I find it really difficult to get into the cryptosy/cannibal corpse straight out death metal style. I'm not sure I want to get into it either, I prefer to stick with the melodic side. Has a lot more interesting aspects... but that's just me.

Yep - walk straight and make sense!

I'm going to stop this drunken posting (note: I'm drunk so this is a lie!) but some serious points:

Gregorio - on the brutal side check out Vomitory, Psycroptic, Decrepit Birth, Unleashed, Grave, Dismember, Demigod, Extreme Noise Terror, Gorerotted, Brutal Insanity, Lykthea Aflame, Necrophagist. For more melodic stuff try Eucharist, Ominous, Obsidian

Everyone stop knocking Cannibal Corpse - it ain't rocket science but they've done some craking songs eg Stripped, Raped, Strangled, Staring through the eyes of the dead, Skull full of Maggots etc.

I'd like to see Hate Eternal live, but I'm not so keen on Dying Fetus. I'm looking forward to Morbid Angel coming over too, and Testament, whenever they come over.
Also, I've yet to catch Vader live and I need to sort that out as soon as possible.

Vortigon
10-26-2003, 01:39 PM
I had that same problem with a Slayer gig, so I just didn't go to school. It may have been a bit irresponsible, but it was a good show, so I wasn't that bothered.

Anyway, today I've checked out 3 bands I've been hearing good things about all over the place, including here. They were Misery Index, Dew Scented, and Vital Remains. Misery Index are pretty good in my opinion, some nice stuff going on there, although I preferred Dew Scented slightly, although their vocals were slightly inferior. And as for Vital Remains, that is some pretty intense stuff, although I was surprised at Glen's vocals, as they seemed a lot less rhythmic than they usually do in Deicide. So I'm going to have to put aside my preconceptions and give it a decent listen.
So overall, I'm impressed, and these bands are good.

Up north? doesn't seem to be much going on in Newcastle really (My girlfriend is at Uni there so I keep an eye out for stuff there) - Bradford and Leeds has a few decent gigs coming up check out www.shipley.ac.uk/north - the Black Winter Day Fest with Cancer, Liquified Skeleton, The Enchanted etc looks good

I hope that Deicide tour isn't cancelled - I was looking forward to that - it's been ages since they've been to the UK.

ps I've been drumming for about 11 years.

They have a website at www.akercocke.com but beware it will probably have a high nudity quotient so may not be appropriate if you're at work/school

They've done three albums now: Rape of the Bastard Nazerene, Goat of Mendes and Choronzon. Although they are most famous for wearing suits live they really are excellent. As well as being brutal blasting satanic death they have a very sinister, almost slinky sound with occasional keyboards, samples and clean vox.

great live too.

dude the guitar was an Ibanez RG470 in new penny color. it was my first real guitar i ever got, back in 8th grade. im pretty bummed about it. Im listening to Bethledeign now, and everythings is ok with the world haha.

anyway...

The new Morbid Angel. lets hear some thoughts.

I'm not sure what to think. Its a great record, i love Enshrined By Grace and Cleansed in Pestilence (Blade of Elohim) but... theres some things im not too kosher with. For one, Trey's getting a little too weird and melodic for a death metal band. Theres too much out there stuff... and its kinda seeming Morbid Angel is loosing their brutality a bit, although im very happy to see the return of blast beats. Also, not enough solos. Maybe 8 or 9 on the whole disc, combined with only 8 real songs. i want more. hah.

Tucker doesnt know how to use Sumerian either, and Absu only appears in one song and its used quite oddly as opposed to previous times.

its a good disc. i enjoy listening to it, but i know Morbid Angel can do better.

id also like to add Abyssous is one ****ing badass instrumental.

You play drums?

Leicester must be a least two and a half hours drive so too far!

Well went to gig last night and saw:

Inhume - oh the amusement of having inhume and exhumed on the same bill! Good stuff - alot more 'proper' grindcore than most (Terminal: Do you know of this band - they sound right up your street), lots of blasts and punkish moments. Most impressed actually but...

