Their first CD.... Roadrunner heard it, and signed them. Some of the tracks were remixed and added to other songs... and others were used on Soul of a New Machine.

well boys here it is.

Greg Pittz review of the "In Their Darkened Shrines Tour"

me and my friends pulled in Winners's parking lot about 2 hours prior to showtime. there was already some people there. when the doors finally opened at about 7:45....i went right for the shirts. yoinked myself a Nile and Hate Eternal shirt. they were ****in 25 bux!! ****!. i was expecting more like 12 or so. anyway, after that i went right up to the middle of the stage. a drum kit was setup with Hate Eternal stickers on the kicks and i thought "wtf...hate eternal's opening??" anyway....then a bassist came onstage and started shredding as a warmup...it looked like Jared Anderson but it was the guy from Origin.

Origin:

wow. ****ing...wow. Origin are the new kings of tech-death. i had the opportunity to be right in front of John Longstreth as he was playing. wow...like...wow. the dude is beyond human. lol it was funny, the entire time he kept playing with his tongue piercing...pulling out between his lips. he gets the goofiest faces when he plays...his face looks like *staring down at kit* "wft am i supposed to do with this???" anyway....the tri vocalist attack ruled. the guitarists shredded.....and their bassist is disgustingly amazing. they played a bunch of new songs...the only songs from their debut that i could remember were "sociocide" and the amazingly awesome "disease called man" i couldnt refrain myself from jumping into the pit during disease called man...its just such a killer song. i wish i hadnt almost now b/c i would have gotten to see Longstreths world record blast beat on that song lol.

Hate Eternal

ok, now....Webster's dictionary has been updated. the words Anger and Rage now have new definitions. the new defitions are "Erik Rutan" and "Erik Rutan" respectively. never in my life have i EVER seen someone play with so much rage and anger and hate and...wow. the dudes ****in mouth opened up at least like 3 or 4 inches...he could have easily swollowed the entire microphone. during their set i was half in the pit, have watching in awe. they only did one new song "King Of All Kings" and i managed to yoink the setlist after they left the stage...which reads as follows: Sacrilege, Catacombs, Praise, Obscure, Servants, By His Own, Creed, Dogma (such a ****ing awesome song), In Spirit, Darnkess, and King Of All Kings. actually...i think 3 of those are new songs...heh who cares. Hate Eternal ****in slays. Derek Roddy is a blast to watch (pun intended...heh). Rutan was sportin a red bc rich ironbird (hmm...i think someone had an influence on him..heh). after "Praise Of The Almighty", Rutan looked straight into my eyes, pointed, and yelled "this next one is for you people, in the ****ing pit. lets see some crazy **** started" and then blasted into Nailed To Obscurity. let me reiterate my early statings: never in my life have i ever seen anyone do ANYTHING with as much rage as Rutan. its ****in weird...i thought the dude was gonna have a stroke onstage or watch a vein burst in his neck. ****in amazing.

Arch Enemey

pissed me off. for one, i was sooo dehydrated and thirsty from the previous 2 bands...that i wasnt in much shape for their set. i was right in front of Mike Amott for this one...and if i felt compelled to do so, i could have grabbed his junk from those gay ****ing tight leather pants he was wearing, or knocked him over off his high heels. gay. they came on, Angela Gossow coming on last of everyone...and acted as if they were Twisted Sister playing at MSG. they all look funny too. lol. they ****in played ridiculously fast, blasting through 7 songs in roughly a half hour. not once did Gossow or any of the other members acknowledge any of our devil horns or outstretched hands. that pissed me off. gossow didnt have any makeup on either, so she looked....iffy. her body is ****in great tho lol. all in all, i didnt enjoy arch enemy's set. they only did 1 old song off of Burning Bridges, the rest was from Wages Of Sin. its up in the air if id ever pay to see them again.

now...the colossus that is..

