well.. someone did a song they already knew.. and its not counted.. so
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Sleep Is Wrong
Unusual intro, the intstruments are playing some wierd stuff, sounds a bit like King Crimson. A Marilyn Manson like voice is whispering something, and a frogman is croaking a bit of stuff.
At 1:00 the guitar starts playing some strange lead riff, drums are there too.
Moves into a industrial sounding/distorted slow bit, with feedback and strange sounds.
2:00 a guy starts vocalising over it.. sounds like Korn's signer when he does his heavy stuff, even the guitar sounds a bit like Korn, but this is so much stranger.
Barbershop (bup bup bup) bit comes next, a woman singing "when I grow up, I'm never going to die" An unusual bassline underlies it. Then the strange guitar from 1:00 is back playing the same thing. There's a pause in music for about 10 seconds, then a little more guitar before it goes back to sounding like Korn. "SLEEP IS WROOONG!"
4:50.. theres a quieter bit, a guy rambling on, the guitar rambles on too, quietly. The female vocals are loud here "When I grow up.." it builds up and up into some chaotic circusy piece of breaths and "uhh"s, some singing and some strange keyboard-END.
Well.. it ends even more abruptly than my review. How very weird and interesting, and possibly stupid.. what can I say? I will keep it to get more used to it.. for now 8/10.

Right, sorry about the wait, but this is my first Other FL in a while and..well, it's also Miocene.
I own and love both Refining the Theory and Cellular Memory, so I'm quite looking forward to hearing this.
Miocene - The Fall - 8:31
Okay, I've listened to this many times over the past day or so (not standard Forced Listening practice, I know, but I couldn't help myself), and I don't think I'm going to do a play-by-play (and not only because it's 8 minutes long).
Basically, this song seems to be an amalgamation of what they did on Refining the Theory, and what they did on the Cellular Memory EP. It's longer than anything on Refining the Theory (except Free Reign, I suppose, but that doesn't really count), but not as long as the longest tracks on the EP. This is probably completely insignificant, but it struck me as a nice representation as a the combination of elements from the other releases.
It starts off much more in the vein of Refining the Theory; guitars playing with a tone similar to the very strange tone of that album. That was one thing that kind of threw me off in first listening to them, their guitar tones always seemed really strange.
Anyway, the first five and a half minutes of the song could almost have come straight off of Refining the Theory, except that it sounds more..refined. I'm not sure how, the general playing just strikes me as better. Vocals come in around 0:30 seconds..they were another aspect that originally threw me. At first it seemed to me that the guy shouldn't really be a vocalist, but as I listened more and more, the more I realised he fit. Anyway, he's on good form here, and has some of his best vocal work a couple of minutes in. I never understood the Maynard-plagiarising accusations levelled at him (though I can understand the Tool-plagiarism shots at Refining the Theory). The only way that I think he's comparable to Maynard is that both, due to some similarity in their delivery, end up having their words tattooed on my mind, whether I strive for this or not. They don't actually physically sound all that similar, though.
One of the song's (few) problems crops up about just after 1:00, and that is this part where the heavy riffing gives way to a mellower part, with some excellent light drumming and a great vocal performance. The problem is that for me it's the bext part of the song, and it's coming so early on makes the rest of the song, however good, seem pale in comparison.
The rest of this first half of the song is done in a loud, heavier, more aggressive style, before, around 5:30, breaking into something completely different. Something which, hopefully without pushing home this Refining the Theory/Cellular Memory cobination too forcefully, would have sounded at home as one of the songs on the EP. The last three minutes of the song feels more or less an extended drum'n'bass jam, just with the guitar playing some very cool, relaxed stuff over the top. At points it even approaches Squarepusher (a la Tetra-Sync) territory, just without the ridiculous bass.
9.5/10. It loses half a point, first for having that best bit so early on, and also because the ending seemed kind of weak. Other than that, an excellent song, which has somewhat re-whetted my already extremely whetted appetite for..well, anything they end up putting out.

Stevie Wonder - Villiage Ghetto Land
Eveyone knows who he is at least. Never heard a whole lot. Think I saw him on a Superbowl Halftime Show once.
Begins with synth-Strings from Stevie himself no doubt. Then vocals. Nice clear voice. I like it. The strings continue. The lyrics seem sort of ironic as far as the music goes. The strings and Stevie's voice continue. It gets sort of boring. I was hoping for some cool R&B. I'm sure this song carries a lot of meaning but I'm just not digging it.
It became fairly boring by the end. Sorry for the short review but there wasn't a whole lot there.

I've heard a lot about this band, but not actually much (or indeed anything) by them.
HORSE the Band - Pol's Voice - 4:00
Starts off with some very light percussion, and then what I expect will be a large part of the song - the computery noises - comes in. Vocals are in there straight away. Not energetic at all, though, just kinda enigmatic talking, though he's building to a yell. The yell does come, with recognisable, rather thick, chugging guitar. Basically the structure of the song seems to consist of this chugging guitar in the background, usually accentuated by beepy nintendocore stuff. Hmm.
Instruments cut out just before 1:20 for the vocalist to say something, and then there's a few seconds of just electronics, which sounds like cheesy 80s pop, but without the false cheer it was always injected with. So I quite like it, it's catchy. Only lasts a couple of seconds though, like I say, and then we're back into normal band, with vocals, with this computery noise imposed over the top.
Ah, now the guitars keep cutting out every few seconds, while the vocalist continues, over the top of that beepedy-beeping bit I liked before. Just before 2:00 (about 1:55), there's just a light drum beat with the electronics over thetop. Slowly joined by guitar and a very fast, nicely visible bass line. That bit was very cool.
Now there's a "running away!" vocal section, and this whole bit is much closer to normal hardcore, I think, just with backing electronics.
The rest of the song is just some galloping electronics (the rest of the instruments, though they're clearly still there, don't seem to be doing much all of a sudden) while the vocalist yells about silence, heh.
7.5/10 I think. Mixed feelings. Some bits were worth 9/10 on their own, but were brought down by other bits. I think it's a song (and a band) that I'll discover more in the more I listen.

William Shatner - Real
I know there's was a fairly big to-do about the new Shatner, a to-do I didn't really do. Anyways, what the hell.
From the welcoming that the album got, I assumed that Shatner's whole bouncy speech patterns went out the window. I mean, that was the worst shtick ever. Anyways, the title of the song seems apt. I never worry too much about how well someone sings, it's all about how it's presented and this song is presented well. The sung chorus makes all the difference on the song. I'm also assuming that he gets back up like this on the rest of the album? Helps immensely from breaking the monotony because, well, spoken word tends to be monotonous.
His backup has a real twang about him, as does the track itself. I dunno who it is, but it's not bad. The tune has a kind of pop country feel to it, which works well I think. The acoustic in the background plays a palatable riff and the keyboard sounds nice. Great solo around the two minute mark. I could probably see this track as being a complete miss if there weren't some intangible thing holding this all together.
Best part comes as the sung vocals and Shatner's rusty spoken word intertwine for that short moment before the song ends. I never heard his first "album" nor any of his other stuff really but I like this. Kind of poppy but I love pop so it works for me. I'll admit, I liked it better than I thought I would have; I may have to check out the other stuff at some point. His lyrics aren't some philosophic wetdream but they're not trying to be. Just a guy relating his life.

I have heard Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf before, but I have never heard this song.
Starts off with a cool intro, with different samples mixed together. Then the bass and beat comes in. Charizma is a talented rapper, with a good flow. Very smooth delivery. This song is great to nod your head too.
Little bridge with some more samples in the background.
The beats comes back in, and the second verse starts. More great rapping, over a nice beat.
I really dug this track. I think this is something that even people who aren't rap fans could enjoy. Great lyrics, rapping, and a cool beat

Sage Francis - Masturbate Your Brain
Wow. this guy can rap. It starts with some distorted guitars which had me excited for a minute, but it quickly breaks into a different beat, containing a double bass and nice drums. The chorus has a cool piano run in it. This guy's obviously quite talented, he can string about 10 seconds of rapping together without breathing, and his diction is top notch (that is, you can understand most of his words) the only gripe that I have with it was that it's too repetitive (the bass hardly changed during the chorus, and the only other instrument was the piano for the short run it does). The change at 2:20 is pretty cool. The shortness of the piece prevent the repetitiveness from getting too annoying. Overall a pretty cool track, I just wished they would include that guitar

Squarepusher - Lambic 9 Poetry
I have never heard of this band before.
It starts off very laid back, with a nice mellow bass line. I like it so far. Then the drums kick in , and it sounds as is the drums are too loud compared to everything else in the song. The drumming itself is fine, but it doesn't seem to go anything else. It just seems like the drumming is in a different style then everything else.
It's hard to get past the drumming, but I like everything that is going on in the background. All very melodic. The song slowly starts to build. It sounds better once the volume picks up.
The outro is cool, the tempo has increased and it's very interesting to listen too.
Overall, I thought it was pretty good. The drumming threw me off in the begining, but the longer the track went, the more I liked it.

