Yes its a great song. That whole album is amazing.
Here's some Morbid Angel news that I got off www.blabbermouth.net :
MORBID ANGEL: New Frontman Needed! - June 3, 2002
The MORBID ANGEL duo of Trey Azagthoth (guitar) and Pete Sandoval (drums) have ended their collaboration with touring bassist/vocalist Jared Anderson and are currently holed up at a Louisiana jam pad writing material for the group's next studio effort, due in 2003. Anderson, who had filled the role of the band's frontman during the act's most recent touring activities, has apparently opted to focus all his attention on HATE ETERNAL and INTERNECINE and will not be contributing his services to MORBID ANGEL's upcoming CD, which is tentatively scheduled to be recorded later in the year. An official announcement regarding the identity of the group's new bassist/vocalist and the details of the forthcoming album is expected in the coming months.

You wont find many death metal bands like slayer.
People say slayer are death metal, but to me they are thrash, the premiere thrash metal band of all time.
death metal has the growly vocals and more tremelo picking style of guitar playing, although slayer and death metal bands are both extremly fast, slayer wouldnt be classed under death metal, therefore there arnt any death metal bands that sound like them, maybe some thrash bands though.
If you want some death metal bands that arnt as brutal to your ears (cryptopsy, suffocation, nile) check out carcass and deicide.
Dont really know what doom metal is, maybe metal kinda like black but instead of the midievel sound, more of a "doomy" sound.

actually I think Slayer could be classified as death.. Most Death Metal bands name them as their biggest influence.. I mean think about it, they were one of the first bands with tha main theme of death through their music.. and also try listenin to Hell waits and show no mercy.. most of tha riffs on there are Tremolo pickin riffs. Hll awaits and reign in bloods topics through out tha album can match any death metal band for gore content.. definaltey slayer influeced death metal more than any other one band... what other album in 1986 had that fast playin and as deathy lyrical content. Granted Slayer dont growl.. but they Tom can scream dam well as he has had training as an opera singer.
Also people old Sepultura was thrash but I think not.. Check out Morbid Visions, Scizophrenia, Beneath the remains or Arise. Max has Growly vocals so I guess they must be classified as Death metal :D

Whats got people asking about doom metal lately? There's been 3 or 4 threads asking what is doom metal? Oh well. It's slower tempo, usually pretty dark and uses things like violins, synths, keyboards etc. Bands:
Candlemass
St. Vitus
Paradise Lost
Samael
Amorphis
Look at the doom metal (http://www.musicianforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28064) thread.

since my aol at home doesnt pull up websites, i will be posting less stuff as i am restricted to doing so in CAD class at school.
Fufanu Boy:
get all of Morbid Angel's. theyll be cheap enough. their best however is "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh" with a 3 way tie of "Covenant" "Altars Of Madness" and "Gateways To Annihilation" at 2nd. i dont particularly like "blessed are the sick". the sound production is quite....erm...bad lol. everything is separate. the cd doesnt sound like "one". also pick up Niles album "Black Seeds Of Vengeance". thats definately better than Amongst The Catacombs... another few albums to pick up are Kataklysm's "Sorcery" and "Temple Of Knowledge" very very awesome stuff.
morbid angel's retardedly fast stuff?
well....
"Immortal Rites"
"Bil Ur Sag"
"To The Victor The Spoils"
"Rapture"
"Heaving Earth"
"Covenant Of Death"
that should do it.
hmmm...yet again the fate of morbid angel hangs in the balance. they are back to where they were when Dave Vincent left. Nile picked up a pretty good guy after Chief left, and im hoping theyll find someone like Steve Tucker again. he ruled.
slayer, death metal? hell no. slayer are the definitive thrash metal band. they dont have the growling vocals, so that pretty much takes away any death metal. sure, they sing about death, but so doesnt korn and limp bizkit and a bunch of those numetal depressive whiny looser bands? are they death metal now? slayer are awesome, but not death metal.
some bands like them:
Primal Fear
Nevermore
Hypocrisy
Entombed (more growly but still awesome)
well...slayer really are the only band left of their style. there isnt too much out there like them.