NILE

let me put it brief for you people. Nile=WOW. i watched Karl set up his mammoth guitar rig...the dudes ****in crazy. fat too. lol. nothing against him. anyway, they opened up with the brutal "Smashing The Antiu" ****in killer. Sanders pointed his guitar at me during one of the solos and i grabbed onto the end of its headstock. very very cool. next up was one of their new ones, i forget the name. my bassist for my band yoinked their setlist, and i forget the order of the songs. this is what i remember them playing: Smashing The Antiu, Barra Endinazzu (or however u spell it), Ramses Bringer Of War (\m/...broke my hand on the monitor during this one), Stones Of Sorrow, The Black Flame, Serpent Headed Mask, Defiling The Gates Of Ishtar, Sarcaphogous, Churning The Maelstroms, The Blessed Dead, Black Seeds Of Vengeance, Destruction Of The Temple (the closer). thats about all i can remember. i couldnt count the number of times during this set that i was giving the devil horns, screaming...looking at Karl or their new bassist...and theyd look right back into my eyes and would give a devilish grin. soooooooo amazing. sooooooo ****ing awesome. the sound was perfect. everything was awesome. during the chant part of "Black Seeds Of Vengeance", Rutan and the singer from Origin came onstage to yell "Black Seeds Of Vengeance" along with everyone else. definately very cool. during just about every guitar solo that Sanders did, my hand was right by his giving the devil horns, almost fuelling him with the fire to shred. after each time of this, he'd look right down at me and ****in smile. very own. the set slayed. i donno if ive ever seen a better concert. definately THE best lineup ill probably ever get to see in a club. at the end of the set, Tony from Angelcorpse (now nile drummer) came down and shook my friends hands and we talked for a minute, complimenting him and what not. very own.

afterwords, we went outside and i got all my cd jackets that i brought (3 nile, 1 origin, 1 hate eternal, 1 arch enemy) signed except the arch enemy one (pompous bastards) and hate eternal (they were all sleeping on the tour bus). very awesome. talked with Sanders and the new Nile singer for about 20 minutes.

thats about it...im just almost finishing recovering from this show...lol. taken about 3 days so far. heh.

Nile=Own

Aah Long time no post! I've been in germany you see.... At Wacken!!!! Thought you might like to hear what it was like... if not, move to the next post!

Arrived at 5.30 Thursday evening after a 26 hour coach drive - I've already been drunk and hungover once, and the rain is pouring down! I borrowed a mates tent (the soft git decided to fly - wuss) but soon found out that he'd forgotten to give me a vital piece of the tent - ie the bit that kept the water out! This meant that there was at least half an inch of water in the tent. Nice! I decided the only way I could sleep in that was to get unbelievably drunk. So I did! There were bands on the Thursday night including Blaze, Doro and Rose Tattoo but it was raining and I don't really like any of them so I stayed in the beer tent.

Friday: Unfortunately I missed Vomitory, who impressed when I saw them earlier this year and Fleshcrawl due to a massive hangover and the need to sort the tent out. So the first band of the festival for me was the mighty Dying Fetus!! Insanely technical and brutal as a particularly brutal thing, they impressed far more live than on record. An excellent start and the metal market sold out of their records very quickly. Aah the metal market! Two huge tents, packed with CD's, Vinyl, Tshirts, videos etc all selling at about half of what we pay in the UK, yes it's a nirvana for the record collector! Next up were the ridiculous Metalucifer! funny for 5 minutes and then I left. I also saw some of Destuction and Pungent Stench before hunger got the better of me. After some tea, I took a place to see Bruce Dickinson who was the same as he is with Maiden - plus he played "Revelations"!! Which was excellent. It was then off to a sweaty tent stage to see Irelands finest, Primordial. A great show and an excellent atmosphere - dark and smelly. We emerged from the dank confines of the tent, expecting to take a leisurely stroll up to one of the open air stages before My Dying Bride came on and then to watch Candlemass. But imagine my horror to see Candlemass's backdrop on the stage! They'd changed the running order! We ran like mad but they had finished before we even got there!!! I was gutted. Anyway after some swearing, MDB came onstage and played a stellar set - everything you'd expect really. After that came some serious drinking and then we watched Warlord (because a friend is a huge Fates Warning fan and their drummer was playing for them) but immediately wished I hadn't. Not my cup of tea! I watched more bands on the Saturday but I've got to do some work so I'll post some more later (if you're interested that is.)

