like them even more if the lyrics were norwegian or swedish so i wouldnt understand every word.. Its just because finnish is not like english, it just doesnt sound very good in death or black metal. uhh i cant explain

yeah man i dont get what youre saying at all. Then again I know nothing about finnish other than it is not an indo european language. The finnish itself seems to flow with the music well though, even though for all i know the lyrics could be about leprochauns dancing under rainbows while making sweet love to a christmas ham. Then again, with Henri in that band, that might not be so out of the ordinary.

hmm.. yes it does flow with the music, but it just sounds odd and i cant.. aaa, its impossible to explain. The lyrics are fine, if you look at the translations from darklyrics.com they seem alright in english, but in finnish they sound a bit dull and to be honest a bit funny.. but nevermind. to you it sounds different than it does to me..

I'm not a big fan of them either, Ihsahn. I'll listen to them here and there, and Muhammed is extremely talented, but I'm certianly not shitting my pants at it as many of the death heads do because music that focuses so much on technicality just doesn't engage me.

Though I admit they have their moments.

I managed to snag some mp3s of the Mortem EP, Slow Death, in order to answer my own question, and its quite good. Riffing is kinda blackened in some places, songs are short with the longest one being 3:33 long but the vocals are somewhat ****ed. They're masked under a wall of distortion and reverb, and the first time they kicked in I was having a hard time figuring out if they were vocals or some weird guitar or drum effect. Its kinda funny that this band ended up evolving into Arcturus.

Cirith Gorgor fill an especially unique niche in black metal, and there's isn't really anyone that sounds that similar to them, although I do know some bands who might sate your appetite for aggressive black/death metal, namely:
Axis of Advance- Evanescent Judgement and Nix the Sphere are good places to start, as well as all of the Strike album.
Sigrblot- Not as bombastic or brutal as the above bands, but same intensity with great melodies and speed. Crisis of Faith and Sacrament are two of my favorite songs from Blodsband. Probably my favorite black metal band of the moment.
Allfather- Some of the most intense black/death metal out there. The riffs are well-written and extremely well complimented by the huge and destructive drums behind it. I currently only have the Promo 2001, which I love, but their newest, Weapon of Ascention, is out in January, and the samples from it sound great.
Hate Forest- One of the best things to ever come out of the Ukraine. Battlefields is probably my favorite release, but Purity and Scythia are also great. The last EP, Resistance, was also very good. Our Fading Horizons is a good song from the Battlefields era, where Domination from Purity represents a more basic style, without the atmospheric flair of Battlefields.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but all excellent bands, none the less.

I haven't heard any of the stuff off the new album yet, is it any good?
I know they've released lyrics for one of their songs off the new album, but that's because it's already a poem by some old poet who i can't remember the name of.
I sometimes try and decipher AN lyrics, but it's almost impossible, like with Gilla Bruja.
Speaking of Gilla Bruja, has anyone here heard them?
Death/grindy slugdy industrial doom stuff, it's great.
I wouldn't have thought they had lyrics, sometimes you can hear him scream the title of the track, other times you can't even hear that. And no, I haven't heard GB.

How about Anaal Nathrakh? I haven't heard any of the bands you listed so I'm probably pwning myself but they are fu.cking intense BM.

It's a different style of black metal. While Anaal Nathrakh is indeed quite intense, there are so in a different way than Allfather. Anaal Nathrakh using very raw production on fast blasting drums with rather chaotic guitars and vocals to achieve their level of intensity. In contrast, Allfather have precise riffs and drumming with relatively clear production, but the music in all forms is very complex, and even concussive in the drumming aspect.

The other kind of trade is what I have in mind, where you send (via traditional mail) a CD of yours to another guy and after he receives it he will hopefully send you a CD of his own and the opposite. (eg my zos kia cultus for your close to a world below).

For example, I searched the thread and here is a tracklist of the cd I sent to Per Ardua:

Faustcoven - Annointed n Flames
Craft - World Of Plague
Moonblood - In A Bloody Night Of Fullmoon
Blodsrit - I Vantan Pa Dod
Frozen Shadows - Adrift In The Supulchral Snow
Nattstrype - As The Past Stands By
Setherial - Among The Flames
Wulfhere - To The Mountains Of Shadow
Bethledeign - Legions
Vardoger - Footprints Of Thunder
Lucifer - Watching The Christians Burn
Axis Of Perdition - Reflections Of The Underdark
Primordial - The Heratics Age
Forefather - The Fighting Man
Thus Defiled - A Crimson Vision In The Blade Of Shadowfire
Sinners Bleed - The Ludo Game
Ebony Tears - Harvester Of Pain
Grimfist - Primal Aggression

They are done using traditional mail. Someone makes a cd, takes it to the post office and sends it to the other MXer.

I'll check 'em all out.

Thanks. :thumb:

When in the mood I love some Folk type of music. Especially fantasy-based music, like music based of LOTR, stuff like that.

Also, electronica can be really good when you're high. Seriously, nothing is better than having a strobelight and some pounding techno beat while you're high. Its like it increases your thinking capacity, for me at least. Thoughts just flow across your mind, and its so great.

A lot of dm / bm heads like different styles because they can relate to them and just because the genre necissarily isn't metal it does represent some beautiful melody. Thats why you see some bands incorperating folkish elements into harsher catagories (ie: Ulver, Opeth)

On topic yes I am a bm / dm head! :D

I was at a party last night. I brought my computer, and I requested Nile - Execration Text. It was played after some crappy rap song. I heard the opening of it, I was all like YES!!!

So I went to the dance area, and started headbanging. Within 10 seconds, a random mosh pit occurs. It was awesome. Too bad all you could hear of the song was the drums and the growling.

I also played Pakanajuhla by Moonsorrow. No mosh pit there, but lots of people looking confused or headbanging.

all death metal sounds exactly the same. the crowds at shows suck and no one in the band does anything, they just stand there and headbang

Headbanging is doing something. And the very first part of your statement is just wrong.

In conversation with many fellow metal heads who've listened to death metal and black metal for years, I've found that without exception, every single one of them loves some kind of folk/industrial/electonica/drums&bass music.

I remember when I first got into metal a few years ago met some black metallers and they actually were into electronica too.

I'm really more into jazz/fusion than electronica.

I've recently started listening to instrumental groups that have such influences. My latest discovery is Uthull. They dont play metal and dont have a guitarist (bass-drums-keyboard/piano) but I really like them. Do you know any instrumental jazz/fusion groups?

I love Vomitory, to whoever suggested them. One of the few non-technical DM bands I can stomach

someone else agrees too...

They are currently violently ripping off my skin and eating it while raping my dead family

:p

Although the stuff they play is quite common I find it VERY entertaining!