I'm a big fan of Endtroducing, and a fledgling fan of Radiohead.
UNKLE - Rabbit in Your Headlights - 6:20
Starts off with just piano, playing a nice, slow melody. I like piano, so this is going well so far.
Yorke comes in fairly soon (about 20 seconds in), just singing over the piano. A relatively quiet drum beat comes in, slowly building in volume. A tone builds, then suddenly cuts out. I hope the entire song doesn't just consist of Yorke singing over this piano and percussion, with occasional noises; not that it would be a bad song, but it wouldn't give me much to write about.
Ah. Music more or less all cuts out, except for a catching (like a skipping records) beat for a few seconds, and the piano returns shortly, playing a slightly different tune, with a vocal sample, talking about death, I think; very Shadow.
Around 4:19 now. Lots of samples building and washing around, with Yorke wailing over the top. Good stuff, just hard to think what to write about. If I start to describe each individual sample, I'd be here all day. Just suffice to say it's good.
Almost everything cuts out sometime around 5:20, and piano quickly comes back in, shortly followed by a different, slightly more interesting, drum beat. This all fades out slowly, and the song finishes on big swishy noises.
8.5/10, I think. It was really good, but not all that good.

Birdsongs of the Mesozoic - Centrifuge
It starts off with some heavier sounding piano chords, with lighter piano playing on top of it. The drums come in, and the piano plays a beautiful solo. It sounds very much like classical right there. Some more chords, and more solos on the piano. Very nice and melodic so far.
A breif fill on sitar, I think. It sounds cool, it adds to the whole mood of the song.
Back to the chords, and then the sitar comes back in. Wow this is nice, a flute is now added to the mix. Very beautiful. The instruments are all used very well, it's not overwhelming or anything.
The flute is softly playing over the piano, and sitar.
More chords on the piano, and it ends with the flute coming back in and slowly closing out the song.
Very, very cool track. I had never heard this band, and I would definantly listen to more by them.

OK, Ghost - Piper
Starts with cool as flute and classicial guitar. I like the ambient sounds in the background too. This goes on for a while, but it's ok, because it's very cool. There's some feedback noise then it goes into the rock riff. It's good stuff. There's some vocal harmonies to go with the riff. There's some piano with the vocals now, it accompanies the vocals well. I like the guy's voice, it's quite fitting. The chorus is a bit heavier, but still pretty easy listening. There's a nice solo at about the 3 min mark. The bridge goes into 6/8, and adds this accordian kind of sounding thing, it's great. It kind of just choruses off until it ends. There's a cool keyboard solo though near the end.
I found it good background music, I was constantly drifting off and doing other stuff. A pretty good listen, 8.5/10

Kraftwerk - Spacelab
Theres, a rising whole tone scale played on some soft piano which gets faster and faster to start it off.
Then some synth chords and synth flute make a break between that and the next bit. Simple bass and constant drums with some light effects take it along. The synth chords and flute return, they sound good with it. Nice and ambient, but with a few solid sounds for the ears to latch onto.
It builds a little, with another synth line to counter what's already there. Very "spacey" sound indeed, but not all that futuristic. It has an 80's sound to it, maybe it is from then. An electronic voice says "space lab"... I wonder why...
It carries on much like this for a while, with some slight variations to keep it interesting.
From 3:50 some of it is harmonized and it sounds pretty good.. it goes on until about 5:30, when some annoying sound comes in, and the music fades out quickly to end it. Disappointing finish to that, it was going rather well.
Well.. yeah I liked that, I could zone out easily to it. It was pretty good for the small number of sounds and effects they used to make it. The space theme across was done well in my mind. The ending was the only let down for me. 8.5/10

Fagan - Dante
Starts off with some very atmospheric noises. A girl singer comes in, and she has a good voice. It all sounds very much like a dream. There is lots of nice melodic sounds in the background.
A piano comes in, and plays a soft little melody over the atmospheric music in the background.
The song picks up, and some drums come in. The singer begins to sing over the piano and atmospheric music. It sounds really chill. Very relaxing.
Some strings come in, and a guy singer begins to sing instead of the girl. He has a nice voice.
He starts to sort of rap, and I don't like that as much as the other stuff.
The song builds up to a climax, with a nice stringed instrument in the back soloing. I believe it's a violin.
It ends with the piano playing softly.
Very good song. I would listen to more from this group.

I myself am not much of a Dandy Warhols fan but I must say this song is proberly one of there best material I have ever herd from them. This song is very dark and gloomy mainly because of this electric like drone for the harmony and the vocals aswell are fantastic and suite the song very well. This song is proberly a bit long but I dont think if you listen to it you would not care because it is a great song and is suited for being long. Overall this song is the best song I have ever herd from the Dandy Warhols. Even though I have only herd a few of there songs I still think it is great compared to the songs I have herd. I would have to give this a great 10/10

Gyroscope - Take This For Granted
Lo fi guitar riff starts.. but it goes normal-fi, with a pop/punk/rockish sound. Sort of clean but powerful vocals. Simple sounding music here, the verse has some slightly ska guitar style. The chorus has some heavier guitar.
This is definitely JJJ material, quite uninspiring to me. Root note bass.. predictable structure.. nothing is exciting me.
At 1:45 however, the music comes right down. There is acoustic guitar, piano too I think. The singer does the chorus here in the acoustic setting, and I think this song would be much better if it was all like this.
It goes back to the heavier chorus style again, the acoustic part didnt last long sadly. And this ends soon after.
I don't have a short attention span, but in the 3:20 this song goes for, I got bored. The energy from live shows is probably the only thing that could interest me in this song.
To say there was anything bad about it is something else, I don't think I can. All the elements by themselves are fine, the combination and final product is simply generic, I'm completely unimpressed.

Going for another Manics song.
Wedding Parties Anything - A Tale They Won't Believe - 6:56
Expecting a bit of a difficult review here, since sea-shanty is basically another form of folk song, and folk songs often concentrate far more on lyrics and story-telling than musical prowess.
Anyway, starts off jaunty, upbeat; pretty much everything I expected from a folky song (I suppose it could have been the other side of folk, slow and mournful, but I thought it wouldn't be, what with being comedic). Nice bass; mostly just all well done, nothing special. Nice little instrumental touches (flourishes) in the background.
First refrain comes around 1:00, and it's a good one; speeds up, catchy, would be great to sing along with.
Okay, up to about 5:00 in, this is making for a pretty spartan review, since it's essentially a folk song - based almost purely on lyrics, and (since it's designed as, as blue says, a shanty) the frequent repetition of different parts (mostly the chorus, which has made up, with slight adjustments (as the number of travellers keeps dropping :)), about half the song so far. The instrumental aspect of it, though very cool and thoroughly, is similarly repetitive, since it's pretty much the point.
Still, at 5:00 it all changes up a bit. Vocals go away, and it's more purely instrumental; still building up on repetition, but with interruptions of less activity, and sometimes near-silence (bar some percussion). I like the addition of a bit of variety.
The vocals come in again just before 6:00. At this point, he's the last one left, I believe, of the six we started the story with, so let's see what happens...
He got away with it! No one believed him, the murdering bastard. Speaking of bastards, this verse rather cracked me up;
"Now he had been looking at me funny, sort of eyeing me for days,
And you would not need to be too bright to know that bastard's ways,
He was a sick man, he had murder in his heart.
But even bastards have to rest, and even bastards have to sleep
And when he was in the land of nod straight over I did creep,
and the axe that he had wielded now was mine!"
Anyway, 9.5/10. Practically perfect as a folk song; very good instrumentation, great lyrics, and damn funny as well. Thanks, good stuff (sorry for the poor review, but story-telling folk is hard to review).