Nice to see this thread hasn't slipped while I've been in the wilderness (literally - I've been camping in the mountains). I'm unsurprised to see the Slayer/death metal question has reared it's ugly head again. Influencing a genre doesn't mean a band is part of that genre - however if you like Slayer you obviously have good taste! You should also check out The Haunted, Destruction, Celtic Frost and Vader.
Anyone got any good gigs coming up? I've got a few at the end of the month - Throne of Nails, Candlemass in London and only two months til Wacken!!!! Hey Getrude! You're a southerner - are you going to Candlemass or are you not a doom fan?

Angel Of Disease....the happiest song in death metal!
indeed it is truly out there. it was written entirely (aside from solos) by Dave Vincent w/ Trey taking lyrical duty.
i have to say, Morbid Angel are the best band in existence. i cant find ANY flaws or ANYTHING that i would improve, EVEN FOR MY OWN PERSONAL TASTE.
on a side note, im currently reading "Awaken The Giant Within" by Tony Robbins. wow. this is easily the most monumental thing i have ever read. if any of you have some aspirations of something to do in life, i DEMAND that you go buy this book. it is so empowering.
and to a musical end, Trey Azagthoth is obsessed with this book so with a little luck, maybe YOU could play like him!!
Jondur
06-18-2002, 03:14 AM
What??! Read the book and you can play like Trey???!! Does anyone know what Pete Sandoval is reading?!! :-) No seriously I will always disagree with you on the solos but MA are fairly much untouchable! World of **** always struck me as a bit of a standout track as well in terms of melody etc. And that one off Domination where Dave starts singing (well almost). Can't remember the title goes- "I still see... what the others see not."
Azagthoth: Do you remember I told you about a band called Mithras? Well if you go to www.goldenlake.prods.co.uk you can hear two of their songs in the "Downloads" section. They sound like the wackier MA bits. Very classy.

anyhoo, about the book. lol you might be able to. the little ive read has opened my mind a lot more than i thought it could be....and im ****ting out awesome riffs like i just at a McDonalds Super Size Big Mac meal....lol
Jondur
06-19-2002, 03:41 AM
Sorry Azagthoth but I don't like guitar solos full stop generally - It seems most players do not treat them as an extension of the song but instead use them to show off regardless of the riff played beneath. I prefer a guitar solo to be melodic and to actually fit the backing parts. Obviously I can appreciate the amount of talent and technique needed to play Trey's solos and some of them are great (Formulas has probably the best examples). He is in good company however I also don't like solos by King/Hanneman and The Hoffman brothers (Deicide) and I have never denied the magic of Trey's riffs !
On the subject of Pete Sandoval - he really is very good you know! He is (rightly) legendary as the man who introduced the blastbeat to death metal. As he has influenced practically everyone in death metal his status is assured. While there are drummers who probably have surpassed him in speed and technical ability (Flo Mournier, Tony Laureno, Derek Roddy etc) his creativity cannot be denied.
GertrudeMcCrack
06-19-2002, 06:09 AM
Ooh, this is a cool topic: which guitar solos are the best at fitting into the songs, regardless of how difficult they are etc. I'd have to go with lot's of Bill Steer's stuff, especially Heartwork!
<--- What a surprise!
Jondur
06-19-2002, 08:27 AM
Yeah I'd go with Bill Steer for all of his work with Carcass - I like Mike Amott as well, his playing is very bluesy.
Leif Edling from Candlemass is another I admire.
Chuck Schuldiners later solos are very good harmonically against the backing parts.
I quite like some of Peter from Vaders solos. I have to say IMO that Death metal is one of the worst genres for guitar solos because of the proliferation of King/Hanneman style atonality.

i happen to deteste slayers solos. i cant stand them. the tone is horrid...the notes are just...blahhh. so bad.
i think Morbid Angel wouldnt be as magical without Treys leads. they just take the meaning of the song and just thrust it up to new heights. the feelin and the phrasing and the speed and the sound...ahhhhh theyre sooooooooo incredible. i dont see how u dont think they fit the riff underneath....they seem to match perfectly fine to me.
on the topic of pete sandoval....well......he does the drums for Morbid Angel. if youve ever listened to them....thats all that needs to be known.
and yes he is a human.

The bands that match the drummers are:
Tony Laureno: Angelcorpse, now Nile
Derek Roddy: every man and his dog!!! He played on Black Seeds of Vengeance (Nile) In Cold Blood (Malevolent Creation) and loads of others.
Dave Culross from Suffocation is another great.

