Hard to fit them in any where, you have to hear them, Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend deserve their own genre.

3rd Page!!! Come on people!!
Here's a question for ya:
Anyone like Celtic Frost? Or Hellhammer?
Both were HUGE influences on the death metal scene and CF especially wrote some amazing music. Hellhammer are an acquired taste but CF should be heard by everyone!
Check out "Morbid Tales" "To Mega Therion" for classic death/thrash
"Into the Pandemonium" was one of the first records to really push the boundaries of extreme metal, featuring strings and female vocals
If you like really primitive harsh black metal then you should try and get hold of some Hellhammer - there are various re-releases around.

guys, I need some feedback from you on that track:
www.nuadu.de/Chaos Cult - Die Brut (may2003).mp3
it's the first song my band wrote, during our first 3 band pratices.
We haven't been practicing it much (we've had 7 rehearsals right now, but spent most of the time writing a new song that isn't finished yet) so please don't flame the actual rendition too much :D
I would like to have comments on:
- how you liked it (generally)
- wether you liked the vocal style
- wether you think we should add some more parts to that song (so it's less repetive) or just leave it as is and focus on new songs
- how you would categorize the music

Needs a better bottom end. Drumming is boring, and could be improved upon in great measure. The guitars have no loew end either, and the bass is too far down in the mix. Most of the guitar melodies and vox sound pretty good. The vocal would sound bettter, if they were a bit more dynamic. The vocalist could very easily sound like Katla from Finntroll, would would fit the music very well.
That may seem a bit critical, but I actually quite enjoyed it. More bottom end and it would turn out well. Great work considering the amount of practices you've had so far.

thanks a lot for your detailed comment!
yeah we had a bit of problems with the recording, i mean us idiots forgot to switch the bass mic on so the only bass you hear is what is picked up by other microphones... i think that says it all :upset:
about the vocals: yes i'm positive aswell that he could sound better, i think the Katla-comparison will really motivate him to try harder :D
the drums will (hopefully) be improved, our drummer had a really bad day (kept dropping his sticks... )
btw. does anyone with band experience here have some advice for me for doing a decent soundcheck.
I alway try to get both a good sound in the room aswell as a bearable recording qualitie (we mic bass drum, overhead drumkit, guitar, bass, vocal seperatly and record it all to one track on pc because my soundcard has just 1 input) but the rest of my band gets bored after 15...
some tips on how to EQ drum and bass to fit each other (we often have problems with the bass drowning out the bass drum OR the drums sounding too thin)
with simple Hi-Mid-Lo EQ's would also be appreciated.
I hope we get a better recording next pratice, with a bit of luck our 2nd guitarist finally has his own amp by then so we don't have to share mine (2 guitars into one amp sucks soundwise... you either have just lowend or none at all...)
so I guess no one has read that far  but please just keep the comments on the song coming.
ah yes and a little quiz for anyone who cares:
in the last seconds of the track our drummer starts a transistion to a well-known metal song (I had to cut the actual song due to file size) and I think it's possible to find out which :D
Samuel
05-06-2003, 05:59 AM
the vocals are too high in the mix, and not enough lowend (probably because of the bass mic being off, but you need more on the guitars too).
but those are just recording problems, the song itself is realy good. I'd class it as a sort of melodic stuff, a bit like depresy
LegionsofMarduk
05-06-2003, 06:39 AM
The song itself is pretty decent. I think there are some obvious issues that you already pointed out, but once those issues get resolved I think it'll be really good.

for a good soundcheck live, make sure you can hear everything through your monitor that you need to in order to be on track for the song. also, you need to be able to hear yourself as well. just make sure you get a good mix/level through your monitor and w/ your amp.

yeah the monitor...something my bandmates have still refused to invest in so we use my marantz hifi system... that's why i can never be sure how it will sound in the end on different systems.
I know you were talking about live , but with recording it's a problem aswell as my sound system seems to have a big influnence on the tone, no matter how flat i set the EQ I can never be sure that what i hear (when i play the recordin back) is what other peoples will hear.
I guess I'll have to sarifice some of my own $$$ to buy atleast some decent active monitor box

Does the current drummer for Dimmu Borgir use triggers?
Jondur
05-09-2003, 03:07 AM
He did use triggers in Cradle of Filth but then I've seen him on a non-triggered kit with Lock-up and at an early Cradle gig. I've idea whether he triggers with Dimmu Borgir. Why?
Do NOT start the whole triggering/cheating debate because it's not true.

