Errr... 1st DM songs were off the "At Deaths Door" compilation from Roadrunner back when they were a good label - so thats "Dead by Dawn" - Deicide, Obituary, Pestilence etc. can't remember which songs but the Pestilence song (off "Consuming Impulse") especially made a huge impact on me.

ps those immortal pics were pretty cool. I saw them the other week and they're even funnier in real life! Good band tho

Cannibal Corpse got me into Death Metal, with Hammer Smashed Face. the first time i heared that song it was in Ace Ventura and i liked it right away (DM vocals always sounded great to me) unfortunatly at the time i didn't know anyone who was into that kind of music and you couldn't really get it over here so i didn't get any DM records until abour a year and a half ago (1st two i bought were Tomb Of The Mutilated by CC and Cause of Death by Obituary) after that i slowly started getting more and more into it until i became totally hooked to it about a year ago.

HAIL DEATH METAL!!!!

I got into it with Obituary's 'World Demise.' It's not the best, but it kind of fits between Sepultura's 'Chaos AD' and heavier stuff.

I started off seriously when I heard 'She was asking for it' by Cannibal Corpse, I just loved that song and shortly after that I got Carcass - Necroticism Descanting the insalubrious, and from the after that there was no turning back. Still funny that after all theese years I still love that album just as much despite the hundreds of listenes to it.

i, too, got my first taste of real extreme music with Cannibal Corpse doing "Hammer Smash Face" in Ace Ventura. ive always been around extreme music. my uncle is very active in the hardcore scene so i grew up around that. after i heard CC in ace ventura, i kinda faded out of the heavy music scene, not hearing anything about the band, only repeating it over and over in my head. then in middle school, my friend played me Manson and Korn and i was hooked. i 8th grade i became very into Slipknot and Soulfly. slipknot, with its obvious death metal references, got me more into that. Soulfly....i found Sepultura via Max Cavalera. at the time, he defined heavy for me. i got into Sepultura alot....and became immersed in the underground scene. my next big obsession was Fear Factory and Meshuggah. i had always heard people praising meshuggah on the internet, so i download "Choirs of Devastation" and i was hooked. i dont remember how i got into Fear Factory....but i assume it was just downloading a bunch of songs. then....around summer between 8th and 9th grade....someone suggested Morbid Angel's "Rapture" as a good example of trem picking. i downloaded it, and i was floored. Soon i rediscovered the masterpiece that is "Hammer Smash Face", found out who those Egyptian weirdos are in Nile and the rest is history.

key songs that got me into metal:

start:

Cannibal Corpse "Hammer Smash Face"
Marylyn Manson "Beautiful People"
Korn "Blind" and "Faggot"
Limp Bizkit "Break Stuff"

moving into....

Slipknot "Sic" "Wait and Bleed"
Soulfly "Bleed" "No Hope No Fear"
Sepultura "Roots Bloody Roots" "Chaos AD"
Meshuggah "Choirs Of Devastation"
Fear Factory "Self Bias Resistor" Obsolete"

the pinnacle:

Morbid Angel "Rapture" "God Of Emptiness" "Where The Slime Live"

Cannibal Corpse "Hammer Smash Face"

Nile "Ramses Bringer Of War"

wow thats crazy

It seems like a fairly natural progression for today. Whereas I went from Maiden to Metallica to Slayer, it would be more Korn - Slipknot - Nile nowadays.

Little question....what do you people think of CoF...I know some people that are pretty big fans...how do you view them?

They're getting pretty mainstream for a black metal (right?) band.

Musically they are a disgrace but if they can get people into black and death metal I applaud it.

I think they're ok, Principle of Evil Made Flesh and Dusk And Her Embrace are cool, but recently they've been getting a bit too goth-y for me. Cool image, mind! Everybody check out my incomplete tab of Cthulu Dawn in tab talk, just one riff to get!

Shut up you ***** ****** ***** (I put the asterisks in myself to save the system the trouble) Death Metal has nothing to do with moaning about your own life or self loathing! You seem to be thinking of nu-metal which has got nothing to do with death metal! If you don't like death metal why have you posted in a thread entitled "any other death heads"??!! There's a thread on Godsmack at the moment and I think they're crap so consequently I haven't posted anything! No go away and let us continue to talk about death metal and how much we hate both NoFX and No Use for a Name!