Indeed I was the one who brought greg to the nile show (i know im a bit late with this reply (yes i stille xsist)) Origin But on a brutal show interacting with the fans quite a bit. Hate Eternal took the show in some instances, great band (I got Derek Roody's autograpgh drum stick hahahahahahahahahah) Arch Enemy I had a problem with Her, she paid no attention to the fans Ignored everyone, atleast the the brothers on guitar and the bass player were in your face while playing solos interacting with you letting you know your the reason they are there...then we move on to Nile...>:) great show, absolutly great, even though Winners ****ed up there sound, it was hilarious to see Chief Spires Kick one of there PA's. Chief was definatly in your face, i even hit his bass a few times head banging, but it was all good. Also i got Karl and Chief Spires autograph so it was a goooooooooood ****ing night

Until Next Time

Wacken Part 2!

Again after waking up with a massive hangover (kind of a festival theme for me!) I made my way to the festival site to see Amon Amarth who were awful - OK the songs are quite good but they really are not very good live. Sloppy, out of time and except the singer, totally lacking in stage presence. Next up were the excellent Macabre! A great band and great live. A mixture of grinding Amercan death metal a la Incantation etc and hilarious nursery rhyme sections. Each song was preceded by an explanation of the serial killers modus operandi. By now the heat had got to riduculous levels and I ran away in search of shade as at this point my ever so English deathly pale complexion was heading ever more into lobster colouration! This mean I mised Nuclear Assault and the amusement that is Immortal live. After some *ahem* light refreshment I returned to see Vanden Plas who aren't probably applicable to this thread being, as they are, a prog band along the lines of Dream Theater. But I liked them anyway. I watched the end of Exodus which was entertaining enough but doesn't sound right without Baloff. I ignored most of Hypocrisy because I think they're second rate (although they have a few great songs) and not very good live. Bay Area thrash legends, Heathen were the next port of call and were excellent - the touch has not been lost! Cannibal Corpse put in their usual workmanlike but enjoyable performance. Unfortunately, as always, their ongoing problems with the German authorities meant that they couldn't play anything off the first three albums. Which of cours meant half the classics were missed but I enjoy the newer material as well so it was a good set. While the vast majority rushed to witness the phenomenal popularity of Blind Guardian, I made my way to catch some old school swedish death metal in the form of Unleashed! A quality set from one of my favourite bands, including crowd participation! Only in Germany could a death metal band do cheesy arena tricks such as holding competitions between parts of the crowd to see who could sing the loudest! Seeing as Blind Guardian were playing a two hour set, I had no problem in catching the end of their set. I must admit they're not really my cup of tea but it was fun seeing the Germans go crazy! The reception for Kreator was also frightening and they repaid their home crowd with an excellent set and were the band of the festival for me. All the classics: Flag of Hate, Extreme Aggression etc.

So there you have it, Wacken Open Air 2002. Someone sold their soul for good weather on the two festival days and it poured the day before and the day after! My favourite bands were:

1) Kreator
2) Dying Fetus
3) Primordial
4) My Dying Bride
5) Macabre

If you live in Europe you really should go at least once!

Jondur
08-15-2002, 09:13 AM
The first 3 albums are banned in Germany due to censorship issues. And the police send someone to each CC gig and yes they can tell because apparently they tried introduce one of the old songs as a different song but they still got a letter warning them that if they ever did it again they'd be prosecuted! Crazy but true!

Angela has a good reason for not getting involved with the crowds, if you ask me... at the beginning of the tour she did all that, and in return was severely disrespected. It must feel horrible for a female to be up onstage playing for a mostly drunken male audience, more than half of which are chanting, "TAKE IT OFF! TAKE IT OFF!" every night... which is precisely what was happening. If you ask me, she is just disgusted with quite a few people, and rightfully so.

