Sting - Straight To My Heart
Some percussion for a quick intro, marimba starts up in some ethnic sounding mode, and hey there's the 7/4. Some synth piano noodling. The percussion is not a drum kit and never is. The marimba is the one keeping the beat.
Verse sounds like a desert theme, I could play Dune to this music, though it reminds me of another song. Stings voice sounds a bit different to what I've heard in the Police, it sounds like it's harmonized most of the time. Theres some other instruments coming in now and then, a horn and some boowoop thing.
It's a mix of african/persian musical ideas, sounds good.
Seamlessly turns into a very melodic chorus with a flute and it sounds lots like the one in Rusted Root- Send Me On My Way. Clapping builds the happy mood too. He sings something about "come into my world... you'll never have to sweep the floor... be my wife". The post chorus is 4 bars of atmospheric chanting before returning to the verse music.
Synth strings join in here, there's some vocal echo added now, this bit has thicker sounding instrumentation, which is only apparent after a few listens. I haven't really listened to what he's singing except the lines "Straight to my heart" which are easy to pick.
Another chorus, post chorus, verse music with some more synth piano noodling, then fades out.
I find it very interesting, I like the musical sounds lots, good contrasting and transitions between verse and chorus, structure is simple but that's fine. I'll definitely keep it.
9/10 just because it didn't "wow" me

Fred Nachbaur - Bridge The Gap
Before I start this review, I'll just say my computer is playing silly buggers with me, my version is 3:01, is this correct?
Onwards!
It starts with some weird synth sounds. I heard a chord in there, somewhere. You're right, it does sound like video game music a lot. There's so much going on at once, i can't really begin to describe it. There's an excellent bassline throughout, some vocal harmonies (all done with a synth) and some cool pitched percussion, sounds like those wind bells. New bassline now, synthy slap, sounds kind of porny/cheesy. Some bongos or something cranking away. Now some random instrument starts playing a solo, sounds like a xyolophone. Now back to the originial bass line, with the vocal harmonies. More wind bells. And suddeny, the song ends. That went fast. This dude is the coolest. I'll have to check more of his stuff out.
10/10 - couldn't have possibly been better. Sorry about the crappy review... there's way too much going on to describe it all.

Cypress Hill - Stank *** Hoe
I don't usually like hip hop so this is an attempt to be open minded. I like the intro which continues in the background and the lyrics are funny but serious at the same time. Another good thing is the singing and humming which sometimes accompanies the rapping and is sometimes by itself although the chorusy bit is a bit repetitive. His voice is a bit too nasally for me although I like his giggling. The outro bit is quite cool as well. All in all it's better than I expected, I would listen to it if it came on the radio but it hasn't converted me to hip hop really.

Voltaire - Dead Girls
Something told me this was going to be unique...so I chose this track. Nice start...acoustic guitars, very melodic, folky violins...the sound/production of the violins are a bit like GY!BE or Motorpsycho. Really cool how that one melodic chord maintains through the tempo change. An english-accented vocalist starts...very theatrical stuff. I like this...never heard anything remotely like this. The chorus is a bit more laid back. I like how the violins are the main melody...and the acoustic guitars and bass guitar keep a basic structure of the music. It's sort of a fake-depressing love song with a bit of a disturbed lyrical approach. I like it...really bizarre song. 8.0/10

The Young Gods - Rue Des Temptes
I like some industrial so I thought I'd try this song, plus I don't know who Al Green is.
I like the odd little start bit then his voice comes in which I really like, very nice. The random chords while he's speaking in French are really good, very atmospheric. I like the guitars later on and I like the raspiness of his voice. The guitars start to sound like violins which I like. It might be interesting to look up the lyrics. I like where at 2 minutes it all goes quiet except for a plodding beat and guitars and the sudden ending is cool but why so short :(
Well, it didn't sound like most industrial I've heard and I really liked liked it although it was a bit too short and I like to be able to understand the lyrics, I do like French though. 9/10

Adam & the Ants - Lady catch a falling star
Heavy distorted guitar doin this kinda classic rock/punk/blues chord picking. Reminds me of the Kings of leon. Drums make they're apearance and the song starts growin, this dude surely knows how to hit those drums. :smash:
Now vocals are in: great rockin voice, the one that holds on to u and makes u wanna scream along. Some clappin comes along with what i assume is the chorus. This whole riff repeats and there he comes, the so wanted guitar solo. Guitar still disstorted makin this exciting, powerful sound along with creepy backing vocals, but it's gone before i get the mood. Vacking vocals still in repeating "hu" "hu", and the whole song comes back to the begining. The whole first riff is prepeated to fade away along with some "hu" "hu" "hu".
Nice song. Like a slap around.
Easy listenin notes but distorsion makes the whole song.

Manu Negra - King Kong Five
The name sounds familiar, I think I read about this band and was planning on checking them out a while back. Ok, starts with reminds me of a cheesy 80's dance song beat. Then some rap-ish vocals talking about beats of so-songs and such. The bassline is alright, but otherwise I'm not diggin' it much. A cliche little old school rap acapella part... I didn't need to hear that. There's some organ stuff that sounds pretty nifty. The vocals and the beat are getting pretty annoying, though. Pretty much more of the same for the rest of the song. Pretty short song.
The instrumentation was alright, but the vocals and the drums weren't floating my boat. 5/10.

Dismemberment Plan - Girl O'Clock
This sounded interesting, especially the title, so I picked it. I like the jangly start and the guitar afterwards. His singing/speaking/stuttering is cool and doesn't annoy me like it may have done. His high singing in the slow bits is good as well and I like how it's a very busy song although I can see it may be annoying at some times. I especially like the keyboard/organ in the background as well. The bit where all stops except his voice made me laugh and the instrumental afterwards is very ice to listen too. The lyrics were slightly nonsensical which I like.
All in all I liked listening to it although when I'm in a certain mood I imagine the business would be annoying and it may be hard to listen to a lot of the same style. It was also short which, although it added to the song's effect, was bad because I liked it.

The Birthday Massacre - Broken
Well.. I say medium-industrial from the word git.
It lightens up a fair bit, going to ambient synth strings and with blobby synth bass and hi-hats. Drums rejoin to meet a woman's singing... a sort of nice melodic voice, it's a little bit 80's like, but sounds good with the echo.
Back to some heavier Filter-like industrial/dance for the chorus, a guy screams here. Screamy synth too.. but it's not all that heavy. That Wumpscut song was much heavier.
Back to the verse again, sounds the same as before. I'm not following/hearing any of the lyrics, but the woman singing sounds nice as before. Chorus, same again. Then it continues with a different screamy synth, no vocals here.
There's an ambient bit, synthy bass. oh yeah, the moshy bit, I've heard plenty of these before, this one doesn't even have a build up though. The heavy bit: no singing here though, which is a bit of a surprise. Theres not even another verse or chorus to
This kind of sounds a lot like ... something I'd hear on teen commercial radio. Catchy on first listen.. it probably won't last long in the interest banks though. I give it a bit extra for being the first alt-pop-industrial song I've heard, and some more for not having such a typical song structure as I expected.
6/10

