My route home every night passes straight through town, and tonight I looked in on Virgin to look for a few DVDs...and Virgin have a sale on, of extreme metal. I was shocked.
Okay so its not the most underground stuff around (Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Napalm Death, Carcass, Decapitated, Akercocke and a few others, from what I can remember), but they're all 7.99. As best I can remember, its by far the coolest thing Virgin have ever done.

Just remembered, you also get a free T-shirt if you buy 2 or more of those CDs...my basic attitude to the shirt was "hey, free dishrag!", and it won't fit me anyway, but I thought I'd mention it.
Also, the only band I'm not familiar with that I can remember being on sale was Decapitated. Is it worth buying any or their albums?

Decapitated is awesoem dude. get either album nihility or winds of creation. i think both are amazing.
huh...weird. I'm able to get on at work today. But I couldn't last week. Just a temporary block I guess. I'm still gonna try to limit my time though so it doesn't become a permanent block.

Hey w1ks.
Gorgoroth has more than 2 albums.
A Sorcery Written In Blood (demo...don't count on finding it)
Pentagram
Antichrist
The Last Tormentor (live 7" EP)
Under The Sign Of Hell
Destroyer...Or About How To Philosophize With The Hammer
Incipit Satan
Twilight Of The Idols-In Conspiracy With Satan
I haven't heard the new one yet, but I've heard from others that it's pretty cack. Pretty much anything pre-Incipit Satan. That album strayed a bit from their previous work and is quite different IMO. It's ok, but not very representitive of the bands other work.
And yeah I had the Baphomet avatar. Then someone copped it and I was harrassing them about it and it became a sort of inside joke. And it just sort of mutated from that point. I didn't invent it though. Do a google search for "Baphomet" and "Goat Of Mendes".

no problem, its wonderful because it saves your credit card number on there so when you log onto it all you have to do is click, "add to basket" and check out...yeah i lose alot of money this way. Metal bands are hard to find in local cd stores for anything under 15.99 so i wait until there are deals on there for a used one for like 6.99, shipping (in the US) is like $1.50 for a cd, overall ive never had a problem and i order cds every week for years now...just avoid the seller "Djananos Music", check your sellers ratings and feedback before you order or you could wait up to a month for a cd, whereas usually it takes a few days....look at what people have first class shipping avaible, and the expedia shipping is a sham...dosnent get there any faster.

They tried to get all technical on MKC and it didn't really work. Like an Everflowing Stream is probably the best Swedish death metal album ever but I rate Indecent and Obscene too.
I quite like Catemenia but I see terminal's point, it lacks that edge that makes Dissection or Lord Belial great bands.

No, The Wilderness is a song of their demo "From Which Of This Oak". It was never re-released after that. Dawn Of Flames Im refering to is the song, not the album.

Anyone heard the new Gorgasm, Masticate to Dominate? I got it yesterday, and I have to say that it will be the best brutal death metal CD of the year. With perhaps the exception of new Lykathea Aflame and The Necrophagist. That should hardly detract from it's sheer awesomeness though.

I've never noticed much of a similarity either, like Fimbul said, they both have acoustics and clean vocals. Next time i listen to them both i will listen for similarity's but i don't think there is much of a conncection, I mean alot of bands use Acoustics and Clean vocals and don't sound like neither agalloch nor Opeth.

Yeah, probably, but wouldn't that lead to the fact that the last part of the song has nothing to do with the first part anymore.
I mean, you need some kind of similarity and I figured that in the end it would get a bit repetitive, but yeah, I don't know.

Well I'm spreading the metal. I just made 2 mp3 cd-r's for people I work with. One of them is into punk and not much metal. The other listens to some metal, Metallica, Slayer and some nu-metal stuff. Both of them were interested in black and death metal though so I made them both cd's with about 120 songs on them all death and black metal.
Myself though, the last couple days I haven't really been listening to much except at work. After 5 years of trying to get my dads guitars from my mom (he died 7 years ago, she kicked me out 5 years ago, some of you have I'm sure heard me bitch about the whole situation) I finally got both of them. Dissection are Satanic Melodic Death metal. Black metal is about atmosphere, and Dissection is not about the atmosphere.
And it was not In Flames, At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Eucharist, or Dissection that founded and created Melodic Death metal. It was Carcass. The whole Gothenburg scene exists because of Heartwork. And Iron Maiden.

