god, this thread is spreading like a fire! i hope you're all doing well :). I havent listened to any music the previous week but I read the da vinci code (to be honest there are still 50 pages left). It's incredible and it has certainly change the way I see things. Has any of you checked it out? It has also references to various things a metaller is familiar with such as the pentagram and other symbols, Malleus Maleficarum (pestilence) and even the god Baphomet :)

I completely forgot about new Cryptopsy.
November 12th 2004 : U.S. Tour 2005
The Canadian Tour ended last week-end in Trois-Rivieres after 30 shows throughout the country. New dates were added in the United States and Cryptopsy will be playing in 2 festivals after this tour, the band will be in the U.S. from February to May 2005. Check out the Tour section for all the details. In the meantime, Cryptopsy is focussing on the new album and the production of 2 DVDs; October 9th's concert in Montreal and Flo Mounier's Instructional Drum Video, they will be available next year.

Well, therein lies the problem. That's a good album, but not the best, and definitely not the most accessible, though none of are really that...accessible. The obvious step/cure would be for you to buy or download the album "Close to a World Below" and listen to it on and endless rotation for approximately 3.8 weeks. Then do the same for "Unholy Cult"... You'll be a changed person.

Alright, heres the genre thing again. Power metal influenced by death (like most of the "gothenburg" bands like In Flames, etc.) is called "melo-death." Death metal influenced by power (like Intestine Baalism and Arghoslent) is called melodic death metal. It just depends what the most dominant aspects of the music are. Whether they are more on the death side or more on the melody side.

Apparently the newest album has already been recorded in September or October. Lykathea Aflame did play live once at Obscene Extreme in the Czech Republic. I believe it was in 2002.
And melodic death metal isn't the same thing as death metal influenced by power metal. Heartwork by Carcass is melodic death metal, and it wasn't influenced by power metal.

Well, it's not like he hasn't played live before. I'm sure if he couldn't do it, he wouldnt play live. heh
And melodic death metal isn't the same thing as death metal influenced by power metal. Heartwork by Carcass is melodic death metal, and it wasn't influenced by power metal.
No, not all. And I more meant "melody" than "power."

Theres quite a bit of Iron Maiden influence in heartwork. Just listen to This Mortal Coil as a prime example.
Someone I know even just called Heartwork melo-death rather than melodic death, but I think that's a bit extreme.

couple more notes on arch enemy.
1. christopher is acutally the better soloist of the two. stop worshiping michael for carcass.
2. i saw the dead eyes see no future video and i was pissed off. the reason is that angela was really the only one the camera was getting chris or mike does a solo and the camera is on angela doing a poor excuse for headbanging. i realizer arch enemy became much more popular when angela joined for wages of sin but i think band could easily have reached the same prominence with johan liiva. all they did was start showing videos... opinions?

I don't mind the drums ound either. It sounds pretty standard of metal drum-soudns to me. Their myspace says "Dave" is on the drums. So, I'm taking it that those are real. Metal-archives says the drums are programmed by the guitarist, but maybe that was before these were recorded or something (despite the fact that the sogns are ont eh album). I don't know why they would list a drummer on their site if they used a drum machine. Even if he was only their live drummer, I don't feel like they would list him.
I'm gunna start checking out the Derek Roddy forum some time or other.

I've run out of technical death metal groups! Please suggest some non brutal ones that I havent heard of!
Sleep Terror: Now this is an answer to all those who are looking for "death metal without screaming"!
Lord Dragon: Where exactly are the Revenant you're referring to from?
Disillusion: I found their album but didnt like what I heard from the samples, should I go further?
Plus guess what's on its way home! An Atheist Piece of Time LP and a Sadus Swallowed in Black CD. Yay
I hope you still remember me...

