I put a few more albums on my Ipod, let it charge overnight and then forgot to take it with me to work so I couldn't listen to the new albums I'd downloaded the night before. Had to wait till when I got home to listen to them which was annoying.
Anyway, today I've been digging:
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die - I've had this for absolutely ages on my pc but only just got around to listening to it today. It's a good album but I personally prefer their self titled, Millions... doesn't quite have the haunting songs that makes their self titled so enjoyable.
Lee Morgan - Lee-way - I've been on a bit of a Lee Morgan downloading craze at the moment. I've had The Sidewinder (considered his best and one of my favourite ever jazz albums) for ages but recently since I got my net working again I decided to try and get some more of his stuff. It's a very enjoyable pre-Sidewinder album but nowhere near the classic status of his masterpiece.

Gasp. But Pinback's his best project!
Eh, nothing else he's done compares to Heavy Vegetable in my opinion.
Diggage:
Nujabes - Metaphorical Music 2: Modal Soul
Nujabes is a Japanese producer who uses American rappers in his records. It's great Jazz-driven Hip-hop. This album was my favorite of '05.

Thanks man, I think I've already added you, I'll find out later. My username is Skienzy, I don't think I'm sharing any files yet, I've only just got slsk a few days ago.
Although what I have been digging a lot recently has been a lot of Tom Waits, and some Portishead, what I'm going to spend a lot of time listening to is Ralph Records related things.
Right now:
Snakefinger - Manual of Errors (album)
Recently, I got contacted by someone via myspace that used to work at ralph, and was close friends with Snakefinger. I was fascinated by the stuff he told me, and really glad that he'd share it with me. He was suprised that a 16 year old listened to stuff like the residents, renaldo and the loaf, and snakefinger.
So now it's time for me to take a trip down memory lane. Snakefinger, Renaldo and the Loaf, The Residents (of course), Negativland, Tuxedomoon, and any other smaller bands I can find related to Ralph Records.
I really forgot how good this Snakefinger album is.

Lee Morgan - Lee-way - I've been on a bit of a Lee Morgan downloading craze at the moment. Lee Morgan is awesome. I've only just gotten The Sidewinder but it's great. I think I've listened to it every day since I got it.
Right now, though, I'm on some Mike Ladd. He makes some fantastically pretentious music a lot of the time, but sometimes the groove just wins out. At different times in his career, he's been, among other things: a nerd rapper, a mainstream faker, jazz auteur, beat poet, funk rocker, electronic musician. He's done all fairly well. The last thing he did was Father Divine, which has him working with some TV on the Radio contributors and Antipop Consortium folk. It could have been horribly annoying but it's pretty quality, might be worth looking into if you like Beck, TV on the Radio or are already familiar with Mike Ladd.
I also bought some crappy Modern Lovers leftovers compilation album today. Production usually doesn't offend me, but this is kinda sad. Whaddya gonna do, I guess.
Quick question for you, Crumb:
What's it mean when somebody is referred to as a backpacker in hip hop?
Robert Crumb
01-11-2006, 05:59 PM
They usually call someone a backpacker if they're into underground stuff. Used to be the kids would wear backpacks to shows and stuff, with who knows what in 'em. Notebooks and french novels, I think.
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks guys.

Jono El Grande - Fevergreens
Descriptions aren't easy.
And now for something completely different! The young Norwegian outsider composer leads his 9-piece orchestra through a highly personal and unique collection of instrumentals, with nods to early seventees progressive rock, easy listening, film music and sophisticated pop. A vital and life affirming rollercoaster ride combining intricate arrangements with memorable and melodic hooks.
Chin Up Chin Up - We Should Have Never Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers
I don't know how to pigeonhole this band. Maybe a cross between Minus the Bear, Modest Mouse and the Arcade Fire. It's not as generic-indie as it sounds. Pretty solid 4/5.
They're ok but I got bored with that album pretty quickly.
I've also been inspired to dig some Cat Power due to all the talk about her recently. You Are Free mainly. I think I'll look for the leak of The Greatest since it's getting such good comments.

So I've been listening to a lot of stuff the past 24 hours or so, the most prominent of which were Pulp's A Different Class and Danny Elfman's A Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack.
The latter I am currently playing; I've never been a huge fan of musicals, but I do love this movie (watched it again over Christmas) and Danny Elfman is one of the premier pop musicians of the last 20 years; the soundtrack is typical of him in many ways, but still quite a different listen as it's completely original but designed not just to fit within the plot but to essentially drive the plot.
The Pulp album I find breath-taking, and I can't believe I neglected to listen to it for years. Common People, as I tell everyone who will listen with remarkable regularity, is the best single ever released. Period. Perfectly orchestrated, brilliantly written (musically and lyrically) and delivered with perfect Debbie Harry style "I don't give a ****"-ittude by Jarvis Cocker. The other songs are probably good too, but I find myself forgetting to listen to them after Common People repeats for the 80th time.