Serge Gainsbourg - Melody (Extrait de Melody Nelson)
Hhhm, Frenchy like music, who can resist that?
Starts with acoustic bass, and drums.
And all of the sudden a man starts talking, in French.
A few seconds later a rockish guitar can be heard very far away on the background.
The bass is what keeps this song going.
I love French, I can’t speak it very well anymore, but it just sounds like poetry.
The dude could be swearing the entire song long, but It would still sound awesome.
At a certain stage, the bass starts playing some different stuff, at 2:45 someone turns the volume up, and the guitar comes a bit more to the foreground.
Ow, a string composition. Cool.
3:40 the guitar takes over, and a little soloing like parts goes on, ow no, it stops.
Very Arcturus like cello or double bass playing going on.
4:25 a solo of some sort,
And the vocalists still talks about, well I don’t know, but it sounds good.
:amaze:
I’ve been waiting for this the entire song, and he just says it: ‘Merde’
Awesome, what’s going on now is, guitaring and string stuff.
Very nice, the song is in an upbeat nnow, sounds a bit jazzy like.
6:10 breakdown, ow, after a few secs there is another voice introduced, a woman’s voice, with a lot of false air.
Instruments just playing easily, some chords on guitar, as it ends, and the vocalists makes some announcement, some more strings more bass, and the song really ends.
Cool, awesome

"The Gravel Road" from The Village soundtrack (I guess?)
I would have tried this earlier but classical music scares me. I wish I listened to more classical but I don't. And then I feel bad because I don't. So I stare at a wall.
Anyways, the song begins with violin and a piano. I wish I knew what the techniques are called or something because I don't know how to describe that. They hang together with hauntingly romantic interplay.
Around two minutes in, a ghostly swoon comes in. I have a hard time distinguishing different string instruments so I dunno what it was but it went away and it's just the piano and violin again. They start to pick up tempo near the four minute mark, racing together in one of those thematic build ups which are familiar to films. It was a pretty short piece, actually. Definitely sounds appropriate for a movie like The Village. I never saw it so I wouldn't really know but it evokes the right kind of mood for a M. Night Shamlanaramalama flick.
I liked it well enough but I'm no good with classical. Therefore, sucky review. :)

Os Mutantes - A Minha Menina
Excuse me for already knowing this song but the other yousendits won't working for me and I knew I would enjoy reviewing this song. If anything, this review should remind me to get more Os Mutantes material. :)
"A Minha Menina" Starts on a spanish man taking through a heavy delay effect. The way he laughs at the end always cracks me up. Next the acoustic guitar comes in still with the heavy delay effect giving it a dreamy swirly effect that I love. If that isn't enough they add a funky fuzz guitar/bass over the type to really trip things out.
The singing is great, I always find myself singing along and not caring what they're saying in spanish. "pah pah chu ah pah pah pah chu ah" great, great, party song. Even at two minutes in the song sounds fresh after not much moving around. Thirty seconds later a fuzzy guitar takes a solo, killer.
I neer realized how long this song was until this review I always thought it was around the two minute mark, crazy. And there you go the song is over, Bravo!

A Certain Ratio - Shack Up
What is post-punk anyway? Certainly not disco?
Well, that seems not to be the case, at least here.
The guitar that opens is very thin sounding, and has a 70's disco vibe to it. It pretty much revolves around this guitar riff in the verse, with a guy that cant sing too well saying a line, followed by someone else going "Shack up, Shack up"
Bass and drums add well to the feeling, but it's kind of boring me. Nothing much is happening. It repeats this quite a few times.
In the "chorus" there's just drums, bass, some other percussion, and some soft horn sound. It could make me want to hit the dance floor 30 years ago.. if I was into this music.
Next verse comes around, it sounds the same, the guitar sound is so thin and weak. Same pattern of vocal line, then "Shack Up"
What's meant to be happening here? Is this an old song, or just trying to sound old?
There's some trumpets that come in a bit into the song and play on and off until the end, but that's about it.
It just goes between verse and chorus.
Is post-punk generally like this? If so, I won't be listening to it often.
I hated the guitar sound, vocals were kind of bad too, but still better than the guitar. The rhythm section was alright, and there was a fair amount of vibe in there.
Overall, it just didn't interest me, and then some parts turned me away from it too.

The Red Paintings - Just People and Leaves
Haven't heard of these folks. The name sounds familiar though, that's why I picked 'em.
Gentle strumming opens the song, and the vocals kick in shortly thereafter. The singer's voice is very affable, very alternative-like, and there's this little effect thing going on with them in the begininng. The tune begins to pick up some speed and here come the drums and an instrument that I'm not quite sure of.
Gets more rocky at the chorus with an electric guitar crunch but then it breaks off and gets quiet for a moment. It builds back up with a flurry of multi-tracked vocals, only to slow down again for a little string interlude. Very progressive for what appeared at first glance to be a poppy little piece of alterna-rock. The energy that begins to pick up around the 3 minute mark is very infectious, everything is going at full tilt. The song ends with swirling, almost shoegazer-derived noises.
Very unpredictable song although it digested well. The instrumentation had plenty of spice and sudden changes around the little melody kept things moving. The lyrics seemed to be a bit suspect but the song itself did well in piquing interest. I think I'll be checking more into these guys.

The Rise - An Automated Response If You Will
I'll start by saying I never really liked Atari Teenage Riot.
I'll follow that up by saying this is much better. It starts with a fairly straight-forward electro beat and guitar riff. The vocals are yelped and punky, and treated in standard industrial fashion. The lyrics and the melody are really repetitive, but since I have no idea what the lyrics are, it doesn't really detract from the song.
About a minute in, there's a stop-time with acapella vocals. Then the song changes totally, switching to a more driving riff. A sample comes in around 1.45 (a man saying "These are the sounds", I think) as the vocals cut out. The drums slow down somewhat, sounding as if the song is coming to a climax. But then the original vocals return, and the song finishes with the sound of the record skipping.
I liked it. I probably won't get much replay value out of it, but it was cool.

Big Black - The Model
Alrite, so there were like 8 songs off that list I was interested in but this one finished fast and I've been meaning to look into Steve Albini's music more so there you go.
"The Model" Starts on a bass line and high treble drum machine like on Joy Division's "Disorder" sounds really cool right now. When the vocals come in a feedback and dirty guitar accompanys him. Something similiar to that happens on Fugazi's Smallpox Champion and Irionically I think Steve Albini produces that album In on the Kill Taker.
The noisy guitar melody continues for the rest of the song. The Vocals sound political but I'm not getting a very good idea of what he's saying. It seems like at this point of the song I kinda zone out and don't have alot to say but I'm still very much enjoying it. However I did notice that guitar a short rocking riff and then the song ended.

Starts out with drums, which I felt was a little ironic because throughout the song the drums stuck out to me as weak point. Bass and a kind of cool guitar comes in to play a country / alternative style through the song. The vocals are nice, switching some times to singing very high pitched.
The song was nice except the drums which I felt didn't fit and often came out over the rest of the song. However it all ended very strong so I will give the song a

The Bellrays - Zero PM (3:35)
I've heard of this band, and always meant to listen to them, but never really got around to it. Whell, I guess this is my chance...
Fades in with a repetitive, pulse-like bass line, acompanied by straightforward drumming, interspersed with funky guitar chord stabs. I like the tone, it has bite. "You're the devil because you aint no man," charges the singer, a female soul singer with tremendous power. She appears to be telling the story of a KKK member, we'll see how that develops.
Throughout the music changes little from the intro, however from "cos the world is a ghetto" - the chorus - the guitar begins to play some clean-ish arpeggios. The bass varies slightly, playing a brief melodic riff. It's clear the lyrics are about racism, I'd already assumed the singer was black, and I suppose this confirms it. She seems to be venting at all the various racists she's come across in her days. Good lyrics, too.
At 1;56, after the third chorus, the punk part comes in. Tempo picks up, regular drum fills set the heart racing, the guitar plays a punk riff straight out of the Stooges' handbook. Singer begins to scream - ****, she's good. This section then moves into lead guitar break reminiscent of the same band, before returning to the punk sequence. Repeat of the verse and chorus, with some blues-leads behind, and we fade out.
I must say that was breathtaking. The first time through, I wasn't so impressed, but the second time converted me. The dynamic is superb - very well done. 9/10.

