I've only heard Versus The World and Once Sent From The Golden Hall.....so I can't really make a best album case.
I will say this though.....both are top class :thumb:
But I expect the Amon Amarth dude will have his say soon enough.

any amon amarth cd. they're all really good. versus the world is a bit different from the rest due to a change in recording studios and the pace is slower than the previous, but it's one of their heaviest cds. the crusher has some really punishing songs, a few that come to mind are the sound of eight hooves and releasing of surtur's fire. the avenger is filled with adrenaline pumping, pride inducing songs, such as the last with pagan blood, god his son and holy whore, and metalwrath. once sent from the golden halls is filled with amon amarth classics, such as victorious march and friends of the suncross. my advice? get 'em all!

Well, Death Metal is a pretty broad spec. For leads, the Dimarzio X2N sounds spectacular. The Chopper and Blaze are both great for rhythm. But remember, it's the pedal that makes the DM tone, and not the pick-ups. They merely help. That pedal being the DOD death metal distortion pedal. The Boss Metal Zone 2 also suffices.

Has anybody here ever heard a song called "Where Cold Winds Blow"? It doesn't have the best quality and it's about 7-8 minutes long. There's no decipherable words for the most part. Just a lot of "AAAHHHH!!" I downloaded it a while ago and I don't know what band it's by and would like to know so I can get some more by this band. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, I liked the bit about free delivery, and its got a good selection...I dunno, I just prefer going into a store and actually buying an album, rather than ordering it. Always just seemed more kind of "real" to me, however strange that sounds..
Whatever, now I've got £200 of cheap CDs to buy, so thanks.

Id like to enquire into the Baphomet horde...
What bands get you in?
Is it all extreme metal or just Black metal?
Jondur,Toozey,Im looking in your direction...
My avatar was the original "Baphomet Horde" avatar. When I used it, it was not used as a reference to music. Mine isn't even the original Baphomet. The avatar I used is a newer version of Baphomet. It is a symbol. I'm attaching a pic of the deity known as Baphomet. The Baphomet has it's origins far before any of the music we listen to now ever came about. It's true origins are disputed. It wasn't known in Western demonology until the 14th centure when the Knights Templar were accused of worshipping Baphomet. The history of Baphomet is entirely too huge to really give a complete picture in just this post. If you're really interested, there are some good sites out there you can find. Look for keywords such as "Baphomet" (should be obvious), "Goat Of Mendes", "Knights Templar". The most common association today, is (unfortunatly) the symbol in my avatar and the so called "Church Of Satan". Anton LeVay perverted Satanism. He perverted the Baphomet into what most people see it as today. Don't get me started on Anton LeVay. He was a fool. But he is, unfortunatly, what the vast majority of people see as the founder of the "Church Of Satan". Like I said. If you really want to know about Bahpomet, do your homework.
cd's I got for xmas:
Kalmah - Swampsong
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical - Euphoric Misanthropia (the real cd! Not just mp3's anymore!)
Godsmack - Faceless
Dream Theater - Train Of Thought
NP: Behemoth - Decade Of Therion
edit: uh...what happened to my avatar!? I'll have to reload it. Sometime when MX is a bit faster. And I don't know why the file didn't attach.

I'm not a drummer or anything, so I don't know how actually talented any particular drummer is (Ijust know what I like and what I don't), but Cynic in general were just a really talented and technical band (the drummer was Sean Reinert). www.cynicalsphere.com has a good little history of the band, along with some mp3s to check out.

I was reading the company history section of the site and rather liked this bit;
"As there was no venture capital involved, the operation was fairly modest in its beginnings. Mr. Kurtagic lived in a cave, and records were kept in encrypted cuneiform on tree leaves hidden inside snake pits."

Faust leaves Dissection:
After a meeting with Jon in Stockholm, Sweden, drummer Bård "Faust" Eithun has explained that he has been tense about what impression the whole deal with Dissection would do to him in practice and that he has come to the conclusion that he can't stand behind and live up to the demands of Dissection's Satanic concept, with the inevitable result that he has to leave the band. A decision Faust and Jon made in mutual agreement after discussing the problem.
Jon gives his statement: "There are only two alternatives for us; doing Dissection wholeheartedly and with complete devotion, or not at all."
Faust further explains the problem of him not being able to stand behind the band's satanic ideology and that it has no practical meaning in his life.
"My relation to Dissection is simply musical", Faust declares. "The problem occurs when the band takes form more as a cult where there are rules for behavious and strict codes." Faust also states that he initially didn't realize how strong the satanic influence on Dissection actually was.
Jon explains that he has tried to be as clear as possible when emphasizing the concept of Dissection to Faust. "Faust should definitely have realized from the start what we were about. Dissection is a satanic band period."
"I don't ask from anyone to be anything else than himself", Jon continues, "but if a member of the band isn't capable of living up to the ideology and giving the band his full and wholehearted dedication, then I see no other option than us going separate ways, really. I can only show Faust my appreciation for being open and honest about it at an early stage, because now we can go on and look for someone who is right for the band before we record our forthcoming album. I further wish Faust the best of luck for the future."
Consequently, Dissection is at the moment without a permanent drummer. Jon concludes: "We are right now looking for someone who is just right for the band, musically and ideologically."

