The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

At first I thought this sucked, then, a few months later, I thought it was alright. Now, while I don't like all the songs, it's an amazing record for the most part. "Cemetary Gates" is my favourite song.

The band that's had the majority of my ears lately is The Teardrop Explodes. Dunno how known they are, but I hadn't heard of them until recently. Their album Kilimanjaro is pretty amazing. Catchy psychadelish post-punk new-wave type stuff. Y'know.

Also been listening to Devin Townsend's new album Synchestra. Probably my favourite album of the year so far, but I've only heard about 5 albums from this year anyway.

Maybe it's just me but Deftones are underrated. They have a lot of shoegaze in them.

I think here they are more underrated because they're a popular nu-metal band, so lots of people are like.. it's lame! But the drummer is insanely tight and Chino is one of the best vocalists (not lyricists) in heavy music right now.

I still don't think its as good as STAC, but it's certainly not to say that it's not enjoyable. "A Classic Arts Showcase" is magnificent, as is the first real song on the album. Too bad some of the songs, like the title track and "The Rest Will Follow" seem to try and sound too much like Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys. What's the deal, guys?

"A Classic Arts Showcase" by Trail of Dead is definitely the best song off of Worlds Apart. The lyrics are kinda dumb, but the music and singing is too great to pass up. It has those sparse, distorted notes for a melody that made their songs "Another Morning Stoner" and "Source Tags and Codes" stick out for me, so it's no wonder I like it.

You know what I'm talking about? That kind of guitar melody? I guess the best example would be "Answering Machine" by The Replacements.

Jay Dee's a hip-hop producer that died of kidney failure right around the time this album was finished; he did it from his hospital bed. It's a big collection of soul/R&B stuff that he sampled/looped/messed around with. So far it's my second-favorite of 2006.

I have Mono. The illness, not the band.

So I've been diggin' stuff that isn't necessarily suited for people stricken with mono, but I'm pretending it is anyway:

-Mastodon - Leviathan
-Friends of Dean Martinez - Random Harvest
-a rap mix playlist containing: Deltron 3030, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Sage Francis, The Pocket Dwellers, The Roots, De La Soul, Jedi Mind Tricks, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and 2-Pac
-Mogwai - Mr. Beast
-Down - s/t
-Acid King - III

Mmmm.... these jams take my mono and make it seem like stereo. Mayhaps even like Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm just using a pair of stereo computer speakers.

"A Classic Arts Showcase" is definitely the highlight of Worlds Apart from Trail of Dead. Appropriately epic and grandoise for this band, and I can't get enough of that song (as well as the two adjacent songs "Caterwaul" and "Let It Drive").

G-------------------------------
D------6-7-/11-9-----6-7-/11-9-
A--7-9------------7-9----------
E-------------------------------

Now if I could only figure out the one that's slightly different from that in the same song :(

Also, "Caterwaul" and "A Classic Rock Showcase" are the best songs off of Worlds Apart by Trail of Dead. Had to include the former because it's really growing on me; sort of like the "Baudelaire" of this album. Different from the other songs but undeniably awesome too.

I don't like how Pitchfork gave Worlds Apart a 4.0 out of 10, because apparently a lot of the songs sound like ripoffs. I'm glad that the reviewer didnt tear apart my favorite song, "A Classic Arts Showcase," but he said that "Caterwaul" sounds too much like Sonic Youth or MBV. Can anyone confirm this? I'm not very familiar with them but I like that song and wouldn't be averse to hearing what influenced it.

OK yeah Today is the best.

It has a real debut-esque feel to it and I generally like that in albums. The band lost a little but of its intimacy as their composition skills got better, bit their two other albums are still solid. The guitar solo on "Flowers" is perfect.

6 Elvis Costello 24
7 Sufjan Stevens 23
7 Cocteau Twins 23
9 Talking Heads 21
10 The Beatles 18

Big Fat Pig, by Clutch, came on with my playlist on random, and the lyrics caught my attention and got me properly listening to Jam Room for the first time, really. I need more Clutch.

Conflict and **** Sparrer always come together for me, for some reason, so that's them. Coliseum's still a new purchase, and the Cocteau Twins got plays just because of all the other Cs playing. The rest are incidental.

At the moment I'm not listening to anything; trying to think of the name of an Annie Lennox song from the early 90s (I think), and failing, badly.

Harmonia's Musik Von Harmonia is amazing. I described it to a guy who has already heard it as having "an alien rainforest vibe," and he agreed. This is the drummer from Neu! with the 2 guys from Cluster. Eno called them "the world's most important rock group." I love it!

Jam Room is my favorite Clutch album. Although my favorite tune of theirs will always be "Spacegrass." Fun band. I don't seem to listen to them much anymore, though.

Lotsa fun, lotsa friends, lotsa beer:

1 Half Japanese 34
3 Gang Starr 30

4 Charles Mingus 17
4 Stevie Wonder 17
7 Television Personalities 14
8 Damond Moodie 13
8 Jeru the Damaja 13
8 GZA/Genius 13

The only one of those I haven't mentioned or isn't well known is Damond Moodie. His stuff kinda makes me think about Incubus with a stronger soul bent. Not particularly interesting, really.

I read it. I've been wanting to buy some Cluster (from your mentions and also from knowing Eno worked with them) but I can't find any albums around here. That, and I've also been afraid they're stuff might be too sleepy from what I've read. I'll get to it soon either way.

All I have is Cluster '71, and it's a really crazy album. Very swooshy and scratcy staticky. Really long, structrueless exploratory tracks. Not for everyone. I've only played it once, but quite enjoyed it.

I like this Harmonia stuff quiiiiite a bit better. I'm a pretty big Neu! fan, and this is much more in that vein. Maybe a bit more playful and spacey, though. Mm.

Depends.

The very first album is like lo-fi weirdness. I don't have it though.

The Tyranny of Distance has longer, looser jams (with some cool guitar freakouts and whatnot). Shake the Sheets has tight, concise and energetic pop songs.

Hearts of Oak is literally like the middle ground between the two (which makes sense, I guess...)

Shake the Sheets is my favorite at the moment.
