The score for this movie really delightful. Very fitting and has a vital impact on the general mood of the entire film. It was a very enjoyable film. When I saw it in the theatre the audience consisted of me and two elderly couples. It was quite odd.

I think I'll go grab A Cast Of Thousands from upstairs.
A good damn call. I just listened to Asleep In The Back, though. I was reading Mojo last night, and they called AItB one of the best British rock albums of the last 20 years, and they said that CoT was a weak release, scrambling to catch up! I couldn't understand it! I always liked CoT better, and not that I think AItB is bad (it's one of the few records in my library with a 5/5 rating, as are the other two Elbow records), but best British rock albums of the last 20 years? I don't know. I'd certainly say that about CoT though.

Meanwhile, they gave the new one a bloody 3. Ridiculous.

br3ad_man
10-27-2005, 07:43 PM
I've only heard the first two. How does the new one compare?

JonM
10-27-2005, 07:48 PM
Awesome. It hasn't had as much time to grow on me as CoT, but it probably will. Imagine the emotional high points of CoT, the furious, crashing, exploding crescendos. One of my favorite things about that record is how those were the peaks and the pace and emotion of the record started right in the middle and slowly built up and then slid back down and went all the way to the opposite end and then slowly came back up. On the new one, we start off closer to the top, and it never goes down as far. So you get a lot of the power of the second record, just as fully, but not as much of the variation, which may have given some of the peaks of CoT their power.

I'll clarify if that was too hippie for you.

Tell me about Orchid, I've been meaning to hear them for ages. I'm listening to CTTS this morning, I'm in a good mood for it.

I find their singer more intense than most, and their cd's cover art's are quite groovy too. Cool band.

Avant-garde/jazz masterpiece? I don't think that's a very accurate description.

Fast and furious noise-punk with Deerhoof-ish girl vocals. That's what I thought of Cell Scape anyways.

Bruce Haack - Electric Lucifer

Electronic music pioneer creates homemade musical devices to tell epic tales with much Judeo-Christian imagery. Mostly terribly goofy, but there are some really cool sounds here. I first saw it mentioned in an interview with Madlib and it definitely sounds like something he'd sample. I spent a while looking for a band called Electric Lucifer, only to find out it was an album. Wacky synths, some funky bass lines, general oddness. C

Television Personalities - The Painted Word; Closer to God

I really like this band. Messy pop tunes, strong mod rock influences, a guy who tends to write horribly maligned lyrics and sings with a voice that makes Dylan sound like choir-boy at times. The Painted Word came out in '84 and sounds a bit like it. Very dour, depressing psychedelic stuff, typical post-punk and a few oddities thrown into the mix. I'm not fond of the album but there are a couple songs I absolutely love like, "A Sense of Belonging" and "The Girl Who Had Everything," and the best songs here might be better than anything I've heard the band do, which really isn't a lot. Paul Weller and Morrissey reviewed "A Sense of Belonging" on some British music show or something back then and panned it basically. D

Closer to God is much more accessible. It's not better because it's more accessible but it helps. I really wanted to buy Priviledge instead of this but they didn't have any more copies so I settled. There are some really nice tunes, the production is superior to other TVP releases I've heard but (this was a '92 release) there's some hokum ****, too. Happens when a band has been around for over a decade I suppose. "Razor Blades and Lemonade," "Honey for Bears," and the title track stood out in the couple of listens I've given it so far. B-

They owe Albini alot of credit though because he basically created that "Original Pixies Sound". With their later albums you can actually hear what they really sounded like, they were a far more lush sounding band which wasn't captured on Surfer Rosa.

That's not the arguement, who remembers Come on Pilgrim anyway? Unless you're a fan no one does. SR is the album people remember and it's Albini's production that put it on the map. The producers of CoP along with the members of the Pixies were well aware of the stripped down sound that Albini and various other bands were coming up with in the 80s. This can be said because of their late enterence into the Indie world and the diverse and sonic sound that was popping up in Boston or had already occured. Also as we well know the Pixies reached the sound they were looking for later on in their career after they were done trying to emulate other bands that came before them.

I wouldn't say the Pixies ever really had a distinct sound.

Surfer Rosa has the most consistent feeling though.

I think that's why I always liked it better as an album. I think Doolittle has some better songs, but Surfer Rosa as a whole just feels right.

Fantômas - The Director's Cut

When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet
And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
And your dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for
And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go
And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try

I got Think Differently Music: The Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture today. It's ok. Ras Kass damages every other MC on there. But the Del tha Funkee Homosapien/Aesop Rock track is pretty cool, too.
