The Dissection reunion will go very well. All the ex-convict evilness and such will make it Nuclear Blasts single point of grimnity, with their loss of Immortal.

I will also look forward to new Candlemass. I would not be surprised to see them pull something awesome out of their asses.

Personally, I don't think the Dark Angel reunion will go to well. Gene is really focused on SYL, and loves living in Vancouver, so I don't know if he'd really be putting enough effort in to make the band great again. And Dark Angel without him? That's just not possible.

Did you read the Dissection interview in Terrorizer? Hilarious! Jon is one wierd chap. I met him in 96 and he seemed really nice - quite quiet but nice enough.

Candlemass have already proved they still have the magic live so it's posible that an amazing album may be on its way!

I agree on Dark Angel

Celtic Frost is the one I'm most worried about - Tom G Warriors been hinting about a more "modern" sound - could be nasty.

Well I went to the Cradle of Filth show last night. No death metal, but still...Didn't want to start a thread and some of us do reviews in here so here goes.

First band was Shadows Fall. They did a really good show. I'm not real familiar with them so I don't know song names or anything. The singer was really high energy, running around, headbanging. He stage dove a couple of times. It was a pretty short set, but a good one. Decent pit.

Second band was Killswitch Engage. Again, not real familiar with them so I don't know song names. They were really high energy as well. One of the guitarists was all over the stage. Not a very friendly pit. Pretty rough. But fun.

Then came Cradle of Filth. Jondur you're right. They do a really good show. My only complaint was the length of the show. For having as many alsbums as they do, they could have played a lot longer than they did. But it was still good. There were a couple of stilt walkers on stage which was pretty cool. And they did a decent amount of their older material. They only played a few songs from Damnation And A Day. From what I remember, the set included: Dusk And Her Embrace, Her Ghost In The Fog, Cruelty And The Beast, Thank God For The Suffering, Ebony Dressed For Sunset, The Forest Whispers My Name, Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, Born In A Burial Gown, and a couple more from the new album.

All in all, a good show. Worth the ticket price. I'd definatly go see them again. I think too that I might be checking into Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage a little more. I already liked what I'd heard from Shadows Fall, but I think I might have to actually go buy an album. Killswitch Engage seemed good too, but the sound for them wasn't as good as for Shadows Fall or Cradle. I might download some stuff from them and if it's as good on album as it was live then I might have to pick up an album of theirs too.

Glad you had a good show man. I wouldn't bother with Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage if I were you. It's cool live but on record it's just a bit boring.

Ok, I've made this song on GuitarPro 4, so its midi :Puke:

But!

Let's pretend, that it's a real song, or could be made into one (or something that way); what do you think of the composing?
Inspiration comes from Testament, Meshuggah, Martyr, doom metal and maybe some of Opeth.

ahhh, it's a good start. Far, far, far to much going on for a 2 minute song. Drums are poorly programmed at 00:47-00:53. The little descending dealy before 1:10 sounds poor in Midi, but might sound better elsewhere. And perhaps I'm a bit fùcked, but it sounds like you programmed most of it within the same time period. correct? While composing, things tend to go better if you do it seperately, and add stuff onto it as you go, then everything at once. Start with guitar, then drums, then bass, then vocals. My opinion anyway.

I saw Shadows Fall last Saturday and the pit was crazy as hell!!! I know that you're right about Killswitch Engage's set. The pit for them is pretty wild. Have you seen their video for Fixation On The Darkness. That video shows you how bad it's gonna be at one of their shows. If you're looking to buy a good Shadows Fall album get The Art Of Balance.

i have to disagree about the negative Shadows Fall comments. ive seen them 4 times, and they have only gotten better. they ****ing SLAY live. definately one of my favorite bands to see ever. i agree, however, about the cd thing. i dont like to listen to them on CD. they sound....sterile almost. definately lacking the live energy they have at a show. same for me with Dying Fetus. i cant stand them on cd, but love them live.

also, my other band Mucopus has been in the studio this week recording a song for a local Albany compilation that Sherwood Webber of Skinless is putting together. the song is called Corporation X, and it ****ing POUDS. ill keep you guys updated on it.

Anyone that likes grind is gonna love this band. Check out Frightmare. They are on Razorback Records and here are some pages about them and their cd. Also i've got an mp3 for ya.
http://www.razorbackrecords.com/fright.htm is the page with them and their album

http://www.razorbackrecords.com/sounds.htm is the page with mp3s.
Frightmare have a brilliant use of horror movie samples and very good music unlike Mortician. They definitely aren't Mortician. Frightmare have got also solos. They write about scenes from the movies you hear samples of. Just check them out.

