View Full Version : any other death heads?

ive gotten most of those bands right.. im finnish so its sort of easier to figure those weird ones out..
Some info on Amorphis: "My Kantele" Kantele is an instrument, it is a big part of a great finnish national epic (Kalevala)which was compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884) from ancient oral poetry. He gathered these poems from an area called Karelia (in finnish=Karjala). It was a part of finland until the russians decided that they needed more land. And thats how Amorphis formed a name for their first album "The Kalerian Isthmus" . Also the lyrics on "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" are based on the epic. They follow two main storylines (The names of the songs are the actual names of the poems in Kalevala).
aaaa, i could write about what goes on in the songs, and how they relate to the poems... but.. im too tired.. and i dont know if anyone is interested.
Also J.R.R Tolkien admited that he was influenced by Kalevala, and the elf language he came up with has some finnish words in it..

Which Winds album would I be better off getting? Only between Reflections of the I and The Imaginery Direction of Time, though. I don't know if they'd made anything else anyway.

Hi guys! I'd like you to suggest me some technical, progressive, atmospheric death metal groups. I've already checked some "popular" ones (and not only) like death, atheist, cynic, nocturnus, pestilence, demilich, demigod etc and I'm looking for more. Demo groups suggestions welcome!
Not really atmospheric, but for technical, I guess you could check out Necrophagist. There are still a couple of mp3s for download at his website (www.necrophagist.com, or .de if you speak German).

Well, both albums are incredibely good. 'The Imaginery Direction of Time' definitely has the better guitar work (of the two), I prefer 'The Imaginery...' over 'Reflections of I'

And for anyone's reservations about the NS part of NSBM, Graveland is NS in Darken's ideology only. There is not a single Graveland song that I can think of that deals with National Socialism or race.
What's Darken's ideology?
Don't go yelling about how names could be misinterpreted, we all know there is no connection between the nazis and death metal, and some of us are also hardcore marxists or anarchists.
And if you want to go that way, a little game for you: just count all the nazi symbols on any Slayer album. Have fun.

What's Darken's ideology?
As far as I know, Darken is a pro- 14 words Pagan, and anti-zionist. I've never seen him mention supporting National Socialism in any of his interviews, but I do gather that he is a revisionist, or at least believes that philosphy.
I think that Black and Pagan metal has nothing to do with politics. Black metal is a satanic music created by people inspired by Satanism. Pagan metal is played by people respecting culture and beliefs of our pagan ancestors. These people believe in the same Gods our ancestors believed. Music is music and it has nothing to do with politics. But of course band members can have political convictions, they can support what they think is right. If we do not want to see our world destroyed by our enemies we must have political convictions. I have never hidden that I support he right wing politics… I have right to spread my political convictions through Graveland activities… because music is not the only thing that is important in my life.
I think that one must bring credit to be a member of a race or of a nation by one's own deeds and behavior... by heroism and never-ending development. It makes us White People. Not a passport. Because today the majority of Europeans are just scum... subhuman.. .and I think that although many people have German passports, it does mean that automatically they are supermen!!! Today Germans are rather associated with homosexuals than with Wotan descendants!!!
People of different nations have different origins... so people are different. Our origins are based not only on the colour of our skin, eyes and hair but on, what is even more important, on the spirit bound in our blood. Our identity, character and will are connected with cleanness of our blood… inherited from our forefathers. Purity of the blood ensures the proper physical and mental development. It also gives us answers about the sense of our lives. The power which a White man found in himself to develop a civilization... to search… to conquer… this power is a symbol of a White Man. The never-ending searching... the unsatisfied desire of eternal development distinguishes a White Man on the field of never-ending fight for survival.
I am trying for my music to be separated from my political convictions. I think that I have answered this question already. The art of Graveland is not proper to spread political ideas. Epic style of Graveland is not proper for politics… it is too spiritual. But of course the music I play in Graveland is too some degree connected with my political convictions. When I play Graveland music I treat it as a weapon in the fight for my convictions. But still I try Graveland to have an epic style.

