New digs:
Demons Claws - Satan's Little Pet Pig
Also listened to the Deerhunter record but I'm still undecided about it. It's certainly different and a good break from the pap, but I don't know if it's quality. Could be.

Brazilian stuff. I'm putting together a list of songs for my radio show, found a lot of new things to love lately. Edu Lobo's "Vento Bravo" is a real great song, gonna open the show with that one. I doubt anyone would care, but if anyone's interested, you can snag the album (self-titled (aka Missa Breve), 1973) and a buncha other cool things from this guy's blog:
http://umquetenha.blogspot.com/search/label/Edu%20Lobo

I'm kind of not sure what to make of the Panda Bear. It's good, but it's obvious that he's inviting unflattering Pet Sounds comparisons, which is kind of a dumb move.

Pretty over self-indulgent, but it's still one of my favorites so far this year.
I downloaded this album called Ou Não by Walter Franco a couple days ago, finally dug into that today. Guy can emote. His voice on the opening track makes me think of Nikki Sudden, all nasally pitched and howling. It's all acoustic though. 02-24-2007, 09:30 PM
His most recent one is the Open Season soundtrack, which is his most poppy since it's aimed at kids, but it still holds up for us semi grown ups. Talking Heads are on it too. Otherwise, Suicaine Gratification is pretty much just him and an acoustic guitar or piano, really bare, plus a couple of punk tracks for good measure.
edit: but yeah if you want melodic you should probably just get some metal
sr800bkBassist
02-24-2007, 09:40 PM
country/blues isnt melodic??
well, in the sense of the Pleased to Meet Me album, for example, where you have songs like "Alex Chilton", "Can't Hardly Wait", and "Nevermind" where it's just really good melodies, just really strong rock tracks.
and then on that album there are songs like "Shooting Dirty Pool", "IOU" and "I Don't Know" where it's just overly "rockin" and almost cheesy. like it makes me picture a 40 year old guy in sunglasses who tries to grow his hair long even though he's balding and drives a corvette. it justlacks the anthemic sound of songs like "Bastards of Young" where there's no "foot-stompin", just really really powerful music.

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
still awesome, but I have no idea how they're gonna follow it. Both this and Funeral sound like the kind of huge, grand statement album that a band's only supposed to make once, but they made it twice, so upping the ante will probably be too difficult. The only thing they can do now is an acoustic album or something. How about Electronica a la Kid A?
Eliminator
02-25-2007, 08:12 PM
I didn't think they could do anything great after Funeral and they proved me wrong.
The organ sound on the album is really good. Generally the production is. It has a sort of mushy, dense sound in comparison to Funeral and it seems to work really well.
They'll probably lean more towards post-rock. I can hear a lot of that influence in some of the guitar parts, like in "No Cars Go" and such. Definitely not straight-up stuff, but their will be an influence there. Or they'll go Bright Eyes and make more stripped down stuff after getting to grandiose for their own good.

Does anyone know if the version of No Cars Go on Neon Bible is the same as the one on the early EP?
I haven't listened to the Neon Bible version yet, but the EP version ruled.
The Jungler
02-25-2007, 08:21 PM
the Neon Bible version is a lot better. The production is better of course, it's more confident, louder, more spirited, etc. Listen to it.Meh, I'll probably just wait for the album to officially release.
I'm not big on leaks, namely because I suck at sendspace etc.

it's good.
Yeah, it is a solid indie album.
But is there really anything on it that makes it special?
I thought Funeral was a special record when I first heard it but as time went on it just revealed itself to be a typical indie statement behind a few bells and whistles. Neon Bible felt like that the first time I heard it.

Funeral really isn't an album that is special or unique in it's instrumentation or songwriting, but for me everything seems to work in just the right way to make me feel something.
I don't really listen to it as much as I used to though. Rarely, even more so now.

Arve Henriksen - Strjon
Another excellent release from Henriksen. He's been progressing considerably with each. This one is characterized by his strong inclusion of the darker electronics/production from Helge Sten. While this is definitely not post-rock, fans of it should seek Henriksen out for his atmosphere and grandiose arc.

American Music Club
Currently digging Patti Smith's Radio Ethiopia. I gave the new Ted Leo a spin. Didn't really hold my attention. Seems like there are some cool songs, but I dunno. Felt the same about Shake the Sheets save for "Me and Mia" which is kinda undeniable. I'm sure dei hates it.
Radio Ethiopia is good stuff, though. The middle ground between Horses and Easter. First side can't match up the the brilliance of the second, though. "Pumping (My Heart)" -> "Distant Fingers" -> "Radio Ethiopia" is such a fantastic little trinity. I really want this album on CD but I think it's oop or something.