Opening is kinda femine, probably a girl singing, I don't like that too much
Then it gets kinda songish, then the guitar thingy, then more talking, then starts to sound a lot like alkaline trio, then sounds kinda sublime-ish, diggin it, then more alkalinism(chorus I guess), then weak guitar solo, a good thing compared to no guitar solo or a nirvana solo, chorus again, energy build up, repitition, big energetic part, enegetic outro and its finished.
I give it a 7.9/10 out of 10, it's better than a lot of other stuff but not really my cup of tea

haha oh man... i've always heard about Zappa being an excellent musician/composer and such so i sure wasn't expecting this. Am i saying the song was bad? No, i really enjoyed listening to it. It's just really hard to put the lyrical content and comedic shrieks together with my preconceived notion of Frank Zappa. lol...im still laughing.

heh...lyrical content aside, this was still a pretty cool song. The instrumentation was nothing too impressive. Theres some cool wah on the guitar and the bass is pretty prominent throughout the whole song.
Ahah and i love the outro...with the keys played in unison with his weird singing.

Anyone mind if I dib with a view to do it in a few hours? I'm in college now.
Okay, I'm home now. Give me a few minutes.
Buckethead - Unrestrained Growth
Well, the only Buckethead I actually knew before this was stuff I'd heard in guitar magazines. From what I remember, it was in a Matias Ekhlund vein. Anyway, I usually hate guitar instrumentals that aren't be Jeff Beck, but I remember quietly enjoying what I heard of him.
*patiently waits for download to finish*
Opens with Buckethead playing some pretty standard, bluesy, Hendrix-lite guitar over a squelchy faux-industrial bassline and simple drums. Continues in this manner for a good minute and a half.
Eventually the drums pick up the pace, and the bassline changes. Still essentially a typically boring instrumental guitar piece though.
Some real bass gets added to the synths a bit later, as Buckethead does some Johnny Greenwood-esque killswitch trickery. There's a few Ekhlund-isms in this part. (I know that's spelt wrong, by the way.) Still pretty boring.
This is 8 minutes long? Ouch.
Keyboard solo. Joy. I'm 5 minutes in now, and not enjoying it in the slightest.
And it ends with no variation. Well, any interest I once had in Buckethead is now gone.
Really not my thing. Sorry.
2/10.

My experience with Kraftwerk is limited to listening to the first track of The Man-Machine (The Robots, which is good), before it kinda got lost in the midsts of the thirteen other albums I purchased at the same time, along with Bill Bailey's Part Troll Kraftwerk-imitating closer. I'm much more familiar with Big Black's cover of The Model though, as I own and love Songs About ****ing, so it'll be interesting to see how it measures against it.
Kraftwerk - The Model - 3:43
Okay, starts off with what is, I suppose, the main riff. I hesitate to call it a riff because it's all electronic, but you know what I mean. It's a pretty catchy riff, and one of the ones I remember most (albeit in the grinding, slightly industrial punk sound of Big Black) from Songs About ****ing. The vocals are clean, unlike both "The Robots" and Big Black's version of this song, which means I can make out what is being said a lot more easily. It's about a model..
Not sure how much I can say here, so far. There's two layers of electronic beats; one lower and repetitive, and one a bit higher and twinkly - the kind you'd make a "wah-wah" vocalisation for - and it's this second one which changes, experiments, builds on the main riff of the song; solos, I suppose you could say. Prime example of this goes from about 1:40 to 2:35 (had to check back for the times, as I was a little too enthralled at the time itself to notice), before another verse about this model.
The song fades out when the high notes gets higher and sustains itself for a long time, and it's the lower one which comes to the fore in terms of dynamics, playing out on the song's main melody.
8/10, I think. Good song, though inevitably I'm comparing it to Big Black's version, which I think I prefer.

Beck - Girl
Okay I decided to do this "Summer Girls" song becuase it sounds like Beck and it's way too fackin catchy to resist.
Alright so it starts on a dance analog electic beat. It's really poppy but in a total Beck way. I've only been listening to Odelay for a couple of days and I can already tell a Beck song when I hear it.
At Twenty seconds in the guitar comes in with Beck singing. Tis a magical moment kind of like in The Outkast song "Hey Ya" With the acoustic guitar and andre 3000 ahhhhhhh. Beck's singing is ace, it makes the song stand out so much. Hear comes the chorus "Heeeeyyyy I Saw that girrrllll" haha awesome. It has a very heavy Beach Boys Vibe. It's all in those back round vocals.
After The second chorus we get an acoustic guitar solo with a catchy dance beat. I almost feel guilty for liking the dance beat so much. This leads back into one more chorus and the song ends with an echo chamber effect looping back and forth. Oh man I'm going to listen to this at least twenty more times. If this isn't the right song I'm going to kill myself.

Here's the Magazine Yousendit.
.....I've just downloaded it from Soulseek after searching for 45 minutes.
:(
Magazine - I'm A Party
Starts pretty cool. Angular guitars, simple drums, synths. Really rhythmic, but in a jerky way. Like Talking Heads.
The chorus is a little bit of a shock. I was expecting something bigger and more blatant, but it's got a Kinks kind of feel to it. Maybe a hint of 60s girl groups, too, which is echoed in the backing vocals of the second verse.
For the second chorus, a saxophone comes in, then takes a solo. Great stuff. That's a nice touch, I like it.
The song brings itself to a close with vocables from the backing singers, and the singer repeating 'I know it hurts you' in a David Bryne-meets-Dave Davies type voice. Basically, it sounds to me like Talking Heads making out with The Kinks. Which is great.
I've heard better songs, but it's still hard to fault this. It's got a good, strong melody, and while the music doesn't do anything particularly special, it does it very well. And, of course, handclaps are always welcome in a song.

I chose Iai's suggestion of De La Soul - Eye Know
I'm not a huge fan of De La Soul, I'm familiar with no more then 5 of their songs, and I'm pretty sure I've loved all of them.
Starts out with a little guitar some beat over it, and some old school rap starts flowin'.
Some brass instruments and a whistle have a tiny solo, more rapping, cool lyrics.
Kind of lengthy at over 4 minutes with rapping and chorus/solo more rapping chorus/solo etc.
I'm not particularly a fan of hip hop or old school rap, but this song was pretty good.

311 - I'll Be Here Awhile
Don't know who/what Amber is, but I know just a few 311 songs, and they seem alright.
A salsa styled acoustic guitar picking opens it, then it turns into ska pretty quickly. It's fairly laid back, though a bit fast to properly relax to. The singer is singing, as singers do, his voice can be annoying at times, but here it's not too bad.
The guitar isn't played in such a staccato way in the chorus, but I think its the same chords. I can't say that much is happening.. well, I could, but I would be lying.
It goes back to the verse.. yep, just like before
2nd chorus has a bit more guitar work, of the lead guitar persuasion. Here's a bridge, which is softer.
The post-bridge chorus is the same as the ones before too... except the singer does some more "climaxy" vocals, which is a nice variation
Yeah, not too much happened, or changed within the song. I see it working well as a song to relax to, or one to have on at a party. Straight out analyzing it will only take it so far, this is a song to feel, and I have to say the feeling was good, just a bit fast.

Cool. I've never heard any Gathering stuff that isn't on If_Then_Else.
The Gathering - Great Ocean Road
Begins with a Kraftwerk-esque electronic melody and a didgeridoo. Clattering, mechanical drums come in, followed closely by guitars and bass.
Ah, Anneke's voice. What a great singer. Great melody, too, though that's a given with what I've heard of The Gathering.
The songs drops back down to just percussion. I though it was just a pre-chorus, but the song builds up again in a similar way to the intro, and there's another verse. An instrumental chorus? Nice touch.
Towards the end, the music cuts away except for some minimalist ambience - keyboards, I assume? - and Anneke sings without any background distractions. Hey, if you've got her as a singer, may as well show her off, right?
There's something of a guitar solo after this, though it appears to be imitating a cello, allowing notes to hold for more harmonic effect than anything else. Think the opening riff to Radiohead's 'Airbag'. We're in that sort of territory. It's nice, but it goes on a bit too long for my liking. The song fades out on this.
Good song. I've heard better from the group, though. The main problem is that it dragged on a bit (6.17 in total), but I liked it.

I wrote a nice little song and dance just a minute ago but it got eaten by internet demons. So **** that.
Anywhoooo, the song opens with jagged guitar stabs and a sample of a gal, I'ma guess she's anorexic. Stop and the pop into the main riff, chunky little distorted thing with some waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiling feedback hanging around. Singer pops in, sounds pretty good, perfectly raspy vocals. Snuggly perfect fit in this type of song.
Around the 1:50 mark, the guitarist breaks the emergency-guitar solo glass and lets himself loose. The bridge beforehand is kinda cool, singer let's us know, he wants to be "so skinny I rot (?) from view." Pleasant thought. Now we're about 3:20 and the tempo drops out and it gets very mellow and introspective. Nice transition from the balls on walls rock to a sour note. Song ends like this, with a little lead taking us out.
I've been meaning to look into these guys for a while now, but I've neglected the thought for a while. No reason, really but I think I'll get on that a little sooner than expected.

