Worlds beyond the Veil? No I don't. It's on my wanted list though. I'm kind of on a buying hold because we had some things come up so I'm really short on cash. And the holidays are coming up so I don't want to buy too much because cd's usually make up the majority of what I get for xmas.

heads up for all you guys...
... Morbid Angel is in the next issue of metal maniacs. got special info about that at the fest last weekend. heheh
I'm thinking about getting the new Six Feet Under album... is it worth it?
LegionsofMarduk
11-18-2003, 08:53 PM
Sure. Pick up Linkin Park's new one while you're at it.
I haven't heard anything fron Six Feet Under in a while, but if they're the same as they used to be I wouldn't waste the money. Lots of other albums out there that would be far better buys. Six Feet Under is to death metal what Blink 182 is to punk rock.
On a side note, anyone heard Ludicra? It's Ross Sewage's (of Impaled) side project. I read an interview with him and he mentioned them. Not too bad. Sort of melodic black metal. Check 'em out at mp3.com/ludicra (http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/305/ludicra.html)

**** straight Jim, that's exactly how SFU compare to DM. It's absolutely pathetic in my honest opinion.
I think some bands that could cover in the DM category, with still being somewhat popular could follow under:
Morbid Angel
Behemoth
Vehemence
I think, if he looks into those, there could be a pretty good chance he may turn out to like some MDM and DM. Though I am much like yourself, I enjoy BM, with dominance in the Melodic side.

Yeah but that's a pile of bollocks. Mithras are ace and I've been banging on about them for ages but that's the kind of hype that just pisses people off. The new album is brilliant - brutal but beautiful, spaced out but in your face, technical but catchy. In short an amazing album. But that review was a joke.
Tooz - you can get it for £6 from www.goldenlakeprods.co.uk who are totally trustworthy and good guys.
And yes - SFU are a joke. A disgrace to metal let alone death metal.

*waves* hey death head right here! out of all the death metal bands I listen to I must say these are favorite
Morbid Angel (visions from the dark side was one hell of a great song)
cryptopsy
NILE
six feet under
napalm death
thought I would put in the top 5 dont wont to go on and on. I hate where I live though I have to order most of my cd's and it gets annoying I had to order none so vile and blasphemy made flesh by Cryptopsy and it took over 2 weeks for those to get in. as of right now I would have to say I listen to six feet under and NILE more than any of them though. I love Nile because first song I herd was smashing the antiu and I usualley expect some slow part befor a song starts but when that song kicks in its as heavey as any musick will ever get and I just kinda stood there and smiled with glee at the sound, another reason nile is good is because although I am a bass player nile is one of the only bands I can sit down and listen to for the drums and nothing else (although everyone is good) but the drummer is straight out amazing. and six feet under are just gods of death metal anyways they are nothing short of great favorite song by them would be hacked to pieces and I thought the cover they did of war machine sounded really good as well

Don't worry. Get some Lykathea Aflame, Immolation, Suffocation, Entomed, Aborted and such in you and the Six Feet Under phase will go away. That's all we can hope for. And seeing as you're in the US, there are some really good distibution centers here in the states that have much better shipping times than 2 weeks.

Cracking stuff.
Terminal: I agree. RC are washed up, Extol are ok but Thus Defiled are hugely underrated. Even here in the UK.
DMfan: Not a bad list - have a look through some of this thread you'll find a lot of good suggestions.
Azagthoth: Not only is it a musical shame that Immortal broke up but I will miss laughing at them, their photos and their hilarious live shows. Did you see the photoshop competition with all the photoshopped photos of Immortal as the Brady Bunch etc? Great stuff.

