I bought this album about 6 months ago and at first listen I thought it was crap. Everytime I listen to it I like it more and more. Right now I would probably give this album a 4.5/5. Family Affair is seriously one of the greatest R&B/Soul tracks ever.

I think I'm finally ready to open up to Sonic Youth. I hated them the first time I heard them, and wanted nothing to do with their music. Then a few months ago I had the urge to hear "Teenage Riot" for some odd reason, and found myself enjoying it. Now I'm listening to Daydream Nation, with intent to let it play the whole way through, and I think I'm going to appreciate this band on some level.

I am really diggin Slint lately. First of all, post-rock with vocals is nice, but post-rock with spoken word vocals by a guy that can actually write a damn poem is wonderful. They've also got the same thing I like about Bark Psychosis: a strong rhythm section. School me on the High-Back Chairs. I've heard the name thrown around.
The album is great. High-Back Chairs are kind of like power pop with a dash of post-hardcore(weird combonation, but it works). In the past I've tried finding a backstory on them and didn't have much luck, but I think that Jeff Nelson was their drummer. They only released this and Curiosity & Relief(EP) which is a shame. Yeah, I've probably heard over half the album already thanks to my stupid modern rock radio station, so I'm not in the market for the real deal.

Anyway, The Fall of Troy is a neat band. Too bad they have to be on the Warped Tour with Fall Out Boy, which is similarly named but not at all as talented (except at getting mass appeal I guess). But it would be quite a tough crowd if TFoT were to be called onstage at Warped by an emcee with a malfunctioning mic:

Slowdive...they're pretty mellow, My Bloody Valentine-esque, with quiet vocals on top of guitar noise. I guess you'd call them noise rock, or shoegaze.

I'm not good with descriptions, but they're really good.

And to continue with the questions...what are Presidents of the USA like? I've heard a song by them, called Peaches, which was kinda fun, but i never checked an album or anything. Any worth getting?

OrbDragon
07-30-2005, 08:56 AM
I like MBV...so I think I'll check Slowdive out.

The Presidents of the USA ae a fun altrock/pop rock band from Seattle, that write goofy, catchy tunes. They really have a cool sound, sometimes they play with guitars and bass guitars that only have two or three snares, to add to their quirkiness. "Peaches" is they most wellknown song....but "Dune Buggy", "Kitty" and "Volcano" are also nice tunes...they recently came back together but their new material isn't as good as the stuff they released before they broke up.

Bukowski
07-30-2005, 09:02 AM
Sounds fun, i'll try and get my hands on one of their pre break-up releases.

OrbDragon
07-30-2005, 09:11 AM
I downloaded "Some Velvet Morning" and I wasn't too impressed...it sounds kind of stagnant. One of that traits that I like about My Bloody Valentine (especially on the album Loveless) is that the melody seemed to move slightly out of control at times...as if the sound was alive and had it's own consciousness. That was part of it's beauty. Then again...it's had to fathom that the song I heard is Slowdive's best...so I'm going to down some more stuff.

Mad World. Donnie Darko. That guy.
Oh yeah that's a cool version. Thanks.

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld

this kind of sucks. I'm disappointed.

I only heard one song from them, and I loved it.

Fugazi - The Argument
The Futureheads - S/T (after Nacho saying it was good the whole way through I decided to listen again. And he's right. :p )

First listens of:
KT Tunstall - Eye To The Telescope - I was expecting this to be really crap but I'm over half way through and it's surprisingly good. (4/5)
Anthony And The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now (4-4.5/5)

Next up is Brendan Benson - The Alternative To Love - I'm excited about this album as I downloaded two songs and absolutely loved them.

I only have The Mysterious Production Of Eggs. It's definitely worth checking out.

I tried to download that twice from the YSI thread and each time it got to 95% and then 'completed' itself. My pc sucks :upset:

Everyone should download Vinny Miller's little single for the last song, "Bagged And Tagged". It's gorgeous. His music is mostly acoustic singer/songwriter stuff. But, this debut 7" is much more eclectic than his full release is.

My bands lately
1. Muse
2. Dredg
3. At the Drive In

Very odd mix... but all so great.

Much thanks to the excellent TalkingHead for recommending/uploading Xinlisupreme. They are an awesome Japanese post rock/noise rock band.

Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow
Same.

I'm only on my first listen through but I'm very glad that the Banhart is experimenting within his realm of style. It's still distinctly him, but the changes are evident and a very solid progression from where he was.

Since my last post I've listened to Talkin' Honky Blues again, a bunch of random stuff, and then Elliott Smith's Roman Candle.

I'm in love with the one 20 Minute Loop song I've heard. I need to get Yawn + House = Explosion.

I finally got Roman Candle. Elliott's best work pixies? C'mon.

I think it's great, but not his best. XO still holds that place for me, but I haven't got the self-titled album or Either/Or yet.

I'm still lacking Roman Candle, but I definitely view Either/Or as easily his best. Easily.

Either/Or and XO are the best Elliott albums. Roman Candle has ups and downs, and those other two really just have ups.

Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Vespers, Op. 37." I namecheck this piece all the time, because it's really beautiful stuff. Choir music doesn't get enough love.

Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol 2 (4/5)

He uses the line structure 'My x is y, like z' way too often, and some of his politics and theories are a little questionable. Still, a really really good album.