Never heard of this band nor anything by them, but there was a convenient link.
Some crazy melodies and guitars and pretty much yeah Turtles meets new wave opens up the song, I don't really dig the opening. It gets better though. Keyboard is pretty strong throughout the song. "And so begins, begins our odyssey.." I didn't really like that part it was too nerdish.
The solos are short and sweet for the most part. Sweeeet.
I like the vocals..kind of 80ish but cooler. It could almost be classified as synthish psychedelia, heh I dunno it's cool though.
Some solos of keyboard and guitar mixed with electronica stuff, a cool guitar riff at the end. I actually suggest everyone check that song out, I can't describe it very well.

Jack Johnson - Bubble Toes
A swing flow, vocals on every pulse, it's foot tapping material. The acoustic guitar is just chords, with chops to cut them off. A bass and cymbal bit in there sounds really jazzy.
At 0:50 it goes into straight 4/4 time, still bouncy, but now it's more melodic, happier sounding. Some hand drums and guiros and stuff for the percussion. It goes on for not long, and then a drumkit comes in to do the drums instead.
It sounds even happier now, he sings a "la da da da" bit, which sounds good, it's quite laid back, a song for a good day. The drums stop for a bit, but the music is the same, it seems even more laid back now somehow. Heh, as soon as I say it sounds like ____, the next bit is even more so.
The singing is great, it's simple but fits so well with the music. A middle section, based mainly on percussive sounds, back to the verse which sounds really nice. "La da da" bit again, and this is the last bit of singing before the song fades out on the percussive part.
I quite liked that, it would be great music to drive to. Easy to listen to, simple without being boring. I feel good after hearing it.
The only things I didn't like was the start, which didn't fit in with the rest of the song, and I think the ending could have been better.
Great stuff, 9/10

No Man- All that you are
well, I sort of like the way it begins with the guitar arpeggios and the ride cymbals. I'm not really fond of the way that the vocals are mixed though. Other than that, it doesn't really seem all that bad. Well, actually, the music seems just a little bit trite. When the song kicks in, it's sort of interesting though. The drums are holding down a beat that isn't really expected for a 6/8 song at all. The shimmering choir pads are quite beautiful in my personal opinion...but the vocals keep boring me. Then the chorus kicks in, and I get those shivers down the spine that you hear whenever you hear something that's really good. However, I think that the verse is just sort of dull and boring.
So overall: boring verses, kickass chorus.

Lorenzo's Tractor - Gossamer
Okie dokie. The download place says "experimental/shoegaze/noise."
The tune opens up with a plodding beat, and the lead singer coughing. He then goes into a little spoken word tirade about drugs. Knuckleheads trying to fly out windows, giving the psychedelic experience a bad name and all that fun stuff. Very Velvets derived back-up going on behind him, something out of the Spacemen 3 school of slow burning drone. In other words, heavy on the reverb and very low on dynamic changes. And then the singer finally sings. I wish he'd stop.
He sounds a bit like Nick Cave, except Cave has presence and interesting lyrics. This guy doesn't display a whole lot of either here. Deep vocals intoning silly verses about getting high and flying away. Plus Nick Cave can actually sing. This guy can't.
There's really not much else to say beyond the fact that the song is almost 8 minutes long and one minute isn't much different from another. Not that I don't dig droning sounds, I do. But this was bad. It wouldn't have been quite so horrendous if the vocalist kept doing his goofy spoken-word shpiel and not tried to sing. Maybe if I had shot up beforehand, I could have gotten a little more in to it. Talk about giving the psychedelic experience a bad name.
Did not enjoy at all, sorry.

Essex Green - Our Lady In Havana (4:49)
Song begins with an electric organ melody and vaguely funky muted chord stabs on guitar. It has a very 60's psychadelic feel to it, but with that funk element too. Bass is sporadic, but bright, and lifts the piece when it does feature. The singer is female, her singing style is rather bland, which I don't mean in a bad way. It's intentionally monotonal, but it sounds well.
The sound reminds me of a particular band, but I can't recall who right now. The first section continues in this rather subdued fashion, hinting at something more from time to time. Towards the end of the section the instrumentation adjusts momentarily, the organ and drums leave and the guitar takes over, playing arpeggios. It sounds nice.
The second section sees the song become much brighter and the pace picks up. The previously elusive drums now become much more prominent. The organ starts to play chords in a choppy style and a second guitar plays fills. Then the guitar starts to play chords sharply. This is a very nice progression, I like it alot. :) The song keeps getting bigger, the singer begins to demonstrate her vocal talents more, harmonising her voice somewhat. The 60's style is unavoidable, I have to make the comparison.
Strings enter for the chorus, and from there begin to dominate the melodic sphere of music, taking the lead for the instrumental break after the chorus. Oustanding. We then have a repeat of the verse and chorus formula, which I don't need to detail again, before a return to the string melody. I have to mention that just after the chorus, at the beginning of the string section, the key is raised and it is absolutely spine-tingling. A few guitar fills and we fade out etc.
10/10 - I hated it at first, but I withdrew my review until I'd listened 3-4 times, and I'm glad I did. Wonderful tune.

Well I just had my first taste of Izzy in another Forced Listening thread, and now all the others seem to be full of him
Izzy Stradlin' - Ride On - 5:27
Starts off with a bit of intro guitar, sounds like it might actually be the end of the previous song rather than an introduction to this new one. Anyway, after that another nicely catchy riff starts in. I like this man's riffs.
Short quieter section just before the second Ride on, baby! chorus is a part I like, and the solo after that seems well-placed after 1:30 of good and catchy guitarwork. After the solo we go back to the riff of before, which is no bad thing. I can see a pattern developing in Izzy songs, though; good to listen to, but not much to actually say about them.
2:34 now, and I do like those little quiet bits before the choruses. And another good solo now, longer than the last one.
Ah, this is somewhat better. We're at 3:36 or so, and though I was enjoying the song, I was mentally already rating it lower than the last one I heard. Now we have this slower, quieter, guitar-noodling part, and it's awesome. Hurrah. Goes straight into another chorus though, before the song leads out on a nice combination of the main riff and some general guitar. More good stuff, and better than the last one I heard I think, thanks to the parts towards the end.

ENDE NEU
Interesting sounds here. It's...sort of like sand, and whooshing noises. It's sort of like they are simulating the sound of sand storm onstage. I really dig it. It's really hypnotic in my personal opinion. The way that the crowd randomly starts yelling every once in awhile makes it even more fun. Then the bass starts, being sort of percussive. Well... the crowd applauses right after the 'sandstorm' stops. I kind of like that. The strings here are quite nice sounding as well, and good ol' blixa holds down a nice vocal part at the same time. Then the pounding drums come in, making it even more cool. Hmm...that climax around 2:30 is quite nice. The beat is completely driving, and slightly tribal. Actually, this sounds like some sort of festive music for a nomadic tribe. Which complements the 'desert' sounds at the beginning of the piece. The yelling of ENDE NEU is quite enjoyable as well. Yay...love the little howl around 3:40. The song just builds and builds, leaving you waiting for an explosion of sound that never quite comes. It just hits a climax, stays there, and then softens. A wise decision, if you ask me. The clapping and the stick clicking has a nice addition to the mood. I could easily see this song in the background of some sort of desert movie style soundtrack, with the pounding drums everywhere and the haunting strings. It definitely drives. I like it...
Of course, I'm biased, considering I love E.N....but I've never heard anything off of ENDE NEU the album. So...

Hahaha. Okay. I'll probably be about an hour though, coz I'm watching Soul Deep right now. :)
Volcanic Telephone - Emergence
Starts with a low, doomy bassline and simple, understated drums. Some ambient, radar noises then come in (think Fugee's Ready Or Not), providing a melody of sorts. The song changes a little after a few seconds, but not much. A couple of minutes in, some sound comes in that sounds like a hoover. Then some MIDI circus music. Fun.
Doesn't this song finish any time soon? Wow, it's only 4.09 long. This feels like about 10 minutes.
Oh, good, at 4 minutes it speeds up a bit.
Overlong and boring. Could have a good song if it wasn't trying so hard to milk such little material.