I've listened to that live cd (cant remember the name); he's pretty **** amazing if he doesnt use triggers; seldomly have I heard double bass go so fast and so stable.
Samuel
05-09-2003, 05:50 AM
excuse my ignorance, but what is a triggered drum?
Jondur
05-09-2003, 06:41 AM
A drum trigger is simply a device that attaches to a drum and converts the vibration of the drum skin into an electrical signal. The signal then goes to a synthesiser that produces a drum sound. Put simply you don't hear the acoustic drum sound, you hear the synthesiser.
Most modern death metal bands have triggered kick drums. This is simply because this gives a very defined, short, sharp sound which is obviously what you want if you're doing fast double kick work - a fat rock bass drum sound would just end up as a mush.
Mardy: Even if he was using mics instead of triggers the signal from the mics would be compressed to get the same volume etc from each kick drum. Triggers have nothing to do with it - he's simply an excellent drummer.

Agreed.
Anyway, I highly reccomend to everyone to pick up the new Vital Remains disc, Dechristianize. This is probably their best work to date. Suzuki's drumming just keeps getting tighter and tighter, with great production on his kit on this album. His harmonies and solos on this album are also truly amazing, especially on the title track, Dechristianize. I thought that having Glen Benton on vox would bring down this album a notch, but I was definately wrong. Possibly the best vocal performance Glen Benton has ever done. More guttural than his stuff with Deicide, and while it does not suit the music as well as the previous vocalist, IMHO, it's still great. Go out and buy this CD right now! Sweet booklet and art too, plus slipcase.

Nuadu: monitors arent a necessity for practice or rehearsal, in my opinion. my band got through fine without it. as long as your singers PA is loud enough to be heard over the drums and at adequate volumes that satisfy yourself, you are good to go. the only thing odd dealing with monitors for the first time is having the sound coming right back at you...instead of say...having your guitar amp coming from behind you. youre stuck in this immense wall of metal...and all you can do is headbang your way out...\m/

well our practice room sound is okay (people hear each other  ) but i heard frequently that you should not test recordings with a normal stereo because it colors the sound
(and seeing how different the mix sounded on my stereo and in my car it is right) so to get a good mix that will sound decent on each system i would probably need a quite neutral monitor.

Yeah, I've seen that one before, along with one that calls them a Nile rip-off. Poor, deluded people. Maybe one day they'll see the light. Perhaps when the new one comes out. Supposedly it's gonna have some female vox, and it's gonna be more "epic". You get your copy of Elvenefris yet Jon?