You my friend are a fairly well rounded individual in that you like mainly melodic death metal and some power/thrash. You should also think about checking out the following:

Eucharist
Acid Death
Demons and Wizards
Solstice
Dissection
Dark Tranquility
Abominant
Primordial
Arcturus
Ominous
Moonspell

All these bands have a high melodic content but are still recognisably Metal. If you wanted to go abit more off the wall and less out and out metal perhaps some: In The Woods might float yer boat

I don't know if anyone else heard this, but Morbid Angel guitarist Erik Rutan has left the band to pursue Hate Eternal full time. I found this on www.morbidangel.com:

Erik Rutan has announced he is leaving Morbid Angel in order to devote himself entirely to Hate Eternal. Erik began playing guitar with Morbid Angel in 1993 and has played on three of the band's albums, as well as numerous national and international tours. In 1996, Erik began forming Hate Eternal, a blistering Death Metal band that takes technicality and brutality to new levels. In Hate Eternal, Erik fully expresses his own musical and lyrical ideas, handling vocals and guitar, and the majority of the songwriting. Hate Eternal's debut album, "Conquering The Throne", was the high-water mark for Death Metal in 1999 -- a furious yet precise assault on the senses. Hate Eternal's second album, "King Of All Kings" is now finished and is set for release on September 16th in Europe and September 17th in the US.

Erik had this to say about his decision to focus all his energies on Hate Eternal:

"Being in Morbid Angel for the past nine years has been the greatest time of my life. To play in my favorite Death Metal band of all time has been a tremendous honor. I want to thank Trey and Pete for all the great years and all they have done for me, and all the fans who have supported me and will hopefully continue to support me in the future. It is now time for me to stand on my own two feet with Hate Eternal."

See Hate Eternal on tour November 5 - November 28 with Cannibal Corpse!

I honestly don't see what's so amazing about Morbid Angel. Sure, I like some of their stuff, but I don't find them THAT amazing. Maybe I'm just not that interested in that part of metal (whatever Morbid Angel is considered...). Please, tell me what is so amazing about them. The guitars and drums are good and fast, but the bass isn't that great.

Maybe a few more classics will convince you. Oh, and to be fair, the bassist is the singer, so that explains the basslines.

It's ok but I agree with Obsolete about Morbid Angel, they are very overrated by so many and I can't see what makes them so great at all. They have bad bass play, boring vocals and sloppy guitar play and the drums are so triggered that they sound computer generated and the songwriting is pretty avarage nowadays. Even Kelly Shaefer of Atheist called them untalented 10 years ago and as usual he was right. Cradle of Filth is much better, they are the true legends of death metal.

Mick7 - Don't bother reading his posts and don't let him get to you. (Have we still got that ignore function?).

Obsolete - Morbid Angel took Death Metal to a whole new level with their debut album "Altars of Madness" and with each new release they've strived to push the boundaries of the genre. I can honestly say that bar "Gateways" I consider every single album to be a classic. On "Formulas Fatal to the Flesh", while not their strongest album, they managed to add some really quirky, melodic sections - especially on the second half of the album. I'd find it hard to have a reasoned discussion about MA because I've been listening to them for nearly 10 years now and they're part of my musical life! But I'll try not to get angry about it :-)

I have Covenant and it's pretty good... I'm just saying that I don't understand why everyone think they're a SUPER good band. I would say that Death has more talent than them (IMO). Oh, and I don't play guitar... so, I know I couldn't even try to play one of the solos.