Exhumed - blew them away. It was they're first time in the UK and they were obviously psyched up. While they have done away with the stage antics of their early days they still put on a great show. It was also the guitarists birthday so he got ceremonially covered in silly string and then dumped into the crowd.

Cephalic carnage - were breathtaking. Quite how anyone can be so precise while running around the stage, jumping and headbanging is beyond me. Highlight was definitely "Black Metal Sabbath" complete with black metal corpsepainted masks! Hyperblasting mayhem!!!

Unfortunately a ridiculous public transport system meant that I had to miss Akercocke to go and get umpteen buses as the tube wasn't running! A Shame but after three great bands I can't really complain. And I managed not to get back and drunkenly post on here!

I just (finally) heard the whole of Gorelord's "Zombie Suicide Part 666" album, and it's quite excellent I think. It has more atmosphere than the first album (I don't know if anyone has heard it), and some crushing riffs. Check it out if you wish, I recommend the song "Screams Choked To Silence).

Also. I have been listening to "Dreams Of The Carrion Kind" by Disincarnate, which (for those who don't know) is James Murphy's death metal band in which he writes all the material (as opposed to being the death metal world's session musician of choice). And it is pretty great.

probably other bands I'm not thinking of. Yeah. WI's metal scene is the suck, it seems.

Oh, yeah, dude that posted 7 Angels on the first page, a couple of the ex-members formed a new band, Misery Signals. Metalcore at its best.

He's sponsored by Axis Pedals, and I think Pete is too, or something like that. Like, if you look at the Choleric website (the dude's band), you'll see on the links page that they have Morbid Angel listed. The links page is basically the bands friends and stuff.

He somehow knows a lot of famous people... it's crazy.

What is so cool about Death Metal? there is nothing amousing or significant about it. It is just music for/by people who can't take some of the things that happen to them in life. GET OVER IT!!!!!!! Plus there is no reason for you to dye your hair/spike it/cut it different/wear safety pins/cut yourself/ or rebel against anything.

If I ever saw someone with spiked hair, safety pins in any part of their body, wearing make-up, hanging out at hot topic, who claimed to like Death Metal, I would smash their face in with a hammer. I would do like-wise to you if I ever met you, just for being as ignorant as you are.

ignorant to what? the fact that your actually more of a retard then he gives you credit for? death-metal sucks, the closest i could ever come to that is the song "nerdy" by poison the well, awesome song IMO, they try and act real complicated with these dumbass names and try to make more out of life then it really is, they try and take the smallest problem writing a whole song about it, about "the pain" of this and that when if they just got that dick outta their ***, wore some nice clothes and acted somewhat mature( in my experience most death heads still are extremely imature and read f-ed up commics where these little people kill each other and more f-ed up ****) then they could be a contributing member to society and have more then 5 friends,( that last one yall can probablly relate to the most)

your arguments could apply to any genre of music. If you think that most death metal is written about depression or life problems then you obviously haven't listened to any of it. Most of the death heads I know (including myself), have many friends, are very social, and have the most diverse musical tastes. You obviously don't, so crawl back into you hole where you are your own hero and go impress all of your "friends" over how you stirred **** up on a internet message board.

WTF is "The Pain"?Since when has death metal followed a common ideaology?Ever thought that your "nice clothes" could induce serious distaste in some people? What´s so bad about reading comics?Comics are one of the oldest forms of art, after all.

Death (Scream Bloody Gore)
At The Gates (With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness)
Sepultura (Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia)
My Dying Bride (As the Flower Withers)
Cryptopsy (None So Vile)

Burzum (Det Som En Gang Var)
Mayhem (Mediolanum Capta Est...good live album)

one week till the New Jersey Metal and Hardcore Festival. Whose going here??