i had never been there before. it is a really really nice place. i like it a lot. im still recovering from Meshuggah...as they were the last band i stayed for...they stole my brain. hah. the few i feel like posting right now:
Hate Eternal: hmm...well...dissapointing. they played alright...they were a little off at first, but thats to be expected as they just got back from that huge van accident where rutan broke a few vertebrae and some other crap happened. the sound for them SUCKED. i dont know why, but i guess the sound guy decided to just arbitrarily twist knobs for them. you heard kick drum, vocals, and cymbols. you could discern Rutan when he soloed as well as Anderson, thats really the only time. they really suffered from that lack of decent sound
Nevermore: pretty tight. highly dissapointing though as they didnt play any of my favorite songs, namely The River Dragon Has Come, Dreaming Neon Black, or the Pessimist and the Optimist. the sound was lacking as well. too much bass and drums. you couldnt hear the guitars unless Loomis started soloing, which was pretty **** good. Warrell Dane is an awesome guy, pulling probably a total of 60 people on stage throughout their set, throwing them into the other members and kicking them off the stage. haha...pretty cool.
Opeth: one of the top performances of the night. sound was awesome. playing was awesome. it was a little tough though, as they went on after midnight and played for over an hour and a half. couple extreme tiredness with opeth's lush acoustic passages = really hard to stay awake. haha. they were amazing. they came on for a 2 song encore which ended with Demon of the Fall. pretty ****in badass.
Meshuggah: wow. brain fart. stupified i am. meshuggah ****ing tore it up good. the sound was amazing. the energy was amazing. they ****ing played brilliantly. they were just all around ****ing awesome. after Close Eye Visuals they shot straight into Soul Burn. they played New Millenium Cyanide Christ. try headbanging to a 21/16 rythm. yeah...totally loss of sanity. and i loved it. they ended with the almighty Future Breed Machine. insane.
Suffocation: they played. there really isnt anything else needed to be added. impecable performance. Frank's daughter came out, the worlds biggest suffocation fan he says, and threw **** into the crowd. they played NEW ****ING MATERIAL. there will be a new cd. the setlist, from what i remember, goes as follows: Thrones Of Blood, Infecting The Crypts, new song (forget the name), Torn Into Enthrallment, Liege Of Inveracity and i believe one more, yet i cannot remember.
i must go rest again. metal kicked my ***. \m/

When Fire Rains Down From the Sky, Mankind Will Reap as it Has Sown: Not as utterly necro as The Codex Necro, it's a bit more, dare I say it, groove oriented. Irrumator's drumming it's more complex, not as blasting. But there's still plenty of blasting. Not as good as The Codex Necro, but still great.

I think the recording quality has come up some. I think there is still some mixing issues though. The second song seemed like there was tons of bass and vox, but the guitar could stand to be turned up a bit. Anyway...I'm not a very good critic. I sounded like it could be quite intersting though.

we wanted the bass to stand out a bit (the intro the song is a bassline aswell) but I agree that the guitar is a bit too low in the mix.

****, the time is running out and i'll have to make a decision soon. either Wacken:Open:Air or With Full Force
(and silent prayers that i'll have enough money for both of course :D)
Wacken would rule because of:
Lordi
In Flames
Soilwork
Iced Earth
Testament
Annihilator
Nile
Kataklysm
Dark Angel
Sentenced
but on WFF there are
Amon Amarth
Opeth
Overkill
Sepultura
Anthrax
Napalm Death
Six Feet Under
Type O Negative
SAINT VITUS
My Dying Bride
Zyklon
Sodom
Destruction
(among others of course)
On both festivals there are Slayer,Subway to Sally and Die Apokalyptischen Reiter :D
right now im leaning towards going to with full force

nile are great, but a bit overrated imo
i guess i'll settle for With Full Force because of the additions to the lineup. I was all in favor of Wacken but then I heard that Opeth, Type O Negative, My Dying Bride will play.
And then there is SAINT VITUS and Debris Inc.
So my dark side will probably win :D I mean two of the best doom bands ever on one setlist

sometimes i like nile a lot sometimes i dont, to me at least, a lot of their songs seem incomplete, the just end abruptly, and on their latest album i think the drums are too loud, making it difficult to make out the guitar at many parts, that said, the sound quality is great on that album

I saw something in Metal Maniacs magazine yesturday saying saomething about Vital Remains and Amon Amarth are going to be doing a tour with Deicide this summer. I don't know where they are touring, but it would probably be a good show. I would say that Glenn Benton will probably be doing vocals when Vital Remains play, because I read an article in the November issue of Metal Maniacs about Vital Remains and Glenn said that he would probably do vocals if they were to do a tour together. Vital Remains newest album "Dechristianize" is out in stores now. I've heard that it is a must buy.

Well, I saw two gigs this weekend so I'm feeling a bit fragile today! I say Zyklon/Reign of Erebus/Mrykskog/Void on Friday and Gorerotted/Hell-Born/Desecration/The Enchanted and loads of others on Saturday. Not bad at all. Zyklon were good although the support bands didn't really do it for me.