I prefer old Morbid Angel alot more, it had more energy and most tunes from thoose days where just great and groundbraking death metal songs. The last albums are ok but compared to the other death metal bands doing technical death they seem to be abit weak, especially gateways to annihation and Domination. I would definately spend my money on a Immolation album instead for Morvid Angel if I where to choose.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. Covenant, to me, was such a better cd than GTA. Altars of Madness was also better. GTA was still good though.

coypu i really hope ur bein sarcastic about the cradle of filth comment....otherwise i think i just lost all respect in you music wise lol.

regarding Gateways....i think its a good album. nothing amazing, just a good album. most people probably dont like it because they slowed wayyyy down and created a different groove. my personal favorites are Altars, Covenant, and Formulas. Domination, aside from treys solos...really sucks. ironically, my favorite albums were prodominately written by Trey. all of Formulas was, half of Altars, and all but 1 song musically on Covenant.

if you want groundbreaking amazement and innovation, go out and buy the album "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh"

make sure you listen to it on a discman and while on the can, cuz ur gonna **** urself when you listen to it.

coypu
08-20-2002, 03:42 AM
Formulas depend to much on the solos, just listen to the song Covenant of death, the only worthwhile part is the solo apart from that the song isn't too much fun at all. The only really good song is Invocation of the continual one and didn't he write that about 10+ years ago? I like Morbid Angel but I can name 20 bands that I like better who I think are alot better in so many ways, Morbid Angel have never had really good vocals and had always bad bassplay to name a few things. I respect the fact that it is your favorite? band but for people who aren't too sure what to think I just want to say that their thoughts are shared by many.

But all this is just opinion, there isn't much need in discussion this back and forth so with some luck people who haven't heard them MUST check them out and even if they love it or hate it atleast they have heard it.

GertrudeMcCrack
08-20-2002, 03:52 PM
Everyone respects MA because of the huge influence they had on DM, so it's perfectly understandable that listening to them after you've heard some more recent bands, you'd be kind of unimpressed. It's like listening to Pantera before you've ever heard Sabbath, if you know what i mean.

WHAT THE **** AM I HEARING!!!!!!

CoF...DEATH METAL!!!they are black metal by far, thats like saying Dimmu Borgir is Hard Core!!!!!!!thats blasphomus!!!!!!
and...yes morbid angel does get boring at times, but you all have to admit, they did come up with some very complex riffs, and some of the most memorable death metal riffs of all time

what makes MA boring is the fact they only concentrait on major and minor 3rds on almost every song, but the vocals i dont think bad. Back in the early 90's death metalwas basically experimental in florida (ie MA, Deicide) it was how evil can you get your vox (glen won that battle always), now-a-days Death Metal Vox are lower, the name of the game is who can get lower, and how fast can your feet move.

Now with newer Melodic Death Metal Bands, fronted by Arch Enemy it becomes harder to distingush BLack, from Death. But as i said before....CRADLE OF FILTH DEATH METAL, WHAT THE FLYING BE-JESUS **** IS WORNG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!!!!!!I HAVE NEVER SEEN A DEATH METAL BAND USE SYNTH CHOURS, PIPE ORGANS, BELLS (HIGH AND LOW PICTHED), VIOLINS, ECT ECT THOUGH OUT THERE SONGS...this fits more black metal

the cd still blows away everything. its ****ing incredible.

You mean "Mars" from The Planets Suite by Holst? Was that used for Super Mario 3? Anyway it was a nice idea for Nile to use it in a metalised fashion but it didn't really work - maybe if they'd got an orchestra to do it because synthesised brass sounds are awful.

I really got into Death metal after hearing 'she was asking for it' by cannibal corpse. It was the first real death song I heard and it hooked me but the after I heard Inpropagation by Carcass I was completely hooked with no chance of turning back at all.

Getting into the technical **** : Atheist - Life, Suffocation - any song.

Other songs that where important for different reasons:

Meshuggah - Humiliative
Carcass - Exhume to consume + almost any song from the 3 first albums.
Gorguts - Orphans of sickness, with their flesh he'll create
Immolation - No jesus no beast
Cynic - Veil of maya

And the most important song for my bassplaying is actually : Carcass - Empatholigical Necroticism, the first song I learned by myself and it turned me on to bassplaying for real.

metal: Machine head and *gasp* Slipknot!! how shameful, lol ;)

(melodic) Death metal: Children of bodom, heard the song "Bed of Razors" and fell in love. And this forum thread helped a bit too

In Flames: Jotun, The Jester Race (songs)

At The Gates: With fear I kiss the burning darkness (album)

Dark Tranquillity: The Gallery (album)

Arch Enemy: all their old stuff, which is still several times better than the new stuff

those are the major ones

LordWorm

Song that got me into metal-Fear Factory: Demanufacture

Morbid Angel: Dominate- still sounds brutal

Crytopsy: Phobophile

Suffocation: Pierced From Within

Immolation: Furthest From The Truth

Cannibal Corpse: ****ed With A Knife

Nile: Black seeds of vengeance

Entombed: Stranger Aeons-although anything past Clandestine is not death metal.