Lately I've been listening (between Dream Theater, The Black Mages and Symphony X) to In Their Darkened Shrines by Nile. I must say, it's a lot better on it's 20th listen than on the first. Still not a patch on Suffocation or Morbid Angel, though. :p

i still dont understand why theyre going to close the thread. but whatever.
In Their Darkened Shrines is a good disc... but i dont think it lays a hand on Black Seeds of Vengeance. ITDS is too... polished and mechanic. the 'instruments' that arent standard band ones were done by keyboard and computer, whereas on BSOV they were all done live using the real instrument that was intended. it gives the whole record a much more "living" feel you could say.
i was mucho pleased when they played Sarcophogus (sp?) last weekend at the fest.... that song is uber \m/

I don't think there's much here in Kalamazoo, but there are a couple places about an hour north of here in Grand Rapids.
The Intersection (http://www.section.com)
The Orbit Room (http://www.orbitroom.com)
Both of those are in Grand Rapids. The Intersection was where I saw Cradle of Filth, Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage. Nice place. Holds a few hundred. I've never been to the Orbit room, but I know they've had some metal shows there.
There is one place here in Kalamazoo that has a lot of shows called The Club Soda (http://www.theclubsoda.com/) . It's been a long time since I've been there, but it used to be pretty decent. I think you should be able to get booking info off all of those sites. If you get booked at any of them, let me know.

I once bought a CD by a band called Brutal Juice (ha ha) it was called "Mutilation makes identification difficult" and was mildly amusing. But that was one of the only times I bought a full price CD off a band I'd never heard of.
Demos is different though - I buy loads of demos whether I've heard of them or not. I always figure that if it's less than a fiver I can take the risk. But as Lefty pointed out I'm not a student so can afford to do that!

There aren't any really hard lines between the two. The best thing is to listen to a bunch of bands from both genre's and make your own distinctions. I guess very generally speaking, death metal is lower growls, better production, blast beat drums. Black metal is typically higher pitched screams, tremelo picking, Poor production, a bit more atmospheric with the use of keyboards and synthesizers. If it sounds more like Carcass than Bathory, it's death metal. If it sounds more like Bathory than Carcass then it's black metal.

ok let an expert take over here... haha
Death metal: there are generally two types of death metal: the satanic/religious/occult kind, and then you have the gore kind. That is lyrically speaking. then, musically, youve got Floridian death metal and New York Death Metal. Typically, Floridian DM takes the satanic side, whereas NYDM takes the gore side. This is not always the case, but its what happens more often. Musically speaking, FLDM is very fast and racey with huge musicianship, massive solos, and tons of blast beats. NYDM is very HEAVY and often contains pit breaks that makes the crowd mosh like theyre at a hatebreed concert. Vocally, death metal for both kinds is the low, guttoral growl with the occasionally midranger higher up stuff.
"Florida" style DM:
Morbid Angel
Deicide
Krisiun
Nile
Hate Eternal
"gore" NYDM:
Cannibal Corpse
Skinless
Suffocation
Exhumed
Dying Fetus
Now, black metal is pretty much music in evil form. its more... grim and dark, although somewhat similiar to Florida death metal and other satanic bands, like Morbid Angel. Black metal is usually characterized by higher pitch shrieking evil demon voices, very fast and racey music with a haunting, evil melody, and sometimes keyboards. Bands usually sing about demon stuff, or crazy winter land stuff. Corpsepaint is also a big part of black metal, to accentuate the evil grimness.
Key bands:
IMMORTAL - imo the king of all that is frozen.
Emperor
Old Mans Child
Mayhem
Zyklon
Dark Funeral
Darkthrone
Tangy zizzle

Good news on Lykathea Aflame from someone in touch with the band: I had mentioned the track Terminal had heard (which he described as a mix of CoF and Opeth)
"The track that your mate probably heard is the re-mixed "Land Where Sympathy Is Air" that was on the Obscene Extreme Festival comp from last year (2002). They (possibly the Obscene label guys) took the original track from the "Elvenefris" album and replaced the keyboard parts with the cheesy symphonic keyboards and it sounded terrible indeed.
That track does not represent anything new from them and I would hold-up before jumping the gun about the new stuff. "
I hope this is the case because it would be a real shame if they turned crap
Oh and btw they're now known as Lykathe (there's an acute accent over the 'e' but I can't do that on this keyboard!)

Actually, the track I have is a remake of To Give. And I surely hope that the new album sounds like that. They were supposed to go into the studio in "fall 2003", so hopefully some new tracks will surface soon.