I've heard positive comments and read encouraging reviews. However there were some saying that Decapitated do nothing but using the same typical death metal formula without offering something new to the genre although their label suggested them to change a bit. Yeah right, you dont progress unless you become nu-ish...
Anyway, I've listened to a couple of tracks and I think they are fine. Straight forward technical brutal death metal, what else to ask? If you only get Nihility then you should get Winds of Creation, it's supposed to be their classic.

He's in jail for assault. No blood drinking was involved. He wouldn't serve jail time if he hadn't been convicted for violence in the past. The whole case stinks, and he probably wouldn't have been convicted if it wasn't for his previous crimes, and obviously, the fact that he plays "devil music" and "satan rock".

Okay, I think I'll be ordering some CDs later tonight, but the list I've made is still 1 over the maximum I can order. Here are the ones I'm not certain on, so out of these;
Agalloch - The Mantle
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Septic Flesh - A Fallen Temple
Ephel Duath - The Painter's Palette
Gandalf - Rock Hell
which do you guys think I should drop? Any advice on different albums by the same band or anything like that also welcome, thanks.

Agalloch - Totally agree with "The Mantle"
Carcass - People who liked carcass melodic direction would go with Heartwork. I like them both.
Septic Flesh - I'd go with Sumerian Deamons...sadly they split after this although their most complete work
Ephel Duath - some weird avant grade italian guys? I've never listened to any of their songs. Not very close and maybe already checked but how about some Gorguts?
Gandalf - Never heard of them
Bartender

I've already got Heartwork, which is why I went for Necroticism. Gorguts (Illuminatus) would definitely be on the list if the store I'm ordering from had it; even so, they've got a very different sound to Ephel Duath on the Painter's Palette.
I think Ephel Duath is what I'll drop anyway. But does anyone have any opinions on which Septic Flesh/Gandalf albums to go with?

Coroner is still the best death metal come quasi industrial metal band ever recorded. There last two albums contained no hyper blast beats but what it gave the metal world was two sublime albums of mastery of a genre that does not have to be defined by extremity and glass gargling behaviours.
Sure Cryptopsy do their thing and its really quite insane. Suffocation do the same with brutality and on Pierced From Within achieve cult status.
Coroner did it with a shift after the more traditional death metal of No More Colour.
There has never been a band that has sounded like this. If you have never checked them out you must.

LP is a full length album. LP used to refer to the big 12 inch records back before the days of CDs and Cassettes, an EP was on a 7" record, which holds roughly about 12 minutes if its 33RPM, and about 8 or 9 if its a 45RPM.
As for why some people buy vinyl, some do collect it and others genuinely like the sound of vinyl over the CD. They feel the cd is too perfect, and picks up unavoidable errors in digital media. By covering a smaller band of frequencies, but not too small, the Record is able to cut out these imperfections while still keeping the sound quality pretty good. I have a few records, but not many. It seems on crappier sounding recordings, the vinyl does sound better though.

Flynn: there is definitely something wrong with your 5150 then, because the 5150 is one high class amp. That is simply fact.
Here are a few things to check out:
1. your tubes. if your tubes are shot, then you arent going to have an amp worth listening to. the tubes are the amp.
2. the gain. the gain on 5150's should never really have to go past 6 or so, because the amount of gain gained is essentially negligable... and all you gain is static hiss noise.
3. the clean channel sucks, deal with it. you have a 5150, and its for distortion. lol
4. dont crank the presence unless you want to sound like Darkthrone (which isnt bad)
5. the resonance doesnt really do much of anything
6. get an EQ pedal, because the eq on the 5150 isnt that impactful
trust me dude, ive owned and gigged with my same 5150 for over 3 years. i know my baby...haha

The band, which will be based out of Los Angeles, is "only a recording project, on paper at this point," Durkin told BLABBERMOUTH.NET. "I wrote a song for them, but we have not done anything yet. I look forward to making music with them. But my main focus is and always has been DREAMS OF ****ATION. Everything revolves around DREAMS OF ****ATION for me."
A name for the group has not yet been determined.
B.War quit MARDUK earlier this year to move to Los Angeles (from Sweden) to be with his family. Legion and his family will also be relocating to Los Angeles later this year.