Carcass: Reek Of Putrefaction

Their are other bans but I cant think of them at the moment.

Well, for years i listened to Classic rock, and the occasional grunge band, then for no apparent reaosn, i decided to buy Sepultura's 'Chaos AD,' decided i liked it, and got:

Carcass: Heartwork
Obituary: World Demise
Machine Head: Burn My Eyes
Slayer: Divine Intervention
Pantera: Far Beyond Driven

In other words, anything heavy i could find in HMV. That's how it all started!

The Suffocation reunion is good for all things but the fact that Chris Richards didn't want to join them. He is by far the best bassplayer that Suffocation ever had and I seriously doubt that Josh Barohn can even come close to Chris. And Suffocation with out Doug Cerrito? As for Suffocation - if I remember rightly, most of the members in the line up played on Effigy and IMO that's still their finest hour. Maybe it'll be great, maybe it won't but it's a good sign of the state of DM if bands like Suffocation are re-forming.

I need some suggestions on Death Metal bands that sound like:

Carcass
Children Of Bodom
Arch Enemy
Kalmah

I'm not really into the "snare drum hit every .02 second/ heavy growl" death metal.

If you did as Lord Worm suggested and listened to those Entombed albums and like them; then you'd also like:

Oooh. I don't really know much about bass players but those that stand out for me are Steve DiGiorgio - especially on Autopsy "Severed Survival", check that clanky bass sound! And also the bass player for Acid Death (Greek Prog/Death). Apart from that I wouldn't have a clue!

I dont know much about bass either but one of my favourites is Eric Langlois from Cryptopsy, his bass playing makes the song more intesesting, especially on Slit your guts.

I don't mind the sound of death metal too much, but what really turns we off is the morbid subject matters and song titles, like "Slit Your Guts". It just doesn't seem that artistic to me, and I think lyrics are the most important part of a song.

well if the lyrics were about love and happiness, then it would be called 'love metal', which it isnt. and to be honest, a lot of death metal songs aren't actually about death, ie. 'Drugged Unholy' by The Crown, a lot of EXTOL songs, and 'Dawn Of The Angry by Morbid Angel. and how are lyrics the most important parts of a song? 'Cold Demons' by Vader is an excellent song, and it only has about 15 lines of lyrics(or less), and most Opeth instrumentals are masterpieces

Their drumming definately wasn't all that fast on Necrotisism and Heartwork by it definately was on reek and symphonies.

oh no i totally agree. i mean i know the music and lyrics are generally inseperable, but i just feel that bands could get the gloomy sad death feeling across to listeners without having to have songs like "slit your guts" that's all. and it's not as if it really bothers me that much. i was just making a comment in passing. i don't really listen to death metal coz from what i have heard, although the music can be quite emotive, I think the lyrics spoil the talented muscians work. are there any death metal bands who don't have lyrics. i'd be interested in hearing them.

lyrics are the most important part of a song because that is what the listener relates to the most. i don't think this can be disputed too much, and although i'm sure you can come up with some exceptions, for the most part i think it is true. after all, a "song" is "sung" by a "singer" and for the singer to sing something there have to be words. he/she can't sing a guitar solo.

ok i probably used the wrong word when i said artistic, but that wasn't my point anyway. what i was saying was that i don't like the lyrics too much (from what i have heard, but if you recommend something i'd be very willing to give it a try) and i feel they are the most crucial part of a musical composition for the most part. Again its what I personally realte to the most, as I'm sure most people do) when I hear a song.