Yes, people, including myself have read every post in this thread. Now don't waste our ****ing last 95 posts!
And so this one isn't wasted, has anyone ever heard anything by Thorr's Hammer? Not Thor's Hammer, side project of Capricornus, but a doom/sludge band from the U$A. The band contained members of Sunn 0))) and Burning Witch. As well as the single best female vocalist I've ever heard in my life. She was a real looker too. ;) I think there's a track called Norge, which can be downloaded at the Southern Lord website. Great music, and vocals which make Angela Gossow's breasts deflate in terror.

Why close it, it's still going strong? You want it to be a part of Mx History then let it stand and continue to grow. As you can see only Metalheads post in here, so why does it needed to be deleted? It's a place to conregate and talk about Metal without having 'others' that don't really know metal interfer

Ive noticed with Dark Tranquility that with his voice, and on his longer growls he tends to sound very much like some of the Melodic Black Metal vocals. Interesting enough, Ive heard that he uses Peanut Butter before singing, any solidity to this?

yeah, i see don anderson in the sculptured line-up but i only see a J. Anderson in agalloch.
Yes I know, I contacted Andreas about that... Though Im 100% sure Don Anderson is in Agalloch
Key bands:
IMMORTAL - imo the king of all that is frozen.
Emperor
Old Mans Child
Mayhem
Zyklon
Dark Funeral
Darkthrone
I think there are several that you have missed out on, that are still key... And I wouldn't put Dark Funeral in the lineup with Emperor and Mayhem.
Bands that I think are some of the most key bands in the genre:
Naglfar
They are the refined melodramatic band that I think has helped rise BM to a new state from what it was. Though they've been out forever, it's alway safe to say they are the backend.
Dissection
Melodic Black, Melodic Death... eh they can be counted as both (Ya know?), but they were probably the for-fathers of the entire genre with Mayhem and Emporer alongside.
Enslaved
Again they've been around forever, and have really added a public face to BM in general.

I'd call them melodic deat metal. I think their best album would be Politics of Ecstasy. Songs I would recommend:
Lost
Enemies of Reality
Heart Collector
Dead Heart in a Dead World.

Both Zyklon albums are pretty good. World Ov Worms is a bit more black metalish. Aeon has a lot less black metal and is more straight forward death metal. I guess for songs I'd say check out
From World Ov Worms:
Hammer Revelation
Chaos Deathcult
Worm World
From Aeon:
Psyklon Aeon
No Name Above The Names
Specimen Eruption
I put Mithras' album World Beyond The Veil on my want list, but I highly doubt I'll get it for xmas. I've only found a couple of distributor's that have it here in the states. The Seven Tongues of God
Pessimist or the Optimist
Hate Eternal:
Praise of The Almighty
King of All Kings
The Obscure Terror
Catacombs

im not all that familiar with Zyklon... in terms of song names... but those lists will get you started on Nevermore and Hate Eternal.

Oi! keep it nice in here. Flaming is fine for the noobs and the "Wow this is big" dickheads but if you disagree with a regular just try and keep it nice.
I would say Enslaved have had an influence on all the viking metal types. Dissection have made an impact with newer bands but aren't really 'true' black metal anyway - half the time they have more in common with At The Gates than Abigor. I don't think I've ever heard anyone cite Naglfar as an influence.

dunno if it's been mentioned or anything, or if it's obvious but I recently stumbled across the top selling death artists and found it interesting......
Heres the list of the all time biggest selling death artists.
CANNIBAL CORPSE: 558,929
DEICIDE: 481,131
MORBID ANGEL: 445,147
SIX FEET UNDER: 370,660
OBITUARY: 368,616
DEATH: 368,184
NAPALM DEATH: 367,654
CARCASS: 220,734
ENTOMBED: 198,764
Plus! the top selling albums.
MORBID ANGEL – "Covenant" (1993): 127,154
DEICIDE – "Deicide" (1990): 110,719
DEICIDE – "Legion" (1992): 103,544
OBITUARY – "The End Complete" (1992): 103,378
CANNIBAL CORPSE – "The Bleeding" (1994): 98,319
The S/T Deicide album is supposed to be the biggest selling in history, but apparently they only started couting numbers in 1991.