Has anyone here heard of/heard Vinterriket? From what I've heard I'm enjoying them a lot, as I love dark ambient stuff, gives me the same atmospheric mood as a lot of older black metal. Another thing I've been listening to that is very atmospheric, and quite excellent, is Ulver's "Kveldssanger" album.
Now, as neither of those things are extreme metal really, I should get on topic, and proclaim my enjoyment of the latest Necrophagia album, "The Divine Art of Torture". It's the first with Frediablo on guitar, and I'm a big fan of most of his work. I'm also looking forward to the next Necrophagia album, "Goblins Be Thine", which is coming out soonish.

I'm just teasing ya mate. Of course I can't know exactly how they recorded it and so forth but I really belive that is a very well produced album. Compare it to Transylvanian Hunger (CD not the ****ty mp3). That's recorded with a 4-track mixer. You can really hear it's cold, raw and haunting sound while on Nattens Madrigal it's this high-pitched beautiful raw sound. Perhaps the cd and mp3 versions vary a bit on that matter. But I'm still with the latter theory -- well produced rather than recorded in the middle of the night in a forest in Norway. :p

Yes, Nattens Madrigal :p isn't the worst sound quality out there. I mean nothing can really compare to the n3cron3ss of a 4-track mixer, but the cold, chilling sound on transylvanian hunger creates somewhat of an atmosphere that i am fond off. Sumerian was spoken by the Sumerians, the people of Sumer, makes sense eh? Sumer was one of the largest and earliest river culture. Based around Tigris and Eufrat (That is modern Iraq). The culture reigned from pre-historical time somewhere around 2.000BC. First settlers are belived to date back to 5.900BC. Their language was of course Sumerian. The Sumeran culture was also "well" developed, writing, organised religion etc, they even had artificial watering! If you really want to know more lemme know. This isn't the real thread to discuss history. :)
Oh yeah, Per Adua you're quite correct about Transilvanian Hunger. The atmosphere on that album is one of the best (or shall I say worst?) I know of. It's one of my personal favorites as well. You never could guess THAT, could you?

ah yes... finally a chance to spill my geekoid wealth of uselesss Morbid Angel trivia knowledge. haha
first off, Formulas is the death metal record. like... the universe bows before the altar of this cd. It is simply beyond sane humanity.
Secondly, yes, it is Sumerian. The sumerian connection with Morbid Angel is quite involved, but ill try to sum it up best i can.
Alright, it all begins with a little author named HP Lovecraft who wrote horror/dream/fantasy tales about a mystical pantheon of gods. the head of this was Cthulhu, a name which comes directly from Sumerian. In fact, much of Lovecrafts deity stuff is taken as a direct influence from Sumerian. Now, HP Lovecraft invented the Necronomicon, which was written by the mad arab Abdul Al-hazred. combining Al-hazred being arab and the Necronomicon being the wealthiest vat of ancient demonology and witchcraft, everything points to Sumer because Sumer was the most ancient civilization that was really worth a ****.
Morbid Angel, along with many other early metal bands, focused songs around Lovecrafts inventions... whether it be his certain gods or actual story lines. Trey read the Necronomicon much in his youth, and branched into the Lovecraft part of it and the actual Sumerian part of it.
so formulas is pretty much based around stuff like that....in terms of foreign language. dont even get started on the stuff behind that albums "concept" because it will take days to adequately explain.
in short:
Formulas = Cutha hymns revolving around Sumerian/Lovecraftian mythology + the concept of the limitless potential/ability of the individual and that the individual is that persons own god.
Formulas is the ****. I've melted away into the delirium of sleeping pills and Tylenol PM, because it aids in sleep and gives me crazy intense dreams... but yeah, i hope that explained your question a bit.
Morbid Angel is not for the feeble-minded....

Probot sounds awesome, I'm looking forward to hearing it:)
Ok, this is my first foray into the death-metal thread, and I'm a little nervous. I'm wanting to get into some death-metal, but the heaviest thing I've ever heard is the new Dream Theater album:upset:I'm thinking of getting into Opeth, because I love ****ation. What should I listen to, being somewhat new to this mysterious genre?

Kaden, try some melodic death with At the Gates, Children of Bodom, and In Flames.
As for albums of those bands you should get...
At the gates-Slaughter of the soul
Children of Bodom-Follow the Reaper
In Flames-Lunar Strain (but they are all good except reroute to remain)
That should hold you over for awhile. :thumb:

I can imagine each track will be very different. Dave wrote each track with a singer in mind so I imagine the Eric Wagner track will be very different than the Cronos track.
I thought red War was ace (minus the irritating spoken word bit) but was mainly excited because if that is what the irritating, Korn-obssessed Max can come up with imagine what Tom G Warrior will do!!

Go to http://www.southernlord.com/lord1.htm click on probot and you can hear samples from the tracks featuring Cronos, Eric Wagner, Wino and Lee Dorrian. Really this stuff is soooooo good! It helps if you're into doom as the Lee Dorrian track is amazing - the best thing he's done since Forests..
The Cronos track kicks major derriere too!
I'm going to stop going on about Probot now... honest!

Either you can't count or you don't rate one of those bands..... Personally I don't rate two and one only released one good album and a 7".
ps Turn Loose the Swans is a classic album. I also love Like Gods of the Sun. But by far the best thing they ever did is Thrash of Naked Limbs.
Did my first gig with The River last night. Twas pretty good in spite of a naff drum kit that moved across the stage. When will people learn to bring carpet?!! But we got a good response and played ok - only a few mistakes which can be ironed out with a few more gigs. Someone taped it so if it's good enough quality we might put it out as a split live bootleg with the other band, Cambian Dawn.