I like their older stuff better. Lately they are concentrating more on their image than on their music. It's not a bad image, I like the whole Satan, Vampire etc, it's just that their music is suffering. I guess them being "mainstream" doesn't bother me, if it get's other people into the music, more power to them.

You could be right there because the people that like them alot that I know are pretty big Goth fans too...lol.

The Cynic CD you put up for download rules BTW coypu.

Ok new question. (hehe) What do you people think of.

A. Immortal. (did I spell that right?)
B. Emperor.

GertrudeMcCrack

A. Immortal rule, as far as i'm concerned, Sons Of Northern Darkness is right up there with the old stuff!

B. We already discussed this, i think. The last Emperor album was a bit of a disappointment, but it's still ok. And as for Anthems... \m/:D\m/

BTW what do you think of Mayhem and Darkthrone, Give me Beer?

I'm glad you liked it and if you want anything else just let me know!

A. Never really liked them since I'm not really into that part of black metal. I'm more into black vs. death like Darkthrone (1:st & Goatlord), Aeturnus & Dissection. Burzum is an exception though.

B. I have only heard their stuff on the live album but I think that it is really great and their bassplayer is a very cool guy so I have to give them extra creadit for that.

I haven't heard anything by them sorry...the only DM I've heard yet is the stuff Coypu gave me and some scattered songs over the web by CoF, Morbid Angel, CC etc...not that much....

And Coypu, you were right, the vocals are growing on me... :) After a few more hours of listening I might even start liking them...they don't bother me that much anymore so that's a start. ;)

Don't worry, I HATE copied or burned albums. I ALWAYS buy my CDs for real, I don't have that much money to spend so it could take me months to get to it but eventually I always buy the CD. (like focus by cynic, I will buy that album even though I already have it on my computer now...)

I'm currently buying all DT albums ... I still need the first one, Falling into infinity, Scenes from NY and once in a Livetime, after that I'll start buying some DM albums. Eased your mind? ;)

I checked my list and this is the only bootleg I have is :
Morbid Angel - Evil Live (bootleg 88)

I have it only in mp3 but if you want it just let me know.

Give Me Beer : The spastic is sold out anyway but I just feel for the guy so when he releases it I will buy it myself and hopefully some others will too. I personally have a ****load of ripped albums in mp3 that cost me nothing so I'm a bad boy but I always buy the good stuff like Immolation and such to easy my mind.

The songs are on my other hard drive so I'll upload tomorrow for you.

I found this site with bootleg info & soundclips : http://angemorbide.free.fr/bootlegs.html , the Blessed are the boots bootleg is not brilliant but it works, I really recomend that you listen to the soundclips before purchase.

60 bucks is abit much in my view, try Mirc first atleast or try to find a better deal if possible.

I have heard their material and considering that they have Tyr and Asgeir Mickelson in the band you will not haveto doubt the great talent in the band.

The vocals are Clean/Black and the music is melodic and very musical and far from primitive black metal. I would not name this band as black metal but something different. I think this stuff is great and would probably appeal to thoose who aren't too hardcore true blackmetallers but more fans of stuff like Opeth and the lighter stuff.

Immortal - Great band...Almost got to see them last friday in Detroit, but couldn't find anyone to work my shift for me:( ****ed in Black and Battles in the North are the best. Sons of the Northern Darkness in really good too.

Emperor - They're ok. Not my favorite band but still worth listening too occasionaly.

Mayhem - Pure Norwegian Black metal! Dead and Euronomous(not sure how to spell it) were true black emperors. Too bad the new Mayhem sucks balls.

Darkthrone - What can you say...pure, raw, primitive black metal. One of my favorites.

Borknagor - I've only heard one song that was downloaded and the quality wasn't very good so I'm not really sure.

All Hail Black metal!!!!

I'm really learning something about Death Metal in this thread.

Ok here comes another request, (hope you don't get tired of them coypu ;) ) ... Do you have any Spiral Architect MP3's?

There was a link on Spastic Ink's website to theirs and now I'm interested in hearing them.

I'm asking you this stuff because I can't download Audiogalaxy or similar programs on my computer. It would be easier if I could but ...