Red Harvest... I heard one song of thiers, "A.E.P.". If that is thier "sound", I would put them under industrialized dark ambient.

I assume you mean Nazi Occult Metal. I'm not sure what "noise" you're referring to. They production isn't that great, but it's not horrible. I've definately heard worse demos.
And I'm not sure about this whole deleting posts thing. I'll go through and delete any useless posts I might have made, but deleting my posts for no reasons would kinda be pointless, considering that the thread is supposed to be a resource for people to learn about Death Metal.

Amazingly I found that I had made some posts that weren't informative, witty and erudite. So I deleted those.
And on the production front - sometimes a rawer production can help. Some black metal just wouldn't sound right with a warm, bright production. Take "De Mysteriis" for example - it ain't a good production by todays standards but the drums sound like cannons (Hellhammer before the triggers - sounds much better), and the frosty, biting guitar tone with Attilla's sepulchural moans.... FOG!!!
I saw The Crown at Wacken - great performance. Never really bothered to buy any albums although I've got quite a few tracks of various compilations/tapes etc. Which is best?

On Napalm Death - Scum the riff is the same as a Carcass song, I know Bill Steer was in Napalm Death but I didn't think he recorded the song "Scum".

One of us four will be the creator, hopefully. Or maybe Coypu will come back from the grave to create it. He'd be most worthy of it.
And I personally would never want to see Carcass back together again. It just wouldn't be the same. They accomplished more for the death metal than, debatably, any other band. A re-union, with a new album, would add nothing new, and would be a disgrace compared to their glorious past.
If I could have any band re-united, it would, without a doubt, be Miasma. One incredible full-length album was just not enough.

Congratulations on arguing with the first post of a 5000 post thread!!
Went to the X-Mass fest thingy in London last night. There were loads of bands on but I only got there at 7pm as I'd had a band rehearsal. Well I saw Nile, Destruction and Deicide.
Nile were first up and again failed to touch me. They play well - they have decent stage presence (in spite of Jon Vesano's slightly arena rock-esque "Let me hear you make some noise!" stage banter) and had an OK sound but unlike on CD it just didn't do it for me live. This is the fifth time I've seen them now. The first time was a revelation, the second was a great gig and from then on I just couldn't connect with them live.
The Butcher strikes back! Devastating thrash attack! Hail to those who obey and believe in DESTRUCTION! And the Schmier roadshow was a non-stop party. Thrash ubergod Schmier was the consummate frontman, all bulletbelts and spikes, while belting out bile and spite in the way it was supposed to be. Highlights were of course Thrash to Kill and The Butcher Strikes Back. Easily band of the night - thrash is just great party music and Destruction are still producing great music!
Well, I've waited 10 years to see Deicide. They always used to do just one show in London, which was - until now- too far away so it's been a long time. I guess it was always doomed to disappint when the expectation and anticipation are so high. They WERE great, Benton was drunk as a skunk as always, the set was full of classics like Dead by Dawn, Lunatic of Gods Creation, Deicide, Sacrificial Suicide etc but wasn't quite the religious experience that I had hoped for. AND they didn't play Carnage in the temple of the damned.

I've actually heard both good and bad things about Nile live. Mostly bad, but a friend of mine who saw them thought they were incredible when he heard them. Once at least. He also claimed that Carl Sanders was a really great guy.
And since this is probably gonna be my last post in this greatest of threads, let me just say that, were it not for this thread, I would have saved a hell of a lot of money on CDs. :D

Ive seen nile twice, the first time they were pretty awful, but the second time they were beyond amazing. I think nile is one of those bands that really needs a good sound guy to sound good to be honest. Like the first plae i saw em at, the sound guy did not know how to handle extremely low tuned guitars, and it made everything sound like mud. The second time, the sound guy knew exactly what he was doing and it sounded great.
Thats my theory, they could however just be one of those hit or miss bands. /shrugs