Carcass's Heartwork came out in 1994.
ATG released many albums before including "Red In The Sky is Ours" 1992, "Gardens of Grief" 1991 and With Fear I kiss the Burning Darkness" 1993.
Dark Tranquility first came out in 1993.
Tiamat released Sumerian City in 90, along with Astral Sleep in 91, and Hypocrisy came out in 92.
All melodic death metal, all before Heartwork.
And then of course Entombed...

Heartwork was released in 93 actually, written in 92. Listen to The Red in the Sky is Ours. It is not the Gothenburg sound. Neither Tiamat, nor Hypocrisy are Gothenburg sound. Skydancer by Dark Tranquility is, in some aspsects, namely the solos, and did influence the gothenburg scene, but not as much as Heartwork.

The whole scene I reckon comes from one riff in Iron Maiden's "Revelation" - have a listen, it's pure Gothenburg!
I don't really agree with this. Gardens of Grief came out in 91 and even then you could see the beginnings of that sound. Swedish death metal was always much, much more melodic than US death metal (you could hear the maiden influence in Unleashed!)so I guess it was inevitable that it would be taken to it's logical conclusion. In the US that would mean suffocation, Hate Eternal etc and in Sweden that would mean Soilwork and In Flames.
While I hate such fence sitting I would call Dissection blackened death metal. There is a black metal feel to the sound but they still have more in common with At The Gates than Abigor.

Yeah I agree, Melodic death is basically a combination of Iron maiden and early death, like the band. Id est death :).
But really, it doesn't really matter guys, melodic death provides us with some great bands like At the gates, In flames , dark tranquillity, arch enemy, ...
It doesn't really matter who was first. ;)

I find it funny that Mike Ammot left Carcass because of the melodic side coming into the music then he went and started Arch Enemy.

I was reading a Mithras interview yesterday and the band Thorns came up, I was wondering what would be the best album to get by them.

you know who nobody talks about in the melodic death metal thing? Necrophobic. have any of you actually heard the album Bloodhymns? dear christ... its sheer genious. i ****ing LOVE that cd. Thats death metal with a blackened, melodic feel to it.
i donno, this is how i see ****:
Death metal: Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Hate Eternal, Skinless
Black Metal: Immortal, Emperor, old Dimmu Borgir, Old Mans Child, Dark Funeral
Thrash: Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth, Overkill
Old School Death Metal: Possessed, Death (SBG/Leprosy), Slaughter Lord, Morbid Angel's early stuff, Entombed (LHP/Clandestine)
Old School Black/Thrash: Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Venom
now, my thoughts on the whole melodic thing change sometimes. Normally, when i classify a band as "melodic" they sound like At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Arch Enemy. Sometimes i call that melodic death metal, because i alternate from calling bands like Iced Earth and Jag Panzer melodic or power metal.
but whichever the case is, ATG, DT, IF, and AE are DEFINATELY melodic.

If you listen to Lunar Strain (In Flames) and then listen to Storm of the light's bane (Dissection), you will see there is a huge difference between the two. To the person who said that Dissection doesn't put out an atmosphere, then you obviously have not heard Storm of the light's bane (arguably their best album). Dissection gives you the black metal atmosphere that you get from listening to a black metal album, Dissection is definitely black metal.

Thorns only has one album even though they have been around along time, they only have one album because of Snorre serving jailtime due to being an accessory in Varg's murder of Euronymous. Either way, the full length album they have is self titled "Thorns." They have demos and other things like that from before Snorre's stint in prison, also they have a split with emperor.

Also, today I got the Metal zone pedal from Boss for a present.
I was a bit disappointed because I thought it would have been heavier. Maybe it's broke, because it's second handed.

Go with the DOD Death Metal Distortion pedal. The Metal Zone may work for Metallica, but not much heavier, on it's own.

hmmm Turn Loose the Swans, Serenades, Gothic, Spirit the Earth Aflame, Battle Magic, New Dark Age etc all disagree. All recorded using Mashall Valvestate and Boss Metal Zone. It's what you do with it. Unsilence had a death metal sound and always used Metal Zones. The River don't have a death metal sound so only use a Metal Zone for the bass!

The Metal Zone is indeed pretty descent if you doodle around with it.. But for bass, Jon? Never tried that. For bass distortion I use the Ibanez PD7, it gets the job done.

It sounds OK. The bass player has got a "Big Muff" pedal now which not only sounds better but is shiny and makes for lots of poor jokes.

A Metal Zone in combination with a good tube amp can sound good, but the pedal by itself doesn't impress me in the slightest.

dont use pedals, people cant seem to grasp this. a natural tone from the amp and the right kind of humbucker should be all you need, much cleaner distored sound than a distorted mess that pedals cause, to much **** feedback and clutter, does no justice to the sustain either.