Another Razorback Recording artist that I haven't heard, but are suppose to be awesome are The County Medical Examiners. I read a review of their full length disc and it described them as sounding like Carcass's "Reek of Putrefaction" and "Syphonies of Sickness". They are obsessed with Carcass and the members of the band are doctors. Don't let that fool you they are suppose to be amazing.

Deceit *new song*
Effigy Of The Forgotten
Torn Into Enthrallment
Reincremation
Suspended In Tribulation
Pierced From Within
Leige Of Inveracity
Subconsciously Enslaved *new song...i think thats the title*
Breeding The Spawn

i think that was the list. other highlights of the night:

-Frank Mullen's Brooklyn accent
-Frank Mullen saying how he would break Fred Durst in half
-Frank Mullen wanting to be thrown into a woodchipper and sprayed on the crowd if he dropped dead on stage
-me meeting an extremely hot 18 year old metal chick who lives not too far from my house
-picked up Krisiun's "Apocalyptic Revelations" for 5 bux

yeah i cant remember anything else.

Except for the Ree-ee-ee part. It would sound good either really low, or high, or both layered on top of each other, but it doesn't really appeal to me it's the form it's in right now. But it's a very small blemish on an otherwise good song.

This band is what The Crown should have been. I like this album because it picks up where Slaughter of The Soul left off, brutal and melodic. Plus all the songs sound fresh, not like a rehashing of old At The Gates genius. Hopefully these guys put out a few more quality albums, because there is a lot of potential here.

No way. Grotesque were superb. The Crown have good moments (like Friday on the black stage at Wacken!! \m/) and Skitsystem are cool too. All hail Tompa!

Anyway got back from Wacken late last night and am working today so I'm pretty knackered. But I did see Extreme Noise Terror, The Crown, Dismember, Carpathian Forest, Testament, In Flames (or In Korn might be closer), Kataklysm, Vader, Darkane, Malevolent Creation, Nile and some LA thrash band - who only went and played the whole of Reign in Blood. In order! From Start to Finish!"!!!!!!! With Dave on drums!

In addition to seeing these bands I also managed to fall over, vomit, knock my tent down, sing along to a capella versions of Manowar, be generally abusive and managed to get about three hours sleep over the three days.

OK - quick Wacken Reviews:

Extreme Noise Terror: Despite the fact that ENT are a lot more metal than punk now they still played an excellent set in the same way they always used to play. They were quite frankly drunk, abusive, aggressive and very good.

The Crown: I wish Tompa was still in 'em. However they played excellently - decent sound, good stage presence and some great songs. I was however suffering from heat, sun and hangover so this dulled my enjoyment somewhat!!

Dismember: Old School heaven!!! The old Sunlight guitar sound - class songs - cured my hangover!

Carpathian Forest: not very good. I've only got the demos but this punky black metal/rock n roll just doesn't do it for me. Plus the bass player needs to either a) cut back on the pies or b) keep his shirt on. My stomach was not up to that kind of sight!!

Gotta go might post the rest later

ENT played a stormin set at Colchester Arts centre the other day. but you should have read the review in the local newspaper, the guy was trying to make out that he liked it but clearly had no idea what he was talking about. he seemed to think the only reason we went to these gigs was to leave with a headache!?!

mmmm... yes, welcome to our world, my friend...

At The Gates

Legion
Slaughter of the Soul
Cold
and basically anything else off of the Slaughter of the Soul album

also be sure to check out Nightrage, the Crown and the haunted. All 3 bands have former members of At the Gates in them.

Am I the only one who thinks that Slaughter of the Soul was **** compared to The Red in the Sky is Ours, and With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness? It's like they heard Heartwork, and suddenly dumbed everything down to make it more melodic. a tragic waste if you ask me.

CephalicMeshuggah
08-05-2003, 09:25 PM
I kinda thought that pre-Slaughter At the Gates is subpar. Its not terrible, but nothing stands out really special, except for a few songs. When you consider bands such as Death, Cryptopsy, Carcass, early At the Gates isn't so hot.

Also, The Black Dahlia Murder struck me as very generic as well, couldn't see what the big hype was.