Once again, I'm having to type this out for the second time, because my computer crashed. So, apologies if I'm a bit brief.
Only heard one song by them before; didn't think much of it, can't remember its name.
Ochre - Horizon - 7:04
Starts off with a pretty cool, fairly fast-paced melody and rhythm. Could be either bass or guitar driven, I can't tell which it is. Could be both, I suppose. Whichever, there's also some good picking/strumming going on over the top of it, and some nice cymbal-tapping in the background.
Less of the picking/strumming after 0:23, when the guitar starts playing a more traditional rock riff. Vocals come in at 0:40 or so, and immediately remind me of the Earshot vocalist, which is a shame because I never really got into Earshot. The lyrics are good though (thanks for providing them by the way).
This song is proving fairly difficult to review so far (about 4 minutes in). It's a good song, but there doesn't ever seem to be much to say about it. Apart from the vocals, I'm liking it so far - they seem to have a good sense for layering their music; guitars, drums and bass are all playing something somewhat different, rather than following each other (or the vocals), and it's good to listen to. I get the feeling I could listen to the whole thing just concentrating on one instrument, and be fairly content.
Some nice bass here, and percussion too, actually. The whole thing cools off to a mellower section, without vocals, around 5:50. Some new instruments come in too - sounds like some hand-percussion (drums being tapped, rather than struck) and maybe a wooden block. It's fairly relaxing.
Song ends after a distorted electronic tone which happens about 6:58. Kind of surprising actually, I was expecting a finale section, with vocals and things, but I guess not.
8/10 Good stuff. I wasn't crazy about the vocals, but I liked the rest, and it's got a good lyrical theme going.
Would I listen to more of the same band? Yup.

The Streets - The Irony Of It All - 3:29
I haven't heard much of the streets except the singles that are played on MTV which I am forced to endure at work.
This song appears to be very pro marijuana and mainly revolves around the fact that alcoohol is legal yet causes much more damage than weed and has two rather interesting role reversals.. There are two characters in this song terry the loud mouth drunk who in the eye's of the law is seen as a law abiding citizen as he doesn't do drugs and tim who is a university student studying engineering who is seen as a criminal as he partakes in smoking marijuana. I really enjoy the way this song is presented it's well rather clever, much more than I expected from a band like the streets to be honest ( I had preconceptions before I heard this song).
When the drunk terry is singing there is a very simple drum beat and some sort of synth/bass riff over the top but when the character tim starts singing a piano enters giving it a much more sophiscated feeling obviously trying to reflect the fact that this guy obviously shouldn't be considered a criminal.
Towards the end the two characters begin to argue obviously the drunk is rather incoherent with his argument while tim is able to construct an effective argument.
The main thing in this song is obviously the lyrics as there isn't much going on intrumentwise but thats just the nature of rap I suppose. I quite enjoyed this song it was a very good piece of modern social commentary.
I'm sorry if this review is a bit incoherent and I probably missed the point somewhere along in this song but it's 9:45am and i'm tired :p

Mike Oldfield - Altered State
I hear a straight rock drum beat with piano... then some melodic IV V I, I V IV chord progression, some guitar cuts and... a german guy with a distorted voice yelling, some female speech samples. Very strange sounding. Haha, the german busts out a guttoral growl amongst all this melody.
The plodding piano with tuba reminds me a bit of Moby and The Beatles - Help mixed. Theres horns and flute here. It's very melodic in a simple way. Then some choirs sing in not-English, sounds Italian, and triumphant. Haha the german guy is here too for some roars, it's nuts.
Drums boom up a bit, a blues sounding descending doubled guitar/piano riff.
Then it goes melodic with lead guitar and the music reminds me a bit of a kids song, but it's probably some mental illness kid's theme going by the rest of the song.
Back to the same blues riff as before. the german guy is back for some more yells, and some animal noises.
Lead guitar mental kid theme again, it keeps rises in key after each phrase. Does so 3 times, and goes into more lead guitar, blues this time, not like before, the snare drum is on reverb pills. A sort of guitar solo
German yell man and female speech/strange kid samples.
Back to Beatle-Moby bit, followed by a trumpet burst of happiness, then the italian choir sings the same thing as before. It all builds up to a climax of german yelling/howling, lead guitar and fades out really quickly into some synth choir.
It's very strange, all these different normal musical ideas beaten into some demented forms, then put together... and fitting! The sound flow is quite good. The only thing sounding bad to me is the very quick fade out/lack of song ending.
My musical mind is changed now and forever. One of the weirdest things I've heard lately :D

This is the only one of those tracks I was able to get from Limewire.
Reel Big Fish - Everything Is Cool
Having seen these guys at Reading, and been mighty impressed, I've been meaning to check some more of them out.
This might qualify as the wierdest ska song I've ever heard. Madcore is right. It starts fairly normal, but very urgent. Then a dense vocal section, featuring at least one double-layered vocal (think SHODAN from System Shock, but male), that could have featured in an 80s B-movie, gives way to an upbeat chorus punctuated by brass and some pretty cool guitar riffs. "Everything is cool.....how are things with you?" Nice concept. Then there's more brass stabs, bringing back the urgency, and it all repeats.
There's some nice riffs that are Manics-esque, and a chaotic, effect-driven solo section that sounds like 4 independant Tom Morellos all playing at once. Overall it's certainly an original track, but it's not one that's likely to convince any ska haters that the genre has merits, and not one I'm likely to be listening to for much longer. So it's disposable, but fun. And twisted.
6/10
I would recommend more stuff by this band because I know more of their stuff, and know this isn't very representative.
My picks -
Martin Grech - Here It Comes, Open Heart Zoo (Both Radiohead-esque proggy art-rock - the first is better, but probably harder to find)
De La Soul - Eye Know (old-school party hip-hop)
Afghan Whigs - What Jail Is Like, Debonair (soul-grunge - should be pretty easy to find)

Martin Grech-Open Heart Zoo
I never heard of Martin Grech before, so this is my first listen. I can't find the other one, sorry.
Soft piano enters, plus strings. Sounds like a horror movie with castles or gigantic mansions. Vocals enter. His voice is new to me, yet somehow familiar. It's like a Thom Yorke-y Chris Martin.
His low banshee singing and the gloomy atmosphere continues until about 2:40, his voice and the instruments get a bit higher. Xylophones(?) and drums join in, heightening the atmosphere. Sounds get a bit distorted, as the singer sounds like he's having an orgasm. Continues until operatic violins end the song.
Overall, I liked the song very much, the atmosphere is great, the vocals and the instruments fit.

Arab Strap - Who Named The Days?
Scottish slow indie hey.. I'm hoping its something like Mogwai meets Blur. So lets go and find out.
Oooh, very much like Mogwai in the musical section from the very start. It's got that super relaxing half time beat that Mogwai does often, the vocals start fairly soon in, they are strong and more prominent, but the singer hasn't got such a stable voice, which I think is needed for this kind of music. The guitar just did a little hammer/pull embellishment which was really nice. I think I heard a womans voice, pretty quiet but nice.
Cello is joining in, a real one. Hey, a piano is there, I didnt even notice that in my first listen. The singer is still going. Then a short instrumental break.
Violin joins in at 2 minutes, nice string harmonies, and they take much more of the stage than guitar, piano and rhythm section. The singer isn't singing as much here, alternating bars on/off. He's singing about someone (or maybe his conscience) treat girl's badly emotionally... no wonder he sounds a bit depressed.
Violin takes a slow lead position, the guitar is chording it up a bit. Panning too, I have one speaker to my ear and the other one is over there -> and I can hear stuff over there that isn't here.. but excuse me I am tired and have had a little bit to drink too.
Oh no, when that slow violin solo finished, the whole thing was finished... over so quickly? 4:22 did not suffice, This could easily be twice that length without being boring. That gets relaxing... then leaves you hanging at the mercy of the next song, unless the next song on the cd follows it up nicely.
I think it had a simple structure, but I never really noticed it until I decided I'd listened enough times. It was a really nice, relaxing listen, good for how I feel right now - tired. The strings interplay weas really nice.
Cons - the guys voice wasn't stable enough, but they weren't bad either. The shortness (or lack of length :p) was the biggest let down for me. Volume could have been more balanced too, some stuff was obscured by the strings.
But... overall it was pretty good. I would surely keep this and check out more if this is how they are.