Mansun - Wide Open Space
Unusual sounding acoustic guitar opens it, sounds like something Korn might do.
The singer starts.. is it a guy or girl? It's hard to tell... probably a guy. The song goes on in the fashion of alt rock, the opening riff is still going with fairly straightforward drums, some minor variations. It goes a bit harder in the chorus, but it sounds very similar to the verse music.
There's a little bridge with swirly guitar, the next verse has some dissonant strings for a bit, and some extra vocals going "ba ba ba" for a variation.. but the main bit is still the same as before.
The line "wide open space" is repeated a lot throughout. The music is repetetive too, the music never lets up. I actually feel uncomfortable listening to it.. closed in, so much for the wide open space. Lucky it's only 4 mins long.
I don't think I've felt such a feeling from a song before.. even though it was a bad one, I'll give it points for being able to do so. The singer should have taken more breaks, he(?) was there nearly every second of the way, and it got to me. The music did much the same thing, and the slight variations weren't enough to make much of a difference for me.

Starts with what I thought would be a spoken word interlude, but a hip-hop beat comes in after a while, and it turns out that's his rapping voice.
It's a rap song about music without guitars not being real music. Nice. It must be a pretty old song, though, because it namedrops Elastica. Man, I haven't heard them in years. The music is pretty similar to something the Dust Brothers might do, except more stripped back.

What I've heard by her is minimal, though I've liked most of it. Heard lots about this song though, so like the Whigs, high hopes. A capella might make it difficult to review, though.
Tori Amos - Me and a Gun - 3:44
Okay, here we go. You understand this review is probably going to suck though, right?
...
*3:44 later* My usual practice in writing reviews is to write them as I listen through the song. Listening to this it soon became apparent that wouldn't work, since I had to pay attention to what she's singing. So this is all written post-song, and I apologise for the quality of my recollection.
I could guess from the name of the song that it probably wasn't going to be a particularly happy affair, but I suppose I underestimated exactly how little happiness there would be. This is a pretty bleak song (unless you want to consider her determination to see Barbados a ray of hope or positivity). I won't just spell out the whole thing - it'd be both pointless, and annoying for anyone who hadn't heard it yet might be strange enough to read this in detail.
I will say that her voice is good throughout, but then that's not really news. She manages to keep the levels in her voice and such consistent with each other (barring interesting little flourishes here and there) for the most part, and the actual tune of the song (ignoring the lyrics) is a good one. And heavy is a good word for it. What's more, she kept my attention (rigidly) throughout the whole thing, which can only be a good thing for an a capella song. And that's about all I can say about it. Told you this would suck :-/

I've never heard of Solomon Burke, but I am familiar with the Blind Boys of Alabama, I have their CD with Ben Harper.
Opens with some nice acoustic guitar work with some church organ-ish type of sound in the background, there's drums and a piano too. Voila, music! Powerful Black man's voice singing the song...the lyrics are pretty deep. The Blind Boys have a minor part in the song, just chiming in at the chorus and more towards the end. Solomon Burke has a really strong voice, it sends chills down my spine. Actually it doesn't but it's still very nice. The lyrics don't single out any specific events, just kind of generalize about struggles of blacks, although this song could be meant for any race easily.
The song is straight up Gospel music which I don't listen to much, but this song was really good. The chorus was addictive, song doesn't get old after listening to it a few times, no parts I want to skip through.

I like Ben Harper, but I've not heard Jack Johnson. Heard mixed reports of him, too.
Jack Johnson - Flake - 4:07
Starts off with some nice, light acoustic strumming - always a good start when I'm in the mood for Ben Harper - and what sound kinda like steel drums in the background. When the song starts up properly though, the presence of regular drums makes me think I either imagined the steel drums, or they were just an intro. Whatever it was, it was a good start to the song.
Actually, steel drums seem kind of like a metaphor for the song; light, airy, upbeat, etc. The guitar is awesome, both the steady strumming and the occasional, higher picthed twiddling. His (I'm assuming Jack's, though I don't know) voice is pretty good. Nothing technically amazing, but fitting the music well. Backing vocals are minimal, and half the time I get the idea I'm mistaking another layer of guitar for lyricless vocals.
3:20 or so, and this is the bit I was looking forward to; the vocals drop away, the song gains a bit more of a groove, and an awesome little instrumental section ensues. Very nice. Unexpectedly (in my limited experience, anyway) the vocals return before this is fully over, and the song carries on with this instrumentally-awesome, somewhat groovier idea through a variation on the chorus, and a fade-out.
8/10 Pretty good. Good guitar, decent vocals, pretty good song. And the bit from around 3:20 onwards was just great.

His XXCS is totally experimental avant garde.
Part eight about hypnotizes you to sleep than part nine BLASTS you back to reality.
Parts two and three, Rhythm Hymn and Meadow Moon, are my favorites.

Talking Heads - Slippery People
I think i got a live version.
It starts off with a shuffle drum beat and synth, the basic Talking Heads sort of thing. Vocals come in and then they harmonize with another set of vocals. More synth sound effects come in.
The chorus consists of the band singing a line, then the lead singer coming in alone between every line.
This pattern continues, until an oriental-sounding sound :p comes in and does some stuff, then the singer comes in and goes "bep, bep, bep, ba, ba, ba...." and then they go into the chorus. They do the chorus many times without intruments, and the song ends.

Alright, I'm going to find this song interesting becuase I haven't remembered you rating a song that you ever liked. Besides I have no idea what to expect.
Starts on a really fast snare hits and weird synth sounds. The drums remind me of Napalm Death but it doesn't really sound like a metal song. Alright, this song is some sort of spacey avant garde thing with echoey screaming everywhere. I'm not sure what to think right now.
At 1:20 a heavy guitar plays a chunky power chord and things go quiet, yep this is likley to be a grindcore song from here on. I'm so right. The only thing I reconized the satanic singer say is "DARKNESSSS" creeeeeepppy.
After the ricdiculious grindcore stunt, the band return to the avant garde spacy vibe at 2:30. I'm enjoying the delayed guitar. A monk like choir joins in for a short bit but it doesn't last long as they go back into thrash mode. This would be so much better without the death metal vocals and more ambient parts. The grindcore parts can stay they make the mellow parts more dramatic
Rating 6/10 I feel the urge to check at lest two more songs though.

Good song, but I would have liked it better without the vocals. They weren't *bad*, and they do fit with the song to an acceptable point, but they didn't help the listening experience either, and I think I would have had a better time with the song if it were just the music. The music here knows how to take it easy; my only complaint about that is the discordant sampling that pops up in the second half - it's too far up in the mix.

Kraftwerk - The hall of mirrors
I was going to do the patton song, but I'd probably give it a 10, so i stayed away.
The songs starts off with a noise a nintendo or a pinball machine would make. Id does it for a while. Then some echoey banging comes in from behind it. Some more electronic video game sounds come in, and im-a-likin' it. Another electonic noise that sounds like a nylon-stringed guitar somes in and then some brit starts talkin gin rhyme. oh great.
He sounds like Morrissey. I want to puke. Another verse comes in, and this pattern continues. That pinball noise keeps going on. Now the brit is talking about falling in love with himself. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. The pinball noise gets a little louder and wierder. A few choruses continue.
The same pattern continues. How bland can you get as a songwriter? The nylon strings do a little solo. Now that i think about it, they dont sound like nylon strings at all...
He comes back talking again. I keep picturing some cheesy morrissey looking dude. :upset:
welp he does another verse / chorus set, then another chorus, and then it fades out.
no. the song was the same repetetive crap over and over. And it doesnt help that the singer reminded me of that Morrissey flamer

Beach Boys - Caroline, No *One second, let me get in the mood and part my hair to the side, rar*
I really dig the intro, with the tambourine or moraccas or whichever instrument they have. This gets my really psyched for some experimentality!!!
And aha! This song reveals itself, yet another timeless bridge between blue-eyed, teen idol music and rock'n'roll that we know now! The lyrics start off telling of Caroline getting a hair cut... and she's a different person. I assume this is about her changing.
Rightfully so... the relationship seems to be at an end with the changing character of Caroline! There is a light jazz feel to the song I dig alright as well. Brian Wilson is singing some pretty high notes in this song that is enjoyable.
I also would like to point out something that sounds like a harpsichord, it's somewhat foreshadowing of the psychadelia era soon to unravel! Percussion echo, harpsichord, is this not the structure of the late 1960's psychadelia?! +1 for this influence Beach Boys.
That's about where this song ends for me, the sound of the Beach Boys is a little bit too dated for me. It's very nice to know of, and hear occasionally, somewhat like a museum! You love seeing ancient pictures, but if you have a very modern house, you wouldn't wanna bring home Civil War paintings.... just something nice to look at sometimes.
For sake of history, and my appreciation for their contributions I will rate this song 7.5/10! I like the lyrics, just a little hard to swallow.