BTW...Do you know when Spastic Ink's new album is going to be released? Because it says on their website that they will not re-release the old CD again until the new one's out...

Here's one for you: Some of Coypu's compatriots: Ominous!
A lot of you have said you enjoy Meshuggah so you should appreciate these guys. I think they're an excellent band. Their website (www.omissa.com) hasn't been updated for ages but it's got some mp3's .

I'm not a huge Borknagor fan - Arcturus are way better!
I'm not a fan of the "grim " style black metal - I like some of the original stuff (Deathcrush, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, In these trees are my gallows etc) but I've no time for bands who are still peddling the same stuff now!

heres something to spark some conversation that i was thinking about this morning while listening to "Covenant" by Morbid Angel....what do you think are certain bands songs that have the most evil sounding riffs?

Morbid Angel:

Thy Kingdom Come
Rapture (main chorus riff)
World Of ****
Sworn To The Black
God Of Emptiness (entire song)
Ceasars Palace
Heaving Earth (intro)
Chambers Of Dis (after solo)
Hellspawn: The Rebirth (the intro takes the cake for this i think)

Nile:

Ramses Bringer Of War (when the guitar comes in....wow)
Black Seeds Of Vengeance (w/ the gong...chanting the title)
Masturbating The War God
Beneath Eternal Oceans Of Sand

Kataklysm:

Mould In A Breed
Sorcery
Orb Of Uncreation

lemme see what you think. i think the intro to Morbid Angel's "Hellspawn: The Rebirth" takes the cake for the whole thing.

Not exactly sure what a evil riff sounds like but this came to mind :

Immolation :

I feel nothing
No Jesus No beast

almost any song from this band would do

Incantation :

Demonic Incarnate (the first riff mostly)

Possessed :

Evil Warriors
Pentagram
Burning in Hell

Rigor Mortis :

Condemned to hell

I got a few songs and they are up there with Cause for Effect but my personal fav is still Scrawl. If I get access to a studio the next year (maybe with some luck) I'm gonna do a one man band that is fusion grind, it's gonna be sweet.

No the song is from their album Control & Resistance.

Evil Riffs:

Deicide: Dead By Dawn (the second bit)
Death: Infernal Death (intro)
Nile: The Howling Of The Jinn (last bit)
Anaal Nathrakh: Submission Is For The Weak
Morbid Angel: World Of Sh*t
Vader: World Of Hurt
and the daddy of evil riffs, Kataklysm: Sorcery

BTW even though it's not DM, the main riff on Slayer's 'Bloodline' sounds kind of evil as well.

There is a story behind thoose lyrics + it is a parody of CC - A skull full of maggots which explain the 'Chris Barness is a faggot' x4.

From the Interview : http://www.thegrimoire.com/anal_cunt2.htm

I shall have to give Blood Duster a call. In any case, I heard that thou called Chris Barnes "gay," and then punched him in the face, and then his roadies beat thee up.

The non-exaggerated true story is, they were playing, and me and my guitarist were heckling them the whole show. And then after he got off
stage I said, "Ha ha. You got kicked out of Cannibal Corpse. " And he, like, walked over and tried to grab me. It was like being grabbed by a 3-year-old. I was like, "What? You want to fight me or something?" He's like, "Yeah."
"Anyway, let's go outside. " My back was turned in front of him as we were walkin toward the door so I can beat him up outside. Then I got jumped by like 5 of the roadies and band members. And then I got thrown out of theclub by the bouncers.

Anyone heard the new Necrophobic & Cenotaph albums yet?

I like the Cenotaph album but it is less melodic and more harsh than their old stuff which really doesn't fit the music very well but it is still good stuff. Definately worth checking out!

The Necrophobic sounds alot like their 'third antichrist' and while catchy the guitars and vocals sound pretty weak but the songs are enjoyable and stick very easily so I would say that is worthy but not amazing.

Many great bands started back in the 80's but Possessed are the guys that really should get the most credit. They really created death metal and just listen to Morbid Angels early stuff and hear how much influences they got from Possessed.

Carcass & Death are worth to mention too.

I got the new Cenotaph album, to be honest i was a bit disappointed, i don't mind it being less melodic, i just didn't think the songs were as strong. On the 80s thing, it's worth mentioning Celtic Frost, and Terrorizer, but Possessed definitely deserve the most credit, mainly cos they have a song called 'Death Metal!'