Camille Saint-Saens - Aquarium
I fail to see the madcoreness in this song, but it is still pretty cool as. I picked up the South German Philharmonic 1999 version, so I dunno which one you have, it may be different. Also, my song was called only Aqua, I don't know if that's the right song or not. Anyway. Remember that old game on the SNES, Ghouls and Ghosts? And that pirate ship, on the second level? This music sounds exactly the same, sort of. It's got this semi-madcore piano thing going on, and some really creepy strings in the background. They kind of crescendo and go quiet again, it's a really good effect. After that, there's some octave thing, or something, going on in the piano, and the strings get a bit quieter. It's all descending, and really cool. On the 3rd time around, it's similar to the intro, but in another key. Then, at about 1:40 or so, it changes, and there's some pretty madcore stuff going on on the piano. It loses it's creepy ambience at this point, almost goes to a major key, briefly. It finishes heaps differently, it's pretty cool.

Diablo - Tristram ("eerie classical")
I never really got into the Diablo craze, so I dont have any idea what to expect. I've heard it's a nihilistic game.
Opens up pretty calmly, with an acoustic guitar playing something classical-guitar-esqe. Other instruments join and exit, including what sounds like a bass and flute. Not much variation as far as I'm concerned, tops for me comes around 3:49 when the guitar goes into a flamenco-style crescendo. At about 5:00 the bass introduces a creepy minor key for a minute, then resumes with the guitar and flute.
You know what, I'm not very impressed by this song. I understand this music as mood music when you're concentrating on other things (like slaying demons or whatever). This music, while cohesive and organized, does not stand out and is not meant to. It is effective at setting a general backround tone, but it is not special in comparison to other songs I've heard with the same goal.

Sebastian Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
This song is cool. A 9 minute epic. First things first, you know that riff, that is often used in scary movies? The one on the organ? Well, I certainly didn't explain it well, but this is the riff, which I didn't know was a Bach thing. Anyway, with that out the way, I'll describe it briefly: this is mainly a huge, 9 minute organ solo. It gets pretty madcore at times. There's lots of huge chords, held for a long time, which gives it great atmosphere. I like it at about 1:20, it gets really fast and tricky, and basically sounds awesome. It alternates between slow and fast bits a lot. It's a hard song to describe really, a 9 minute long solo piece. It changes a lot, but I lack the perfect pitch to name all the notes to describe what a wonderful piece this is. So I'll stop here, and recommend this to pretty much everyone. My only complaint is that it gets a bit directionless at times, it's not really that complex to keep me interested in it for 9 minutes straight.

Stetasonic - Talkin' All That Jazz
First impression: awesome. Starts with a weird synth sound or something and horns I think. Then the bassline comes in and it's awesome. Incredibly groovy. Then the drums enter, filling it in perfectly. It goes on for a bit then the bass cuts out and the guys start rapping. The rapping is actually really cool, really fun to listen to. A couple verses follow, mostly just staying on that same awesome groove but with tons of different variations here and there. Overall it was just very simple but incredibly groovy and fun. A great 'hip hop' song.

The Weakerthans - One Great City!
Acoustic guitar brings the song into being, with a quickish fingerpicked country (?) sound with ska like bits (not ska, but the ones you hear in this type of music).
It's melodic and a bit subdued. It might be 2 guitars, but I can't tell, it's possible that it is just one. The bass bits played by guitar are articulated, which beats root notes any day.
Singer starts a little bit in, he sounds a bit like the Marcy Playground singer with less treble. Lyrics about the close of a day in a city... sounds like this city is failing, things are going wrong, the people are miserable day after day... and the general idea is "I hate Winnipeg"
After this, the ska bits of guitar get louder, this bit is much more likely to be 2 guitars, still I can't be sure. This song is much more about the lyrics than the music. The ska bit gets a few hammer ons, still simple and pushed back to the background when the singing comes back.
The last.. set of lyrics is about a businessman/developer seeing part of the city die, and letting his wrecking ball proclaim "I hate Winnipeg". Maybe he is trying to breathe new life into the city.
And... It's over, seemed pretty quick, and at 3 minutes... it is.
Kind of depressing, I don't know what city life is really like so I can't associate with these lyrics.
With just guitar and vocals, the music is simple but with enough variation to not be basic. The main thing is that it fit the idea of the song well.
I don't think I'll be listening to this much in the future, too depressing for me in that social sense, but it was quite well written and executed.
7.3/10
The volumes were going a bit spazzy, they go up and down by something like 10% every now and then.. may be the fault of the encoder so it's not affecting anything scorewise.

John Butler Trio - 2003-08-17 - The Tivoli, Brisbane - 22 - Take
Starts out with some slow improvising on guitar (?) I think. It's kind of cool but a tad boring. It's starting to get a little more intense, I like that. Enter the percussion. Pretty cool jam thing going on. That goes on for a while then the bass enters. It keeps getting more intense, really goosebumpy. The jam ended and now its gone into this really cool guitar riff with really awesome drums underneath. The bass line is really cool, in fact the whole rhythm is great. And finally we hear the vocals. The guy has a neat voice, the melody is a tiny bit boring but still fits nicely. Lots of jamming going on in the breaks. There's a cool drum solo thing after a break down. It's very cool. The crowd is really into it, and for good reason. It's finally over after probably 7 minutes or so. Back into a jam with the other instruments to the end. Overall that was really cool, I wouldn't listen to it normally but it was definetly worth the 24 minutes I spent on it.

The Porcelain Gods - Emergency Band Meeting
Simple but hooky drums kick things off. The singer's voice, when it appears, is somewhat weak and lacking in charisma, but the melody can't be faulted. There's some interesting backing vocals, making the song sound like an offshoot of Weezer's El Scorcho.
The song drags a little. Some instrumental passages could have been cut to improve overall proceedings - either that, or fewer repeats. The song, in actuality, is only 4.30, but it feels like much longer. In particular, a guitar solo leads to an aimless interlude that really shouldn't be there.
Overall the instrument lines are simple, but there's some good stuff going on. As mentioned, there are a couple of purely instrumental passages, the best of which features some choppy, jumpy rhythm guitar work.
The lyrics are a little hard to decipher, but they sound fairly stock-in-trade from what I can make out. That's okay, though - the melody elevates them.
The more I listen to it, the more his voice sounds like River Cuomo. This is probably the source of many annoying, and most likely unflattering, comparisons to Weezer! That's a little unfair though.
8/10 overall. There's a lot of potential on display here, for sure. Their youth is still evident, which is both a blessing and a curse, but they should grow very well given time. By the time they're 20 they could be something REALLY special.

Asian Dub Foundation - Fortress Europe
Ok, taking the Asian Dub Foundation song as I know most of the others. Seed 2.0 is a great great song by the way!
God this song has a lot going on in it.
The track states its intentions right from the offset, kicking off with some vibrant strings, which have an Eastern European sound to them.
There's also some kind of Asian wind instrument (excuse my ignorance) which comes in here and pops in and out throughout the song. This is really the only sound in the song which gives away the origin of the artists.
The base for the song is a pretty standard trance-ish beat and the vocals are akin to a UK rap/garage delivery. Usually this would be a bad thing for me. I don't usually care too much for that kind of sound in my music but here it certainly works. One of the vocalists slows it down towards the end, with a more relaxed trip hop kind of singing, which I appreciated. The lyrics generally are...too fast for me to hear heh, something about being soldiers, 21st century exodus yada yada.
Towards the middle, there are also some funky electronic noises, which I really felt were going to break out into Tubular Bells.
The song overall is well layered, nice guitars and wangly wangly noises etc sprinkled throughout also keep things interesting.
Something I would definitely consider buying.