Thanks for the drummers Jondur. I've been meaning to get cds from those bands for a while now.
Speaking of great solo's, I just bought Arch Enemy's Wages of Sin the other day and that cd is simply amazing. The guitar work is very cool, both riffs and solos. Angela is a great singer and the drumming is very cool too. The best cd I've heard in a while.

Mike DiSalvo was an awful choice for Cryptopsy. Almost anyone could've been better. The music was still great, but DiSalvo.. he just... he sounds constipated or something. Lacroix kills him. Their next album is probably gonna be heavier than the last 2.

Hey Corporal - why do you say Sandoval is lazy? Is this cos he doesn't hit as hard as some? I must say that his technique is a lot better than most because he stays relaxed. I'm not really bothered because he's not one of my favourite drummers but as is the case with Dave Lombardo, his influence on many of todays drummers cannot be denied.
Slayerrules: You're **** right about Arch Enemy's drummer being good. He's Adrian Eralndsson's brother and great drumming obviously runs in the family! Check out his stuff with Eucharist - excellent band!
Right I'm off to the drum forum cos I'm talking too much about drummers!
Before I go I have to say I quite like DiSalvo's vocals - while they may have sounded quite hardcore - ish they were very rhythmmic and I thought they fitted quite well with the music. However it was always going to be a controversial choice after Lord Worm. Perhaps a return to more traditional death metal vocals will be more appreciated by fans.

On Coypu's downloading page (the galaxen.net one), does anyone (preferably Coypu) know who the song "Reflections" is by? Or, if thats the name of the band, what the songs called?
The only songs I can think of are by Gordian Knot and Tool, and the file is too big for both of them, I think.

That's exactly why he's lazy. Take away his precious triggers and he'd almost suck cause you'd hardly be able to hear him. I think there's drummers out there that are better than him when he uses his triggers anyways. Flo for one has faster arms, and as time goes on, he's just getting better and better. I think that they are a sensors reacting on when the bassdrum is hit triggering a pre-programmed drum sample making the drum sound perfectly played and this also mkes it possible to hit the drum very softly and still get a full sound. some "cheaters" use this by putting the pedals very close to the drum and hitting it very soft so they can go very fast. Pete Sandoval does this among many
GertrudeMcCrack
06-23-2002, 10:28 AM
I wouldn't really call it cheating, if it makes the sound better, you might as well do it!
slayerrules
06-23-2002, 11:06 AM
Yea its just a censor that picks up vibration on the drums which they are placed instead of sound. The signal of the vibration is sent to a console which turns it into a preprogrammed sound.

umm .... usually most drum brains are sensitive to VELOCITY...so if i hit my drum soft with a trigger on it ....it plays the sample SOFT....and vice versa......its not cheating ...its just changing the sound of your drum ...id say 75% of drummers today use them on their bassdrums ......i used one recently ...only because i couldnt get a good recorded sound from my actual bassdrum .....it does even out the sound too ...cause the sound of the sample is always the same length.....but its not cheating....plus u can always layer the real drumsound with the sample sound...which is what i like to do ....

Where did I bash "drummers" for using them? I bashed Pete Sandoval for being lazy. I know what a trigger is and I know that they make SOME drummers lazy, Pete Sandoval being one of them. He does NOT hit his drums hard at all. I'm not saying he's bad, but I am saying he's lazy.

If you are playing the drums and they're miked up you don't have to hit them hard either. Sandoval hits them harder than most people think (heard him playing without PA) but he stays relaxed and doesn't use unnecessary movement (ie he uses good technique not pointless whaling). Plus Terrorizer's "World Downfall" wasn't triggered and that sounded pretty speedy to me.
The main reason drummers in fast bands use triggers is not for speed reasons but because the sound is always more defined and is much easier to mix.
Corporal Compendia
06-25-2002, 11:29 AM
Well I'm not alone when I say he's lazy... many others who have seen him will agree.
Another reason some drummers use them is to save time at concerts for the sound guys, it just makes things easier.