ILL FINALLY SEE MORBID ANGEL!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH

to the last 2 dudes who posted Morbid Angel stuff:

I have the new CD. its got its high points. its an ok album... pretty close to Gateways id say. nothing amazing in my opinion, but a good album.

also... Tremorchrist: scratch Domination from there. Thats by far their worst album ever. If you must own one Morbid Angel album, it is far and away Formulas Fatal To the Flesh. NOTHING that this, or any other band, will ever or could ever do will top this. Without any second guessing, it is the most solid, complete, original, and purely mind-blowing death metal opus to ever have been recorded. its simply amazing.

if not that album, then either Blessed Are The Sick or Altars Of Madness seeing as how the chap already has Covenant.

anyone with comments/questions regarding Morbid Angel, look no further. I am the truth.

Six Feet Under and Mortician, in my opinion, are the 2 most retarded death metal bands in existence. Six Feet Under is cool for a song or 3, but in the end they all sound exactly the same. Only thing going for them is the fact that they have Chris Barnes.

Mortician... yuck. 30 second drum machine blast beat = song = not cool.

I'm alot into oldschool death, in fact I would say oldschool death (especially Death and Morbid f0cking Angel) and pre-death thrash are my favorite genres, but somehow I can't deal with death metal like Cannibal Corpse or Nile. They have some great songs, but the vocals sound like a ****ing joke when you can't understand a single thing!

To Dream Of Ur

Nile are a death metal powerhouse.

Its my birthday Mother****ers! And I am extremely hungover! Went watching Cancer/Mithras/Detrimentum/Detonation last night and got totally blitzed!

Detonation were very much Dark Tranquility/At The Gates type stuff - enjoyable live but had some sound problems

Detrimentum are a clash between old school DM and Grind with some doomy moments. Their drummer also blasts for gore/grind sickos Gorerotted and is insane! It took three songs for the sound to sort itself out but from there they played a blinder. One to watch

Mithras were basically the band I'd come to see. Forever advancing Legions is one of my favourite albums and when they played Sloping Altars..... WOW! Best discribed as like the more progressive moments of Formulas Fatal to the Flesh. The musicianship was breathtaking but the songwriting overshadowed even the eightfingered tapping moments. I've been plugging this band for ages and it looks like they'll really make it. They were on the cover of last months terrorizer so hopefully you'll be hearing a lot about this band.

Cancer were a cool UK DM band who made quite a lot of waves in the early 90s (so much so they were signed to Roadrunner - when RR were good- went to Morrisound to record with Scott Burns and enlisted James Murphy to play lead) but then they did a "swansong" and then split up. But now they've reformed. I never cared for them that much - they had some good songs but at the time I would have rather heard Obituary. However, last night, they were amazing! Old School DM the way it was supposed to be. None of you hyperblast rubbish just chugging riffs and great choruses. Thoroughly enjoyable. They played a new song and it looks very promising!

Great night, bad morning!

Happy Birthday Man!

ive got some interesting band news for all of you:

our drummer and i have figured out how to do the Origin/John Longstreth one handed drum roll/blast beat... and so now we are experimenting with incorporating it into your music. pretty darn sweet haha

also... anyone from here going to the NJ Metal and Hardcore Festival this weekend? i sure am... \m/

Jondur
11-11-2003, 03:16 AM
aaaahhh the infamous gravity blast. Get that snare drum tuned high then cos it doesn't cut through otherwise. A lot of people who do that have an extra snare drum at the side that they use for the gravity blast so they can have a lower tuned one for the rest of the beats.

Well my band is including very slow half time beats and extended triplet rolls!

To Hobo:

try Lykathea Aflame who have quite positive messages,

At The Gates (later albums tend to be more socio-political)
Napalm Death (politics/left wing stuff)
Morbid Angel (later albums are all Sumerian/Lovecraftian mythos - but early albums as very satanic)
Obituary (no-one has a clue what they're singing)

Mortification are a christian Death Metal band. Most of their music is death to deathy-thrash with some rather heavy christian lyrics.