Beach Boys - 'Til I Die
Well, I know the typical Beach Boys sound... and it doesnt do much for me. Here goes anyway.
No intro, straight into it and yep, high male harmonies but... it's kind of dreamy and much less poppy than I was expecting. Theres piano and some organ, really light brushed drums, and the vocals are way out in front of everything else.
The "verse" goes for a few lines of high harmonies then breaks for just one or 2 singers to sing a lower pitched line while the others "oooh". I like the lower one more and I wish they did it for longer, it goes right back to the high pitch lines straight after it.
The chord progressions are kind of strange, definitely not pop. Later on theres some whistling which makes it sound trippier. Then they are joined by a glockenspiel and get into the repeating "Until I die" part, which sounds good. The harmonies and offset lines keep progressing with the chord progression staying the same, the voices do something different each time, which is cool. After a while, this shortish song fades out.
This was more interesting to me than I first expected. The lack of poppiness was a plus for me. The verse kind of annoyed me, except the lower pitched line, and when the whistling came in at the 3rd verse it sounded better. After that it changed to the Until I die bit which I liked more.
I can't see myself listening to this very much, but I did get another, more intersting perspective of the Beach Boys from it. There are some changes I could have wished for to suit myself, but it's not up to me. Overall, it was good.. yeah.

Kimono - Japanese Policeman (https://www.smekkleysa.net/audio/full/Kimono%20-%20Japanese%20Policeman.mp3)
Opening track Japanese Policeman is a breath of fresh air. It’s post-rock certainly, but it manages to latch onto a sound that is instantly memorable and persuasive at the same time. It asserts a far more earthy, sinister and darker form than most guitar bands however, nodding more to the claustrophobic tendencies of Joy Division than the pop song melodies that often frequent the genre. Between Sets manages to pull off a slower paced, heart-string-pulling ballad with the same guile as Mogwai, while still managing to raise a smile with some fantastic lyrics. The Elegy is stunning, washed up with choppy guitar and Slint-esque jagged fragments.
Kimono are able to switch styles effortlessly mid-song; one second delving into subtle slow-core torrents, the next plugging in the amps and setting the volume to max. And Mineur-Aggressif is yet another album to emerge from Iceland that passes the quality control requirements with flying colours.

Not much of an idea what to expect.
Headshot - Undergod - 5:18
Starts off with some choppy stabs of sound, then settles into a decent hard rock-ish riff.
Vocals come in around 0:35, accompanied by a drastic toning down of the instruments, which are now repeating almost the same rhythm as before, just in a more relaxed way. The vocals aren't what I was expecting at all, they're slightly vocodered and strained-sounding. I was expecting something louder, more assertive, more commanding. Not bad though.
The voice becomes more natural around the 1:00 mark, and slightly louder, though the music remains the same. Back to the proper riff around 1:20, with a shout from the vocalist. Doesn't last long though, just back to another verse.
A chorus now, I think. A change of riff, with the commanding vocals I was expecting before.
Some cool wah-influenced guitar after that, before a shout of "On your knees!" brings us back to that riff.
It's moving rather quickly now, from style to style, from that riff, to the quieter version, to a couple of totally different bits. I like this bit, it's unpredictable, rather good. The vocalist sounds very propaganda-like in his delivery and lyrics too, which is cool.
It goes all the way back to it's roots for the starting riff again, before fading out on a note.

Got one!
The only Pogues song I know is, predictably, Fairytale Of New York. It's the best Christmas song ever written, so I'm expecting big things.
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Much as expected, it's very upbeat, and very Irish. It evokes images of fulsome women in large skirts dancing in traditional pubs, which can only be a good thing.
A banjo makes an appearance. Bonus points. In fact, the instrumentation is all fairly unorthodox by modern standards - there's an accordian too. Obviously, within the genre of Irish drinking songs, this isn't too unusual, but it's the only genre you're likely to see the instrument appear in.
The only major complaint with the song is that it's only 2.20 long. It wouldn't be a problem on an album, but it's an issue when you isolate the song.
Like many drinking songs, the upbeat mood masks a lyrical bleakness. Shane Mcgowan sings here of death, of being rejected from heaven, and of that old favourite - colonial pride (This land was always ours/Was the proud land of our fathers/It belongs to us and them/Not to any of the others).
Not as good as Fairytale Of New York, but I'll certainly be keeping it on my PC.

UNKLE feat Badly Drawn Boy - Nursery Rhymes
Hm, first song I'll be hearing from UNKLE. Interesting..
Starts off with some feedback. Killer riff comes in. Holy ****ing **** it's catchy. Salsa-ish drums that reminds me of Eunuch Provocateur joins in too, and holy ****ing **** it's good. It sounds more garage-dance than trip-hop at this point. After a few dancey orgasmic moments, vocals enter.
Badly Drawn Boy's vocalist I presume? His voice is a bit laid back, it contrasts with the lively beat UNKLE busts out. It has a certain distorted, watery quality that gets you in some sort of a trance when you listen to it. Gosh, this is amazing.
The driving rhythym repeats a lot, but I sure don't mind. About 3 minutes the song slows down a bit then it builds up with the singer singing strangely sensually as he sings "I won't let you fall in love.."
The drums have that nice cool stereo-ish effect that resembles a bit of DJ Shadow except it's a bit more predictable but fast-paced. Nice subtleties here and there too.
I really can't describe how great this song is, there's so much flair and gusto, it's just so.. WOW for me.

Unexpect - Novae
starting out with some swishy, jingly ambience for about a minute
Then some transylvanian organ starts up, some stabs of guitar and drums build it up.
a few bars of cascading notes, can tell its working towards something.
Arh, I dont like this kind of drumming, the super fast bass-snare-bass-snare. There's a woman singing nicely, sounding quite out of place, and a guy growling. Some strings burst out every now and then. Nice harmonies by the lass. A choir.
Now it like sounds classical music if it was played with distorted guitars, and a violin does it too for one solitary bar... then and bass
harpsichord sound...
ok, this is changing very often an very quickly. very hard to keep up.
now some witch is scowling.
irish sounding violining jig, more harpsichord
3:20
a break, it quietens right down for an ambient second
or 40..
then busts back into it, a now a sitar sounds off and this bit sounds like Atheist, but more repetitive. now section #38 begins, still sounds a bit Atheist like, but with electronic buzzes and strings. there are still 2 minutes left.
its more straight forward here, spazzier than most stuff. but it just cascaded back down into a rightly demented bit. Piano has some stampy sounding bits.
The nice female singer came back, I'd forgotten about her, its been just the growly guy for most of it.
it ended on a re-run of that classical riff.
Definitely NOT an easy listen.. It's more random than a goats breakfast on a weekend of sundays. But, I got used to Spiral Architect, so this can be done too.
Impressive musicianship, and you'd need a good memory to be able to play the ****er. I didn't/don't like that super fast drumming, it didn't happen that often, so thats ok.
Right now, I didn't enjoy it.. in the future... I can see my self getting used to it.
It's too long for such a variable piece.
6.8/10
Also, this one gets a madcore sticker.