no ive never heard the song, but only took it as an example because it was posted above and it illustrated my point perfectly... that i'm put off by the morbid nature of the lyrics. the beauty of the music can undoubtedly be heard, but i can't say i love death metal because i don't like the lyrics of the songs that i have heard. that's all i am saying. i didn't really think it was that much of a controversial comment.

that's true, and i haven't heard "slit your guts" so i guess that can be taken to be weakness in my argument if you look at it one way. However, I only used it as an example because it was handily placed just above my first reply to this thread. My point was that the songs I have heard are morbid in terms of their lyrics. It's just that I inferred that the lyrics of "Slit Your Guts" would be in line with the title and therefore equally morbid.

For your correction;
Shriek to your heart's
Content, if you wish;
I promise you pain and
Nightmares, in that sequence.

Permit me to introduce you to

I favor her, this pretty blade
So tall and fine;
Hatred and violence are not
Our ways, but firm we are;
Squirming is useless, so is this
Colon, cry for me.

Svelte is implement,
Its gentle caress lets you Bleed;
its subtle curvature
Dancing, deeply slit your guts.

What is your pleasure? This is

the lyrics are very ok as I imagined they would be, but as I keep saying it is the nature of the lyrics, the morbidness, that I don't like. "I promise you pain and nightmares" "What is your pleasure..This is mine". It's sick. The lyrics are ok, but the songwriting (and it is different to the lyrics) is very poor in my opinion. You can dislike the lyrics if you want but I find Lord Worms lyrics brilliant but that is my opinion. The songwriting on the other hand is superb when it comes to cryptopsy, I really think that you should listen to the music before making comments on the songwriting!!! You might even call Cynic untechnical just because of the "dangerous" name but that would be as far from the truth as you are with cryptopsy!

i probably couldn't but you're taking this way out of proportion. in the first instance i just said that I found the music to be good, but that I couldn't listen to the whole thing for very long because i think lyrics are the most important part of a composition and I don't find the lyrics of Death Metal bands very appealing. Therefore I haven't formed an opinion on death metal bands from things that I haven't heard and have just guessed about. I accept that I made an assertion about "Slit Your Guts" but the posting of the lyrics just backed my thoughts up. Again it's just another song that wouldn't appeal to me. Again just my opinion. I also have to add that I find it quite disturbing that you find pleasure from such songs. You say it is just like watching a horror movie (not really coz people watch horror movies to be scared not simply to see blood and guts) If that is what gets you excited when you watch a horror film then I would have tosay that you are psycho, and that they should lock u up sometime soon before some more school kids get murdered.

the threads that go up here are for people who are interested in music to read and comment on if they wish. if you post something on the internet you've gotta be prepared to take some crtitcism at times. But don't get defensive when I simply said initially (and again it was just a passing comment) that I liked the music but not the lyrics and therefore that I didn't like the overall composition.

You are making some really bad generalization like "the lyrics of Death Metal bands", you can't really judge all bands like that. There are bands who have lyrics that maybe appeal abit more to you that you haven't discovered yet. But speaking of standard death lyrics, you must realise that it would sound incredbly stupid if Suffocation sang songs about love and harmony while punding out some of the most brutal music ever, it just wouldn't work. And no I am not a psycho for enjoying a horror movie, you should not beleive in that nonsense that medie at times tries to tell you (like the marilyn manson **** for example).

Here are some death metal lyrics that aren't like thoose you have read sofar :

An Incarnation's Dream

[Lyrics: Schaefer]
[Music : Atheist]

It all seems so strange
The mutes the bums
The dogs with mange, the poor,
Doesn't anybody help themselves anymore
I guess not
Barefoot pregnant women
Little kids with snot on their face
A land of plenty, a dynasty of disgrace !
I'll manifest for you
Careening on the outer limits of reality
My mission to create a better galaxy
I must not fail them now,
I look inside to see that it's clear
Living life is just not enough
You must persevere
Please grab hold
Not to things that are bought
But to things that cannot be sold,
Then you'll see
You're released by trial and error
The world's prophecy is to learn
A candle lit from the bottom
Will soon start to burn
Don't dignify, a false spy in the sky
Re-route your path
With the blink of an eye

Walking around with a mind of your own
With a glance to the past
You can see we have grown
How much we have grown

It's been my dream
To enter the stream
To let carnates know
What life really means
If one understands
That's all I can ask
Life to you
is such a wretched task !