If you are a christian that likes some pretty heavy music, Mortification is for you.

Lykathea Aflame (get it NOW!)
Aeternus (not sure, but I think I read they're christian)
Amon Amarth (Viking inspired lyrics)
Bleakwail (a bit weird, but very christian lyrics)
Extol (another christian band)
Gandalf (can't remember a ton of lyrics, but what I do remember wasn't Satanic)
Horde (harsh black metal with very christian lyrics)
Mortification (ranges from grind to death to crap rock)
Soul Embraced (yet another christian band)
UnderOath (and another one...christian)
Zao (and another)
Few Left Standing (you guessed it...another one)
Living Sacrifice (yep...another one)
Demon Hunter (comparable to Stone Sour...but better. and christian)
Society's Finest (thrashy kind of stuff with christian lyrics)
Believer (one of my fave christian bands, heavy thrash. good stuff)

note...not all death metal. There's tons of stuff out there. Solid State Records is a christian label that signs primarily metal bands. Also www.radrockers.com has a decent selection of christian metal. Go there and search for "Type:Extreme Metal" and you should come up with a fair amount of stuff.

Bands because all Black Metal is anti-Christian.

Oh yeah you're supposed to call it "white metal"... HIM is not gothic rock, HIM is "love metal"... Impaled Nazarene ain't black or death metal, they're "nuclear metal". Yea right.

This argument (I dunno why) always irritates me. Lyrical content does not ever, under any circumstances, in any way shape or form, dictate musical genre. Listen to Horde. If no one told you he was singing christian lyrics, you'd think it was another Satanic black metal album. Horde (musically, not lyrically) is comparable to Darkthrone, Nokturnal Mortum and the likes. Black metal. I don't care what they sing about, lyrical content does not dictate genre. They could sing their weekly grocery list. If the music they're singing to is black metal, it's black metal.

xAzagthothx
11-12-2003, 04:36 PM
yeah. its what the band sounds like... not really like... what their ideology is or whatever. if that were the case, morbid angel would be something like "acid trip philosophically organized music" or something wacked like that...

LegionsofMarduk
11-12-2003, 06:59 PM
Hell if the idealogy behind the lyrics defined the genre, virtually every band would be in a genre by themselves. And I'm in a bitchy mood. So I'm venting.

DestroyerChris
11-12-2003, 08:13 PM
no, i think lyrical content is very important in dictating a musical genre. the lyrics are just as important to a song as the actual music itself, so why not? And the same with ideals. punk, well real punk, is very political. that's idealism. death metal is very nihilistic. black metal is very religious (in a satanic sorta way). real punk wouldn't be political/anarchistic without the lyrics, right? right. you can't say "whoa buddy, that riff sounds so anarchistic!" i quit. i'm done ranting

LegionsofMarduk
11-12-2003, 08:35 PM
So lets take...say...Marduk. One of the (relatively speaking) better known black metal bands. Their lyrics are pretty Satanic. Now lets say they change the lyrics. But the music stays the same. "Christraping Black Metal" becomes...hell I dunno..."Behold The Power Of Cheese." But the music stays the same. Is it or is it not still black metal? Or lets play with Lucifer. Their song "Watching The Christians Burn" suddenly gets renamed to "Watching The Flapjacks Turn." The music is still death metal. Or I guess I could make an attempt at punk (not really into the music that much...sorry). Lets say The Sex Pistols. "Anarchy In The UK" becomes...(ummm...really pushing for one here)..."Playing with pink bunnies" ( )but keeps the same music. Would it not be punk anymore? Point being that the music is what makes the genre. Not the lyrics. I will agree that in certain cases the lyrical content can have an added effect. But the genre is not defined by lyrical content or ideology.

How often do we do this one? And you nicked the grocery list analogy off me!

there's death metal bands who sing about political issues (Pyrexia), there's punk bands who sing about horror flicks (The Misfits) does this mean they should swap genres?