Yeah, isnt Jon just out of prison ?
He looks soooo different now - on 'Lights Bane he had the long black hair, the stern face et all. But now he's got a shaven head and he's ... filled out a bit. Suppose thats what 8 years does to you.
How do you think the new material will shape up ?

Yes, indeed he just got out of prison (last week, I think.)
I'm betting the new material will own, Jon's calling some of the best stuff he's written yet, plus he said he is incorporating riffs that he wrote before he went into prison. He's had eight years to write it, so it better be good.

I was actually refering to records, yes. I saw Arghoslent released a 12" Record of Incorrigible Bigotry so I was curious.
What type of digital media errors are you talkign about? Too perfect?
ANGELDEATH IN THE STUDIO LATER TODAY WHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
Good luck in the studio.
When you mentioned Darkthrone, were you talking about the black metal DT or the Death one?
how versatile do you consider the 5150?
xAzagthothx
08-13-2004, 05:56 PM
Ninja: I was talking about the black metal darkthrone.
As for the 5150's versatility... it really doesnt have much of that. Its simply the 5150 sound. It has its own unique dirty sound, and thats pretty much all it does hah.

If you downloaded tracks from Onset of Putrefaction, it's all the work of just one guy (writing, playing/programming, recording and whatever). He started writing the lyrics when he was 15 or so though, which goes a way to explaining them.
For recommendations, you could check out Sinners Bleed. I've not heard much by them, but what I've heard is somewhat like Necrophagist. That's a second hand recommendation though - credit should go to Legions and Per Ardua, I think, as I first heard about them from them.

Well this is the account of his story which I read.
Necrophagist is the amazing success story of a one man death metal arsenal named Muhammed Suicmez. A German citizen and the son of strict Turkish immigrants who wanted a traditional upbringing for their child, he was forbidden to play guitar. Naturally, he did what anyone possessed with the will to create would do, and taught himself the instrument in secrecy. Starting in 1990 at age fifteen Muhammed began writing a full album of material that would appear first as a demo, and finally as the phenomenal Onset of Putrefaction in 1998. If you aren't impressed or interested yet, consider the following: The entirety of the finished product was recorded by Muhammed himself with no professional training while he was at university studying Mechanical Engineering. Maybe I am more blown away because I had to work very hard for two years engineering with better equipment than he had access to before I ever produced anything this spectacular sounding, but there is no denying the raw talent displayed by this man. A couple guitars, a PC, and a drum machine to hold down the rhythm section; Odin's frosty beard this guy is amazing!
xAzagthothx
08-17-2004, 02:08 AM
Wow... thats ****ing incredible if i do say so myself. But it kind of doesnt surprise me, what with actually how awesome the record simply is. Is it saying, however, that the guy never took lessons, and actually ****ing like got those scales that he rips by simply noodling around with the guitar?
If so... that is ****in somethin man
As to the intelligent band lyric discussion, here are some of my top picks:
Morbid Angel - sings songs pertaining to the massive grand theme of breaking down any barriers or indoctrination of human beings which would cause them to not realize their truest potential or essence. Morbid Angel owns everybody.
Nile - like everyone said, the Egyptian theme. Whats really cool is that a lot of the lyrics are direct quotations from like ancient, old-*** papyri and books. Barra Edinazzu is taken from the Necronomicon, as well as a large portion of Defiling the Gate of Ishtar. The Black Seeds jacket has a whole portion dedicated to explaining where all the lyrics come from. Nile wins something wicked.
