Meat puppets - Meat Puppets II
I've been meaning to download this album since 8th grade. Quite a delay...
That album is soooo great. I listened to it last night before I went to sleep in a dark room through headphones. At 1 oclock am, "Aurora Borealis" and "We're Here" sound like something I can't even describe.
Oh man, you've gotta hook me up with that. Chinese music is astonishinly difficult to find.I got it from Calabash (http://www.calabashmusic.com), and you can get it from me on soulseek. If you're not on soulseek, you might have to wait until I get back to school in a couple weeks, because the home internet situation is not so good.

Muse - Absolution
Weezer - The Blue Album
Marcys Playground - Marcys Playground
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral.
Not all are Alternative/Indie, but they're all amazing, with the exception of MP. And all three of those are albums I've been playing on a very regular basic these days.
Phish - A picture of nectar
I swear I took an at least 2 year hiatus from phish, other than the occasional song. Back in 7th-8th grade I just over-listened to it.
But after waiting so long, and bringing it back, it's still good. After this I'll probably Listen to Billy Breathes.

the music of both eras are really different from eachother, as well as written by different people and with different members. depending on my mood i usually prefer one over the other of course.

Yoshimi is purely awful. The Soft Bulletin and Mystics are worse. Light-hearted music is cool, but that **** is so light-hearted it's anorexic. It's cute/twee in a sickeningly over the top way, and it's hard to listen to.
There are only a few songs that qualify for that on Yoshimi. The other ones out number those for great justice.

like the way Race for the Prize sounds like, if it were instrumental, it could be used in a disney movie. and lots of the lyrics have a very cartoonish feel. i dig that though, it's a good change from so much bitterness. but then, of course, after too much of that i need to go back to the bitter stuff to balance it out again.

Okay I'll give it a listen.
Starts out sounding a little like Tool's "Reflection" actually. Although it's much more "Native American" sounding. Yes, I can see why this band would be a big deal. Their music is very epic and "important" sounding. Good choice nacho.

Sunny Rollins, Estradasphere, Jim's Big Ego, Frank Zappa, Uz Jsme Doma, Herbie Hancock, Jaga Jazzist, A Tuba Ensemble, and King Crimson
But only one song from each.

I haven't had an awful lot of variety in my diet the last couple of days (like I ever do huh)
House of Pain - House of Pain
Great early 90s "Irish" hip-hop group from New York. Everybody knows Everlast and the song 'Jump Around', which broke the band and is pretty much one of the best party singles ever. Really cool, fun stuff, produced by Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs and featuring B-Real (Cyrpess Hill) and Funkdoobiest. Ethniclicious.
Marxman - 33 Revolutions Per Minute
I've heard several unsubstantiated rumours that Massive Attack ripped this group off wholesale. They were a mildly successful Bristol hip-hop group in the mid-90s, most famously for being banned from BBC radio for explicitly supporting the IRA. Obviously very left-wing, but not in an in-your-face Public Enemy way, but in a laid-back dub-inspired way. Musically it's a surprisingly workable mix of trad. Irish, electronica and semi-obscure soul samples.
As Fast As - Open Letter To The Damned
I caught these guys in concert last week and I just got sent their album for review (/shifty). They're a really cool power-pop-type band, a mix of Stevie Wonder, The Who, post-Beatles Macca and Elvis Costello. Great show too.

Listening to Mink Deville's first album right now. Been passively looking for this for a little bit, stumbled across a copy this afternoon. I heard the song "Spanish Stroll" a while ago, really liked it, only could ever find compilations. Don't like buying compilations. It's cool. Classic soul sound with a hint of Punk aggression.
Also listened to John Cale's Fear earlier today. I've only had it for a short while, but it's already become my favorite Cale solo album. Might write a review for it or something.

I thought I knew my **** at 15, too. Being almost 19 now, however, I can tell you there's a lot that still develops. It's subtle. You can only really be detected when you listen to music you liked back when you were younger, and realize you appreciate it on a completely different level.
Kids on music forums like to complain that people are ageist, or that older folks don't realize that the younger guys know just as much. However, being from that camp (I've always been the "I can't believer you're only [x] years old" kid), I can tell you there's still a lot ahead of you that only age and experience can give you.

I don't mind the fact that I've still got a lot of experience - I welcome that - I just don't like it when something is referred to as a teeny-bopper band or some such, because not all teens just like a song for the aesthetics.
But I'm glad I've started enjoying, playing, and talking about music earlier rather than later.

Zappa
08-13-2006, 12:42 PM
I don't know that it's necessarily about diversifying. Really, what has expanded my comprehension most is just hearing lots of music, regardless of its "difference" from my typical favorites, and getting an understanding of what's going on through playing and writing my own music at the same time. I've come to recognize patterns that I never used to, and I just am more able to not just hear the music, but really listen to every aspect both independantly and as a whole. Musical awareness doesn't necessarily come from hearing every South American musical form or every Bach minuet. It comes from a sustained interest and active approach to music over time.

They were a ska band in the early 80's that pretty much were only known in Michigan. Some things are just meant to be listened to on vinyl, and 80's ska is one of those things. The album only has 8 songs, but it's really good, espcially for a band that never made it big.

good or bad?
"Morris Brown" is growing on me big time.

It's interesting, the rip quality is a little questionable but I guess it's the real thing. Kinda disjointed for an album that's supposed to be a soundtrack. There's some really quality/cool stuff here, though. Some filler and blah tracks too. Doesn't seem like Dre and Big Boi work to closely together, though. They barely ever appear on the same tracks. Wildest track is "A Bad Note" which is on some "Maggot Brain" meets Mogwai ****, but not really as good as either.
"Morris Brown" might be my favorite now, too. It's definitely a grower; Sleepy Brown (the dude who sings) has an album coming out in Sept I think, so all his guest spots on here have me pretty interested in that.
Send me a msg on aim and I can give you a link, username: CrumbBob.

But today I've dug sad-bastard music. Nick Cave's No More Shall We Part, Lampchop's Damaged (though that's more lo-key bastard, really), Tindersticks's Can Our Love... have gotten time today, and I think I'll put on I Am a Bird Now soon.

Jean-Claude Vannier's L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches. Pretty cool stuff on its own (instrumental funk, avant-garde pop, psychedelia), but I'd imagine there are some insanely good sample opportunities here, too. I'm trying to recall if I've heard anything here before.

Don't worry JonM, I listen to Cat Power all the time and am still bursting forth with the prescence and masculinity of a young Brando.
And DMD, that Serena-Maneesh album is damn spotty. Some good songs, yes, but weak overall.