Substitute Inc-The Chase (scene 3)
Intro is a cool little loop with some drums and a few picked and wahed guitar notes. It starts getting faster until the drum beat sets out the beat of the song. Once it is in it is a really cool song. I like the wah guitar in the background, and the bassline. The vocals come in and they are really cool. I love this song, its is great. A really bass driven song, I realise now. As the vocals follow the bassline. I also like the lead guitar. In the second section of it a weird sound comes, sounds sort of like a slide dobro with some flanger thrown in, regardless of what it is it is a great sound. A few "breakdowns" near the end of the song where the drums stop for a second then kick back in. Song ends rather abrubtly, but still nicely. Overall it is a 9.5/10, I will definitely be checking more out of these guys.

David Bowie - John I'm Only Dancing
I like Bowie, from what I've heard, but haven't heard much of him. Onwards
Soft acoustic intro, then his unmistakable voice starts kind of grunting away. Cool bass line. He's got lots of weird effects on his voice, which is cool. There's lots of stuff going on. Pretty samey, the bass goes into double time though, which is cool. Longer chorus second time around, I am really enjoying the bass. There's a nice little psychedelic thing in the middle. Pretty samey though, but enjoyable.

All the matches I'm getting for B Boys Will Be B Boys are from Black Star. Eh, I'm downloading it anyway. Even though I've heard Mos Def And Talib Kweli Are Black Star before, I don't remember that song.
Black Star - B Boys Will B Boys
The song begins with a Mos Def rant about famous people. Talib Kweli then tackles the beat....with a list of namedrops. Is this is a song or an interlude?
"Black Star, shinin' shinin', we in the house!" gets repeated several times, before some scratching. Then the beat just loops with a little improvisation. That's all you get for your 2.36.
If I have heard this before, I'm not surprised that I don't remember it. It's basically an interlude. Hell, Black Star are a great project, and Talib Kweli and Mos Def are two of the best rappers in the world. But this is probably the last song I'd suggest for someone. There's half a verse of vocal tradeoffs, and that's all the indication this track has of their collectively talents. Black Star are unique and great. This isn't.

I'm a fairly big fan of the stuff I've heard from Jeff, You Had it Coming, etc, so to be fair I'm expecting to like this.
Jeff Beck - Nadia - 3:50
Starts off with some really bluesy, lonely-sounding solo guitar. Loving it so far.
Some gentle synthy sounds are building in the background, and after 50 seconds or so, percussion cuts in, with a fairly fast-paced, very techno/dance-y beat.
Not much to say, really, as this is what happens throughout the song. That beat in the background, with synths rising, falling and swirling also more or less in the background, and the one guitar, presumably Jeff's, soloing somewhat mournfully over it.
I have a real taste for instrumental music anyway, which probably helps, but this was a great listen.

I shoudn't of picked that track, it was the one I was listening to at the time. I was pretty much listening to it subconsciously, and wasn't aware it was an interlude :) It is indeed Talib Kweli and Mos Def rapping from the Black Star album. If you want a good song from it, I recommend:

Einsturzende Neubauten - Silence is Sexy
An interesting listen, to say the least. It starts off with a bit of silence, then some random sounds, sound like someone is playing around with a record player or something. Then very droning bass and vocals, acoustic bass is very nice. The singer is very close to the mic, you can hear his lips making sounds, him swallowing etc. There is a bit of a pause, which creates a bit of tension, quite cool really. I was expecting something really heavy here, but only drums come in, slow, with brushes. The singer is only saying 'silence is sexy, so sexy'. He finishes another verse with 'silence isn't sexy at all'. He starts speaking in German, I think (judging by the name, they sound very German). At about 4:15 there's some feedback noise. It gradually gets more bust, until about 5:50, when a crowd start singing 'silence is singing' and clapping along. Quite cool :thumb:

Latryx - Bad News
Piano loop, a bit Moby in style, he starts saying stuff right away, drums kick in.
The piano and drum loop repeats with the rapping over the top for a while
The drums stop for a bit at just the right time, before they get too anoying. Just piano and rapping for a bit. Drums come back in again. This happens a few times to keep the music vaired.
There's not much to say about the music, must be a lyrics one.
So, it seems to be about people talking, gossip, news... that kind of thing. "Bad news travels fast, if its about you, you'll probably hear it last" Rapping is thick and fast, there isn't much of the song that goes without it. The word "talk" is used a hell of a lot.
It's kind of hard to follow, but easy enough on these first listens to pick out the main idea: being careful of what you say (I think). The positive message emerges later on in the song.
Towards the end, the rapping stops, some horns come in for a short while and then the song ends.
It's smooth, though I kind of lost interest a bit, but the drums coming in and out brought me back, otherwise the music didn't really seem to matter. He has good rhythm and endurance for rapping those passages with not much of a break.
It was ok, not something I could actively listen to though.

Is that album Sunrise over Sea? That album is like the first one ever to reach the billboard number 1 album in Australia on an independant label.
The Postman Syndrome - Hedgehog's Dilemma
This song rawks, it starts with a cool arpegiated riff, with some vocals. This continues on for a bit. Then some bass comes in, i'm glad to see there's no root notes, it follows the riff. It's cool sounding. He almost has a Maynard element to his singing. Then the chorus comes in, which is much heavier, and he goes to the hardcore vocals, which I've always had a strong dislike for, and this is no exception. His clean vocals over the heavy bits are great, he has a very strong voice. I like the bassist of this band too, his tone is excellent. There is a little quiet bit, around the 5 minute mark, which I like. The drummer is good in this bit too. Then it ends with a chorus out.
9/10, i didn't like the hardcore vox, everything else was flawless. Thanks, Blueser :thumb:

Arcturus - Star Crossed
I like the moody intro with the spiralling piano melodies...it's very classically influenced. There are some background effects that sound like the wind. Suddenly it becomes mid-slow paced metal with theatric vocals...the piano continues. The singer starts to sing in a higher pitch. In the second verse the piano melody simplyfied a bit. Another part comes in with very technical drums and a guitar solo. Then it goes into a part with keyboard melodies...and spoken vocals. This band sounds a bit like Tourniquet...another technical eclectic metal group. I liked how the song started out...the parts with the piano are interesting...but I don't like the metalish parts too much. Good musicians though.

*dib-dib
I simply managed to secure an mp3 called 'March Of The Fire Ants'. No name. So I hope it's the right one.
Mastodon - March Of The Fire Ants
The intro is pretty sludgy and heavy. I can't help but feel I've heard it before.
When the vocals come in, they sound how I'd imagine Jamey Jasta sounds in his own mind. They remind me, somewhat, of Heaven Shall Burn.
The music is pretty proggy. There's elements of several different genres of metal thrown in there - picking individual sections out of the music, I can hear black, death, power, prog, and even nu-metal.
On a negative tip, it gets pretty repetitive - though this feeling disippates the more densely you listen. Such is the nature of prog. More melody would be much appreciated - a lead guitar break at around 2.30 is very welcome, not just for the melody, but from the sludgy mallcore-ish tone of the guitars.
I've heard great things about Mastodon, mainly from br3ad_man. This isn't what I was expecting, though I can see why people would love this band so much. It feels kind of wrong to judge a prog song on only a handful of listens, but never mind. I can see Mastodon growing on me very nicely.