I agree completely on Cenotaph, the old stuff had alot more passion and feeling. Soul Profundis is one of the greatest songs ever, to bad the new stuff isn't of the same caliber.

Speaking of old bands, Rigor Mortis are a very good death metal band that faded out early but their songs are really great with lots of attitude and really nice shredding solos. Download Shroud of Doom thoose of you that have never heard them.

I think Terrorizer was Pete's finest hour. Neither is Bill Ward. Anyway, time for another discussion: everybody name 5 DM tracks that we can't possible live without hearing. Mine would be

1)Death - Infernal Death
2)Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face
3)Carcass - Heartwork
4)Obituary - Slowly We Rot
5)Deicide - Dead By Dawn

It's pretty hard to narrow it down to 5, i had to choose between Death and Morbid Angel! But i figured most of you are familiar with them, and for some reason a few people aren't familiar with Death, plus i didn't want to disrespect Chuck!

1) Cynic - Veil of Maya
2) Atheist - Mother Man

4) Suffocation - The Invoking
5) Gorguts - Illuminatus

I avoided all the classics since they are bound to be mentioned anyway.

Deicide - Dead by Dawn

Death - Pull the Plug

Hammer Smash Face - Cannibal Corpse

Yeah I've seen Nile twice and they are a truly crushing live band! The first time I saw them is in my top 5 live gigs! Speaking of which name your 5 favourite bands you've seen live (DM bands that is) and the year if you want:

1) At The Gates Manchester 1996
2) Morbid Angel Wacken 2000
3) Nile Belfast 2000
4) Obsidian Leeds 2001
5) Ackercocke Manchester 1999

ps. the official Nile website www.nile-catacombs.com is pretty cool.

I've only been to a couple DM shows. Most death bands don't come around here. They either go to Chicago or Detroit. I'm right between them. 3 hour drive either way. I saw Cannibal Corpse and Dark Funeral in Detroit a couple of months ago, and I saw Morbid Angel a few years ago when they opened for Black Sabbath. I am going to go see Nile in July though. They're playing in Detroit.

Best live DM/extreme shows (about the only ones i've been to!):
Nile
Morbid Angel/Zyklon/Cadaver Inc
Dimmu Borgir/In Flames
Napalm Death/Ginger (seriously!)
Dillinger Esape Plan/Nasum

Nile and Dillinger were at the Mean Fiddler, Dimmu and Napalm were at the Astoria. Can't remember where Morbid Angel were.

Not sure of exact years, looking back it's all a bit of a blur...

NEway, last gig I seen was Cannibal Corpse last year, BRUTAL!
But I need to catch Nile...

So, anyone interested in doing guitar or bass tabs for any normal song on Atheist - Element's album? I have soon tabbed all the bass for the 2 first albums so thoose are almost done so know there is only one album left.

Alright, we're on page 2 again which sucks alot so let us pull out the critic inside us and try to find the weak sides of death metal that should be improved for the future if possible.

Here is what I could think of:

* Way to many unoriginal clone bands that does nothing new but only puts out avarage death metal.

* Too little good basslines and bassplayers, most band just settle with pick and playing along with the rhytmn guitar making the a pretty unimortant instrument. Here is alot to improve when it comes to writing and playing interesting basslines in Death Metal. My favorites are : Atheist, Cynic & Gorguts sofar.

* Most vocalists doesn't seem to be pushing their skills further, I think that they all should try to learn more tecniques and add more passion into the vocals. Lord Worm are a good rolemodel here.

* The drumming, while there are many amazing drummers many settle for just being fast and doesn't really explore rhytmns the way I would wish they did. I think that Steve Flynn of Atheist sets a good example of how it could be done and Paul in CC is a bad example.

* I also wish that most bands would experiment more but I'm also glad that bands that are into something really good keep it that way (suffocation, Immolation, Incantation, Bolt Thrower).

That is about it for now.

Coypu,

About what you said about Paul from CC's drumming,

I think the problem is that CC's songs don't leave a lot of room for great drumming like that of Flo Mounier or Pete Sandoval. But I think he does a good job when he gets the chance its just that some of CC's are really simple grind rythms.

