I was the one who said it was too stale, but I don't have a problem with it now. That album was just one of those things where I thought it was 'cool but kinda meh too' and so I didn't listen to it much. Then today I put it in and just though 'whoa'. The same thing happened with Symphony X's album V.

Maybe this will happen with 'the sound of perseverance' as well. Because right now it's meh to me.

And is it just me, or can anyone else not stop listening to Shedding The Deadwood by Woods of Ypres? There's just something about that song, for me at least.

Almost as over-rated as Three Inches of Blood, but a decent band none the less.

Yay on Death, nay on Symphony X. Glad you woke up, took me quite a while to get into Human too. :chug:

It was my first death metal album and I immediately loved it. It's one of the most memorable death metal albums I've listened to so far and the riffage is intelligent!

I occasionally buy magazines, not regularly though. I did just get the first issue of Zero Tolerance, though.

One of my favourite things to do online is read reviews of albums, whether I've heard them or not. I spend a lot of time trying to track them down, and there's quite a few sites I visit regularly to browse. I'm always looking for new ones though, so if anyone has a decent site for reviews that I might not know about, let me know.

Well as of now, the only ones I've found were the final release of Blasphemy Made Flesh, None So Vile, and None So Live so I might end up getting NSV. I actually sort of like the worm era Cryptopsy, I think I just prefer DiSalvo.

Yes, all the lyrics on Hvis Lyset Tar Os are sung in Norse. It doesn't sound that much different from the other albums, as they all have norse vocals too. Musically, it is far more epic and melancholic than Burzum/Aske or Det Som Engang Var, songs are much longer are far more grandiose.

Burzum proves the lord of the rings is METAL, because the word 'Burzum' is elvish for 'Darkness'

Actually, Burzum translates to darkness in the dark tongue of mordor, not elvish. That makes it faaaar more metal.

And the song titles to Hvis Lyset Tar Os translate to What Which Once Was, Before the Light Took Us, Into the Castle of Dreams, and Emptiness. While it is not a concept album per say, the concept of the album is the christian occupation and indocrinization of Norway, and the destruction of Norway's Pagan roots.

well jondur "eastern block" how you call it has been infuenced by scandinavian death metal and grind core (grin is a metal band) well in my opinion all the bands are racing with each othwer whos faster whos got more 284's or 312's (breaked rythms) and what I notticed is that all band are trying to be faster than the first entombed guitar player. I know all of you got your favourite bands blah blah blah etc. but what criteria you take to say that that band sucks and other is great. Is it all about that they re singing bout violence blood satan sacrificing the blondie virgins destroying graves??? I dont know that I just said that I thing they re very good I ve got all theirs cds (with the best 'murderers concept' ) and i also asked which band is better than them. ok someone told me but whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????????????????????????? you guys like gorgut's from wisdom to hate or obscura better?

i own both and i like fwth better, just because i think the songs were better arranged and also have killer riffs (inverted, etc). also the enless, snail paced breakdowns from obscura are pretty much gone. only problem with the fwth album is that the base drum sounds really thin and lifeless, but everything else sounds killer
id recommend buying fwth over obscura

I really need to get back in the loop of good hard to find death/black metal. I'm getting bored of most of my cd's. I still listen to a lot of them, but it takes me forever to decide what to listen to because nothing really stands out. Maybe over this weekend I'll lock myself in the basement and find a bunch of new stuff.

NP: Alter Bridge - Broken Wings (I know...crappy rock). As much as I hate to admit it (and as much as it shouldn't really be in this thread), it's actually a somewhat decent album. Tremonti gets more credit in my book after listening to this album than he ever did with creed.

About the Mithras production, it has great production better than say Domination by Morbid Angel. People seem to think tinny guitars and hardly any bass = great production.

And about the triggers, what do you expect. If you took them away you wouldn't hear ****, its the only way to keep a consistently clear drum sound and thats why most death metal bands use them. Morbid Angel is triggered to **** and no one cares about that.