I've listened to alot of stuff the past two days or so, mostly pop punk & ska:
The Aquabats - The Fury Of The Aquabats! - Really fun album, I was really depressed this morning - I played this on the train and had to stop myself from skankin' on the train to work.
Alex Drosen (Zappa) - Sit & Melt - Nice ambient stuff from Mx's finest.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions - This Years Model - I didn't think too much of this when I first listened to it, but on second listen it's pretty good stuff, nothing special, just a bunch of solid songs.
Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview! - Great album, tons of good songs: All My Friends Are Metalheads, Last One Out Of Liberty City, Five State Drive (my favourite on the album).
The Arcade Fire - The Arcade Fire EP - Nothing special really, I didn't like too much of it. Has a couple of good songs but nothing to write home about.
Fall Out Boy - Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girl - Fun album, not as good as Take This To Your Grave (one of my favourite pop-punk albums) but still enjoyable nevertheless.
Midtown - Forget What You Know - Not as good as some of their other albums but still not too shabby.
The Violent Femmes - S/T - Listened to this for the first time yesterday, I'm digging it alot; I've had Blister In The Sun stuck in my head for two days straight now.

Listened to alot of music since I got home from work:
Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? - I was pleasantly surprised by my first listen of this album today. I expected it to be a pile of guitar wankery but there's some good songs on here and tons of brilliant solos.
Tom Waits - Bone Machine - My downloaded copy keeps cutting the ends off a few songs so I'm gonna have to get an original copy - and another Tom Waits album along with it. I just literally downloaded Rain Dogs so I'm going to give that a listen tomorrow.
Mr Bungle - California - I didn't really like this album when I first listened to it some months ago but I decided to give it a second chance and it's really good, very crazy, but good. Goodbye Sober Day is a perfect closer.
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come - Never fails to disappoint no matter how many times I listen to it.

Aceyalone + RJD2 - Magnificent City
Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship, Haiku d'Etat and uh, Aceyalone. He's a pretty solid, somewhat old school MC. You know RJD2. First sweet collaboration of the year. The album opens with "All For U" and "Fire" which are both raw, absolutely perfect. The rest is pretty solid, too. A little top heavy but a something nice to stick in your car. Best of all? No skits or guest spots.

I'm actually growing to like the White Stripes quite a lot, though I have foolishly distanced myself from all my newest purchases for the next week, and so can't listen to them. I don't like the Dresden Dolls much, perhaps because a former flatmate of mine was so insistent on my listening to them, but they're not bad. Lately I've been listening to alot of shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive), post-rock (Mogwai -- Mr. Beast ftw!, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), indie pop (Belle & Sebastian, Rogue Wave), noise rock (Boris, Lighting Bolt, Deerhoof, Sonic Youth), and old Brazillian music (Caetano Veloso, Os Mutantes, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil). Stuff like that.

Endtroducing today. Probably the perfect pitchblack record. It's such a organic monster and your brain can just drift to all sorts of conculsions.

Oh ****, it's only for music we've listened to today?
Well, that's the music I've been listening to (plus many many more artists) the past few weeks.

Well, most of us post in here so much that it does typically represent a day's listening pleasure. However, "lately" extends at least a month, I'd say.

I finally got to listen to "Casimir Pulaski Day" and was floored. Stevens can really write a great sad song, even when his other stuff is merely "good."

The Dead Texan - The Dead Texan
Awesome album. A really great ambient release from the Stars of the Lid man.
Skyphone - Fabula
Debut release from Danish trio, probably closest in spirit and musical ideology to Alog and Phonophani in the way they mix electronic and acoustic elements, either sampled or played by themselves. Side by side you can find slow Joy Division type basslines, acoustic guitar pickings, glitch elements and naive melodies only Kraftwerk could have dreamed up. A highly atmospheric, melodic, subtle and detailed soundscape.

They are too a punk band! Well at heart anyway.
I think the problem is that I'm just dogmatically resistant to calling anything I like "punk."

The core of Minutemen's music very much is the definition of punk rock. They write short, fast, angsty songs, often with politically charged lyrics. They have a lead vocalist that either shouts or sings poorly. The drums are loud, and the music is sloppy and loose. They have the spirit of being true to oneself, and they hold the punk rock interest of skimming off layers of excess from the essence of rock sound.
They don't sound exactly like the Ramones or Dead Kennedys, but that doesn't mean they're not a punk rock band. In fact, in a lot of ways that spirit of originality coupled with their "back to basics" approach to creativity makes them even more "punk."

Goldmund - Corduroy Road
Light, piano ballads. Very gorgeous and soothing. Off the terrific label, Type Records.
Julien Neto - Le Fumeur de Ciel
Also a Type Records release - so it has the very delicate electro-acoustic style. Similarly terrific.
Robert Crumb

Prefuse 73 - Security Screenings
Decent set of classic Scott Herren instrumentals. Also a Four Tet collaboration that lives up to its name ("Creating Cyclical Headaches") and a Tunde Adebimpe guest spot. But mostly kinda eh.
Ry Cooder - Chavez Ravine
Still letting this one sink in. The only thing I really know about Ry Cooder is that he's worked with every musician who lived, or something. Hits of South western flavor.

Check out my review.
I'm digging Private Press tonight. It's kind of inferior by so much to Endtroducing. I'd kind of relate it to the way Bulbasaur is to Venasaur. I mean, he could be good. But if he just evolved into the other, it'd be so much better.