well "dude".. maybe you need too find out what they are becasue it can actually make some drummers lazy as they dont have to worry about how hard they hit tha kick drum becasue the trigger does the work for them..(It produces the same sound wether you smack the **** out of it or just touch it) Another reason why people sometimes say drummers are cheating when they are using triggers is becasue triggers have pre-programmed sounds so you can even programme in a sound bite that every time you hit tha kick drum once, the trigger would produce a triplet.. If this isnt cheating, then please let me know what is:p

Whoa Mr AngelDeath: You are an angry man - I like that! RR hasn't released anything good for years but Earache are going down the toilet too. I wasn't arguing with that but they saw that death metal wasn't as popular anymore so they moved onto the next big thing ie nu metal. The point is that once a label gets to a certain size they are in it for the money so why bother putting the money and effort into a style of music that was seen as old hat? I'm not saying this is right but it is unfortunately the way things work. For example Nuclear Blast was a death metal label but then BM became popular and then power metal and those are the bands that they are signing.

When you say the new Nile album - do you mean Black Seeds or the one that's not out yet? If it's the new one - tell us - what's it like etc? Here's a question for you all.... American or European Death metal? Which do you prefer? My vote is with European simply because there seems to be more experimentation whereas too many american bands are happy to just recreate all the same old riffs until they become cliches.
GertrudeMcCrack
07-08-2002, 08:46 AM
Too many American bands are produced by Scott Burns! Actually, i like them both, they're both different.

American Death Metal, by far is better, than that of Eruopean...and who gives a flyin **** who the Hell produces it...Scott Burns is the ****ing man, and is good at what he does. and you wanna talk diversity...Six Feet Under vs Deicide...Songs about Death, dying, Necrobiosis vs Deicide songs about bashing god and jesus, and hailing Satan. or how bout Morbid Angel and Nile...One band writes about the Necornomicon...Nile writes about egyption myth. Europeans enslave us on the power metal, goth metal, heavy metal, and black metal. Death Metal is our own. Ive listened to Vader...not to impressive Polish Death...compair them to the likes of the Godfathers of Death Metal, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Death the Europeans have nothing on us...why would anyone consider European to that of American:mad: why does there have to a format for everything...why cant anyone just listsen to music enjoy it for what it is...enjoy Death Metal rather then critize it...now **** off!!!
Jondur
07-10-2002, 03:41 AM
Yeah Scott Burns is so good at what he does that every single record he produced in the 90's sounded exactly the same. You've started off your post by saying American Death metal is by far the best ra ra ra but then you've ended by saying "why do we have to categorise etc... we should just enjoy the music" so basically you're arguing with yourself.
The reason I asked American Vs European is because there is a discernable difference between bands from the two continents.
There are hundreds of European Death metal bands - if you don't like Vader try Krabathor or Vomitory.
You say Europe enslaves us with power metal (mmm can't think of any US power metal bands) Goth Metal and black metal - yet you call yourself Mr Black metal (so black metal that you have a Dimmu Borgir avatar). That may be a cheap shot but you have made a rather agressive sounding post (in fact all your posts have had a "I'm more underground than thou" overtone to them.).
Diversity isn't about lyrics, it's about sound and musically European bands are more willing to experiment whereas 90% of US death metal bands sound exactly like bands who were around in 1992. "Hey listen to this new band called Morbid Suffocation, and Cannibal Death are really cool too".

I don't think that anyone can appreciate Cynic the first times they hear the band, eventhough Uroboric Forms is the oldest song and the least progressive it is pretty technical and complex and takes time to get into. I took me a few month's to fully appreciate Cynic and I still find new things to love in the music so try to get all the songs and give them as much time as they need because once you get into it you won't regrett it.

I have 2 : Infecting the crypts & Jesus Wept from Metalfest, If you don't have them I can send them once I get back to my T1 connection (in 3 weeks).
Try the people at Teufelstomb.com , some of them have a ****load of suffocation bootlegs and they might be interesting in trading so gice it a try if you are desperate.

FINALLY, i got the new Vader album, Revalations. It's awesome, miles better than Litany (which kicked arse anyway). Must see them live.

This thread cannot die! So I'll bump it by saying - Yes! you must see them live as they are an excellent live band! Really tight, good showmanship and excellent songs. I've seen them a couple of times including once at Wacken early on in the day but they got an amazing reception! People were thrashing around like mad regardless of the fact it was still morning!!
