That is a good random fact. And actually, that's a vague of a meaning for Ragnorak. It's supposed to be the end of the world in which the ice and fire demons are at war. (or something similar)

The Red Chord (I think they are labeled as hardcore....but I have no idea why)

I like to think of their music as death metal written by people with the attention span of 4 year olds.

As for Borknagar, they've said on their message board that it's Bork nuh gar. You can hear it said that way on the making-of video clip for Epic, too. Nonetheless, I say Bor nuh gar simply because it's easier and I'm lazy.

If you like CC, you'll like Nile.

I growled along with Execration Text at my friend's house after finding the lyrics online. I can tell you that it's pretty hard, since the vocals get drowned out by the guitars at some points. I made it all the way through without coughing or choking, unlike my friend, who growls wrong.

Anyone heard of the Canadian band Martyr? They're pretty strange. Not very brutal or extreme, but they are amazing at their instruments, especially the bass and lead guitar. Good to see you're still listening to them :) Nothing really springs to mind for similar suggestions though, not least because they use keyboards, and I don't think I've heard any other death metal bands with keyboards (except one, called Psypheria I think, and I've not actually heard anything by them).

Maybe Spiral Architect, but they're not death metal, and I think you already know them, anyway. Maybe Canvas Solaris, but again they're not entirely death metal, and sans keyboards, and they're totally instrumental. Worth checking out anyway though.

I suppose this was really just a bump to try and get your question noticed.

There are 2 different metal genres you can do with 2 people: black metal and grindcore.

Since you are doing black metal, remember to take the worst possible looking "band" pictures. Also, make sure that in the credits of your album, both of you have hilarious pseudonyms and that both of you are credited with as many instruments as possible.

I.E.
Goatflame: Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Drum machine programming, Nose Flute, Violin, Gong, Recorder, Two Sticks, Synthesizer.

Grimnecro: Backup vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Digeridoo, Piano, Goat Blood Splattering on Wall Sounds, Bongos, Clarinet.

The keys to trOO n3cro kvlt black metal are:

1. Only 1 band member. You are allowed session musicians, but there is to be an absolute MAXIMUM of 1 official band member.

2. You are not allowed, under any circumstances whatsoever, to record in a studio. It must be done in one of the following locations: a condemned apartment, a dark Norwegian forest in the middle of the night. Preferable the latter.

3. You are also not allowed any technoligically advanced recording equipment. All recording must be done on a hand held tape recorder with 1 microphone input.

4. You must never, EVER, under any circumstances, play any live shows. Playing live shows is "untrOO" and doesn't represent the trOO darkness of your music.

5. You are allowed a maximum of 100 copies of your demo. And those MUST be handed out by you. There is to be no official distrobution, no record label affiliation, no selling of demos at your shows (see rule #4 concerning live shows). You are only allowed to hand out a maximum of 20-30 copies. Any more than this and you rmusic becomes too commercial and therefore untrOO.

6. You band logo must include at least 2 of the following: an inverted cross, a pentacle. The writing must be totally illegible. No one, not even you should be able to read your bands name.

7. The only people to really know your bands name must be you and your bandmates (see rule #1 concerning band members). However, all of your demo tapes (see rule #5 concerning demo tapes) must have your bands logo (see rule #6 concerning band logos) on them.

8. All of these rules are non-negotiable. The breaking of any of these rules automatically negates your n3cro kvlt status and reveals you as untrOO.

sorry...I'm at work and I'm really really bored.

So, i was watching the West Wing (American Law show) tonight and it was about dealing with this group of Aryan supremacists in New York and when they were talking about them, one of the executives in the white house brought up how they look up to the band Graveland.

Rob Darken finally makes American TV. Great stuff.

I was already a fan of the Amott brothers because of Arch Enemy (Well, Wages of Sin...Anthems never did it for me), but I was totally blown away when I picked up Heartwork by Carcass. It's so...****ing....cool!! I got it for like 10 bucks, too...gotta love used CD Stores.

Thanks man. I will check out Psypheria and Canvas Solaris, regardless of whether they sound anything like TiP. I trust your musical taste.

That is because Necroticism is not grind. It is strait up death metal. Symphonies of Sickness and Reek of Putrefaction were Carcass' grind days.

They are certainly more grindy. Different style all together. The first two albums were brutal, abrassive, death/grind, although not lacking for it's groovy moments. Some people say the production is sub-par, on Reek of Putrefaction in particular, but I've never thought so. Overall, Necroticism is my favorite Carcass album, followed by Symphonies of Sickness.