EDIT:
Is the "Member Since" the member time of the myspace site?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "Member Since" is the member time for Myspace. If the drums are real, then holy shi.t. :amaze:

As for the Revenant that he was referring to, im pretty sure he means the one from new jersey, good stuff there.
As for disillusion, that band is amazing, but you have to absorb the album from beginning to end to appreciate it, and it will probably take a few listens.

Sure I've heard of both of them :). Capharnaum's vocals annoy me a bit, they have this -core tοne but musically are pretty good

Yeah, that would be the NJ Revenant with amazing lyrics and who released Prophecies of a Dying World. Death/thrash, excellent stuff.
I'm not sure about the other two but you would love Arsis, great musicmanship, good riffs and they don't have gutteral growls.

I got that Revenant album, but I also got Kataklysm's Serenity in Fire, which takes listening precedence, so I'll have to come back to it.

Purely instrumental, but you could check out a band I've only just started listening to recently - Canvas Solaris. Like I say, no vocals, and they're not 100% death metal either, but the phrase "holy Cynic worship, Batman" springs to mind.

And yeah, I guess the Burning Inside vocalist does sound quite a bit like Di Salvo, but Di Salvo's voice isn't nearly as powerful, it sounds more forced. (to be powerful) Both vocalists are good though. :p

I listened to OverCast of my Inner Self and now listening to Humanity Forsaken. The production is killer, and so are the songs. What I liked about Overcast... was the lack of blast beats. However, I did NOT like the vocalist. Still, it was a good listen. Humanity Forsaken seems good so far.

Indeed but only on mp3 and I'm a big fan of the real thing especially when it comes from underground groups. Underground groups usually mean poor distro but this is the real challenge!
I've never heard of BEHEADED! I will certainly give them a try :)
Bartender: I havent heard of CANVAS SOLARIS either. Since I discovered MCM(unbelievable prog/fusion) I became more interested in instrumental acts.
Mekkalayakay: Surprisingly I heard BURNING INSIDE on the radio the other day but apart from reading a discouraging but not accurate I guess review on metal-archives I didnt bother to go further but now I will.
Dark Hero: As for PESSIMIST, I've only heard of them (not listened to anything by them) but for some reason I get the impression they are too brutal. Let me see...
These should keep me busy for a while. Thank you all!

Only once. They dont play death metal, they play prog/fusion metal but certainly the worth checking. I was lucky enough to listen to a few songs off their album on the radio but unfortunately I cant find any mp3s.

You might have heard people talking about rep(utation) points around here. There's something about in the Announcements at the top of the forum, but in brief;
Under every user's avatar, there should be, amongst other things, a box with a tick and a X in it. That's the rep button. The idea if, if someone posts something really cool, intelligent, funny, etc (or conversely stupid, hostile, racist, etc), you click that button, choose whether you approve the post (giving them positive rep) or disapprove (giving them negative). You can leave a comment for them to read too, if you like. You start off with 10 points, and the amount of points you can give or remove from other users is based on how many points you yourself have.
The stars come in when you get a certain number of points. 1000 points or more, you get four stars. I'm not sure how much it takes to get five, but mods start off with 20,000 anyway. You can check any comments people have left by going to your user CP, although there's not guarantee you'll have any, or that any you do have will have comments.
I think that's it.

Click the check box under your own username. It's the same box that you rep other people with.
edit: None of my radio stations play intense metal. :( Ever.
double edit: And Sensitive Organ, yes the songs are awesome. I don't like the vocalist as much on those demos off the new album as much as I like the 30 second clips from the previous two albums.

I have no idea if you can have one star. One person that I know of has only three stars, and mods have five, but other than that, they've all been fours.
You can check your points without changing your usertitle..click Quick Links at the top of the page, then User Control Panel. When that page loads, scroll down to the bottom, and it tells you there.

And by the way, have any of you guys ever tried listening to Warhorse? That is the slowest damn stuff I've ever heard, and I can't stand it. It's like stoner death. I guess that's an appropriate term. It isn't bad, but once you get three minutes into a song, you're done. It just drags way too much. I just can't take it. :(
