I don't have a copy either, it always seems to be unavailable/expensive wherever I go to look for it. This new one's all easy to find and cheap and stuff, which is helpful. Don't want to get it only to find that this Van Gelder guy has ruined it somehow, though.

No, I haven't heard any of them yet. I don't have high hopes, though :( Have you heard my 3? They're a pretty good, sleazy rock band that I kinda got into through the Wildhearts years ago. They broke up a while back, though.

Dave de Sylvia

I'm listening to them on myspace now, actually. I know a few of the Wildhearts folk at metal sludge think highly of them, so I'll give it a go.

I can't remember if you have a good connection, but if you do you can stream some of the nightmare covers on myspace. Surprisingly, Fall Out Boy's is the best. They covered What's This? and it really doesn't sound a lot different to their normal songs. Manson's This Is Halloween sucks, as does She Wants Revenge's Kidnap The Sandy Claws. They try so hard to be Ian Curtis, but, no.

My connection's alright, except that it hates myspace. Rarely works for playing songs. Worked alright just now, though, for a couple of songs at least. Fall Out Boy's was suprisingly good actually, yeah, probably because it's a fairly straight cover of the song. The only other one I managed to listen to before it died was Kidnap the Sandy Claws, which was awful :(

I didn't know there were Wildhearts folk on metal sludge. I think I remember there being an interview with Ginger there that I read, though.

PS asymm are you enjoying that Beach House thing, because I found it kind of boring. Maybe a few more listens.

Though not directed at me, gotta say it's pretty nice after a few listens, in that autumny, Mazzy Star sort of way. Not as stellar as p4k made out to be (as usual), but I wouldn't go so far as to call it boring.

After a couple listens, I'm not too impressed with Beach House. I'd prefer to not say boring, but so far it isn't doing well in planting a distinct impression on me. Got Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint's The River in Reverse in the post this morning. I didn't really know what to expect - all I really know about Toussaint is that he's a New Orleans R&B legend, and has worked with a soul singer I've been meaning to check out, Lee Dorsey - so, with the help of his status as Piano Man and a performance on Jools Holland, I was expecting a fairly slow, piano-heavy album that I would like but would take a bit of perseverance to get through the first few times. But I was wrong - this kicks as. The first track kicks off with slow piano, which seemed to confirm my suspicions, but then this howling telecaster comes in with the rest of the band. The most pleasant surprise I've had in a long time. The first five tracks (most of them written by Toussaint, including a couple of covers) are all excellent; after that my level of interest wavers up and down, although the last couple of tracks - especialy "Wonder Woman" - get back to approaching how good the opening quintet was.

So, it's pretty good. Sudden contender for my favourite album this year, at any rate.

Rope - Heresy, And Then Nothing But Tears
Really interesting record:
Rope formed in Poland as a guitar/bass duo in 1998. Since relocating to Chicago in 2000 they have become one of the city's most flummoxing avant rock groups. Heresy, and Then Nothing But Tears is their second full-length album. Robert Iwanik (bass, vocals), Przemyslaw Krzysztof Drazek (guitar) and Michael J. Kendrick (trap set, percussion, electronics) blend deconstructed strains of Swans' emotional weight and Last Exit's fury with propelling grooves and Krzysztof Komeda's classical suspense into lush and often uncompromising no wave abrasion. Rope's constantly evolving ocean of impossible rhythms, screaming guitar and Iwanik's hissing voice adds up to an ultra-dynamic group force of cryptic awe. Features guest vocals from Grazyna Auguscik and songwriting/vocal collaboration by Oxbow's Eugene Robinson on four songs. Cover art by famed Polish fringe painter Stanislaw Ignacy "Witkacy" Witkiewicz.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
Cursive - Happy Hollow
Whiskeytown - Faithless Street

Damn, I had a theme going on there for the first two and didn't even realise.

Mirah - Advisory Committee

Mostly standard female singer/songwriter stuff so far. Nice opener though.

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

I'd like to say that I listened to all the songs thoroughly to form an acceptable opinion about this album but really, "Duk Koo Kim" rapes every other song here. And most songs out there for that matter.

Psychic TV - Dreams Less Sweet

Finally found this, and it's pretty neat so far. I've gotta explore the Throbbing Gristle continuum more thoroughly.

Four Tops - Essential Collection

these guys are responsible for literally every single R&B song, ever. I can't believe all the stuff they've done that I've always known, but never known the artist until now.
They are fantastic. shame i only have them on vinyl. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and The Four Seasons are also to very classy groups.
