Devin Davis- Lonely people of the world, unite!!!

This album just floors me everytime I listen to it. It's filled with saxaphones, pianos and backup singers (Every instrument was recorded by Devin Davis, btw). The whole album is around 35 minutes, (most songs are around 3 minutes long) which means there is rarely a dull part in any song, and can go from a 60's brit invasion sound to Pink Floyd psychedellia too pop punk in an instant. The lyrics are another standout thing on this album, dealing with everything from vikings to pirates to a turtle that helps a flightless bird.
This is one of the best records I've heard all year, and I'm pretty sure I already know whos going to be on the top of my 'best album of 2005' list.

Not really. When I first got the internet I went by the name Sephiroth, which I quickly found out was a pretty easy way to have the piss ripped out of you, so I changed it. Iai was basically the first thing I came across that sounded half-decent. I know it's another reference to Final Fantasy, but I forget exactly what.

That Magic Numbers album is one of the most distinctly average albums I've heard in a while. I mean, it's definitely not bad... it's a good album, but at no point does anything on there exceed "just good". And it all sounds a bit samey to me.

I've been listening to a lot of REM's 90's stuff latley. Particularly there last three albums. Including the latest, Around The Sun. I just keep hearing stuff in those albums I overlooked before. I really love New Advantures in Hi -Fi, too. Vastly underrated, IMO. I don't care much for Monster, and am just plain worn out on Out of Time. So I'm not listening to those. But the others just have me hooked. And of course, Automatic for the People. Which is a perfect record....

JohnXDoe
06-12-2005, 02:12 AM
New Adventures in Hi-Fi is underrated, but it's their last good album. Monster was pretty weak, but nowhere near as bad as the awful last three.

You know, I tended to agree with that until recently. But I gave the new one a fighting chance and then started listening to Up again, which led me back to Reveal. And something just clicked for me. Glad it did because now I can enjoy them again, lol. It was a tough go for awhile. I just took a listen to Reveal and am loving it . I don't know what happened? But I'm glad it happened nonetheless :thumb:

Dream Theater - Octavarium
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (5.1)

I've loved Yoshimi for so long that I'm not sure why it took me this long to get the 5.1 mix. The experimentation with multiple channels makes the album such a more absorbing experience.

Aeaon
06-12-2005, 01:56 PM
That's what I think of REM too. Their 80s material is absolutely great, and their first 5 WB albums were good as well. Up and Reveal on the other just bore me to death and Around The Sun is very weak as well.

JohnXDoe
06-12-2005, 02:08 PM
I tried really hard to get into them, since I'm a massive R.E.M. fan, but there's something about them that doesn't do it for me. I just prefer the more sparse, minimal stuff they were doing in the early 80's.

Oh man, that's great stuff! Good thing about a band like REM is you really can pick and choose because of there long history and diverse output. Murmur, Reckoning, and Fables of the Reconstruction are brillant records. I can only imagine how original and fresh they sounded at the time they came out. And they manage to rock. Life's Rich Pageant is most likely my fave, although I know they took heat at the time for going with a mainstream producer and turning up the electric guitars. But no matter, I love it. Document as well. Green is my least favorite. But that's a small gripe considering the good.

I think it's Micheal Stipe that is attracting me to the new stuff. His lyrics, vocal style, and perspective just always seems to be evolving, and at the moment I've become very intrigued by what he's been doing since Up. It's like rediscovering the band through him. Really enjoying them and myself doing it, too. :)

Aeaon
06-12-2005, 03:08 PM
Yes, his drumming is really good. That's proabably what makes the newer REM so dull. The drum machines don't necessarily make them sound as good as the other albums.

I definitely applaud them for constantly reinventing their sound and challening themselves - I doubt I'd like them as much if they had released thirteen Murmurs - but there's just something lacking about the new albums that doesn't grab me like the first few do. Maybe it's the absence of Bill Berry, who is one of the best drummers of all time.

Yes, his drumming is really good. That's proabably what makes the newer REM so dull. The drum machines don't necessarily make them sound as good as the other albums.

The loss of Berry hurt. I think perhaps they didn't feel like the same band after he left. I've never quite forgiven him as a fan for doing so, either. But what can you do, ya know. REM has certainly been a different band since his departure. At least on record. I saw them the last time they swung by Los Angeles and they were just incredible. The same great live band they have always been. Perhaps after all these years they really are just about pleasing themselves now? Which I guess is something they've kind of earned. I just really found myself missing them, quite honestly. I hadn't given the newer records much consideration, either. So i started listening. If you guys wanna give it another shot I would suggest starting with Reveal and the more accessible tracks on Up. And then move on to Around The Sun. Maybe just listen passively at first. You might start to hear something you can connect with.

etc.

My brother recently gave me his old computer, which has my old stash of mp3s. Some of bands I've half-forgotten about, like The Bees and De Facto. I'm especially diggin' the rediscovery of The Bees.

Today I dug the new Shpongle, heavily. It's unreal. That's now two 5-star albums released on June 13th. 2005 is absolutely owning so far. Best year this decade, easily.

Did you actually purchase the album? It doesn't seem obtainable here in the states.

Have you found/gotten their demo yet? I've been scavaging for them on soulseek for awhile and havent found anything by them.

Lately I have been listening to Ester Drang. heavily. They are a nice dreamy post-rock-esque band.

Today was an especially gangsta day for me

I listened to Mobb Deep, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC, De La Soul & Compton's Most Wanted.

"It's Tricky!" - man that song is in my head now.

I've been listening to all sorts of music lately. None of the bands are particularly new, just as awesome as they come. Some of my favorite songs/artists as of now are:

The Decemberists - "July, July"
The Arcade Fire - "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)"
Rilo Kiley - "Always"
Spoon - "Sister Jack"
Dashboard Confessional - "Bend and Not Break"
Bright Eyes - "Bowl of Oranges"
The Shins - "New Slang" <-- especially wonderful
Death Cab for Cutie - "Blacking Out the Friction"
The Postal Service - "Sleeping In"
The Thrills - "big sur"
The Von Bondies - "cmon cmon"
The Ataris - "teenage riot"
Wilco - "Kamera"

Sadly, no. I went on a few psytrance forums, and the only people who have actually managed to buy it so far are people lucky enough to live in Japan.

I looked at all the usual sources and nowhere was stocking it. I didn't break my back looking for it, though, since money's pretty tight for me right now.