Sentiment

Cosmic mother awaken us in
Thine impartial love for all
Bless us that we be free from
The sway of greed and delusion
Inspire us to build a new world
One in which famine, disease and ignorance
Will be only memories of a dismal past

[CHORUS]
Creative mother arouse us to know
That we be not lost in the sands
Open our eyes

Creative mother arouse us to know
Inspire us to build a new world
Since forever we've yearned to
Quench what's never fulfilling
Lost endeavors found in a stilled
Mind if we be willing

...etc, as you see there are so many different lyric types and you should not be so close minded.

yeah i know being narrow-minded is a crime, but it's hard to avoid doing sometimes. i mean ive listened to quite a lot of death metal, i don't know what exactly, some of my mates are into it, and everything ive heard seemed really morbid. i understand that death metal bands can't sing about love, but they could sing about death without the graphic details by using imagery or whatever. i know there will be plently of songs in which this is done, such as those which u posted, and which i really appreciate. i'm gonna check em out when i get a chance cos they seemed pretty good. thanks a lot. and yeah i knew all along that there might be bands whose lyrics appealed to me, but the longer it went without me hearing one, the less likely i thought it would be that one/some existed. but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. but i have to say i'm still pretty worried about you if its only the blood and guts which gets you going when you're watching horror movies. only kiddin'.

dam_n straight. do you (chezzers) really think that all death metal bands take themselves seriously? come on, if Cannibal Corpse acted out all of their lyrics in real life, they would be:

a) locked up in an institution,
b) on death row
c) a bit idiotic, really :D
d) all three of the above

and, if i'm not mistaken, they don't.

Read the lyrics for Opeth. I think they're incredibly creative and very good.

The Leper Affinity

We entered Winter once again
Naked, freezing from my breath
Neath the lid all limbs tucked away
This coffin is your abode from now
and onwards
Your body is mine to avail
Such a tragic sight you are
Slave under my creed
Spurring me with those tears
I am beyond death
Midst a dreaming affinity
Saving strength now, faint whispers
Come erotic communion in its splendour
Fever mirrored ghosts
Night time consolation, cross the line
Draw murder into art
Sleep inside through days
In the wake of this relief
Shivering, longing for more
Insanity at it's peak
Love me to my death
Lost are days of Spring
You sighted and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin
Your gaze covered with virgin snow
Rigid features
It's the shallow deeds who is to blame
Deafening shrieks pierced the night
A step from oblivion
Moving into the dim lights
Hiding within a reverie
It was worth it for the wait alone

The Leper Affinity

We entered Winter once again
Naked, freezing from my breath
Neath the lid all limbs tucked away
This coffin is your abode from now
and onwards
Your body is mine to avail
Such a tragic sight you are
Slave under my creed
Spurring me with those tears
I am beyond death
Midst a dreaming affinity
Saving strength now, faint whispers
Come erotic communion in its splendour
Fever mirrored ghosts
Night time consolation, cross the line
Draw murder into art
Sleep inside through days
In the wake of this relief
Shivering, longing for more
Insanity at it's peak
Love me to my death
Lost are days of Spring
You sighted and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin
Your gaze covered with virgin snow
Rigid features
It's the shallow deeds who is to blame
Deafening shrieks pierced the night
A step from oblivion
Moving into the dim lights
Hiding within a reverie
It was worth it for the wait alone

i see that it's well-written but there's nothing special about it. i mean i wrote stuff like that in english poetry four or five years ago. the lyrics aren't clever and certainly don't make you think about stuff, like the lyrics of the likes of lennon/mccartney, curtis, waters, rose and the like.