Well, in short, I like this. Most of it, anyway. The guy who raps in the first verse has some interesting rhythms, which is good. I like the way the idea of "throw your hands up" keeps popping up throughout the song.
Yeah, sorry about this. I just don't have a clue what to say for these kinds of songs. It's good, but it doesn't seem to be something really special. Just solid. On a side note, I wasn't expecting this much swearing. I don't mind it, I just wasn't expecting it.
Also noticed there was no variation throughout the song, apart from different people rapping.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Salamandrina
I've heard some pretty good and interesting things from this band before. Can they do it again? Well there were at least 3 different versions so I got the Strategies Against Architecture 3 version.
A few whispery male vocals singing "Salamandrina na na na na" a couple of times, only a single bass note at the start of each bar. Reminds me of a traditional dance from somewhere, not sure where.. in German... and slow...
One guy starts singing in german, while the other voices just go "ahh" to cover the relative silence. The bass is also doing one note at the start of each bar. Heh, one bit sounds like he's saying "cunt". After a bit it goes back to the "Salamandrina na na na na" chorus.
Repeats the above paragraph probably with different words.
A kettle whistle or someone screeching breaks up the middle of the song, very strange as it does sound like a voice at the end.
More words in german, some lines are double or triple voiced.
Salamandrina na na na na. 4 times. Then... some foot stampings and claps come in on the first beat of each bar like the bass note was.
Well... it was certainly different to most songs, not nearly as captivating as other EN songs I've heard though. It could grow on me though.

Sorry I took so long, I kinda forgot about it.
Now, the only other Anathema song I've heard is 'are you there' which is quite lovely, I think Blueser suggested that to me as well. Onwards :smash:
It starts with some great ambience type stuff, then the vocals come in, they are quite loud, I don't really like them much. It gets heavier, I like the bass, it's very audible. Then back to the verse. After a while, his voice changes a bit, it sounds like it's coming through a microphone or something. This is quite a cool piece, but hard to review, because there's not really that much going on. It's a nice mix, the ambience and the heavy bits, they interchange very well. So yeah. I didn't like it as much as 'Are you there' but oh well.

Distorted guitar lead opens it, it sounds like an arabic scale for a bit.. but obviously it's E minor. Bass comes in and it sounds like a cello doing some fast classical runs. It sounds like a classical piece for a band. They don't really interplay too well thoguh.
Now they stopped, drums start up, kind of simple, bass starts up again playing in a stop-start fashion. Guitar isn't playing very much yet, only some small runs at the end of every 8 bars or so.
Now its doing more, kind of funk style guitar, the bass is going more technical here. It is groovy as the name says. Some synth strings are popping in for a chat.
Another classical sounding guitar riff comes in, descending, it sounds familiar. Ooh it harmonizes too, pretty cool sounding.
Funk guitar takes a backseat for the bass solo, sadly it's not that loud, still it's not that hard to hear.
Guitar comes back doing some sea-shanty type runs, which reminds me of a midi I heard once. Synth strings come back to compliment it very well. It's great.
Short breakdown with bass and guitar going pretty wild. Then back to the descending classical riff from before. With some more technical variations added to it in the later parts of it. Cool ending too, kind of typical, typcial for classical music that is, not metal.
That was pretty cool, I liked the guitar work lots. And the sea-shanty bit was fun as they usually are. What I didn't like was the guitar and bass playing too independently of each other. Drums weren't much of a part of it either, but this was mainly a guitar driven piece of metal-classical.

Curse Ov Dialect - Uzbeki Westerns
'Been meaning to check out some stuff from these guys for awhile, but the qeues are too long in slsk! Thanks for the link.:)
Some guy with a high-level intelligence aura comes speaking to open the song. Some low folk-ish guitar strumming to get things going, then a rather trip-hoppy beat welcomes you in on the action.
The beat is pretty dark(mainly because of the guitar), but not so much dreary as it is brooding. The vocalist add to the atmosphere too, with the "aahhs" and the wailing in the background. I have no idea what he's talking about though. Nice.
It progresses with generous doses of bluesy horns and strings nearing 2 minutes
In many ways this song is very strange and a bit out of this world at times, but it also feels somehow familiar, which keeps me from getting alienated from the sound.
Overall, a very interesting listen. I'm watching out for these guys more from now on.

Haven't heard anything before, but I've seen you talking about them, so I have something of an idea what to expect.
The Mass - Mostly Michael Schenker - 5:51
Starts off with a nice riff, nothing spectacular, but good. Reminds me of stoner rock, actually; fairly heavy, and catchy. Vocals come in with a raucous "come on!". The vocals are weird. On the one hand, they're also nothing special; not sung, and just rocky/hardcore style. Occasionally the guy yelps or holds a note though, which gives it a bit of an 80s hair metal feel. I like it.
"Guitar! Drums!" Stylish. And now we get a much more relaxed section. The instruments have all slowed down, and the promised saxophone comes in. Just soothing sounds at the moment.
The song changes tack again, and we get what can only really be described as creepy noises; occasional guitar squeaks and off-beat percussion, always still with the soothing sax over it.
Around 3:00, it changes yet again - more or less discordant bashing on drums (and other instruments), with saxophone squeaks and honks, too. I think around here I'll temporarily give up describing what happens - it's just all out strange.
Wow. Now we're back in the middle of a Gerry Rafferty song. Occasional drum wankery and a nice sax solo over the top. Oh. Gerry takes some crack, and the sax sounds almost violin-esque - squeaky and fast. All hell is breaking loose, I'm not sure what's going on :(
And that's more or less how it ends. A more incoherent review I have never seen, but it fits the character of the song. Very strange. And it didn't remind me at all of Michael Schenker.
7.5/10 I liked it. I'm just not sure why.

Skindred - Set It Off
Quick jungly drum intro.. then Jamaican guy with kind of strange voice, singing in one of those Jamaican styles. theres also a guitar note with a whammy bar drop each bar.
The next bit has distorted chunky guitar and the vocalists high bits sound kind of bad.. wrong, he sounds like he is really straining to do it... the drums are going between fastish jungle loops and some more simple beats.
Theres an even heavier guitar riff with some nu-metal growls of "set it off" and some other lines.
It repeats those sections again..
At about 2:05 it goes more mellow, much nicer on the ears. There's some high vocal bits here and sound a lot better, nice harmonies too. Pretty soon it goes back to the previous line of high singing, and it just sounds all wrong again.
Back to the old heavier bits again, and I'm not enjoying this. There's a kind of choir aah-ing along with the "set it off" bit. Still it sounds weird. Ending comes soon after
Well... it was a strange mix of jamaican, jungle beats, and metal-ish guitar. An interesting musical mix, but it didn't work for me at all.
I think if it was more melodic like that bit in the middle, and without the heavier bits, it could have worked. The mixing and matching seemed pretty wild, and those high vocals really bugged me outside of the mellow bit.
4/10 - sorry, I just didnt like this one.

Antimatter - The Art Of A Soft Landing
Well, it immediately reminds me of Anathema, which can only be a good thing.
An ambient style intro eventually gives way to a female vocal, that I'm pretty certain is backed up by a male, giving the song that SHODAN-effect on the melody.
The song doesn't really change much. There's occasional blips of change in the percussion. The male voice rises to become more prominent. Quite why he reminds me of Scott Stapp I don't know.
Ooh, a change. Some distortion comes in, with a heavily distorted guitar added sound effects over the top. After a while of this heavier section, the man screams, which gives way to a piano line. Not just any piano line, but the piano line from Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Whether that was intentional or not I don't know.
Overall it's a pretty perfect summation of the genre. There ain't a lot of innovation, but ther doesn't ned to be. A good specimin of gothic music, I'd say.