Does anyone know what the intro to that song is from? It sounds like Keifer Sutherland's voice so I didn't know if it was from a movie or what. It goes:

"First there was darkness. Then came the strangers. They were a race as old as time itself. They had mastered the ultimate technology; the ability to alter physical reality by will alone. They called this ability tuning. They were dying. Their civilization was in declin. So they abondoned their world seeking a cure for their own mortality. I don't know which is my favorite. Pure Holocaust, At The Heart Of Winter, Battles In The North...they're all really good. I guess for purposes of getting into them I'd say get Pure Holocaust.

NP: Kataklysm - 1999-6661-2000

Does anyone know what the intro to that song is from? It sounds like Keifer Sutherland's voice so I didn't know if it was from a movie or what. It goes:

"First there was darkness. Then came the strangers. They were a race as old as time itself. They had mastered the ultimate technology; the ability to alter physical reality by will alone. They called this ability tuning. They were dying. Their civilization was in declin. So they abondoned their world seeking a cure for their own mortality. Their endless journy brought them a small blue world in the farthest corner of the galaxy. Our world. Here they thought they had found what they had been searching for."

Yeah Dark City is a pretty cool film, really strange, and a good dark atmosphere. I saw it a while back and I liked it a lot.

What Toozey said. It's not that it's not black metally, just not as black metally as tr00er black metal. Strikes me as black metal built to play air-guitar to.

OBITUARY Bassist: We Will Make The Heaviest Album We've Ever Recorded

OBITUARY bassist Frank Watkins recently spoke to Decibel magazine about the songwriting process for the group's new studio album, tentatively due in 2005 through an as-yet-undetermined label (most likely Roadrunner). Watkins described the group's new material as "Going towards more of our older style, more like the 'Slowly We Rot' or 'Cause of Death' era; we're not really going to experiment like we did on past albums. We're trying to make this album as brutal as we possible can, we're going to try to make it the heaviest album we've ever recorded."

With regards to how the legendary death metal band's reunion came about, Watkins said that ANDREW W.K. (whose band features OBITUARY drummer Donald "D.T." Tardy) was playing Ozzfest in 2002, "He asked me and John [Tardy, OBITUARY vocalist] if we'd get up with them and do a song, so we did it, and then just from there it kind of sparked more interest in all of us to get back together, so we called everybody and it took about a year and a half, and we just said, 'We should start doing it again.'"

TH is the rawest and most minimalistic of the first four albums. If you love minimalistic black metal, get Transilvanian Hunger. However, if you prefer the sound of A Blaze in the Northern Sky, get Under a Funeral Moon. It's sort-of the transition between ABitNS, and TH. If you want to hear good Scandinavian death metal, get Soulside Journey. Sounds nothing like the darkthrone that proceeds it.

"Unas Slayer of the Gods" is a death metal classic, as far as I'm concerned. The title track(s) are pretty cool too, especially tracks 9 and 12.

Defunct Swedish thrashers THE CROWN have announced plans to issue a posthumous three-disc DVD set in the near future. According to a posting on the group's web site, the upcoming set will be "a colossal damage to head and eyes!! This magnificent hail to the fans will take you on a dangerous rollercoaster-ride deep within the halls of hell. Forget everything you`ve heard. You have it all on tape here — the true story of THE CROWN. The final chapter, written in blood, sweat and tears on a shiny silver plate out to kill (the priest) one last time. WATCH OUT!!!!"

THE CROWN recently issued a posthumous CD, "Crowned Unholy", featuring a free bonus DVD, entitled "The Crown Invades Karlsruhe". The DVD, which is not to be confused with the above-mentioned separate release, is a full live show filmed professionally on THE CROWN's last tour in Karlsruhe, Germany on November 24, 2003.

"Crowned Unholy" is a remake of the band's fifth album, "Crowned In Terror", with re-recorded vocal tracks by Johan Lindstrand, re-recorded bass tracks by Magnus Olsfelt, a new version of the intro (originally written by guitarist Marko Tervonen, now programmed by drummer Janne Saarenpää), drum sound digitally enhanced by Janne, and cool synthesizer-spiced parts, all programmed by Janne.
