The Violent Femmes - The Violent Femmes (4/5)

Interesting record. The lyrics are really immature and selfish, but it's incredible how many of them I really relate to. Plus, it really reminds me of The Doors. But better.

Kaiser Cheifs - Employment (3/5)

Great singles, decidedly average album.

R Kelly - Trapped In The Closet (5/5)

 Easily one of the most ludicrous, hilarious things ever conceived. I nearly wet myself when one of the parts finished with '....and it was a man!' Utter, utter genius. But damnit, we need a Part 6 where Kelly shoots the policeman!!!

I also dug my Tori Amos collection on random after hearing her new single on the TV (Sweet The Sting). It sounds nothing like the other stuff I have by Tori, but damn, it's good. (I think I'm fast becoming a fanboy here.)

I've only heard the new one, it's bloody great. I have it downloaded, thanks to Iai. I haven't been able to find any of their albums around here.

Zappa
07-18-2005, 12:22 AM
I decided I didn't want to download the thing before it was available to purchase, since I just make a rule against downloading unauthorized (as in, not up on an official website) pre-release material.

Now that it's available, I decided to just shell out for it after all. I've been patient.

Little Man being Erased
07-18-2005, 12:34 AM
Yeah, I'm usually the same, I never like to hear something before its release, I rarely download entire albums at all. But if it's something that's not available in Australia or really difficult to find, I consider downloading.

Zappa
07-18-2005, 12:36 AM
I prefer to download things from the 90s or earlier (because it saves a lot of money, and the people involved with actually making the record probably don't need the money, due to death etc), and I like to purchase releases from the past 4+ years.

Why Amazon.co.uk?

How unbelievable was Les Savy Fav? I almost caught a sweat-sponge.

Haha! Yeah, Tim Harrington is a complete madman. Loved their performance. I particularly got into the Hold Steady. I just love their music and later in the day I had the opportunity to meet and talk with their frontman, Craig Finn. Asked him a question about a small aspect of Separation Sunday's word usage and concept. And of course told him how much I enjoyed his set and his work.

It struck me as odd that I could see all these major players at Intonation walking around and no one had a clue. I saw Jason Molina, Craig Finn, and Jesse from DFA1979 just walking around the merch/record tables. Surreal.

asymm
07-18-2005, 07:03 PM
I actually asked a friend why there were no band members walking around the grounds before/after their sets. I didn't notice a single one. It would have been awesome to have met Tim Harrington or Jamie Stewart.

Just odd luck then I guess. Yeah, meeting those two would be amazing. I'd particularly like to meet Jamie Stewart. I was very surprised/amused at his performance. He hardly touched Fabulous Muscles and it's by far his most listened to record. Plus he ignored the crowd's wishes! While I was satisfied hearing the La Foret material, my friends were annoyed and didn't like that material nearly as much.

So far today I've listened to:

Minus the Bear - Highly Refined Pirates
Not exceedingly excellent, but enjoyable enough for a listen every now and then.
3.5/5

Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
I like this album quite a lot, but I think it still needs to grow on me a little further. I have also discovered that this album needs to be listened to at high volume.

I completely agree. It's just a conceptually watered down independent-looking film aimed for the less-than-young-adults. It hinted and desired to present substance and meaning, but that was mostly done through weak dialogue. I thought that specifically was a cop out way to add 'depth' to your writing. Don't get me wrong, it was a cute film with a few high school poignant moments, but it's not the end all be all.

I think the band is rather bland and boring, and the singer sounds horrible most of the time, especially live. They just sound really weak, and his vocals are always high in the mix, which doesn't make sense to me.

There we go. Thanks for explaining your view now. It's always interesting to hear oppositional views to my own. I think the flair of them for me is most definitely Craig Finn's lyrical content and his aggressive approach to the music. As you pointed how the vocals being high in the mix, well I think that is something essential considering their importance to the overall sound. As I can see your point on being 'bland' and 'boring' but for me I find their take on traditional 'bar' rock extremely interesting with the conceptual meaning and purpose behind it, the contrasting vocals to instruments, and of course the addition of the keyboard really does it for me :)

!!! - !!!
necrophagist - epitaph
fly pan am - ceux qui inventent n'ont jamais vécu
make believe - shock of being

!!! is becoming one of my favorite bands. good dance-punk and fun to listen to. necrophagist is technical death metal with pristine recording... practically mechanical sounding.