It really doesn't work that way, let us say that you put Sean Reinert (Cynic, Death ...) in the band, would he play the exact same stuff as Paul or would he be doing alot more advanced stuff? I'm pretty sure he would do alot better job and play alot more interesting stuff just because he is better than Paul. Paul is a solid a tight drummer with great stamina but he lacks in invention and he is not very creative as I see it. (I would still kill to get Paul in my own band but that is another story...).

As you can see the song is from their first album which in my view is their weakest but I still love it. If you like more straight up technical death metal you must get The Erosion of Sanity since it is their last non experimental death metal album and it is great. Obdcura still rules all though.

Tony Choy is probably the best Death Metal bassist of all time and I wish that he would join Atheist when/if they reunite but unfortunately it doesn't look so right now.

Here is what he is up to ( written by Choy himself) :

"WELL HERE IN MIAMI IHAVE MY OWN BUSSINES STUDIO BISS THAT IS
I JUST OPENED A STATE OF THE ART DIGITAL STUDIO IM JUST PUTTING MY WEB IN MARCH SO I WILL FILL YOU IN AS SOON AS IS UP . BESIDES THAT I KEEP BUSY GIGING IN SALSA BANDS TOP 40 BANDS AND STUDIO SESSIONS I ALSO DO ALOT OF THE VOCAL BACKGROUNDS IN TOWN .

AS FAR AS CHARTS FOR ALL THOSE SONGS NEVER REALLY DOCUMEMTED ANYTHING BUT THAT STUFF SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM FOR YOU . I JUST REALESED A HOUSE RECORD CALLED BURNING UNDER YOU RECORDS SO IF YOU HEAR IT THATS ME SINGING. Not technically and I prefer Roger Patterson (RIP) who was a bass genious and played in Atheist before he died about 10 years ago in a touring car accident (sounds familiar?).

Check out this old song : I Deny (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/Atheist%20-%20I%20Deny.mp3) , it beats anything Cliff ever did.

also, another album with truly incredible sound: Suffocation "Pierced From Within". god.....the lead tone is soooooooo masterful!

id have to say Suffocations bassist is very very very good. also Meshuggah's bass player is very good.

i think in general to be a good death metal band the bassist has to be good....so its i think it comes down to creativity/sound/personal preference.

what does death metal need to improve on?

*more virtuostic guitar playing. Trey Azagthoth wont be here forever and when he leaves, someone needs to pick up the reigns.

*more intellectual lyrical content. sure, the gore section is cool....but its given death metal a bad name in that when people hear the term "death metal" they immediately think of bands singing about satan and eating your dogs intestines and then masturbating into your dead grandmothers grave. we need more Morbid Angel/Nile/Kataklysm type stuff.

*like coypu said, more emotional singing. mostly its just mindless growling. we need more Lord Worms, Chief Spires, Dave Vincent, and Steve Tuckers.

cant really think of anything more as Coypu pretty much covered it.

upcoming concerts i got tickets to:

June 22: 6 Feet Under/Skinless/Sworn Enemy

August 1: NILE/HATE ETERNAL/ORIGIN/ARCH ENEMY.

that will slay all. oh yes.

anyone know where i can get some mp3's of Nile's new album? its finished but it doesnt come out till August 20 i believe. also, does anyone have any information on the next Morbid Angel album? anyone know whose singing??

Isn't Alex Webster supposed to be a bit nifty on the bass? But then I wouldn't really know. The guy from Acid Death has got some fairly funky stuff as well which sounds cool in a death metal band!

Azagthoth - check out Throne of Nails at www.throneofnails.com they're a great band who have a similar lead style to Trey's. In fact they sound quite a lot like Morbid Angel full stop but they're still a great band.

Hey greg, Death Metal mostly is about Satan, Nile there songs are mostly of Anubis (the egyption equivalent of Satan), Deicide is a blentent givin, Morbid Angel take a peak at the name a logo. ya know brother i hate to admit it but i do have a point...but off course Christian Death Metal whould be a ****ing joke, you have to have to oppition in order to keep one person from gaining to much power (look upon thy crusaids of christianity) when one group becomes to power it gets to there head, We need bands that in-advertantly advertise Satan because its a never ending power struggle, and i personaly would like to see the fall of religon period, but thats my opionon and i could be wrong...but i doubt it

Alex webster is probably the best bass player in death metal when it comes to the non-jazz styled bands, he rarely shows of but he throws in some pretty **** cool stuff in some songs that are hard to hear but if you listen carefully his greatness shows. And I saw the life Cannibal Corpse video and the whole band are amazing players (with the exception of their drummer who is tight but not amazing).