*cough*STEREOTYPICAL IGNORANCE!!!!*cough*
you can't say that Death sound like anyone else. you can't say that Cynic sound like anyone else. you can't say that Extol sound like anyone else. Demonic-era Testament doesn't sound like anyone else. Agalloch don't sound like anyone else. Opeth don't sound like anyone else (I put these two together, because as both use clean passages they are automatically put together). Arch Enemy don't really sound like anyone else. no one CAN sound like Cryptopsy. Gorguts sound like nothing anyone else has done before. get the drift?
and as for the same bands, not many have mentioned Agalloch in this thread (I know, I've been a lingerer since last Feb when this thread was started). I think I'm the only one to mention Benediction. not many have mentioned Bloodbath. only me, Jondur and a few others from the UK know of Gorerotted and The Enchanted (and possibly Throne Of Nails, which I'm not sure many have heard). Slaytanicus is the only one to mention Lord Gore. get the drift again?
honestly I think you have either - A) only read the last two pages, and/or B) heard a clip of Cannibal Corpse and /or Morbid Angel. check out more, if you like it, carry on. if you don't like it, there's always different stuff.
[/newbie attack]
little bit of news from/for me - did anyone else know that Extol had released a new album? if so has anyone heard it and what do they think of it?

Yeah I know Throne Of Nails - Mithras is another great band, as is Detrimentum.
I'm not sure I did get your drift there when you were listing bands that weren't mentioned. Were you pointing out the sheer number of DM bands? Or how many we haven't heard of?

He does vocals, Dan Swano (edge of sanity) plays guitar and the bassist and drummer from katatonia play on it as well. Pick up the ep and full length! They're both worth it (although the full length beats the ep hands down)

I absolutely love Finntroll. They don't really sound like COB. Only other band that sounds remotely like them, is Ensiferum, who are also highly reccomended. Finntroll is finnish humpa metal. Which translates roughly to: really good melodic death metal with (awesome) black metal vocals, and a strong traditional folk influence.

Hahaha! I'd say that's about right. Ceremony of Opposites is around 7 out of my top 10 black metal albums.

You raise a good point. Altars of Madness and Blessed are the Sick were miraculous acheivements for their time, but I'm afraid that Morbid Angel are long usurped from their throne of awesomeness. Find yourself a copy of Elvenefris and fall into the fold. There's beer there too.

Terminal i was just ****in around man haha. but i still gotta disagree. no metal have i heard had just utterly blown me away as morbid angel. sure, there are more technical, fanciful bands...but i have never found a band that combines soul and feel into amazingly awesome death metal of high instrumental proficiency. they are absolute individual truth.
on a second note, i tried the fabled Morning Glory seeds for the 2nd time tonight. this time, i got more sick than last time. i have never been so violently ill before in my life. my god haha. i stood over my toilet and puke 3 times. all 3 surrounding walls besides the toilet were plasted in this yellow/pink gunk of human vomit. such a horrible experience. the high sucked too. horrible HORRIBLE horrible experience. i feel cleansed now though, and have a great time playing my guitar tonight. havent enjoyed it this much in a long while.

Whats your opinions on the band Sadus? I just downloaded some of their songs and it was ok but nothing special imo.
Also which vocalist from cryptopsy do you like best? I think i like the guy from "whisper supremacy" (i have no idea what he was called though) album best.
Xerxes
06-22-2003, 10:28 AM
The fellow from Cryptopsy's "Whisper Supremacy" album is named Mike Disalvo. I favor Lord Worm (Pre-"Whisper Supremacy") because of what Cryptopsy was when he was with them. The new singer is a mix of the two singers and can do iether, but not perfect. I favor Lord Worm's illegible vocal style. Mike's later work began to get shitty... he stopped screaming and just started doing this big deep throat noice that made him sound like satan on Helium or something.