1) Traffic - Freedom Rider
2) Queens of the Stone Age - The Blood is Love

Queens Of The Stone Age - The Blood Is Love
Unusual waltz intro.
Soon changes to a not too hard bit of 4/4 rock. This sounds like their normal sound, going by the songs I've heard before, just a bit softer. A siren guitar line that just keeps going for ages.
This verse, I guess it could be called, goes on for quite a while with slightly strange muse-like chord progressions and that sireny sounding lead guitar. I don't mind it, but probably couldnt listen to it too often. It's very dry sounding... or feeling, it's like dust is blowing by in the middle of nowhere on a hot day. The singer has a very drowsy voice, he blends in to the music.
A more waltz like instrumental passage makes for a change to the music. Soon goes back to the long verse, I think it's even longer this time. There's a bit where it slows down for a bit, I had hopes that it would play something different, but again it's gone back to the verse riff, and ends soon after
For 6:37, it felt about that. I would have liked a bit more variation to get away from that one long verse over and over. That said, it wasn't a bad sound, just overused I feel.
6.5/10

The Red Paintings - The Streets Fell Into My Window
Ok we're starting out with a violin I believe... with some guy talking. This guy is pretty eerie as well. I'm liking the violin playing with the subtle guitar joinin in after 30 seconds or so. And here comes the conjoining of all instruments and a dreamy choir in the background with the guy's talking getting even more irate than before... borderline screaming.
Ok... if you could mix the dude from They Might Be Giants, Neil Young, & Thom Yorke... I think it would sound like this guy. Or maybe i'm just really tired and imaginative. Anyway, I like the tense guitar.... it's the kind of 1,2,3, 1,2,3 1,2,3 that you hear in horror flicks. And now we get the chorus with a jam part, and an IMMEDIATE return to the horror-guitar, I like it. (Don't get me confused this isn't goth rock or anything, just a tense guitar verse)
To the finale, we get a few violin notes that weren't on the song before to add some complexity... and an ending composition-jam. Now we return back to the subtle tense guitar to allow the song to leave you with knots in your stomach!
This is a very solid song. This might not be a favorite, but this song has me searching for some more music by this band! 7.3/10

Traffic - Freedom Rider
Sax and piano starts things. The singer starts, and it does sound like something from an era long passed. The song somehow sounds ahead of it's time, not that I'd know, but something about it is unusual... hey there's a flute.
I didn't like the piano/sax section at first, but it's grown on me quickly. Theres another verse, then chorus, much like before. It builds up to bit of a climax with the piano and organ.
Flute solo! Rather interesting to hear, it reminds me that I have heard very few flute solo's. Ooh, there's 2 of them at times, side by side. Very cool. It goes on for a while.
After the solo, the singer sounds more soulful, or more desperate? But it turns into an growing instrumental climax, with the line "Freedom Rider" repeated every now and then. The flute comes back going wild, but awsome. Then as it can go no further, the mood drops right off and it ends well.
If I was myself, as I am now, but in the 60's, this is the type of music I'd be listening to. I really liked it. 9.5/10

Seeing as I couldn't easily find the Sepultura song I decided to try XTC - Greenman because who could resist 70s pagan pop-rock? :p
I actually like the start, sounds a bit like a frog but it's effective and interesting, quite lively and happy sounding.
Then the main melody starts and it's good, quite Middle Eastern it seems at the beginning but very flowing and sweeping. Seems quite grand. The lyrics and vocals. Now. I'm not too sure about them, the singer is good, effective but I prefer a deeper voice. It's growing on me though, very melodic and sprightly? That's the only way I can think to describe it. You can imagine him dancing round a field in a robe with a sickle. I watch too much Asterix.
It's very sing-along-able and catchy as you would expect what with it being a pop-song, very unusual though. You wouldn't get something like that now. The use of other intstruments is good, I like the flute part, I think it's a flute anyway, could be a piccolo. You can hear very different influences all the way through.
Very grandiose song especially for being a pop song, at 6:17 it's quite long and incorporates loads of different sections and parts. Quite repetitive as you'd expect but not too much although it is quite annoying. In short, it's a catchy, entertaining song with a bit more substance than usual. I wouldn't be able to listen to it over and over but it is enjoyable and certainly very interesting. Nice little classical piece at the ending as well. The cheesiness cannot be denied though. ;)
7/10 Wouldn't really look XTC up again except for a distraction or sorts.

New name to me. Not too sure what darkwave is either.
Hoo, there's a big choir right from the start. A dark majestic electric piano plays with some horns backing and some big drum hits.
Hey cool, it goes into a mid-tempo dance beat with Indian/Bollywood type vocals, definitely in another language. The choir voices fade in and out in creepy fashion. I hear some African (maybe) voices, like Deep Forest. This is kind of cool.
At 3:30 it goes all calm, some ethnic instruments play some over a droning synth and sitar. We have an ambient 2 minutes break.
A fast run of strings, which sounds very awsome, signals the return of the drum beat, and the same piano as the start. The drum beat is more tribal, at least for a short time. Some of the older beats come back, different vocals though.
It's pretty well done, keeping the interesting factor up with the right amount of variation, but not being too different. There's also a flute solo. Choir comes back, and builds up and up, getting near the end now. The very last choir note is repeated a bunch of times and then it fades out on a low synth drone note.
I thought that was pretty cool, maybe a bit try-hardish with all the ethnic sounds and choirs, but it was really well done. It stayed interesting over the 9 minutes, which was good. I might get more if it's like this. This is Hollenthon in dance music form.

Simon And Garfunkel - "The Sounds of Silence"
I guess I downloaded a live version of the song, possibly the only version? I first heard this song in The Graduate. With most S&G this song is about the vocals and lyrics. They had an amazing harmony. The song is about mans lack of communication. This is one of those rare songs where the lyrics are deep and meaningful, yet still sound great when sung. The song is very 60's sounding, just some simple guitar riff over some acoustic guitar with drums eventually. Some people don't like this song because of the electric guitar and drums but I don't have a problem with them. I would like to select a little blurb of lyrics that I like to prove the greatness of the lyrics, but all of the lyrics are great.

G. Love & Special Sauce - Honor And Harmony
I was expecting something pretty laid back, like Jack Johnson, and it is. The main difference would be the music style, it's hip hop beats with some sparse funk guitar. The vocals are sung, not rapped.
I think I heard a tiny burst of trumpet. A bit of mute guitar comes in and features in the chorus, which has harmony in the vocals. Sounds like positive lyrics, but just to be careful of what the future holds... something like that.
Some acoustic guitar helps out with fills, but not doubling the mute guitar. Hmm, verse and chorus again. What else can I say?
The bouncy sounds of Jews Harp in the middle gives it a bit of flavour while the acoustic has bit of a solo. Then it goes back to the verse music and repeats a line about the next awakening is you.. Ends soon after.
Not bad, generally decent music, though it seems a bit sparse at times. I found nothing in it to be super excited about. A good song for relaxing to, maybe not listening to like we do in FL here, but definitely as a background happy mood setter song. I could listen to more of this, no problem. 7/10

Custard - Nervous Breakdance
I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this song sounds very interesting!
The song starts with a funky quite upbeat bass riff which is then joined by vocals, i find this bit to be a bit weak to be honest and probably my least favourite part of the song.
The drums and a bit of guitar then jump in with the bass coming to the forefront and the vocals coming more alive.
The song then begins to pick up tempo. What i'm really liking about this song is the layers that are being built up with each verse.
About 3 quarters of the way through the singer is joined by some backing singers, this is by far my favourite part of the song.
It then reverts back to a quiet and similar style to the introduction of the song before kicking back into the chorus style again.
I really really enjoyed this song, if theres anything else worth checking out by them let me know blue!