I agree on suffocations bassplayer, it takes alot of skill to play thoose songs on bass for sure.

The guy in Necrophagist have potential and Peter Lake in Theory in Practice is amazing but he sounds unfortunately alot like Yngvie Malmsteen which is a **** shame. Fredrik Thordendal is probably my favorite at the moment though, he truly have something great going on and he is probably the best since Paul Masvidal of Cynic.

Definately, the problem is as I think that most bands doesn't care much about it, they only write because the vocalist needs something to sing. There are a few good ones out here who put their soul into it but they are too few.

I think Atheist had good lyrics so check them out if you like : http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/atheist/unquestionablepresence.html#1

Alright, I agree with you to a certain extent about CC and Paul. If you put the guy from Death (which I downloaded some off your site and the guy is truly amazing!) in there, it probably would be a little better. but I still think that a part of the reason is that Cynic and Death and Atheist and Cryptopsy's songwriting is a lot more technical then CC and demands greater drumming. Thats why those guys are so good, because they "have" to be. It would be interesting to put Paul in Atheist.

What kind of drummer DO you want in your band?

Thanks for the Gorguts info. Amazon had only 2 of the albums and CDNow only had one, so thats why I didn't see it.

Cannibal Corpse get very technical at times and you could definately fit some amazing drumbeats in there, Paul does his job and he is tight and he can keep up an entire set but he doesn't do any extra stuff, I honestly don't think that Paul could come up with and play stuff like Mother Man, he just isn't that good.

If I could could choose any drummer I would definately get Steve Flynn of Atheist, he isn't the most technical in the world but in my view he is the perfect death metal drummer and he actually never used a blast beat (except in one song).

Morbid Angel's music is about individuality and breaking away from the mundane and the shackling of those who dare oppress the mind and soul. yes, a lot of that has to do with degrading christianity....with which satan is the obvious answer.

but i dont personally believe in satan, so how can i see the fall of something i dont think exists? lol

on the religion note, i said 2 very ballsy things to my parents this weekend:

i had to go to a church for a baptism for one of my cousins. my mom was yelling at me "YOU WILL STAND WHEN WE STAND AND PRAY WHEN WE PRAY!" and i said that i wouldnt and she says "oh what are you then, an athiest?" and i said "yes that is what i view myself as" she then goes ranting about not seeing any meaning behind life....bla bla and i told her my thinkings of irrelevancy in everything. she then told me "oh what so you dont care about anyone or need to feel anything?" so i said "yeah, i dont need a fairy tale, hypocritical god to use as a crutch to get me through life and make me feel like im loved". that was ballsy thing number one. next they proclaim "YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN AND YOU WILL BELIEVE IN GOD!" so i yell "No i am not, and i never will believe in god".

i dont remember the rest but thats pretty much how it went.

during the service......the priest was ranting on and on about something untill he said:

"we must feel for autistic children, and children afflicted with downs syndrome, children who are deaf and mute, for they will not open themselves up and let god love them; let the world love them"

so basically he said that we have the choice of whether we want to be retarded or not. lol. i lost every ounce of respect for priests i almost had.

errrr.... sounds very nice Azagthoth, all well beyond my playing ability tho'!

The Christianity/Satanism debate is possibly the least interesting one in the world. **** all to do with music. I quite liked the whole thing on the first Deicide (it's kinda cool to scream "Nail Him!") but now I am soooo bored of it. Especially when people say anyone who sings about Satan is a black metal band! Which is crap - Deicide, Morbid Angel, Krisiun, Akercocke (although they have had some blackish bits), Black Sabbath, Motley Crue and the Rolling Stones have all had some songs about Satan and none are black metal!