They played Decapitated's "Sypheres of Madness  " and Obituary's :The End Complete  ". Those were probably the best f***in' videos they played. I also found out that Jared Anderson of Hate Eternal has left the band for a while to confront his drug problem that he has had over the last few years.

Grotesque are cool but very satanic (well most Black metal bands are lol). Where did you go on holiday Jondur? Did you party hard Andrew WK style? lol.

Got a gig tomorrow in the middle of one of the towns near me. The set list is going to be:

Master Of Puppets with the bouble bass palm muted bit before the mellow break down.
Black sabbth - Paranoid (megadeth style)
ghost of the Navigator - Maiden (its in drop D as its very hard to sing)
Fuel for Hatred _ Satyricon
Two originals
Every Time I die - Cob (there is a bass solo instead of keyborad as we dont have one, should be fun for me)

What do you think of the set list?

I did download the 'drum check' though. my drummer (not a big fan of death metal) was blown away :thumb:

I got a shock today, though. I met someone else who owns a copy of None So Vile  I thought I was the only one in the whole county of Oxfordshire who did. still, the good news is the guy who owns it is our new bassist. so me and him are gonna get along :thumb:ly.

I went to Rhodes. It was very, very hot. I spent my time drinking beer by the pool, visiting ancient ruins, singing "The Knights Templar" everytime some tour guide mentioned the Knights of St John (who built half the island), reading books, swimming, romancing my lovely girlfriend and generally doing as little as possible. It was great.

And no Andrew WK did not come into it. Although I did tell the missus that I wanted "fun, fun, fun"!

well...today probably has been the ****tiest ****ing day of my whole god **** life.

first off, today was supposed to the day of tracking drums for the Angeldeath EP. alright, so me and our engineer drive an hour to our drummers house with his CPU and mixer and mics and what not to record. so we get there, and were setting everything up, and we need a monitor because we didnt bring our engineers because he has an LCD display one that would probably break in a car. our drummers dad gets home, and wont ****ing let us borrow their family computer's monitor. a ****ing computer monitor. he tells us to figure something out. FIGURE SOMETHING OUT. when we cant do a **** thing else. so we had driven an hour for nothing. wasted an entire afternoon.

now heres the icing on the cake for today. Malignancy is playing tonight here. ****ing Malignancy. because of the blackout, Irate cancelled. the guy who runs Step Up Presents, the promotion company putting on the show emailed us this morning asking if we could take Irates place on the show, play right before Malignancy. we had to let him know by 12 noon today if we could do it.

no recording, no big show break. i want to ****ing kill all of you.

College eh? Well, it's it a sacrifice you'll have to be willing to make. What's more important? An education, or the single greatest piece of music ever made?

Some terrible news....

I just lost my entire CD collection. Over 200 albums! It may have been stolen, but the fact remains it is not to be found. It included all of my Carcass, Opeth, Cryptopsy, Metallica, In Flames, Cynic (thats one hard album to find, just got it a week ago), Cannibal Corpse, The Haunted, Nile, just every metal band I had. Now all I have left is 5 albums. I have to start from scratch. It is truly like losing a piece of my soul. No idea where my CD case went.

Just have to build up the collection again....

tomarrow should prove interesting:

wake up 9 am, have to be at Mucopus singer's house by 10 am. weve got to load gear, and be at the festival place by 11 am. we play at 12:30. after were done, we have to drive a good hour and a half to be at my other bands drummers house by 2:30. have to set up and record 7 drum tracks in 2 hours. leave his house at 4:30. get back to the show, pick up my car, drive back to Mucopus singers house and drop off gear. drive back to my house and finish the rest of the Angeldeath demo.

I am in love with my PC again, now that I'm able to work a tiny program called SoulSeek. I found so much on there, like :

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris (which is next on my 'to buy' list - it's like WOW!!)
EXTOL - Synergy (really technical stuff, the vocals aren't as good as on Undecieved, but still a :thumb: from me)
Necrophagist - Onset Of Putrefication (Carcass + uber technicality = :) )
Zyklon - Aeon (fantastic album, great all round really)
Morbid Angel - Heretic (it's Morbid Angel, what d'you think?)
Atheist - Elements (I see what Coypu saw in this album. masterpiece)

I really dislike having to download stuff to hear it, but it really is the only way. but all is not lost, I only need to pay for two things - my guitar and my Dream Theater ticket. then it's \m/ all the way for me :D

Dimmu Borgir (enthrone darkness triumphant)
