I don't think it's possible to not like Tom Waits.

My friend doesn't. He calls him the cookie monster and makes fun of me for liking him.

Then again, he also dislikes Johnny Cash. When he first heard his cover of "One" he thought it was joke. So **** that guy.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Straight up indie rock has always been a style that appeals to my mind but not as much to my body. I appreciate it as fully as I do hip hop, reggae, or anything else, but it doesn't move me as much. So I tend to rate indie rock albums, even ones I really enjoy, 4 stars, while records in more visceral styles get 5s. This record is close to a 5. The creative elements that make this stand out above otherwise comparable indie rock records are very visceral and instinctual, and I think that's what indie rock today chronically lacks.

Tru dat on the new Calexico. I like the Black Light/Hot Rail style a lot more than their other stuff, but the new one is still quite a nice dig.

I've actually been holding off on checking them out, reading that has pursuaded me to do so.The hype surrounding them was pretty sickening, but they're worth a try. "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away" is damn good song and it's a fun album for the most part. However, I don't think the album deserved anywhere near all the praise it got.

Hot Butter - Popcorn

Y'see, I randomly downloaded an album called Best of Moog: Electronic Pop Hits from the 60's and 70's... and the first song was "Popcorn". It was so ridiculous, that my ICP-ish silly rap-style rapper pals (and I, as their onstage dancer and pseudo-manager) decided right on the spot that we're gonna use it in the middle of their next show for a breather/robo-dance breakdown.

Yet another reason to thank the lord for the wonders of Moog, the monolith of analog synth mastery and other neato things.

But on a more serious note, my true digs include: the new Peeping Tom... and even though I only listened to a couple songs each so far, the new David Gilmour and Southern Rock Opera, my first taste of Drive-By Truckers.

They're neat, all these folks mentioned in this post. Including me, I was mentioned and I'm pretty neat.

Ornery Cephalopod

Okay, now that I'm giving the Moog album a more thorough listen right now, I just found out that "Midnight Cowboy" by Faith No More is actually a cover of one of these cheesy "electronic pop from the 60's and 70's" songs.

Plus there's some easy-to-recognize songs that were used in recent commercials or are cliche 70's cheesy songs and such.

Okay the Dog Fashion Disco album Adultery is definitely awesome. Most of the songs are just Bungle/SOAD-like circus metal, but they also threw in "Desert Grave" which is just a straight-up country song. I got sent some Absolute Kosher album that I'm listening to right now. Band is the Court and Spark. Kinda dreamy indie pop without being dream pop. A bit Enoish, in a way, a bit country in another. There are some interesting things here, but the singer's voice doesn't really strike me.

Also, I heard what I'm assuming is the new Tool single. It kinda started boring but got cool and then kinda ended. But that's the way all these "song" things work, huh?

Okay the Dog Fashion Disco album Adultery is definitely awesome. Most of the songs are just Bungle/SOAD-like circus metal, but they also threw in "Desert Grave" which is just a straight-up country song. Sort of like how they put "Pogo The Clown" in their last album (a lounge song without any other frills).

That's good to know. I'll have to try and find it (and Committed..) for a decent price, I think.

Anyway, yesterday, amongst others things, I listened to the Nick Drake albums that aren't Pink Moon, and in short I'm glad I got them. First impressions are that Bryter Layter is pretty good, but not of the quality of the other two; it sounds a little like he's coasting, like he could have made an album of that kind of quality in his sleep. Five Leaves Left is just great, though.

The Union Underground - An Education In Rebellion

This is pretty good, if a little generic at times. I'll be playing this on the way up to see my girlfriend. Rest assured I will be driving some way over the speed limit while this is playing.

If I ever had an album that I should actually feel bad about owning and liking, it'd be that.

Yeah, that's a cool album. There are actually 5 discs from just that tour (which was actually cut short, too!). You should check out Broadway the Hard Way and Make a Jazz Noise Here for more classic Zappa material mixed with newer 80s stuff played by one of his greatest larger ensembles.

hah, i'm actually downloading Make a Jazz Noise Here on soulseek right now, as well as one called Chungas Revenge. I'll check out Broadway the Hard Way as well.

btw, i have a question, and i think you'll know so here goes. I was looking on slsk for the album Lumpy Gravy yesterday, but I got some weird results. Does the album only have 2 songs?

Yes, it's a single piece in two parts. There are 22 "indexes," 12 in the first part and 10 in the second, but they are not on separate tracks.

If you like We're Only In It For the Money's more adventurous moments, you'll love Lumpy Gravy

I like Transatlanticism the best. It just seems to have the funnest songwriting.

I got some Indian Summer live recordings earlier today and I'm looking forward to hearing them a bit later. They sound like a good band.

Indian Summer kind of sucks.

Besides, Angry Son which basically makes them an okay band because it's that good of a song.

Every Indian Summer song is good. "Angry Son" is phenomenal.

False.

Every song by Kayo Dot is good though.

I don't think there are any bands where every song of theirs is phenomenal. Assuming they have a minimum of, say, twenty-five songs? Is it possible?
