BeelzeBloke

People will insist that Lovecraft invented the existance of the madness-inducing book of eldritch lore, the "Necronomicon"...
Others will say that Lovecraft referred to a real book, written by the mad arab Abdul Alhazred...
There's 2 you'll find the most, the one with the introduction by "Simon" and "George Hay's Necronomicon: The Book of Dead Names".
Which have you got/seen?

07-11-2004, 02:13 PM
yeah... Lovecraft coined the term and created everything in regards to it. Theres an essay he wrote, or some kind of letter rather, that explains how he came up with it while dreaming.

The Simon version is the one i have, and it is easily the most popular. If you look hard enough, you'll find some Morbid Angel and Nile lyrics abound within....hehe

Don't know them at all, but their record label is fairly new and is also the label of the band Andromeda, which is a very good prog metal band IMO.

So i did the Naglfar thing today. Here's the full story:

At around 12.30, the guitarist showed up and went down to the rehersal room. I introduced myself, and gave him the paper with the questions on it. (He wanted time to prepare.)

Then we went down the rehersal room and just chatted for awhile. Talked some guitars etc.. Then he went outside and waited for the rest of the band.

When everyone except the second guitarist had showed up, we all went to the rehersal room and talked about the layup of the whole thing. We had decided to do a video with the interview mixed with some live footage and some of the band rehersing. They were all very cool guys and was always very nice.

After the arrival of the second guitarist, they started playing. Jens didn't sing though, as he was saving his voice for a big gig they have tommorow.
We filmed a couple of songs, maybe 4 or 5, then put the camera aside and just listened. They were even working on some new songs while we were there.

Then we decided to do the interview. We grabbed Marcus and Kristoffer (Guitar and Bass), and just started working on it. They weren't all that chatty at the interview, but i didn't expect them to be. The whole thing went down real smoth though.

After the interview the guys gave me a personolised autograph ( ), and we did a short photo session in the attict.

Were gonna start editing the interview on monday, and i should be able to get a transcipt up by then.

Overall the guys were very cool, and very nice. The drummer was a bit abscent though, but he was damn good.
We are also getting in touch with them next week, as we are editing the thing.

In other metal news, i picked up "Meshuggah - I" today.
It fukking rocks, i just wish it was a bit longer.

EDIT: My band has a recording now, it's not one of our best songs, plus it's got no vocals as it was done on one mic. The sound quality is meh and the bass is way way way too loud but some of you still probably want to hear it.
I'm going on Vacation today, so i won't be able to send it but you can just ask SensitiveOrgan00 or Superpeer for it as they already have it.

this is from a Darkthrone review on metal-archives:
They were originally a DM band, then "famously" switched to raw BM. Anyway, you all know the history, now onto the album.

What do they mean "famously"? what happened?

Ihsahn
07-15-2004, 07:57 PM
Its probably referring to the fact that A Blaze in the Northern Sky was a landmark in black metal. They were contracted to make more death metal albums for Peaceville, but got fed up with what death metal was becoming. They sent them A Blaze in the Northern Sky tapes, Peaceville was angered and skeptical, but released it anyway, history was made.

On another note, tomorrow night Cryptopsy's playing a set down at the (ugh) Funhaus (Toronto, Ontario). Wondering if anyone from here is going down to catch them, even though it is a ****ing club night.

Just a question, why do bands come out with casettes?

Like, i was checking out Arghoslent's webpage and they came out with a few casettes of albums that they already came out with on CD.
And why do bands typically come out with demo tapes rather than demo CDs? Isn't it easier to make CDs? Or do they usually use 4-tracks mixers or something?

Pestilence really suffers from Death Syndrome. They had everything going for them early on, then they blew it away trying to do something they shouldn't have. Testimony of the ancients Is an annoying stop-start album (i hate little interludes wrecking the flow of an album) and Consuming Impulse is teh pawn. Excellent album, although i think Malleus Maleficarum just comes in before it. :D

How many of you have reviewed (or are planning to review) things in CD Reviews?

There are depressingly few death, black or doom (only 1, I think) reviews there.

That only doom album was mine, I suppose.

I'll try to do some more if I get my order in.

Buy Spheres. They pulled it off quite nicely.

Pestilence really suffers from Death Syndrome. They had everything going for them early on, then they blew it away trying to do something they shouldn't have.

What did Death do that they shouldn't have?

So was early Carcass grind, and then the later stuff is more melodic type death metal?

lilpete86

And even later carcass was death and roll

I know some people don't like The Sound of Perseverance by Death, but I think it's awesome.

If you're talking about getting progressive with albums such as Human, I think it is the best thing that happened to them.

Yeah, not just the musical but lyrical progression as well, although something about the production on Human bugs me. It just seems so stale and mechanical. The songs are still excellent, but it's hard for me to enjoy them on that album for some reason. For example, Suicide Machine sounds so much better on Live and Raw than the actual album. Am I nuts, or does anyone else hear it like this too?

My favorite Pestilence album is Testimony of the Ancients. It's quite different from Spheres, but is excellent none the less. My favorite song off the album has to be Stigmatized. Great riffs, quite progressive sounding, good mellow sections.

Cool, thanks, I'll look into that.

In other news:

"Sweden's IN FLAMES have announced two rare coastal shows in late September. The details are as follows:

Sep. 26 - Roxy - Los Angeles, CA
Sep. 29 - C.B.G.B. - New York, NY

IN FLAMES will play two full sets at each concert; the first set will be the whole new album, "Soundtrack To Your Escape", released on April 6, 2004. The second set will consist of all the classics from the group's previous albums. There will be no support band at either show. The gigs will be recorded for future release.

"Soundtrack To Your Escape" has sold over 46,000 units to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan."

From Blabbermouth.com. Shi.t, I want to go now.

Nar, he's a black metaller that knows what good music is. :p j/k

The best death album, in my opinion, is Scream Bloody Gore, Then either Spiritual healing or Leperosy. All the others, in my opinion, aren't to flash. Although Individual thought patterns can usualky hold my attention for the whole album. :)

Oh, and about my Pestilence remark a few pages back: In my opinion, Spheres is their worst album. People need to ckeck out their others before they progress to Spheres, as all others better. :) I've listened to spheres a few times over the last couple of days, and it is pretty light weight. The whole album seems to drag out. Anyway, like I said, that's my opinion. I hold Coroner in the same light; their first 3 albums were class albums, but they changed direction and went onto something that didn't really suit 'Coroner'.

Yeah, :)
