No no, I'm quite a Talking Heads fan myself, but I think that's a pretty huge call to make. I wouldn't call them the best band to come out of the 70's.

If I was to pick (and this is hard) I'd probably go with someone like Television, Patti Smith or the Buzzcocks. I dunno though, it's near impossible to make a call like that accurately.

Talking Heads is the best band to come out the 70s, in my opinion. What do you think?
That depends on how you classify "to come out of the 70s." If it means they released their debut album in the 70s, then I'd agree that Talking Heads are the best. But if it means they had their prime in the 70s, I'd go with Bowie.

Tangy zizzle

Actually yeah, add Bowie and the Modern Lovers to my list. I'd pick Bowie as the most important of that era.

I'm going to go on record saying that Jane Doe is the most powerful metal album ever. Literally ever. I can't listen to it for too long or my ears hurt.

Neat. I listened to the 30-second allmusic.com sample of the first song and I contended that it would be a lot of fun to listen to (albeit painful).

In other insane band news, my brother is going to a show tonight: DEP, HORSE the band, and BTBAM. Must be fun.

It's a hot one. If you dig Lee's style (as you seem to), I would recommend some Clifford Brown & Max Roach recordings, if you've got none. Clifford was the king of hard-bop trumpet. He's got less of that SOUL feel that Lee does well, but he's truly astounding. Most trumpet players exposed to Brownie's short career in the 50s took on his style.

There's more great Lee on Moanin' and A Night In Tunisia by Art Blakey, as well as his own Cornbread.

Who is he?

It's really hard for me to try and describe him so.....

The brain-damaged electro-funk of Gary Wilson was new wave when the label was still mainly used to categorize punk acts with a sweet tooth for pop. Completely ahead of his time, Wilson used chilly synthesizers and bizarre sound effects and samples to tell his odd tales of love and sex. In 1977, Wilson recorded his debut LP You Think You Really Know Me in the basement of his parents' house in Endicott, NY. Home tapings started becoming prevalent in the '90s, but in the late '70s, Wilson was an indie pioneer, releasing a strange lo-fi record that eventually influenced Beck. Moreover, the LP inspired Olympia, WA, college radio station KAOS to spin underground artists, helping to cultivate a taste for non-commercial music that later gave birth to K Records and Sub Pop. Legendary Seattle DJ Stephen Rabow even presented one of Wilson's gigs in the early '80s. Wilson toured with his group, the Blind Dates, at times covering their bodies on-stage with flour. But the masses were not ready for Wilson's eccentricities. Wilson did not release a follow-up to You Think You Really Know Me; nevertheless, the album's cult status grew as years passed. Finally, in 2003, Motel Records released Forgetten Lovers, a follow-up album of sorts assembled from Wilson's previously unreleased material, rarities, and vinyl-only pressings from 1973 to 1982, further solidifying Wilson's stance as the unsung hero of indie rock. The new record Mary Had Brown Hair was released in 2004 on Stones Throw.

I've been listening to lots of Christmas stuff on the radio. And Phil Collins. Every radio station around here plays Phil Collins, Phil Collins and more Phil Collins in the run-up to Phil Collins Hour.

Electric Warrior makes plenty of fun.

I listened to a lot of Bill Evans today, because of Robert Crumb.

Serena-Maneesh - Serena-ManeeshI tend to lose interest in it at times, but all in all, I've really enjoyed that album. "Drain Cosmetics" is the perfect opener.

Tenacious D - Tenacious D
Neu! - Neu! 75

And to add to the T. Rex discussion, Electric Warrior has one of the most appropriate covers ever.

Everywhere I go I hear Christmas music, but I have yet to hear "Fairytale of New York" anywhere in public. I'm convinced no one knows it in Canada.

They hate America I think. Anything with New York in the title is a no-no; they just ally themselves with the terrorists and listen to happy ramadan tunes instead.

i saw DEP, BTBAM, and HORSE a couple weeks ago... it was good, but people tell me DEP's old singer was better. I'm a tool, so i'll blindly agree with them.

The day after i went to seed the appleseed cast. a band called piglet (they were kinda "instrumental-indie-math-post-something-core" or whatever you wanna call it) opened up for them and kind of stole the show. so i've been listening to alot of them lately, along with volta do mar and ghosts and vodka... as well with appleseed cast.