Eels - Baby Genius
Weird is definitely an apt genre name for this song. It begins with what sounds like someone searching for a radio station before the music starts properly. When I say music, it's a children's mobile with intermittent blasts of TV static and feedback in the background. The vocals start speaking over the 'music' and the sound of breaking glass and crowd chatter. They're quiet but strained. There's the sound of violins that come in the background. The lyrics are pretty nonsensical butt the singer manages to make them sound almost heartfelt. Then song sort of just grinds to a halt. This is a very weird song. If you're a fan of obscure avant-garde stuff you'll probably like it. 6/10

Ani Difranco - Hurricane
Starts out with a really heavy bass line. Ani starts singing and the drums come in. I like her voice alot. The chorus sounds great. The guitar is really funky. I like it. She reminds me of Joss Stone. She's doing a good job of not making the sound sound exactly the same as Bob's version. The songs going along really well. She has some good intensity during the verse and then she picks it up and sounds more uplifting during the chorus. For such a long song it's really keeping my interest very well. The instruments drop out and she sings by herself. And now the song is over. That was really good. I like how she made it her own song yet still did justice to Bob's version. I think I might look into her more.

Gov't Mule - Fool's Moon
I've seen this band name mentioned enough to want to hear them.
Nicely simple intro, a slow, basic bluesy riff with some watery organ. It's also got some hard rock power in the guitar, which is nicer to me than just all out blues.
The singer has a good clear voice, somewhat like deeper Chris Cornell. The verse music is quieter, but the chorus is more powerful but a pretty simple riff and the singer fits in perfectly. They do above a couple of times, with some cool blues guitar lead in the later stages of it.
Theres a little bridge thing in the middle, just a new riff, and some lead guitar as well. It does as any bridge does and ends soon after. The verse and chorus come back as before, with even more lead guitar, which reminds me a bit of Pearl Jam's lead guitar. And this is how it goes on until the end.
Good head nodding music this, I'm enjoying it a fair bit. Not my preferred music by any means, but when something's good, you can't just ignore it. All is on for about 6 minutes, it doesn't change much but it isn't boring. The singer made it really work for me, his voice is just right.

Decoder Ring - Collapse Coming On
Starts with a sound that souds like a chopper carried by Santa's reindeers. It's quite dark, ambient...until a lullabyish melodies surfaces gradually, changing the mood. The song becomes a bit more bold after the first few bars after the drums came in. It's got a poppy base, but there are no vocals. There is a brief tranquil sequence, and then it goes into a slightly heavier version of the first parts...with distorted guitars. The song still has a very upbeat vibe until the end.
Pretty decent track...it did remind me a bit off something on Mogwai's "Happy Songs For Happy People" album...but it was more in the mood of the song...not the way it actually sounded. 7/10

Very unusual, at least compared to what I'm used to listening to, definatly not a horrible song but not the type of song I would listen to, a little upbeat for me, also had a very throwback type feel to it, especially the guitar, definatly a song to listen for if your into lighter listening and happy upbeat music, I'll give it a 5.5 meaning it wasn't what I listen for but I easily made it through the whole song.

Starts off with some cellos and electronic noises bouncing form left to right. cymbals join in, and then fast computerized drums join in also. very fast. for now it's just those 3 things bouncing all over the place. There is some other sounds peeking up once and a while, very fast-like and hard to comprehend. the drums stop at 2:30, but come back in right away, then dissapear agin so it's jsut the strings section wailing away. Man this part is a real tear jerker. now xylophone comes in. This song is basically the strings section doing whatever while the computer does all the work of making the fastest fake drumming ever. The song fades out.

Anger Management
The song starts of with some soft piano playing for about 10 seconds until the beat kicks in. It's fairly laid back and Patton goes into a deep, growling, spoken word kind of thing. Around 00:30 seconds he starts singing a bit more. At 48 seconds he goes into a falsetto singing bit (either that or its the female singer from Lovage). The formula repeats. The lyrics are sexually charged and the verses can get somewhat boring. At around 2:00 minutes and some change, a stuttering violin comes in. It fades as Patton growls/speaks some more. It's interesting to hear his voice in this type of backdrop.
I give this song a 6/10 because, though it starts off fairly interesting, it gets old.

The song starts very Patton like, with some drumming and fingerclipping
When the singing begins it get’s quite upbeat.
At 1:30 or so we get some interesting break, followed by a bass driven part.
After this, the song get’s a bit more chaotic, and changes a bit, the constant synth tone underneath get annoying.
At 3:10 there is some eerie piano and guitar part, reminds me a bit of delirium corda.
And, uh, it goes on and on and on, and it ends
Sounds ok, but I’m not impressed, there is potential, but this song doesn’t do nmuch for me

Cool intro right off the bat, nice drums. Kind of a weird vibe around 40 seconds in. I'm liking the riffs and I think harmonzied guitars.
The bass kind of stands out still despite it sounding very chaotic. It sounds like almost too many things are going on at once.
At 2:30 just guitars, nice little part. I really like the part when the drums come back in. This is probably my favortie part of the song, the voice adds alot to the song. Everthing around 4 min starts to sound chaotic again. sudden ending
Overall 7.5/10

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Part 1-5 or 7?
I didn't get the version on YSI, so maybe what I downloaded was different, it was a similar size though.. anyway, it's about time I heard some PF other than The Wall.
Ok I got the Pulse recording. Crowd cheers, A sort-of-harsh synth fades in, with some other sparse keyboard melody. It's quite ambient, and I like that. It goes for 2:30 and some clean guitar electric comes in playing sparse lead bends. I can see now how Anathema gets compared to Pink Floyd, their song Emotional Winter sounds a lot like this.
After a very nice 4 minutes, it begins to change, the guitar starts playing more of a rhytmic thing, synth is fading, slow drums enter. It's now some guitar lead over this slow drum beat, organ is playing lots of minor chords.
Things move along very slowly, but I'm not complaining, this is pretty good. A synth lead is going along now, taking over from guitar.
There is finally some singing after 7 minutes. It's epic/anthemic, reminds me of We Are The Champions, there's a choir too. It's getting a bit tedious at the moment, this singing is going on for a while.
It eventually stops, and a sax solo comes in, sometimes doubling with the guitar. Again, I feel this is going on a bit too long, at least the drums have changed a bit to make it interesting. There's a kind of buildup in here, not as triumphant as I would have hoped. It's still pretty much in a minor key.
Singing comes back, I guess for the last time since there isn't much time left. Yep, when that stops, the sax goes random while guitar fingerpicks.. the crowd starts cheering and it ends.
That 13 minutes went quicker than I expected. I really liked the ambient intro, and the main part of the song when the singing started, but after a while it got a bit mopey, it didn't change often enough for me and I got bored by the end. 7.5/10

Rumors Of The Big Wave - Burning Times
Starts out with a sort of ambient melody done by strings, very beautiful and mellow.. The strings start playing a rythm, and vocals kick in sounds like female and male vocals in unison. Still very beautiful and mellow..
Man, I suck at describing songs.... All I can think of when listening to this is that it's very mellow and beautiful all the way through.. And the lyrics are almost enchanting.. Need a few more listens to figure out exactly what they're about though.. The style sounds very celtic, or irish, or something.. But you already said it was pagan, so I guess that describes it best.. Hehehe
Very good song.. 8.5 out of 10.. I'm gonna listen to this, and track down more of it.... Should I just go get the album called Burning Times? Or is there another album that's more worth getting?

This song is about pagans being persecuted for their beliefs in the times of... whenever it was they killed witches, sung from the pagans perspective.
anyway back to the music......................... Dibs

My picks:
Venetian Snares - Langside (http://s27.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1H0G1OSDOV6UH2E012K5KRV9R9)
Chaotic techo made from samples of other songs.. Langside is far more chaotic, while Einstein-Rosen Bridge is more catchy and "listenable".... Whatever fits your mood
That.....was freaking awesome. I'll definitely be getting some of his CDs.

Venetian Snares - Einstein-Rosen Bridge
Oh, I thought it would be a slow one, this has a fast pace and lots of glitchy drums and samples that sizzle by. Theres a B Minor chord, cut up and used a bit like a ska chord.. strange because the song I was listening to just before featured the B minor chord a lot.
This one is crazy enough, I'm glad I didn't take the really crazy one, I would have hated it for sure. Some guys are talking about time and space and the speed of light. They reminds me of Devo, I'm not sure why.
This is mental, I am in the wrong mood for something like this. It's surprisingly easy to follow the beat and rhythm. At 2:30 there is a weird wobbly synth solo, totally fits into the strange music.
I can't handle it right now, I think I'll keep it though. It was interesting, for sure. Not that hard to digest when you compare it with other songs in the genre, so I'm sure it will grow on me with just a few listens.
7/10
