If you think you can cope with something REALLY heavy I suggest a quick listen (about 20 mins per song!) to Esoteric. We supported them and Indesinence at the Underworld on Sunday and although it's not really my sort of thing ... WOW! Live they made my head hurt and my legs wobble.
Haha, there's a band called The Esoteric on Prosthetic Records. Ruh roh.

The thing with doom is that it encompasses a lot of different things. Some of it is pretty friggin extreme, some of it is not even close. I can only stomach certain doom bands though, most of the time its just too physically draining to listen to.

Really I wouldn't call them Doom Metal anyway. They're more a psychedelic sludge/noisecore band. I certainly don't hear the Sabbath in there. Same with other so-called doom metal bands like Skepticism, Thergothon etc. They're probably as extreme as the nastiest grindcore.

Not many people take them seriously. However, if you were into Death Metal at all, you should know that most of the band's focus lies in the music, not in the lyrics. I guess a lot of bands feel that extreme music needs extreme lyrics. It's a clichè and a trend within the extreme metal genre, but like so many others, I listen to it for the music, not the lyrics.

Perhaps so. But then, not a lot of people on this board are CC fans, mainly because they are (in my opinion at least, and others too) uninspiring, derivative and dull. Besides, given your name, you could take a typical Libertines lyric, for example:
"Don’t look back into the sun
Now you know that your time has come
And they said it would never come for you"
and it would mean just as little as a Cannibal Corpse lyric. Both mean absolutely nothing. Lyrically there are far better bands around, musically as well. Also, of course, the focus in extreme metal has always primarily been on instrumental skill rather than lyrics.

Evoken is great slow death/doom and is one of my favourite bands. Quietus is an absolutely incredible album. Skepticism's Stormcrowfleet was a lovely epic funeral doom album and possibly the best by them. Esoteric is slow as **** but is also extremely heavy and I have a feeling you'd like them. You may want to check out Winter as well with their "Into Darkness & Eternal Frost" album. More excellent slow death/doom.

Death, was pretty early death metal band, I do believe.
i may be wrong but i believe 'death' was the/one of the first deathmetal bands, hence the genre title. there's a book call 'sound of the beast', i'm not sure of the author so that's probably not a great help, but it's a biography of metal, pretty much from sabbath on. unfortunately there's only a small chapter on scandanavian metal, but other than that, it's a good read. :thumb:
deathmetal would have to be my favourite genre, although i'm kinda new. (that's right, i'm a freshy........please don't hurt me(hides)) bands including:

Unlikely. Even Unsilence (who were near enough based in Manchester) only played about four gigs there in seven years. The scene is dire and its only recently that the big bands have started playing there let alone underground bands.

I know I'm being way too subjective but I cant help thinking that Death are closer than everything else I've heard so far to what I call ideal metal group; and this is mainly because of the way they progressed through the years.
By the way, do you know any other group that has such intelligent lyrical content?

Yea, I'm not of the 'Whoa, Mastodon's great!' persuasion I see around either.
I've been going on a sludge downloading binge since I found out about Isis...
I've got some Neurosis and Old Man Gloom cookin' - any other bands especially important?

Yeah, the cutoff rate at local universities is like 93% (IE you must have an average of over 93% in the prerequisite courses to get in) so that's why I'll probably be going to College. I will apply to some Unis but I'm not likely to be accepted, my average across the courses will be somewhere in the mid-high 80s :(

I'm really sorry if this question has been asked before, but if it was...I couldn't find it. I know there is a death metal band out there that doesn't growl all the time. I know it's in the genre and thats just how they sing, but it's not always to my liking. If I could find a band with lyrics that I can understand, but still have that death metal sound, I would be a big fan. So does anybody know a band like that??