Sick of people saying Pantera ripped Exhorder off. So what if they 'borrowed' their style a bit, it happened loads during the 80's Thrash regime....nobody credits Metallica with that, they just insult them. Phil Anselmo has a better vocal range than Kyle Thomas, Dimebag outruled both of the Exhorder guitarists, so what the **** is the problem? they didn't rip them off. They might have added a few elements for Cowboys From Hell, but as they went on a style of their own came about. I'm not saying this cause Dimebag got shot, I was saying this longgg before this. Check my post on the last page.

I saw your post, that's why I wrote, aswell as Mr "Everyone agrees with" Jondur. People seem to think it's amazing that Pantera had their Glam days back in the 80's. I don't really care....Listen to Heresy, Cowboys From Hell and The Art Of Shredding from Cowboys From Hell, they're bordering on Thrash. The 80's were a different scene to the 90's which some people can't seem to grasp. Phil IS a good singer, Dimebag wrote wicked riffs, Rex was a competent bassist and Vinnie was a excellent drummer. Dimebag was gonna be the next Megadeth Guitarist back in 1990, so he obviously had talent.

Yes I like Exhorder aswell, I own both their albums, but aside from the vocals I can see nothing that compares the two bands together. They ripped Exhorder off? so why aren't they 'Groove Metal?"

Does anyone know where the intro to Akercocke - Praise The Name Of Satan is from? It sounds like an old occult movie or something. And I can usually get answers here faster than google.

And finally...

i've been meaning to check out death metal for a while... any song recommendations from any bands?

Behemoth - Antichristian Phenomenon
Behemoth - Decade Of Therion
Behemoth - Christians To The Lions
Behemoth - Blackest Of The Black
Behemoth - Heru Ra Ha: Let There Be Might
(gee...can you tell I'm on a Behemoth kick!)?
Aborted - Meticulous Invagination
Akercocke - Praise The Name Of Satan
Akercocke - Of Menstrual Blood And Semen
Vehemence - By Your Bedside
At The Gates - Kingdom Gone
At The Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease
At The Gates - Blinded By Fear
Blood Red Throne - Malignant Nothingness
Bloodbath - Buried By The Dead
Cryptopsy - Phobophile
Deicide - Dead By Dawn
Iniquity - Tides Of Vengeance
Iniquity - The Bullets Breath (the song from growl karaoke)
Kataklysm - Point Of Evanescence
Vital Remains - Dechristianize
Necrophagist - Mutilate The Stillborn
Necrophagist - Stabwound
Sinners Bleed - The Ludo Game
Sinners Bleed - Daemons
Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance
Nile - Unas Slayer Of Gods
Lykathea Aflame - Land Where Sympathy Is Air
Lykathea Aflame - To Become Shelter And Salvation
Lucifer - Watching The Christians Burn
Lucifer - Begotten Christian Bastards
Immolation - I Feel Nothing

That's actually half of my current playlist. The rest consists of black metal. That should keep you busy for a while. Browse the thread for tons of other stuff worthy of looking into.

It's quite simple. Pantera were hairspraying it up then all of a sudden Exhorder burst onto the scene (and make no mistake these guys were a sensation - no-one else was playing anything like this) and then all of a sudden Pantera chunkified their sound, Anselmo started sounding "hard" rather than "castrated". they then went further (and gayer) and made their own take on it. But I'm afraid to say - the rip-off was blatent! More so than all the Norwegian Death Metal Bands who heard "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" and started wearing corpsepaint.

I also want to take that noob home - how cute is that. Look at his chubby little cheeks and his LostProphets albums. Awwwwwww!

Haha, I'd hardly say Phil sounded 'hard' on Cowboys from Hell. I'd say he tried ripping Halford off more than anyone. Lyrical wise I can understand your point on that, the lyrics did change drastically, going from "We love chicks on our dicks" type thing to talking about Heresy and all the rest. I was rather drunk when I wrote that reply by the way, so don't think of me as an arrogant prick, I was just stating my point on the matter.

There will always be copys, the scene can't live without them.

They do ship to Australia, but Australia is in Zone 2 for shipping, which means you actually have to pay for shipping costs.

The sale also isn't as good this time, he's got even more restrictions. It only applies to CDs which cost £9.99 (be careful, as some are priced at £9.98, presumably to rule them out), and whose product codes don't begin with mosh, cm, som, oscd, wick, naula, spi or npr, which has so far ruled out quite a few that I would have liked.