There is no real religion of Satanism: Lavey created some life theology based on Crowley - esque Doing what thou wilt but he added the Satan bit to make it more exciting for bored middle aged men who wanted to have more kinky sex. The only real reference to Satan is in The Bible, which has got to make you start wondering whether he really exists.

It's time for it to stop really. Sing about what you want - scream Satan if you want but don't go around saying that you're oppressed by Christian society, all you really mean is that mummy won't let you wear your Cradle of Filth t-shirt when you go to see your Gran!

Hey guys, here's something I found to be a little weird. Today I was reading through Revolver magazine and they had an interview with George Fisher of Cannibal Corpse. So I read it and was kinda amazed by what he said. They asked him if he was into "gore." He said no, and that he was very disturbed by gore and death. He said that he's watched the "Faces of Death" films (films showing people die in real life and gorey circumstances, never seen them myself) and they were very sick to him.

I found this odd coming from a guy that sings for one of the goriest bands out there. But he brought up good points about how people need to stop taking lyrics so seriously and just listen to the band. I was still amazed though.

i got this from Metal Update newsletter:

VITAL REMAINS
Glen Benton (Deicide) recently laid down the vocal tracks for Vital
Remains' forthcoming album 'Dechristianize' at Morrisound Recordings -
aside from Benton, the recording lineup consisted of Tony Lazaro on
guitars and David Suzuki on guitars, leads, bass and drums - in Tony's
words: "We'd just like to say eternal thanks to Glen for doing such a
****ing killer job, and to the rest of the guys in Deicide for being cool
about Glen doing the record! This record is for our fans, and the true
Metal Underground!!! Hail Satan!!!"

05-24-2002, 05:28 AM
Hey Terminal Spirit. You should start with the whole Mirrorworlds album! But one of the best songs is "Dissolving" God knows where you'll find it on the net though.

I always thought Burton had the worst voice I've ever heard! His growls are **** and as for that godawful croon he passes off as singing ... the riffs are simplistic and cliched ( I would have thought Dino's guitar playing would be a total nightmare for a man who worships Tray Azagthoth!) and the drumming is basically a computer! Raymond plays to a click and then they put it back through a computer which corrects all timing errors to the nth degree. They really should have got a drum machine!

Anyway - each to their own! Their first album wasn't too bad I suppose. Did you check out Throne of Nails Azagthoth? Mithras are another good band you might like.

i dont know....i just love Fear Factory. sure Dino's guitar parts are relatively simple, but its feeling that counts. he has so much of that. also about Rays drumming....he plays everything triggered. you may say its all fixed by a computer, but hell he pulled it off superbly live. so i dont really care lol.

Well I want someone to tab E-minor but it seems like no one is up to it but Eight is enough sounds pretty easy and repetitive so I was hoping someone could do this one atleast.

Never heard of it before. Sounds...interesting, tho.

What bands are there that do Jazz Death?

coypu
05-29-2002, 11:49 AM
Atheist - They invented it all and while Cynic are more technical Atheist always had the best songs (broke up '93).

..and the psychic saw (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/atheist%20-%20And%20The%20Psychic%20Saw.mp3)

Water (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/Atheist%20-%20Water.mp3)

Cynic - They took what atheist did but alot further and ventured into ultra technical (Atheist where only very technical) jazz fusion death and are still to this day unmatched (they broke up '94).

Veil of Maya (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/Cynic%20-%20Focus%20-%2001%20-%20Veil%20Of%20Maya.mp3)

Uroboric Forms (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/Cynic%20-%20Focus%20-%2006%20-%20Uroboric%20Forms.mp3)

Pestilence - They became jazz death after hearing Atheist and "stole" atheist bassplayer and became technical, Kelly of Atheist was not happy about this at all... (they broke up '93)

Personal Energy (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/pestilence%20-%20Personal%20Energy.mp3)

Changing Perspectives (http://galaxen.net/~coypu/musik/pestilence%20-%20Changing%20Perspectives.mp3)

Theese are the greatest, there are a few bands that are less great but still worthy but start with theese ones if you are interested.

yes jazz death metal sure is some interesting stuff.

hey ive got some news for fellow guitarists here:

Morbid Angel now endorses Line6. yes. ive looked at some very recent pictures of Trey and Erik and each had a Line6 full stack behind them. Trey also had an ancient marshall head....looked like a Plexi. donno if it was a reissue or not. and he had a huge rack too.

