Candi Staton - His Hands
A little disappointing (having heard it compared - though not directly - to Don't Give Up On Me), but it's quite good. A little bit too smooth and background music-like sometimes, but the good songs are really pretty good. The title track (written by Will Oldham) is a good example, and "When Hearts Grow Cold" is probably one of my favourite songs of the year.
Iron Maiden - everything, but with a particular emphasis on "A Matter of Life and Death".
In anticipation of maybe seeing them later this month.
I also quite like the new Bond theme song (Chris Cornell's), and I just recently found out that Alan Moore will be appearing as a guest on an episode of the Simpsons next year, so I'm digging that fact.

i saw this folk punk band last night called Shakey Bones. they all dressed like hobos out of the great depression, with suspenders and worn out clothes/hats etc. and their drummer was so punk that instead of drumsticks he used his left fist and a knife in his right hand. up the punx. drumming with your fist and a knife > everything else.
That sounds like a fun show.
I was going to see Harley Poe, but a snowstorm and lack of car prevented it.
I just hope I can make an excellent road trip to see Gogol Bordello next weekend.

I'll admit, I have turned into a bit of a Blur fanboy. I still love the three britpop albums they did. But hey, if it's what I like...

I don't know where you live, Plath, but I know that in America, the only Blur anybody* ever seems to know about is "Woo-Hoo" [sic]. The local radio station played a live acoustic concert of theirs several years ago, and I thought they were terrible. I saw their best of in Barnes and Noble and listened to it as a joke, and I left the store with one more Blur album than I ever thought I would own. At the moment they're my favorite band, but I have also been on jaunts like this with Radiohead, Rush, and REM, so it may burn out once I've purchased all the albums. We'll see. (Sorry to derail the thread).

Go for more Frenchies. Francoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin all worked the whole sensual, breathy chanteuse angle. Give them a try if you haven't already. Maybe Jennifer Charles/Elysian Fields too, if you don't mind the kind of goth overtones.

I've been listening to a lot of Murder by Death lately, mostly Who Will Survive.., which is a change since previously I always listened to their first one a lot more. "Devil in Mexico" is fast becoming one of my favourite songs, by MBD or anyone else, as I can't get enough of the "dealing insults with his free hand" line. I'll have to get their new one sometime soon. I know a lot of people have said it isn't really very good, but I don't really care.
J. J. Jackson - But It's Alright is a really good (and surprisingly seemingly quite unknown) soul record, though more soul for partying, than southern soul. I think everyone'd do well to hear the title track, at least.
Bill Withers - Just As I Am is another album that looks like it isn't going to do well in the 65-74 list, but probably should. Most people are probably familiar with "Ain't No Sunshine", but it's far from the only great song on there. At least half the record's up to its standard, and the other half are good enough in themselves.
I'm also finding that I tend to enjoy songs I wouldn't normally think much of at all (e.g. Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated, Chad Kroeger - Hero, Switchfoot - Meant to Live) when they're on a Spiderman soundtrack.

also guys what do you think of my new thing www.myspace.com/softadvertisement
I played it all on keyboard, and I don't know how to play keyboard, but it turned out ok anyway I guess
the good thing about keyboard is as long as you have other instruments going on around it, you don't have to be good at it at all to add to the music in a good way. It's a percussion instrument :)
overall, some interesting melodies going on, but the rhythm is pretty off (i'm assuming you played all the drums on the key board too, if not, invest in a metronome or a sense of timing). another thing is the songs don't really go anywhere, but they're not finished complete songs so it's good for what it is.
i'm getting a 16 track for christmas, and im currently working on what i think will end up being the best song i've made in a while. It's full of maps-esque tapping (chill like the ongoing horrible), interesting chord progressions that remind me of mew and a crescendo that gives radiohead a run for their money.
i can't wait to record it.