Still, if you can find multiple CDs you want that it does apply to, it's a decent sale.

As Much as i like pantera i have agree and note the similarity of the chorus for
"Primal Concrete Sledge" to Metallica's "Phantom Lord". And there are more, i think an Iron Maiden riff appears in Domination. I haven't heard any Exhorder so i cant say there is any similarity

To anyone who saw Satyricon on their recent tour (the only person I can remember here is Ihsahn) it could be their last. This was posted yesterday on Blabbermouth.net:

SATYRICON guitarists Steinar Gundersen and A.O. Gronbech were arrested and charged in Canada for drugging and raping a woman in the band's tour bus after a concert in Toronto.

"I can confirm that the Norwegian consul in Toronto has been in contact with the arrestees, and followed up by, among other things, visiting them in jail and obtaining legal assistance," said Anne Lene Dale Sandstein, press officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to Norwegian TV 2 Nettavisen.

According to Canadian police, the crimes were committed after SATYRICON had performed at the club Fun Haus in Toronto last Tuesday (Dec. 14), reported the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.

"A woman from Toronto explained that she went with the two Norwegian musicians to their tour bus," said Kristin Bacharach at the Toronto police to the paper. There she was reportedly drugged and sexually assaulted.

Bacharach confirmed that the two musicians have been arrested and are charged. DNA tests have been taken. If found guilty, the two musicians may be sentenced to ten years in prison.

As a result of the musicians' arrests, the remaining dates on SATYRICON's North American tour with 3 INCHES OF BLOOD (including a New York show) were cancelled.

About Satyricon, I don't really think it affects them much tourwise (though they may never be able to tour here again) since Steinar and Arnt were just session musicians. Satyr could easily find others. However, it does affect Keep of Kalessin and Spiral Architect quite adversely, as Steinar is Spiral Architect's lead guitarist, and Arnt plays for Keep of Kalessin. SA were supposed to be releasing some new material within the next year or two, but now that seems highly unlikely without Steinar... and I don't really know enough about Keep of Kalessin to comment. At least Lars Norberg wasn't involved in this, then Spiral Architect would really be screwed.

You are responding to posts that were made almost years ago or posts that are quite old. Did you realize this thread is almost 500 pages long?

Which album? If it was Consuming Impulse, that really is a pity.

Nah, I made sure it wasn't. :p I would never have left that store without that album if Consuming Impulse was there. Even if it was, it would still be there when I go to that store again. That's the good thing about how popular non-mainstream music is in Idaho...

Death metal rules. here's a few I like:

Cradle of Filth
In Flames (they WERE death metal back in the day)
Necrophobic
At the Gates
Runemagick
Children of Bodom
Immortal Souls
The Duskfall
Arch Enemy(amazing band, and the lead singer is HOT!!! what more could you ask for???)

Cradle Of Filth - not even close to death metal , they are gothic metal.
In Flames - melodic death, and they have never been close to death metal at all. As I mean straight up brutal/death metal. IE : Death, Cryptopsy and such...
Necrophobic - death metal
At The Gates - melodic death metal
Runemagick - death metal
Children Of Bodom - not even close to death metal or melodic death, power metal with harsh vocals is what they are.
Immortal Souls - melodic death
The Duskfall - melodic death
Arch Enemy - melodic death, I hope you also know they had a male singer as well for 3 ablums before her.

You have been educated.

What do you guys think of Moonsorrow?

I heard two songs, Kivenkantanja and Pakanajuhla, they are great! I like the folk elements they add to their songs, it's quite interesting.

They make me want to do an evil pirate mosh dance...

Moonsorrow is a great band...

I need to find more of their stuff then just the Voimasta Ja Kunniasta album.

Folk and viking metal = \m/

I absolutely adore Moonsorrow, almost everything they've done. Thier new album is quite good, and still very long and epic.

On another note, I was listening to some Psypheria that I got from Ninjamonkey and was pleasantly surprised to find that the intro to the second track was the main motif from Bach's "Little Fugue" in G minor... I'm really getting into this Psypheria so far, though the keys seem a bit out of place sometimes.

Has anybody ever heard of Demilich? I ran into them surfing the internet the other day and I think they're pretty good.

They have all their stuff up for download at http://demilich.doesntexist.com/.

Definitly worth checking out... especially since it's free!