My first Roots experience.
The Roots - The Return to Innocence Lost - 11:55
I hope this is the right song, because it's twelve minutes long.
Starts off with a lilting, xylophone-type sound. The kind of thing that brings to mind nurseries and playschool.
And the lyrics start..this is where I falter in reviewing such music. It's hard to review it, without just repeating the lyrics. Iai is right, anyway, hard-hitting is definitely the phrase for it. It basically tells a story, from a third-person perspective, of a woman who is abused by an alcoholic husband, and then the (short) life of her first born son. I don't want to say too much in case others want to hear it; I imagine it's be much more effective without having had it spelled out to you beforehand.
I suppose I could go into rhyme schemes and things, but I don't really think I could do that either. One thing I will mention is that I like the gentle acoustic sample (I think) used for the majority of the song, after that nursery intro, and I really liked the final line, returning to the title phrase.
If I have any complaints, it's that I wasn't overly keen on her voice, though it wasn't terrible.

Frank Klepacki - C&C Thang
Like most video game music, this is clearly indebted to minimalism. The problem with a lot of minimalism is that it gets very boring, but this manages not to.
The bass, which drives the song, drops out in parts, but otherwise underpins everything with 2 riffs it swaps between. The drums are fairly simple, but they do their job. The melody is taken by what sounds like a MIDI flute, and occasionally, vocals, guitars, and snyth instruments I don't recognize - probably some sort of brass.
This actually sounds bizzarely like a piece of coursework I did not so long ago. Hmm.
It's not the best piece of game music I've ever heard (it ain't Nobou), but it does the job, and it's quite enjoyable. Throwaway, yet punchy.
6/10.

It's been a while since i've done one of these, so bear with me.
The Afghan Whigs
Starts off pretty slow, driven by the slow bass line and the soothing piano going. This leads into the vocals, which are relaxing with an occasional forte of piano and strummed guitar chords and small short licks.
It's kind of a jazz/blues thing going on here, i like it so far.
Soon the vocals change from a man to a woman, then return back to the mans vocals after this breakdown.
This music is very relaxing, but it's a step or two above elevator music. I really like the vocals, and the way the guitars and piano work together. The bass work is also very soothing.
As the song progresses the piano deviates a bit with some nice little licks.
Overall, 7.8/10. I enjoyed it very much, especially the vocals.

Age Of Silence - Auditorium Of Modern Movements
Arcturus connections here, even before I listen to the song. But onward!
It sounds semi-random at the start, mainly ochrestrated, but with a drumkit. Very strange sounding. Some piano and quick giutar flash by. It sounds a bit like Arcturus, but retarded eagles chasing rabbits. There are some electronic drums too.. with an olde english orchestration bit.. interesting
When the singing comes in it sounds more normal, structured. Almost every single vocal is harmonized, sounds kind of nice. The music sounds so much like Arcturus' Sham Mirrors, except the piano sounds more real. It's heavy but very melodic and bouncy, and some of the orchestral instruments are ever present.
Singing stops for a flute bit, sounds a bit celtic, but I'd say it was just put that way because it sounded nice. Theres still the chunky guitar there, it's not too loud either, some high bits too.
The beat straightens out to a more marchy one, some cool vocal interplay, a bit like those done by Spiral Architect. I'm not sure what he is saying, it's just very melodic and nice to listen to that I don't really care.
Back to the bouncier beat pretty soon, piano joins in this bit soon after and it overshadows the rest of it, just too loud. But, then it stops and that is the end.
Then it ends once again on some semi-random piano, which might be the intro to the next song, or looney tunes.
There were quite a few good and bad things about this song.
Good: it was interesting, yet fairly easy to listen to, very melodic, and the instrument playing was good, guitar wasnt as technical as Arcturus, but this isnt Arcturus.
Bad: The mix of instruments worked well, except the piano near the end, and the semi-random bits were a bit awkward. Also, I found it hard to keep concentration up, even for only 3:30. With the vocalist constantly in harmony everything just seemed to melt together into one blob, if anything, the vocals were too melodic.
I don't know how much of Arcturus was in this band, but the music sounded VERY similar.
And if only the singer didn't double every single word with a harmonizing note....
8.5/10

Starts with an acoustic chord pattern in 3/4 guided by a string ensemble of sorts. This guy has a very intimate folky way of singing and writing...in this song anyway. It's a nice ballad type song...not too emotional, more relaxed and mellow. The chorus is a bit more dynamic and upbeat than the verses, with a rimshot playing a waltzing beat. I like it when he holds a falsetto for a few seconds and the instruments run dead for a few seconds. This is very rootsy music. The drums have a marching beat right before the second verse...and there seems to be a light backing tone. The climax is also solid, where there seems to be more complementary melody and light female backing vox...very soothing. The song ends with a cello melody and the acoustic riff and some backing vox.
I like the song, although it's far from original...it's solid. I like the light backing vocals near the end, that complement the singers voice well. Good song, but nothing that blows my mind. 7.1/10

Second Duck themed FL in a row for me, strange.
Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather For Ducks
Haha, cool intro, sounds like it's from a kids show
"All the ducks are swimming in the water, balda ralda ralda"
Acoustic guitar does come in, sounds a little bit like John Butler the way they cut it up and put it together. A light drum beat comes in, the music sounds very happy. The guitar and some other sounds are all put into a major key, some strings in the background hold a note, and jump around at the end of some bars.
A quick break of just guitar and bass, then it all comes back with the intro sample included. The sample stops, and there's some scratching to be heard in the distance. The music seems to thin a bit, then returns with a horn loop comes in, very happy sounding again.
Eh.. jazz bit? It's a break in the song, following the beat. The flow in and out of it works well, but the section itself sounds out of place in this song.
The happy bit comes back, the horn loop is there, and there's a trumpet playing some lead. Then everything stops, the duck sample returns with some ambient major chord, the light scratching, the horn goes mad for a short bit, and then it fades out.
Yay for feel-good music, it was nice to listen to. Good music for a having a good day to. They paced it well, building it up and dropping off to keep it interesting. That jazzy bit belongs elsewhere, everything else was great.

Reel Big Fish - Skatanic
Starts with a weird avantgarde brass, a fading chord...and weird hissing sound. The brass strikes simulaneously with the opening bass drum. A cool bassline comes in with a drum break...until it comes into a more groovy reggea-ish drums. Cool trompet riffage...and a very high pitched bassline along with the main one. It switches very subtlely from heavy to melodic parts. A cool tempo change when the song turns into ska. The brass section plays some familiar melodies that fit quite well within the context of the track. The second verse has backing vocals. The song flows well despite the very frequent change in dynamic. I like the jammish twist around 2 minutes into the song...very cool. It stops around 2:20...and in comes a small bassline...with ride work ride into the reggea part with the high bassline.
Cool song, despite 3:15 long...alot of interesting twists. I like the psychotic vocals in the chorus alot...and the frequent tempo changes. Very tight stuff...I enjoyed this listen.8/10

There, we go. Me and my slow connection. She's Joao Gilberto's daughter, right? Her voice is real smooth and airy, more than pleasant. It's all in sung in Portugeuse so I'm not exactly sure what she's wisping on about but it sounds lovely. The groove is laid back and gallops along at a lazy brazilian stroll. Think about sitting on a beach in Rio and a sunset serenade and you've got this song encapsulated on a postcard. I like the electronic flourishes and what sounds like a bit of faux scratching towards the end, works well. Makes me wondering if the horns on here are sampled. Either way, it's very atmospheric and very approachable.
This is very relaxing, you can hear the crickets and birds chirping if you listen real close at the end and start. Everything about this song is so smooth it almost feels restrained. I'm really digging her voice a whole lot and her little sigh towards the last third of the song as she vocalizes along with the melancholy horns is very sensual. I'm really glad I checked this song out, it's downbeat but definitely not depressing, reminiscent a bit of trip hop but with a distinct brazilian take. I'll have to check out more of her stuff.