Edge of sanity has a few scattered lines of clean vocals throughout their songs, and quite a decent amount on Crimson 1 and 2, they arent brutal death metal, but they sound like they *may* fit your description

Death, the vocals evolve from an album to another and it's easy to figure out the lyrics. Songs: Lack of Comprehension, Scavenger of Human Sorrow
Similar music with clean vocals Control Denied
Atheist, not exactly growling, the vocals are kind of high pitched in a distorted thrash way I think. Songs: Piece of Time, What the Psycic Saw. If you want similar music with clean vocals see Spiral Architect
Nocturnus, I dont think the vocals annoy in any way. Songs: Lake of fire, Undead journey
Pestilence, pretty accessible vocals as well. Songs: Cycle of Existence (older and overlooked era), Shperes
I've only mentioned older groups. These should get you started I think.

Aww man, more and more metal heroes die every day. It makes me feel like getting out there and really making a difference... but being at the wrong end of domestic abuse, lack of funds and resources, and lack of a good metal scene here keep pushing me down...
I can't wait to move somewhere else and start this crap life over again!
I just want to know what you guys think of some A7x, Avenged Sevenfold. God these guys are good but they aren't exactly Death Metal, more like Metal with a hint of Punk. Two suggestions of song if you haven't heard them would be Chapter Four, and Unholy Confessions. One more to that would be both of the I Won't See You Tonight's, because they are all **** good.

For some reason, metal in Leeds seems to be extremely expensive. Any other kind of music can be bought fairly cheaply, but I've found hardly any well-priced metal (though internet connection means Supernal is an option again). So I've bought no real metal since I was last on, except Dio \m/

lol no offence man but you should do some research before you call some of those bands death metal... Dimmu Borgir isn't death metal... Slayer are a huge influence but I wouldn't exactly call them death metal, if not thrash i would go for black metal, they were part of that movement with Celtic Frost and Venom and the rest.
Opeth are melodic death metal if you had to pinpoint a genre on them... and Emperor is without doubt black metal (not at all pure though.. nothing wrong with that, but their last couple have been booooring).
for some good death metal check of Vehemence and Vital Remains, both make good use of melody while still staying what's arguably true death metal. I could list hundreds of cds here.... lol ill keep it simple though

Tonight I'm going to see Hatebreed, Ankla, Golpe Justo, Matriarch, Six Feet Under, and As I Lay Dying. The only ones worth seeing are Six Feet Under (because of Chris Barnes), Golpe Justo (local oldskool hardcore band that gets really drunk and violent at the shows; the singer has been to jail a few times, I've seen him throw a mic stand and hit a guy in the audience in the face, the dude had to be rushed to the ER), and Matriach (local gothic metal group made up of young hot chicks)

What album do you reckon is better?
I prefer Scepter of the Ancients
Anyone heard of fragments of unbecoming? Bad *** death metal band with nice clean guitars and sick *** growling vocals.
Yeah, Old In Flames Jr. but I still like them.
On a somewhat related note to what was being talked about earlier, I just found out I've got the opportunity to see Psycroptic live, supporting Dismember (along with Anata and a band I've not heard of called Sanatorium. Are they any good?). So that looks good.
Good lord, that looks like the greatest show ever.
Any of you guys heard Oathean?
Stoic

yeah I've heard of them, but just heard of them. It's the only group I know from Korea :). Never bothered to listen to them though...But now that you mentioned them, I should give them a try...Any song suggestions?
Irrelevant: In progarchives.com Tool are labelled as progressive metal (!!!). Tell me the truth guys what makes them metal and what makes them prog? (Let's put on some weird times singatures repeat the same cool riff over and over, throw a bunch of "sophisticated" lyrics and we're prog!). Yes, yes I'm acting like a newbie but they put them under the same category with Watchtower for god's sake! Argg...

I have a question for you experienced extreme metal fans:
I need to get some new CDs, and was wondering if you could reccomend any CDs like Death - The Sound of Perserverence or The Red Chord - Fused Together in Revolving Doors (not sure if they're death, but the album reminds me of the Death one I mentioned, minus the great solos).
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies...

I finally got Psycroptic's Scepter of the Ancients yesterday, and I love it. The vocals are cool, how he trades off from the deep DM growls the the high-pitched singing is great. I also got some Sadus stuff, pretty cool. Anyone heard any Suffocation? What is their best?