i had no idea there was such a thing as jazz death
jazz = abstract, intricate, complicated, strange chords
death = abstract, somewhat intricate, complicated, strange tunings

i guess it sounds reasonable.
but the two dont sound the same

Start with downloading the songs in my earlier post and listen for yourself. Jazz suffers alot from improvisation and the lack of good structure and metal is often very one dimensional so by adding more freeform layers but maintaining the non improvised base you can create well planned organized freeform music that often end up with amazing results. You'll get the idea once you hear the music,

Saw Opeth, Arch Enemy and Withering Surface last night. Withering surface were rubbish - far too happy and poppy and not forgetting generic. Arch Enemy were good, excellent drumming and guitar heroics but vocals are still a bit weak. Opeth are one of the few bands I prefer live. Vocals were spot on, sound was clear enough to hear all the harmonies. Excellent songs, well performed. The very definition of "prog - death"! Or maybe just prog metal before you start going on about them not being death metal - it was however how they started out.

I've been a bit disturbed by a tendency to put Opeth down as "newbie" death metal. I think they are far too intricate for that. In fact their current surge in popularity is a bit baffling - they're certainly not the sort of thing you'd expect kids to be getting into as a first extreme metal band. Oh well it can only be a good thing.

Well the same things are said about bands like : Cannibal Corpse & Nile, [Dimmu Borgir & Cradle of Filth - newbie black M.] and you just have to live with it, some bands just happen to appeal to people new to the genre and therefor it is newbie metal and not much more to it. And Opeth are abit like soft death metal so people who aren't into the brutal stuff can easily get into it and with the wave of Tool and similar Opeth lies perfect in time.

I don't think they are a soft death metal band though. I think they're a progressive, intricate, atmospheric metal band with some parts that verge on death metal. I would say easy listening death metal is the likes of Heartwork, Domination and World Demise.

As in Carcass - Heartwork and Morbid Angel - Domination?

Here in sweden we have a lame band called bo kasters orkester which plays something that sound like Bleak 5:21+ and Opeth is the metal version of that band and a far stretch from Carcass & Morbid Angels material. Opeth is not death metal, they are the result of melodic death metal going comercial. I have nothing against the band but compared to stuff like Depresy they just look very weak. Opeth have in my voew lost the intensity of metal and gone into something that is more dull, this can work with certain bands if the compensate with a great deal of emotion (like burzum) or are very experimental & odd but I just can't find any qualities in Opeth that makes me want to listen to them regurlarly. If this comes out harsh it was never intended so, it is just my view and not a condemnation of either the band or their fans.

Hey Coypu, offence will not be taken don't worry. Yeah I meant Cracass "Heartwork" and Morbid Angel "Domination" as examples of bands simplifying their sound for commercial gain. I think Opeth have become less commercial - man it's basically prog now! But regardless once again I couldn't agree more with your recommendation of Depresy - if anyone here hasn't heard them you really should check them out!
You might like The Belonging as well (www.thebelonging.co.uk) - their recordings are a bit rough soundwise but the potential is there.

heres something, can anyone here play ANY of trey's solos? the closest ones i can get are his slow trem picked ones like in "At One With Nothing" and i can somewhat do the "Rapture" solol. im guessing tho NOBODY can touch any of the solos on "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh". that cd....its jus....wow. its inhuman. trey is Perfect.

Nope but I play bass so I hope that I am excused.

The Trooper claimed that the MA solos wasn't that hard but he also claimed that he could play Cynic so I guess that he is full of **** and plain wrong (I still like him though).

I found Cryptopsy's none so vile in the record shop yesterday, i was very surprised and excited, they have two of the newer (new and too expensive) ones with mike but they never had any of the lord worm albums, and none so vile was second hand so it was cheap.

And i found cannibal corpses vile there too digipack with hammer smashed face live, witch i was very happy about too because it was second hand and cheap.

p.s isnt vile the 1st album with the corpse grinder?

Listen to Fredrik Thordendals solo album and compare it with Allan Holdsworth, you will see where Fredrik got his inspiration. But bands like Cynic have alot more jazz influences but Meshuggah have alot too that shows here and there, and very often in the leads.