I wanted to do that Tweaker song, but I can't find it so if I got the right song..
Spaceman 3 - Revolution
Their name seeems familiar, but I guess this is the first time I'm listening to their stuff. A loud, rough, chunky guitar riff opens the song, I guess you could call this shoegazer-ish. So that goes on and on for more than a minute or so, with the vocals muttering and some nice tom-taps to build up the momentum. So far I'm liking it.
In the two minute mark the singer, or should I say, speaker goes about his musings. "The time is right," "I'm tired, so tired," he says, among his other lines. His voice fits in a blues-rock band. Not much change going on until nearing the end, where the instruments gradually get louder, with the bass grooving its way to my ears. Then it gets noisier and noisier, and the tempo getting faster, until it ends abruptly. Okay, that was a bit weird.
It looks like the whole 6 minutes can fit into 2. There's really just 3 parts into the song: the intro buildup, the lyrics part, and the loud, noisy ending. The band spent so much time in the segments, that it was a bit hard for me to digest it. But I like the bluesy bits, so it might grow on me. So all in all it ain't such a bad song at all. I'll be looking out for better Spacemen 3 songs.

I dreamed I threw Jennifer Lopez off a cliff last night and yelled out "I heard you liked the feeling of freefall, enjoy your last one." But she'd kidnapped some people and was really good at martial arts, using it for evil.

Dysrhythmia - And Just Go
I checked these guys out ages ago on a reccomend from Coypu, they had just demo's then and those were really noisy and hard to hear.
Now they sound alot cleaner. It opens clean, sparse guitar with delay. A train like snare drum thing builds things up, and a bass guitar (sounds like Justin Chancellor tone) plays a main riff. Guitar feedback is there, but not standing out.
The drums back off and start playing rim shots and hi-hats with. The time signatures are unusual, snare comes back and it's loud, building tension and speed. The guitar is playing some sort of ambient-but-not thing, it's not quiet, but it doesnt stand out at all. The music does have a post rock sound about it, but heavy. This goes on until about 3 mins, then it drops off for a short bit.
The next part is more guitar driven, louder, it reminds me of a band called Season. And there's something abstractly Toolish about this.. but it's not in the sound. Strange. It goes on, changes without being in foreground.
Things happen, I don't know.. it's numbed my sense of listening. After 6 minutes, it's finished and I have no idea what just happened.
Something about it made it very hard to follow actively. It sounds too heavy for passive listening music, but that seems to be the only way to take it in. It was a weird experience, in a good way. It will take a lot of getting used to. I don't know what else to say about it, it needs to be heard. Very interesting.
8.6/10

The Grand Silent System - Champion
its starts with a guitar on some effect, vocals and drums on some sort of phaser which slowly comes in over the course of the intro. vocals and style of this kind of remind me of vex red. Then a drop out which leaves a guitar riff, kind of heavy, which the rest of the band join in with after a bit. back into the first section with full backing band. vocal drop out after this and the drummer adds fills. Then into some sort of brigde with that heavy riff from before, vocals with some effect on them.
Into what seems to be a chorus, vocals keep that effect, guitars using another heavyish riff. The heavyness is dropped after this into a clean picking guitar kind of verse with backing band. Another clean riff follows with two vocals, the effect ones from before and normal singing over. Into an outro where vocals are keep on the same effect with dist guitar, ends with a fill the whole band follow.
i really liked this song, reminded me of vex red in a certain kind of way. kind of progressive for a 4mintue song....8/10. sorry if that a crap review but its my first time at this.

Tim Tetlow - Mind Is Moving
Hey, I haven't heard any new IDM in a while. Theres a soft synth sliding around in a seemingly random sci-fi way, but this pattern repeats, and some Aphex Twin like drum patterns. It's repetitive, but it builds slowly over time.
Theres some deep bass present, but I can't hear it too well on these speakers, some quiet counter melody plays around in there, it sounds transparent somehow..
After about 2:30 the slidy synth goes away, and its just schizo electonic drums, bass and some breathy ambient melodies.
The slidey melody is present at times but very quiet. It comes back to the forefront about a minute after it goes, theres now some bell sounds accompanying it.
The drums and everything have stopped now, just the bells, slidey bit, and breath sounds take it to the end.
Well the only version I found was a streaming one, it is the full thing but it fades out every 30 seconds or so of continuous play.. that made proper listening really hard.
I didnt think it was very interesting to be honest, but maybe it was the interruptions that kept it from me. I dont mind this kind of music, but to me some songs are a bit pointless, no real direction or anything.
Still, I will give it 6.5/10 for the benefit of the doubt, after all it might have sounded good if I was able to listen without interrupions.

Bob Marley - Caution 2:42
I was looking for the alchemist one as I saw them live and wanted to see how they sounded on record but I could only find this bob marley track. I'm not too big on reggae so we'll see how this goes.
The song starts with what I assume is a pretty generic reggae backing, organ, drums bass. The guitar then joins in with some tremelo picking.
The unmistakeable voice of bob marley enters at 0:19, with the help of backing singers who appear to be chanting at first and then harmonising with marleys singing.
The song doesn't really have anything really in it to interest me a huge amount. For the majority of the song it continues in the same way.
5/10
Sorry I didn't write much of a review but I couldn't really think of much else to say.
My Recommendations:
Lamb - Gabriel (Chilled out triphop)
Har Mar Superstar (Funky pop  )
Jeff Buckley - Forget Her
Ryan Adams - English Girls Approximately (Acoutic country tinged rock)
These should be relatively easy to find.

Lamb - Gabriel
I wanted to check out Har Mar Superstar because I heard he's a goofball and from the pictures of him I've seen, it seems like it. But I'll settle for this until I remember to check him out. Haven't heard of theses.
There's a nice, dreamy keyboard running through this song and the singer has a a pretty decent voice. She sounds familar, though I'm not sure from where. She's got a kind of AOR singer/song writer voice going on, but it's ok. It's got the kind of typical trip-hoppish beat and it's full of electronica atmospherics.
From the start, it's fairly sleepy, building up slowly as each new element comes in, the strings and all the little electronic touches make for a nice build up. The drums seem to pile one onto another as the song goes on, growing slowly louder. At certain points, the singer's voice does this weird little wavering thing when she holds notes, I can't tell if it's natural or an effect. Interesting.
It's pretty good, although her voice gets a little dull for me for some reason. The song's build-up is pretty cool. Nice and chill song but I didn't get too into it.

I'll do Lee "Scratch" Perry.
First of all, let me just say how awesome I think Lee Perry is and there is nothing wrong with smoking too much pot. :thumb:
The song is a very groovin' reggae tune. I like the percussion the most even though I play guitar. The drums just give it a nice rockin' feel. Definitly has got the cool upstroke feel on guitar which I am personally a huge fan of.
4/5
I say...
Jerry Garcia and David Grisman - Shady Grove(a nice bluegrassy tune)

Also, I'm not sure three lines constitute a review.

I apologize for that, I was in kind of a rush to go to work and saw that Lee Perry song(which I have heard). I own Return of the Super Ape - Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters and I believe it is the 5th or 6th track on there.
To Add On The Review:
Another cool feature about this song is the awesome bass line. I jammed to this song with a couple friends the other day. It wasnt the best mainly because we were lacking that cool keyboard in there and all of those crazy cymbal crashes and maracas. And Lee Perry's voice.
Still a 4/5 from me.
Now can someone review mine please. Thanks. :thumb:
