Ok.. everyone brags about Thrice and says they are amazing but I really don't get what is the big deal about them. So I figured I'd give them another try by listening to the song Bartender recommended.

The Melting Point of Wax - Thrice

Ok, It starts off with some pretty good guitar playing and also it's pretty grooving. Then we go to the lyrics, the guy's vocals aren't that great, but the beat behind him is pretty good so I'm flowing. Now it's going into a chorus and it sounds decent. Back to the verse, I don't like this guys voice that much. A bridge, nothing that special here. I like the line "there is a promise of safety" very nice lyrically but vocally it's bothering me. Ok we had a long break from the chorus and now we are back in it. The outro was pretty good. Hm. It's not that I don't like it, it's just that in my opinion it wasn't amazing and as good as people say they are. Maybe I should try some stuff from IOS?

It's the only Thrice song I really like, I don't really see what's so good about them either. I just really love that song, for the lyrics and the shout of "Screaming up to me" in the second verse. In other songs, his voice gets on my nerves as well.

This isn't me calling dibs by the way, for anyone else wishing to have a go.

Gatsby's American Dream - Counterfeit Language

Starts with a punk riff and a punk beat that stops for a moment with small tom break. The song is definately more interesting than the average punk music...with some sudden tempo changes and a bass player that doesn't just play along with the guitars. Good production and vocal harmonies. That said, I applaud them for doing different things structure-wise. I've just never been a fan of punk music ingeneral...however I like the slower melodic part of the song near the end. Nothing I would buy...but definately better than most punk. 7/10

Christopher 'O Riley - Karma Police

I really enjoyed this one. I've always loved the sound of classical influenced piano...it's a totally different song now than the anthem that Radiohead wrote. It's much more free flowing, especially with the vocal lines played on piano. Definately a cool listen....it gives room for imagination too, as you try to visualize what other pop songs would sound like if they were played by a classically trained pianist. Although comparing this is really foolish, I like this version better than the original, which is one of Radioheads most overrated songs anyway. 8/10

Nah, I had lots of spare time over the last month and a bit, but things will probably get busy again soon and this will have to take a back seat...

The Tea Party - Walking Wounded

I'm listening through headphones and I think this is a poor quality mp3 :/ but oh well.

Quick chanty intro, with a middle eastern reed instrument thing.. and pizzicato strings.

Vocals come in almost straight away, It has a straightforward rock sound, except there are some strings, a choir, and few ethnic instruments along for the ride.

It's standard structure makes it somewhat predictable, and the singer is nearly constantly singing, taking up too much space.. until about 3:30 where its all instrumental for a bit. Theres some more singing towards the end, but it's not too dense then.

It's a fairly average song, the only thing that really stands out to me is the extra instruments.. I know its not a nice thing to say, but it reminded me of Nickelback.
I've only heard a few Tea Party songs, they sounded better than this, and I know they aren't all the same like Nickelback :/
It's probably why I hardly listen to this anyway.

Blur - Good Song - 3.08

Another band i've never really understood is blur when ever you think you have them sussed they completely throw you. Anyways I haven't heard any of their newer stuff so i'm looking forward to this.

The song kicks in straight away with a pretty basic drum beat and an amazing hypnotising guitar riff over the top. It almost reminds me off a music box. The vocals kick in properly at about 0:34, nothing special going on vocally. Then a basic but fitting spacey solo come's in. One thing I quite dislike is the backing vocals in the chorus it makes it seem quite cheesy to me. The vocals then take a different turn, almost sounding out of tune at some points. The song continues on with the same underlying riff and drum pattern.

Overall interesting but nothing that would encourage me to buy the cd

Porcupine Tree - Blackest Eyes

Octaves of the intro, sounds alright. Feedback builds.. then BLAM, an RATM like riff blast, this is unlike the other Porcupine Tree songs I've heard. I wasn't expecting that.

0:54
Now this is like what I know of PT, rock with acoustic guitars and clean singing. It seems fairly easy to listen to, though not as melodic and welcoming as the other songs I know.
Into the chorus I guess, the singers vocal line makes it sound wrong, its like Coldplay with some heavy guitars every now and then... The vocal harmony for the last line of the chorus seems way out of place.

Then a bridge and the same chorus again.

2:45 brings the return of the ratm riff. Then from 3:15 is a really warm ambient keyboard bit, this is nice, singer sings the verse over it and I realized its just the verse without guitars or drums. Then more of the heavy riff and it ends soon after.

It's not bad, but I dont like this song as much as others I've heard by them.
Its the vocals that take the shine off it, I tried listening with vocal removal and it did sound better. If they changed the melodies around a bit, I probably would have liked it more.

George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag

This is a good song. Starts off with a cool little acoustic riff, which is cool indeed. I like the drums as well in the intro, they were cool. The vocals are quite nifty too; not great, but they fit the music well. I don't like when he raises his voice too much, though. And it's nice to see horns in the song. The bassline is very cool as well. The solos, whilst not a shredder (aw) are d amn cool. The key change is good as well, it saves the song from boredom (funnily enough, I was just thinking how boring the song was getting about 3 seconds before that key change). It's a cool song, but I wouldn't get excited about it.

Wow, this song brigns back many gaming memories and nostalgia. I actually have the game sound track, I got it with a video game magazine subscription (I was in grade school). Dave Brubeck - Take Five - 5:26

Starts of with just percussion, soon joined by a cool little repeating piano melody though. Then, soon after, we get a really nice, mellow saxophone? playing the lead of the song.

When the sax drops off, the drums become the main focus of the song, whilst the piano continues its repeating melody in the background. The solo lasts quite a while (up to about 4:20), until the piano begins to quiet down a bit, and the drums resume cymbal-tapping (and calm down on all other fronts) as the wind instrument (whatever it is) reenters.

Kind of a difficult song to review, especially knowing as little jazz as I do. I liked the main melody the lead instrument was following (before and after the drum solo). The drum solo itself felt a bit overlong, but when it was happening it didn't sound forced, it sounded quite natural, quite organic, which was good.

8/10. I definitely enjoyed it, I'm just not sure why.

Trippy stuff, kind of like the Flaming Lips. Not really my style but I did kind of like it. It kind of sets a relaxing mood, kind of ambient and stuff. Atmosphere - Gods Bathroom Floor
Atmosphere was a rap group that someone on my school recommended not too long ago...but I haven't heard this song yet. It starts with a soulful bass riff and a loungy saxophone riff, with Slug rapping various random words. There are some very fuzzy samples throughout the song, and the production is very introvert....really nice. The lyrics (they seem autobiographical) and flow by really good and that's what I like in hip-hop. Good stuff indeed. 8/10

My pick:

dEUS - Put The Freaks Up Front

dEUS - Put The Freaks Up Front

This was an interesting listen. I don't really know what genre it is, alternative I suppose...
I don't even know what other bands they sound like, since I've really never heard anything like it before. It sounds a bit like Regurgitator, in parts. There's lots of harmonies and melodies going on all around the place. It would be a more interesting listen in headphones, though I can't be bothered finding them. It starts with a really high pitched guitar sound. I don't like the dude's vocals much, they sound a bit nothing-ish to me, too generic, to like-everyone-else. Oh well. It fits the music decently enough. It is a fairly basic sort of song - chords and stuff. The random things in the background make it pretty interesting though.

Spinal Tap - Sex Farm

Starts off with a metal riff. Breaks into lyrics, pretty funny (since that is what Spinal Tap is about) but not making me laugh. They almost remind me of the Darkness only they don't suck. The chorus is kind of bad, also the vocals are very low hard to make out in the song. Interesting drum beat. But mostly it's not very interesting. There is some keys occasionally through out the piece but they don't really attribute that well. I don't really like this song. It just reminds me of hair spray and bad 80s metal. Yuck.

What can I say but man the synth on this is cheesy :p . The song starts of with this synth riff and the vocals come in about 0:16. I suddenly get that feeling that you get when your not sure whether or not you've heard a song before, I get a familiar feeling from this song but I don't think i've ever heard it before
At about 1:00 the guitar creeps in repeating a lick behind the vocals, the song then returns to how it was before. One of the annoying things of this song is the reptitiveness of the lyrics, there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation in them. The song leads out with a typical rock anthem solo.
I'm still rather confused as to what genre to put this in  probably cheesy synth rock :)

anyways not my sort of thing

Ludovico Einaudi - Le Onde

EDIT: I typed out a fairly long review for this, but it was deleted! So I wrote a much shorter review, unfortunately :(

What a beautiful song. It starts with a arpeggiated run in the left hand, in 6/8 time, and then the right hand starts playing around in the higher register, in crotchets over the left hand. It does this for about half the song: all the key changes and everything, it's awesome. The second part is even more incredible - it is so unbelievably peaceful. A must listen, for anyone. The dynamics, and the whole feel in general make it a very special listen.

I apologise for the short review, but I am happy to give this song a 10/10, and will definately be checking more of his stuff out.

Falco - Rock Me Amadeus - 3:15

Starts with a woman's cry of "ooh! rock me amadeus!" with a couple of drum beats, then a male version of it, which repeat many times over.

Singing in a different language! I haven't got a chance of knowing what they're saying, despite the fact I think it's German.

It's pretty much pointless giving a blow-by-blow of this song - you either know what it sounds like or you don't. It's parodied in the Simpsons; "ooh, help me Dr Zaius!"

Let's be honest - it's crap, 80s, synth-drenched gimmick-pop. However, it still gets 10/10, just because it is crap, 80s, synth-drenched gimmick-pop. Besides, it was on the Simpsons.

Dragonforce .3/10??? ArghhhHhhh! oh well.

-------

Massive Attack - Angel

I love this intro. I think's a low C playing on bass, which is quite low, and gives it a nice little drone feel. Then a cool little electronic drum kit comes in, and all these other cool effects, which give the song an awesome ambience-esque, floaty feel. This random synth plays three notes every so often. Clicking sticks and bongos start playing as well. When all these things are played together, it's quite cool. Then the vocals come in, which I don't particularly enjoy. There's a break in the vocals, and there is a weird, yet cool, thing done to the drums, the hi hat in particular. The next vocal break, there's a cool little guitar solo thing, which is very enjoyable. It's fairly repetitive, with all these random effects and different instruments. I'd write more, but I have to go to college now.

7.5/10 - the vocals, in my opinion let it down a bit. Would of been an excellent instrumental.

Apart from the genre description, no idea what to expect.
Regurgitators - G7 Dick Electro Boogie - about 3:20, I think

Starts off with some strange noises, might be distorted vocals, before going into a mid-paced beat rhythm. Vocals come in, low pitched and fast, I can't really make out anything that's being said. Around 0:39 there's some tinkling bells in the background.

Vocals stop, and the tinkling bells are joined by various metallic noises, but not for long, as those low vocals come back in. Different tone of distorted vocals around 1:25, though I've still no idea what they're saying.

Oh wait, I think I picked out "bad karma" around 1:55. Anyway, 2:11 and we're back on those tinkling and metallic noises, but with what could be disc scratching going on as well. It just carries on like this, cycling between the three (low, rushed vocals, tinkly metallics and just beats) until the end, which is very abrupt.

Well it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't particularly good either. Not my kind of thing.

Dillinger Escape Plan - We Are the Storm

I've heard a little bit of their stuff a year or two back. I kinda liked it, but never became much of a fan... But anyway, this song starts out pretty crazy, which isn't a big surprise. I like that the weird-timeness doesn't sound forced, like some bands sometimes do. Vocals aren't anything special, but they go great with the music. This is pretty good stuff. And what's this? A mellow part? I never heard anything like this from them. I can dig it. And now back to the heavy stuff for the ending.

I was feeling it, now that my tastes have expanded I like them a lot more than I did in the past. 8/10, good stuff.

My choices:

Beulah - Gene Autry - indie-pop
Calexico - Bloodflow - southwestern... whatever it is
Elysian Fields - Stop the Sun - mellow alt-rock, nice female vocals
Isis - Swarm Reigns (Down) - sludgy and spacy metal

Elysian Fields - Stop The Sun (edit!!!)

Starts with a deformed electronic noise...and these really hot female vocals come in...geez...what a sexy voice (her name escapes me). The song is sung in a very natural, effortless way. It's got this sensual, suspense vibe...that you get from bands like Hooverphonic and Portishead...only the production is 'warmer'. It's got some piano melodies, smooth bassline, and a basic beat....I like this song alot. There are this weird little piano solo's near the end that seem out of place with the beat...really nifty. I like the song alot...because of the vocals alone, which I had the pleasure of hearing on the Lovage record too. 8.5/10

I think I'll get some more Elysian Fields. God, I really should learn checking my spelling before I submit posts :/

Meanwhile I recommend:

Team Sleep - Kool Aid Party

This is a cool song. It features Mike Patton's unmistakable voice on vocals. It starts with ocean sounds, and a kind of guitar reverb sound. Then a haunting riff comes in, on guitar with a big echo sound over it. All these different instruments and sounds come to life, and there is some kind of chanting going on, just before Patton's vocals come in. They are heavily altered with, but are unmistakably Patton's. It is a very slow song, but it has tons of atmosphere to it. There are loads of ambient sounds to it, and the haunting arpegiated riff keeps repeating throughout the whole song. It's pretty intense at times. Since it's so slow, it seems to go on forever, which is probably the only fault I have with it. It would be an awesome 3 minute song.

7/10. Not brilliant, but still decent enough.

Ok this song is prolly the best outkast song, its fast-paced and has some political lyrics... sorta, i aslo found one that has outkast and rage against the machine, RATM supplies the fast rock, its alot better than the straight up hiphop one.
All in All this song is ok, not something i would listen to though.

Okay

The song goes right into the vocals, and the guitar is playing rythm, as are the other instruments. The singers rap in a very lam way, but of course that is probably intentional. They give it a very hilarious/interesting sound. It slightly reminds me off a Weird Al song. Overall, the songs hilarious.

Rusted Root - Send Me On My Way

I know I've heard this song before (only once or twice), and I liked it so this is more than a great reason to get it.

12 string guitar beggining, a guy starts chanting, it sounds a bit like the Lion King music, bass drum and hi hats. Theres some scrapey percussion thing and hand drums used here too.
Theres some really nice vocal harmonies in here - another guy and a girl joining the lead singer. A pan flute joins the parade. After a while the full drumkit comes in here and doubles the speed.

It doesn't sound very jammy in this recording, except for a short break of flute and percussion, I can imagine them implementing a jam session in live shows though. I call this style roots rock... its similar to John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd etc.

Theres a marimba or similar in there too.. then towards the end it slows, some instruments drop off and it finishes

After all that... I dont like analyzing this song (I got rid of a lot of what I had written) because its just so much more enjoying just to kick back and hear it.
It's rather bouncy, energetic and fun. Melodic, nice on the ears. Simple in structure Builds and fades well, so its doesnt suddenly start or finish.

8.5/10 - it's really enjoyable but it didn't really strike me as special for that top score.

Pretty much no experience of this band before.
Wumpscut - Black Death (french concept) - 5:50

Starts off with what I think is a synth tone, then what sounds like someone hitting a mic, and a loop of a quarter second of speech, is played over a woman speaking French. 0:53 it gets dense and close, with menacing vocals - reminds me somewhat of VNV Nation (an industrial band).

Around 1:00 it goes loud, and heavy, sounds like another form of industrial. The mechanical riffing is fairly fast-paced.

Then it goes back to the synth and female French, before what I think are German vocals, and a lower synth tone, lead back into the dense, claustrophobic heavy industrial riffing.

It pretty much continues in this way, going from the soft, female vocalled French w/synth to the dense riffage, sometimes adding extra or removing surplus tones and sounds from the quiet part. Often the German vocals lead the one into the other.

Near to the end, we get English, male vocals during a quiet bit, before a sample leads back into a final, even more chaotic heavy part to finish on.

Well, that was excellent. It's a fairly intense song; the contrast works well, and the dense industrial sections remind me of another band I'm listening to at the moment called Axis of Perdition (though Axis.. have black metal influence as well).

Bruford - Five G
Funky slap bass intro with hi hats. Then guitar joins and does a run-up riff a few times. I think I heard horns in there somehwere too. Then a keyboard joins and its rather spazzy. At 1:20 the music changes, going more melodic for a bit, theres a guitar solo. Then back to the run up riffs, though maybe a bit different this time, the guitar solo comes back over this.

It just keeps going and changing and guitar soloing, I think I lost interest in it because I'm 2:30 into the next song on the playlist and didn't really notice... not a good sign.

It reminds me of Gordian Knot - Code Anticode just without the crunch of distortion, and a bit more jazziness. The intstruments music is pretty technical in execution except probably the drums.

6/10 It's technical, unusual, and all that comes with jazz/fusion, but very little in the interesting factor for me. It just faded out without any climax or conclusion or anything..

I had written a longer review but my pc crashed and I lost it :upset:

I've never heard of this band before and I was very intrigued by the progressive power metal title.

The song begins with a very cool bass riff. The guitars slowly build up from underneath the bass and at 0:26 when it all starts to kick off. The guitar and bass then play the same riff in unison although with a few alterations everynow and then. At 1:10 the song changes pace into a heavier section. At 1:33 a very techincal sounding bass riff is played. Spoken word vocals enter at 2:17 over cleanly played guitar. The vocals properly start at 2:43 I enjoy the singer although he isn't anything special, it is a pretty generic power metal vocalist. The song continues along in pretty much the same vain for a couple of minutes. At 4:49 the song changes pace again to a clean guitar and some backing vocals or synth's i'm not quite sure. The singing re enters at 5:18 I really like this part its one of favourite parts of the song. At 5:52 the distorted guitars come back into the mix. The song carries on in this vain for the rest of the song.

Overall I really enjoyed the song. Alot of the bass reminded me alot of cynic in a few places. Overall I highly recommend this song for anyone who enjoys techincal or progressive metal.

8.5/10

Axis Of Perdition - To Walk The Corridors Of Hell
I'm only slightly familiar with black metal, but I know it's general sound and I'm not much of a liker of it.

The intro doesnt sound too bad, guitar with AUDIBLE DRUMS :O featuring some double bass machine guns. Now the vocalist (plural?) comes in growling something in all capital letters, still it's not too overpowering vs the other instruments.

I can see the spectrum analyzer bands on winamp peaking at nearly every frequency. I can hear it too, but that's the black metal for you.

I'm completely lost and have no clue what's happened, but its a hell of a lot faster than before and there's a tapping guitar solo now. Slowed down again, theres a relatively quiet bit here, I actually could make out some of the lyrics, only because it's the song title.

It fades out from whatever is going on at 5:30 or so and some noisy fan blade electronic feedback solo finishes the track, probably the intro to the next one.

This is a disgusting thing to listen to due to the noise of the recording and the noise of the vocals, but some interesting guitar bits shine through every now and then. Near impossible to follow, and I don't think I have the patience to get used to it either. Despite saying all that, it wasn't that bad actually, it just seemed 'right' for some reason.
The one thing that surprised me was even though the recording was typicaly BM distorted, the instruments were balanced and the guitar was not the only thing right in your face.

5/10 - I guess you need to be a BM fan to enjoy this kind of thing.

Battles - Tras 2 - 5:50

Starts off with what I can only describe as weird noises. It might be a very distorter/altered guitar picking. I think I hear a bassline in the background.

20 seconds in; I give up on the play-by-play approach, I don't think it's going to work. This is just strange. It's a mass of what could just as easily be electronically produced sounds as actual instruments. That said, it's not just a morass of these sounds, it has some structure, and follows a main melody the whole way through.

Theremain elements seem to be picked guitar, which is pretty good, and what could be bass in the background. I'm not noticing the bass sounds as much now (about 3:30) as at the start of the song. There's also drums, which sound physical (rather than programmed), and sound like they could have a tambourine on them, as each strike also makes a jangly tambourine noise. Might be a cymbal though.

From about 4:00 onwards, it's just drums, playing more or less the same rhythm, with a little variation now and then. Surprisingly it's not that bad to listen to, I quite like it. Towards the end I think I can make out the sound of a record coming to an end on a player. The rhythm gets less and less varied until it's pretty much a single repeated drum beat, and then just that cymbal/tambourine noise repeated over and over, until it finishes.

That reminded me of the first time I heard Tetra-sync, though without the same "wow" effect.

8/10. In the end, surprisingly good, and recommended.

Would I listen to more of the same band? Based on that song, yes, but I think I've seen blue say that it's their only decent one.

Michael Bublé - Crazy little thing Called Love

It starts off with some great drumming, and piano playing. It al flows fabulously. The singers voice then comes in. He has a good voice, reminds me of Dean Martin or someone else from The Rat Pack.

The love the Swing feel, and the brass instruments that break into the mix. A great guitar solo is thrown out quite rapidly. Brian Setzer like. And following the solo, the bass lines start getting very noticable. And the drummer is given openings to do fills, which he exectues perfectly.

10/10 Great song. I love Swing. Fabulous rythm aswell as vocals.

Blues Traveler - Optimistic Thought - 3:30

Starts off mid-paced and happy, with quite a few instruments - definitely guitars, drums and bass, and what could be many things - a whistle, or a stringed instrument, or a flute, harmonica.

I really like the guitar in the verse, I love that adept, fairly fast-paced picking/strumming. The vocalist is really good as well. His accent is addictive, and he's got a good rhythm going in the verses.

Around 1:47, the harmonica/flute/whatever goes off on a solo, which is pretty cool, and is followed immediately by a solo on electric guitar, which I can relate to more easily.

2:20, the vocals come back in, and they're even better! Great voice, and he knows how to use it to stress different points of the line.

Most instruments (except drums) cut out for an awesome vocal part, singing about embracing life - definitely lives up to it's title. Then there's none-lyrical vocals to lead out on.

9/10 Another awesome song. I hope badmoon and joshmay keep recommending stuff like this, I've been missing out :(

Very cool, simple, Dead song. I've never really got into them, but I might check them out some more. I like that country rock vibe they have going. Sounds a lot like the Allman Bros.

Edit: Fine. It starts off kind of reminesent of Brewer & Shipley's "One toke over the Line." The chord changes are typical Dead/Southern Rock. It doesn't really change that much throughout the song, it has several solo sections in it, but they are kind of repetitive noodling stuff that jam bands are often plagued with. It kind of reminds me of the Freebird solo, because the solos in this song mainly consist of five or less notes. Just penatonic solos, nothing too inventive. Now that I realize it, this song is not a nine, it more like a seven. It gets boring, but it is good for what it is

Jedi Mind Tricks - I Against I

The song opend with some organ playing, and possibly some background bass playing. The rapping then comes in with the drumming. The beat is rather nice, with some good timing. The rapping is good, but I could really rate it becauseI can't rate rapping. The simple, and smooth background playing matches great with the rappers. I also believe there is some flute (Or something) playing in the background at certain times. The rappers switch over time, which gives the song some variety. I couldn't tell you how many different rappers there are exactly, but I think three.

The track is okay. 6.5/10

The Pogues - Rocky Road to Dublin

The track opens with some great viloin playing. The vocals soon come, they're obviously from Ireland. And their voices obviously have the accent, which occasionally gets annoying, but is nice. I like the drumming, rather simple though. And the wide varety of instruments keeps me interested. t's slightly surprising to hear an electric guitar in the mix. For obviously reason.

A little more than half way in, each musician changes the tempo up, and starts a...breakdown, I guess.

I liked the song. I never really listed to any other Folk than America. Good stuff. 7.5/10

I've heard this once or twice, about 4-5 months ago, then forgot about it. So I couldn't remember it at all really. So anyway. This is a great song. There's about a 2:30 actual 'song' as such, and the rest is basically a huge jam. The first bit is humerous, but really nothing to get excited about. It's pretty catchy, and has all these weird time signature changes, which makes it cool. The drums are good as well. I like the bass tone as well. And the descending bit at about 1:02 is splendid. Then, after a chorus, the jam begins. This is pretty awesome. Great background music, and it is engaging enough to sit and listen to all the way through. There are changing phrases throughout the entire song, but the guitar (I don;'t know his name) is basically soloing throughout. The drum solo (about 6:30) is awesome, though. It seems to be all premeditated, because the phrasing is far too good to be made on the spot (or perhaps, they were just superb musicians) it mellows out after the drum solo for a while, which is probably my favourite part of the jam. After it has all finished, there is this cool whistle bit, which is my favourite part of the song - the drums make it even better. And there is a cool little harmony. After that, there is a couple of choruses, and then the mammoth song ends. Excellent song, which I recommend to everyone.

Okay, sorry this took so long, but I was determined to get this one song rather than either of the others.

I absolutely loved the last Ben Harper song I heard, so I've got high hopes.
Ben Harper - Like a King (I'll Rise) - 10:03

Okay, for a ten minute song I'm not doing a play-by-play. His voice isn't as high (most of the time) as it is on When it's Good, but he's got a great voice, so I think it'll sound good no matter how he uses it.

The whole song seems to be Harper and an acoustic guitar. This is absolutely no bad thing, as his way of playing the guitar (really quick, adept picking/strumming - anyone tell me it's proper name?) is fast becoming a favourite of mine. It's totally excellent.

His playing basically follows the mood of the song - if he is singing, it is generally low-key and melancholy (the lyrics are fairly bitter and unhappy, but I like them); there is just the occasional quiet guitar to back it up.

This is punctuated by bursts of captivating, manic playing, such as there is for about 2 minutes towards the start of the song.

The last four minutes or so (from 4-8) have been focused on his singing - I'm really drawn in, captivated, it's amazing. I'm usually more susceptible to instruments than beautiful vocals..but this is, well, beautiful. No other description for it.

Oh wait, 8:35 or so and the song stops, and a crowd applauds. Guess that was a live version. The last minute and a half is applause, and thanks from Ben.

10/10, no question.

Frank Zappa - Catholic Girls

Man, Zappa is one goofy guy. The beginning riff is catchy as heck. The lyrics are funny. Something about catholic girls "learning to blow catholic boys," and doing "something behind the rectory." A cool guitar solo comes in and it kinda sounds like a banjo, but im not sure.

Hahaha, "with a tongue like a cow, she can make you go wow." Ahh, great stuff. A funny vocal solo comes in and the lyrics continue to be great. For some reason I love funny lyrics. The same thing continues for a minute or so as the singing and guitars fade out, then this weird voice starts saying something, i can';t make it out, but it's creepy and sounds like a child molester.

MY DIBS, BETTA RECOGNIZE

Ahem.

Wesley Willis - Casper the Homosexual Friendly Ghost

I've heard about Wesley but never got around to checking him out. Nice little introduction. I can barely understand what he's singing :p . Sounds like lots of swearing in there... maybe... Kinda got a generic-ish hard rock sound to the music. Ahaha, nice chorus, "Cassspperrr, Cassperrr, Cassppperrr." Awesome singing! The lyrics that I can understand aren't very funny, all the humor is in the voice. A little breakdown kind of thing where I can understand him even less... Annnddd, that's about it.

Overall, 3/10... But based on the humor, 6.5/10. Not bad, but I wasn't feeling it a whole lot.

My songs:

Beulah - Gene Autry - upbeat indie-pop
27 - The Cause - indie/adult-alternative, with nice female vocals
Isis - Swarm Reigns (Down) - sludgy/spacy metal
Pinback - Lyon - mellow, simplistic indie-pop

...and of course:

Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity - the 15 minute avant-garde/spacy-rock/classical/chaotic-metal challenge (c'mon man everybody's doing it)

Pinback - Lyon

The songs starts off with a simple drum beat, and soon the bass and the guitars break in. Technically it's not amazing, but that means nothing to me. The vocals slowly move in, and sound nice. Following that, some good organ work makes itself in. The overall sound with the vocals reminds me off a cross between The Beatles and Modest Mouse :p . The lead vocals are very soothing, aswell are the backing vocals. Add a couple more guitar and organ solos, and that's it.

Blues Traveler - Run Around
"MR JONES AND ME.."
That's just the first thing I though on the first listen to the intro. It's not that much like it though, just similar chords. A harmonica beebs around quickly and the singing starts pretty soon into it, the guy has a good voice on record (I've heard a live song too). Theres some good lyrics when my ears can catch them, I'm missing lots of them though. Hammond organ gives some reinforcement every now and then.

The guitar is playing the same chords throughout. The only difference between the verses and chorus is the intensity of the instruments, the choruses are generally harder.

A harmonica solo in the middle there, and the vocals and all come back more powerful for a bit, then drop off to the quietest sounding bit so far (maybe?). After a bit it ends with another harmonica solo and fade out.

It's not as energetic as But Anyway, which I reviewed a while ago, but that was a live version. I can still imagine Run Around going well live, just not as fun. The ever repeating chord sequence didn't bother me, so what they did to vary the song in other ways worked well. Overall, a decent blues-rock piece, but it didn't move me that much. 7.5/10

John Butler Trio - Three Live Songs - (all together about 25 minutes)

This begins with the song intro and I assume it's john butler explaining the meaning of the two songs he is about to play. They are a story about a time when he and his wife got together in a dream and the fact that the dream didn't come true

Spring

This song starts with quite a complexed acoustic guitar part I think two guitars are playing. Its a beautiful section I can hear blues ,bluegrass and classical influences in there. The vocals start at 2:20 in this song. The vocals are very soft and complement the music perfectly. While he is singing the complexity of the acoustic guitar slows down. I'm really enjoying the vocals on this, this is my sort of song. I can't really think of a huge amount more to write about this song.

Ocean

This song starts of in a simlar vein again purely acoustic guitars and it is again quite complexed not your usual strumming. Again all beautifully played. At about 3 minutes into this song the song picks up place into an almost irish folk part :amaze: Again it's hard to write much else for a purely acoustic piece.

Peaches And Cream

This is the final part of the song and is about him and his partner making the dream. This starts with some simple arppegiated chords, and then goes to some simple strumming patterns. The vocals begin relatively early in this song. This song shows of his vocal talent much more than the first song and is very impressive although it is hard in some places to pick out what he's singing. At about 4:50 into this song the drums join in. At about 5:50 it seems like he's singing in another language and the song starts to seem very reggea influenced.

I'm sorry the song isn't very detailed but it's quite hard to write an in depth review for 3 songs lasting 25 minutes :p

Anyways very very good i'm surprised I haven't heard of the john butler trio from my dad as this is his sort of thing! I will definately be checking out some more of this stuff it's excellent

9.5 / 10

Damien Rice- Cannonball

the song starts off with some nice acoustic guitar work from what sounds like 2 guitars and they blend together rather nicely.

then some singing comes in i like the singing alot and the lyrics are really nice as well. sounds like the kind of voice that you would want from some acoustic stuff it goes with the music and is soft enough.

althought there is a little variation every know and then basically the same acoustic playing continuues for basically throughout the song it is nice although could a slight repitive. but these guys definitely have great songwriting skills.

about 4 minutes into the song a really nice solo comes in and is probaly the highlight of the song.

after that it changes the pace up a little bit. gets a little slower and slowly starts to fade away and thats the end

i really liked this song alot. ive heard of damien rice but never actually checked anything out by them and after this i will be checking more stuff out by them.

Phish - "Stash"

This song has a jazzy tone but utilizes a lot of harmonic minor concepts, which gives it a slightly evil, arabian tone, which is cool. Then the song picks up into a happier part after the more awkward intro that flows like like fun jazz. Then the song takes a turn for the worse. Vocals. Oh well, Trey sucks nards. Let's face the facts kids. I like his guitar noodling in the next part. To be honest though it's just noodling. There's nothing truly memorable except for maybe the accenting of the background piano. The guitar lead gets more compelling when it rises up into the higher reaches of the guitar. It sounds much prettier and tonally works better into the song. It has flares of reallly true awesomeness but then it'll go chromatic again. That's one thing I can't stand about Phish; they'll trash cool great melodies for a little more tweaked out noodling. I wish they'd focus a little more and savor the good things they have. The end solo is pretty cool. I'm enjoying the tone. It reminds me of something Maudlin of the Well would do. Good times. I guess the songs holds itself together in the end.

Draculacore-Apollo Creed aux Champs Elysees

Songs starts off with an interesting sort of techno beat with some chords over it, which isn't bad. Then they go right into the opening riff from 'Eye of the Tiger'

The song then goes into an ambient state for a while until it breaks this sort of silence with a solo, which sounds like the guitarist is just messing around. The song ends after a moment of silence, a single note from the guitarist.

This is one of the most boring songs i've ever heard. Nothing really interesting happens, the only good thing about the song was it was incredibly short so i didn't have to listen to it for more than 2 minutes.

Arcturus - Ad Astra

Tick tick (bass drum?) and synth strings intro, flute for a bit, quiet vocal sample mixed with pickscrapes and some other quiet chimes. Although theres no solid proof of it yet, this sounds like it'll be in 6/8.

Oh, not quite, it goes a bit trip-hoppy, a bit like Portishead - Glory Box in the beat.

Trumpet! With distorted guitar rumblings in there, but quietly for good measure, and strings for that.. something feeling. It's just slow 4/4 now.. ****, sounded like a good 6/8er to me. There is a dark feeling, a dark majestic feeling, the synth string bursts did it.

Then some lead guitar, fast double bass work on a slow beat, strange.

Slow and dark again, like the castle level in Super Mario Brothers... with low synth strings. Then it's back to that trip hop beat. The strings carry on with a few higher bits too. Majesty burst!! Guitar comes back and the double-bass doesnt sound right here.

It's gone into 6/8 :D I just knew it would, I just knew it Toto. It's like a whole new song here now. Electric Piano takes the lead and there are some more real sounding strings than before. Just these 2 elements carry on for a bit, sounds nice.

Well I wasn't expecting vocals after 5 minutes of not having, but here they are. They sound strange, like a drunk russian... and kind of in the background.
Then BAM Bllelblleblelebebleboebelbeobelbeobeeee (fast guitar run). Then a bit of guitar solo, now a keyboard solo and everything is heavy and much faster now. It's like a 3rd piece of music in this track. There's so much more energy here than ever before. The keyboard solo carries on, it slows and fades on a final chord.

Very interesting. And again, very interesting. I liked it for the most part, just a few bits sounded strange or out of place. I'll be keeping this one surely. I said it all up there^ this is a non-summary. I went a bit crazy too.

Cog - The Truth

I was really looking forward to the aboriginal sounds, but oh well. Instead a got a fairly decent hard rock/metal song. It starts with a heavy riff, in a weird time signature. The drums compliment it well. When the verse starts, it goes back to an odd time signature, which sounds pretty cool. The drums kind of wreck it I think, they are far too loud in the mix. And he hits the snare right when there's a silent bit, which makes it lose its importance. The guys voice is really a lot like Maynard's, and in the bridge bit, the band sound a lot like Tool as well. I like the quiet bit. then it is just the chorus out. Pretty bland, but pretty cool.

Diablo II - Ancients

Song starts off somewhat ambient but with a sort of frightening twist to it.
At about 00:38 a few instruments come in for a short period of time, it's almost as if your being chased.

As the song moves forward, signs of happiness in the song are often offset by the sadness portrayed with violins/cellos (i'm not sure if it's a synth or not) that followed.

At about 2:23 the mood of the song changes towards a more eerie feeling, the music seems to be leading up to something and then abruptly stops before the climax.

At about 3:08, the music becomes a bit more epic, in the sense of it's sound, not it's speed (because it's not fast.)

At about 3:50 there is a violin solo with nothing in the background, this solo is slow and eerie and finishes out the song.

I give this song a 7/10. It was pretty good, but i kept expecting the music to lead up to a climax and this climax never came. The music was very well arranged though. I would look into more music by this artist.

The song begins with some mid paced strings and guitar. At 0:31 the vocals enter, his vibrato in his voice is excellent a brilliant singer. At 1:15 the guitar solo starts sounding almost out of tune, a very nice peice of shredding guitar harmonies towards the end of the solo. At 2:29 a piano joins in playing underneath the guitar riff this helps to add a new dimension to this part of the song, the guitar and vocals then drop off and its just the piano for about 15 seconds. The song then picks up pace as the guitar, drums and vocals re join. And the second guitar solo begins although this is more repeating the same lick over and over again.

I'm really likeing this song.

Katatonia - Omerta

Starts with a nice 6/8 feel on the guitar with vocals, that really fit the music well. Drums come in with a snare roll that gets gradually louder. The chorus, perhaps, is the singer doing do do's, it's quite good. Simple drums over the guitar riff, and bass root notes, and the occasional mess around. It's kind of samey by the chorus, and if I know my song form, a bridge will be next. Wrong I was, more verse, then an interesting solo, with hardly any notes at all. I like the guitar tone of the solo, it's got a nice kind of tinny sound to it. After the solo, it's that elusive bridge, then the ending, which isn't really an ending at all, it just stops, rather suddenly. I probably got a dodgy version, but oh well. It was good, but a bit too repetitive for my liking.

Roundabout
The intro to this song is played bny an accoustic and sounds very smoothe and slow. Then 44 seconds later the whole band comes in and the bass plays this very funky riff and I love the fills by the keyboard. I have never herd of this band or the song but it sounds 70's - 80's style and I think it is heaps fuken groovy. around three minutes into this song the keyboard and drums kick in with this mad bridge. I think what makes this song so sweet is the keyboard I just love it. The vocals in this song are very good and work well with the song. 5 minutes into the song the accoustic comes back in with this awsome electrosound. The electric quitar has this mad us solo anbout 6 mins into this song which sounds sweet. I also love the chorus to this song aswell. The accoustic comes in again right at the end to finish it of. This song is very long as nyou can see but what I love most about this song is the funky bass line and the keyboard. I rate this song 9/10 the only reason why I did not given it full marks is the length of the song, a bit to long for me.

Radiohead - Pyramid Song - 4:51

I have two radiohead albums, ok computer and the bends. But I have not heard this one before.

The song begins with a plodding piano piece, Thom Yorke's instantly recognisable vocals enter at about 0:37. At about the 2 minute mark the drums enter in playing some weird off beat almost jazzy in some parts. Some synth and strings join in this helps to give the song a very eerie spacy vibe. At 3:28 all the synths and strings drop away just leaving vocals, piano and drums. The strings then rejoin at the four minute mark this time louder and making much more of a mark on the song. There is then some sort of synth in the back ground that again adds to the spacy vibe of the song. The song ends with various synth noises.

I really enjoyed this song, i've not really explored radiohead outside the two albums I own, so i will definately check out some of the later stuff.

Robert Cray - Up In The Sky

Now that's a strange intro... sitar (or guitar with a sitar sound) and piano with some drums in free time. Turns into a simple drum beat, guitar and bass accompany the now singing singer, he has a good, clean, clear voice. A bit of stringage at the end of each line to soften it up a bit. There is some blues feeling in there, a bit of jazz too. Ahhh.. soul is the name for that, I realize I haven't heard very much soul music at all.

What's he singing about? A guy wanting to be in the sky, his girl wants to be with him...
"Life's too short for the living, life's too long for the dying" I think it's about death and being in heaven (or afterlife of your choice) and "not being a burden to anyone, anymore ever again" in the chorus.
:/ mustn't have had much confidence... or they just wanted to be alone together.

The 2nd verse has some piano stepping through it and the sitar plays a bit when the strings do. The next line of it has some string bursts. Musically, it's fairly simple sounding.. except the sitar which bwibs out some slight lead, and the piano might be a bit tricky.
Sitar and piano continue for the chorus... interesting contrast.

Sitar solo, bwi bwii bwii.

Chorus again. Then the piano and bass play the verses vocal line and the singer sings the 2nd half of the chorus. Then ends on free time jingly's with sitar and piano...

The music doesn't like all that much, the lyrics are alright though, some cool one liners in there. The sitar and piano combo was interesting, but then it made me think it would be the food equivalent of adding lemon juice to milk... but this isn't forced drinking/eating.. it's Forced "listning", which I guess is meant to be listening. The guy's voice was pretty clear.. so easy to hear.

The Bird - Lei Kung

It starts with an almost hypotising synth riff, with various voice samples. The drums comes in, with open and closed hi hat. The woman's moan sounds pretty good. When the drummer switches to the ride cymbal, that part is great. Random snare fills by the drummer are cool. Then the drummer starts going into his 'madcore' session - open closed hi hats, and basically hitting anything as fast as he possibly can. About 1:50 the riff changes into a slower, less droning riff, and the drums go back to the hi hat. There are some tribal sounding bongos played breifly, which i like. More madcore drumming now, over the bongos. The mix of them both is great. This goes on for a while, until the synth stops, and there is a sort of ambient bit. THe drums slow down a bit, and then the original sythm riff comes back, and more madcore drumming to finish the song. Pretty good, but not my cup of tea.

Joe Satriani - The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing

Okay, I just noticed that I had this download from when I attempted to download it before, but it wasn't even close to being finished. I have also never really heard anything from Joe.

The track opens with a great Rock like riff. Inbetween each repeat to the riff, the drummer throws some nice little fills. The sound Joe gives off is great sounding, as are the drums.

Soon, a solo is added while someone plays rythm guitar. The solo sounds good, but isn't that appealing. Within time, Joe does some rapid playing, possibly shreding and some great tapping. I particularly like his tapping compared to the shreding though. Keep in mind I don't listen to music that includes tapping or shreding. So, if I'm calling something shreding that isn't, correct me if you must.

Overall, the song is pretty much a big solo. I really like how it's put together.

7/10 I really liked it. :)

And I can kind of see myself listening to small doses of guitar virtuosity in the future.

The Allman Brothers - Ramblin' Man

Prior to listening to this, I was listening to death metal, so this song was almost humerous to listen to after all that hate. Anyway. This is unlike most Allman Brothers I've heard (I'm used to their long, drawn out jam sessions) so yeah. It starts off with a cool, typically country, blues run on the guitar, joined in by the piano. A simple bassline, over drums, and clear, easy to understand vocals. It's cheesy, but cool so far. It's got the typical 2-feel of a country song. Now a chorus, not much different from the verse. After the chorus, some cool phrasing, then a guitar solo, which is quite good. More verse now, then a chorus. Not much variation here. Hopefully there's another solo. No, another chorus now, with some nice harmonies on the vocals. After some phrasing by the guitars, there's another solo, probably the most enjoyable part of the song for me. This song is cool, but it's completely not my style, I'm afraid.

Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive

Sounds like general old stlye rock at the start, but it soon mutates, sounds like lots of improvisation. The drums stay constant for about 2:20 with the rest of the instrements going weird. I can hear a guitar or 2, bass, organ

A beeping guitar comes in... but things go borky. it sounds like old video game music at times with swells and beeps and all this other random. Again, the drums are constant, but playing a different thing now.

5:30 some slide guitar with delay comes in. A quick trippy section, over quiclky.. going into an ambient bit, mostly just organ and cymbal swishes...

I'm not liking this much, its mostly random notes... nothing much I can say to describe it

ooh some major panning action from about 8:40, I'm going to listen to that bit again in headphones, but its nearly over now, theres not much left that can be done.. not much they would probably do anyway. Yeah.. it finishes in the middle of some drumming.

ok the panning bit through headphones... strange, it feels like someone is touching my ears.. but its over quickly.. nothing to get too worked up about

****... what can I say? That was pretty poor.. If you like randomness and take hallucinogenic drugs, this stuff might do something for you. Otherwise, I wouldnt bother.

George - Breathe In Now

Saw these guys live earlier in the year, along with the Whitlams and Mark Seymour (frontman for Hunters and Collectors) and was blown away with the quality of her voice. I forget her name, but she, along with her brother, have the most amazing voices ever. EVER. Then, about a month ago, I saw her with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (I think) doing all these jazz standards with her mother, an opera singer. Again, I was literally blown away by the quality of her voice. It proves that females can be successful without posing half naked in every magazine possible. Anyway, on with the song.
This is off the new album, Unity, correct? I can't remember hearing it at the concert, but I wasn't really a George fan back then. It starts with some acoustic guitar, and some keyboards, and her voice. I downloaded a pretty crappy mp3, unfortunately, so the quality is bad, and there's crackles everywhere. An organ sounds when she sings the next bit, which I assume is the chorus. I hear some simple bass as well, just playing the root notes. Drums come in after the chorus, and it starts building up, and the bass gets more busy. Another chorus now, same as the first one. After this, the drums get a bit technical, and the bass goes to straight 8ths, and the singer starts crooning at about half the peak of her top note, which is still very high. Another chorus, and then the song ends. I really liked this, and it was a great job by the singer (It was very much a ballad - focused on the lyrics) but even with the great performance, she can do twice as good as that. She is amazing.

Haven't done an Other one of these in a while :(

I've heard some of the rest of this album, but not this song. I like what I've heard so far.
Ephel Duath - Praha (Ancient Gold) - 5:17

Starts off bass, soon joined by some light drumming (cymbal tapping, I think), and then a trumpet. The trumpet seems to be the main instrument, but there's a whole collage of sounds going on here - cymbals (sometimes tapping, sometimes rolling), light guitar, bass, other things I can't identify. Loving it so far, though there isn't so much a melody or unifying tune as a mass of sounds.

0:42 - what I think is an electric guitar solo starts up - it's fairly quiet in the mix, but noticeable, and pretty cool. It's not fast, just slow and meandering. The song carries on like this, pretty good but without any real direction, until 1:44 or so, when suddenly most of the instruments cut out, and only guitar is left - it ups the tempo and is soon joined by the drums and bass (the drums coming in on a roll).

The guitar is soloing again, faster than before, but not high pitched or otherwise traditionally metal. I think I can hear some piano around 2:10.The trumpet comes back in around 2:40, and becomes the main instrument.

Around 3:10 there's a flash of a solid riff, before a return to drum and bass, and then back again to the quiet (ish) riffing.

The drums start to get quite dramatic around 4:20, and pretty soon almost everything cuts out and draws to a close, leaving the guitar again, playing on it's own until around 5:05, when the song fades out with radio chatter (I think).

8.5/10 Very good, although I was expecting vocals. A little directionless at times, but good.

Would I listen to more of the same band? Yup.

Apocalyptica - Nothing Else Matters

By 'unorthodox' i thought you meant ultra-black-death metal or something. but nope, i was wrong. i guess their actually a classical (quartet?) group. This version of the original song is very well-done when i compare it to other attempts of this nature. Unlike the string tributes to tool, this attempt at 'nothing else matters' is pretty much right on. i would compare moments in this song to moments in 'all strung out on ok computer' (the string tribute to radiohead's 'ok computer').

Would i listen to more yeah, probably. i'd actually like to check out some of their own stuff.

Porupine Tree- Lightbulb Sun

alright ive heard alot about porcupine tree from this website and various other places but never really checked them out. the song starts out with some nice acoustic guitar work for the intro and continues into the verse. this guy has a nice voice that fits with the guitar nicely and some darn good lyrics. then an electric guitar comes in and has an interesting riff i guess this is the chorus. then the acoustic guitar comes back. there are certainly alot of switchups like that in this song. then about three minutes into the song some really fantastic drumming comes almost out of nowhere. i can see that the drummer has potential you just couldnt tell for most of the song. after that the song is over and all you hear is what sounds like children playing.

i really liked this song.its not what i suspected cuz ive heard people say they were prog but this song sounds nothing like any of the prog ive heard. nevertheless still a great song. 8/10

Ben Harper - Burn One Down - 3.31

Sorry I took so long to write the review of this song, I downloaded the track but I completely forgot about writing the review for it.

The song begins with some sort of tribal drum beat. The guitar riff joins in about 0:14, and the vocals follow at 0:37. I must be honest that i'm not a huge fan of his vocals, they are fairly high pitched and I don't feel like they complement the song well. The bass joins in at about 1:08, i quite enjoy the bass parts in this songs especially as he sings "i'm going to burn one down" and the bass part follows his voice down. Lyrically i'm not quite sure what he means when he sings i'm going to burn one down. If anyone could tell me i'd be grateful.

Overall I enjoyed the song but i'm afriad there isn't anything special in there to make it stand out to me.

I've never heard this guy. I'm not a real big virtuoso fan, I mean, Satriani and Vai I'll pull out for the occasional listen, but it's not my favourite type of music. Anyway. It starts with a cool, blues sounding run. The intro is just the guitar, soloing. After a while, some instruments come in, and I suppose what is the main riff starts. The riff is ok, but nothing to get excited about. It sounds like a song in a game when you've just finished it, celebration music. He then does a little bit of soloing, then plays the riff, and kind of adds random fills onto that, which sound ok. Then to the 'chorus' where he again does the random additions. At about 2:10, it changes, and he starts going nuts. Briefly, for about 1 second, then plays some very dissonant sounding phrase. At about 2:45 he starts soloing, for good. The solo is pretty good, but nothing I'd call virtuoso. There's some awesome bits, but he lacks the Satriani greatness about him. The main riff AGAIN (It's getting annoying now) and it fades out with a new riff, and some awesome run.

4/10. Bored the hell of me. Some good bits, though.

A robotic voice announces the song by chanting the song title. This sounds pretty cool. It sounds like hyper futuristic disco music. The female vocals are okay...it's got some strange 'cut up' backing vocals. I like the chorus...very arranged, ethereal music. This is good music to party along to. Around 1:20 into the song the robotic voice returns saying random stuff, while the female vocalists shows off her voice a bit. This is the kind of music you really shouldn't analyze...it's music you have to absorb. It's a fun song that is easy to dance to. The weakness of this track IMO is that it gets a bit repetitive in the chorus parts. For dance music, it's pretty good. 6.5/10

Ok here we go:

Isis - False Light

Starts with some chords over a hi hat, then a melody comes over softly. Then it gets really slow and heavy (well, not that heavy) and some screamo/hardcore kind of vocals, which I don't like much. Then there's a 9/4 bit, and the guitar gets pretty busy. It's pretty good. It's really groovy as well, it doesn't really need the 9/4, but it's cool none the less. Then it goes quiet for a bit, then back to being heavy, but this time, the drummer does kind of a solo, all these fills. After another chorus, it goes to back to 4/4 (I think) but has this really technical riff. Then it goes all ambienty. I like the bass in this bit. There's a guitar solo, or something like it, vvery Omar Rodriguez style, ambient solos. It goes to another slow bit now, with just chords on every bar. it remains like this for a fair bit, there's kind of a synth thing going on somewhere, which I like. At about the 6:00 minute mark, it gets heavy again, still remains slow, sounds very sludgy, Melvins style almost. It does this for a while, then vocals come in, and the song finishes.

7/10 A bit directionless at times, but cool. I liked the quiet bits especially.

Blackalicious - Chemical Calisthenics

Funky start, drums and a piano note on the 1 beat. a bit of laugh, "good, can you say it faster" and some scratch.
goes slow for a second.
Then it goes back to the funky beat with a bass line now. Gab (the rapper) is on about.. physics more than chemicals to start with. Then it all stops...

Doubling this seemingly random tom drum thing, Gab says some stuff, then names a bunch of elements..
Back to the normal beat. Fast beat with fast vocals too.
Then this is mad.. this is quite proggy, the beat stop/starts all the time. Unstable "careful" bit is cool, it sounds unstable. I can't explain what it is, it just needs a listen. This is like the Spastic Ink of Rap...

It's usually the funky beat/piano. More rapping about chemicals. I cant really hear what he's saying. But I hear some chemical formulas and names.. and talk of hip hop

Now some horn samples join, more chemical theory, sounds like another guy here.., funky beat for some more, then whoever is rapping now changes the beat then the drums follow him.. now in 6/8, for a bit at least, some strange horns here.

A slow beat again, with some more rapping.

Sample: "All aboard for the night train"

At the end theres a lone snare, it speeds up like a train gathering speed.. Gab says something on each hit... it speeds up some more... a train whistle... even faster, and Gab still keeps up. By the very end it's so fast that its hard to believe he is STILL keeping with the snare, well not at the very end, the drums are way to fast to double with a syllable, but it was still very fast.

well.. I never knew which one Gab was anyway, but it was so madcore.
A very interesting listen, a bit spazzy, but I'm used to Spiral Architect so this is certainly learnable in time.
Not much in the melodics department though, which does help me a bit, but its no biggie.
This is some great work on diversifying and experimenting (no pun intended) in rap music. I hope lots of groups can be inspired from this and build their own great ideas.
8.5/10

Cog - Moshiach

It starts off very ambienty, reminds me of water. A voice says something in a megaphone, and a distorted riff on the guitar starts plugging away. You are right about the aboriginal-tinged bit, the chanting sounds very much like aboriginal chanting, sort of. Now the chanting has stopped, and a distorted bass comes in (yeah!!!) and the drums start playing on the tom, wiht the occasional cymbal hit. The vocals come in, he sounds remarkably like the guy from Incubus. There is another little jam passage, which is in some weird time, now I suppose the chorus is on, which sounds a lot like the verse. Now there's another little breakdown, into an ambient bit, which I'm told is in 9/4. This bit's so cool, there is a guitar filler thing, which is like a solo, but isn't. I like the bass and drums here, they compliment the music very well. There is female backing vocals, just singing along some chords. After the ambience bit, it gets quite heavy, and the drummer hits a lot of cymbals. Very cool. Back to the chorus now, sounds pretty bland after the cool heavy bit. Now some police talk or something, which is so Australian it's not funny (the accent is there, yes) the drummer gets all fidley with his toms again, and the guitars and bass just play straight 8th chords. There is a bit of a riff happening now. Now some cool phrasing, then a bridge sort of thing, which isn't as heavy as the rest of the song with vocals in it. For the outro, the drummer fiddles around on his toms again, giving it a real floating sound, then it slowly comes to an end.

8/10.... I really liked it. I didn't like the chorus/verse, but their instrumental passages are something to behold. Awesome, awesome stuff.

I've heard 4 of the five songs you listed...the Pink Floyd and Mars Volta songs are great (provocateur is better than any de-loused track, cicatriz excluded)...but the Cynic ones are pretty rubbish in my opinion. I'm not a fan of technical metal, so perhaps that's the reason. Let alone would I download a 'grindcore' track. The most technical band that I like is Dillinger Escape Plan...but I find them impossible to place in one of them goofy subgenres.

Anyway, the Jaco Pastorius song was of interest to me...I think he was a great bass player. The first song I heard his bass playing on was Joni Mitchells Black Crow...which I prefer to a song with an identical riff, Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. Anyway I digress...I think Jaco carries that song (Black Crow)...his playing is so dynamic, that the song doesn't need rhythm to establish a good beat. Very impressive indeed.

Here I go:

Jaco Pastorius - Used To Be A Cha-Cha
This is really great chill-out stuff...Jaco's bass playing is the driving force, but I don't analyze it as much. I'm more impressed with the cool piano and flute playing syncronized. It's a really technical track overall. The drummer is playing a mixture of jazz, salsa and Cuban latin music...with frequent use of the toms.Around one and a half minute into the song, the first Jaco solo comes. I love the part around 2:45...with the cool piano and flute melodies...very relaxing. I like the use of ethnic percussion too. A bit before 4 minutes, the flute and piano exchange little solo's. The song seems to intensify from here. The piano players time to show off with a pretty long solo. Jaco's bassline remains steady. Around 7 and a half minutes, the flute comes back for a bit, and the complementary melodies become more focused and well-rounded. It's a very difficult freeflowing jammish track. It's great stuff to listen to once every so much time...but I couldn't digest watching an entire concert listening to this kind of music... eventually the music becomes so technical that it's hard to have a distinct memory of the music that is played in my opinion. I prefer a guy like Charles Mingus, who also writes difficult stuff...but his music usually has a distinct melody that sticks with you. That's what lacks in this track. But on the other hand, these are really talented musicians (not just Jaco), and that deserves some respect. 6.7/10

EDIT: My version is 8:55...but the end chord ends abruptly...I hope I got the right version.

My picks:

Beck - Diamond Bollocks (alternative/prog rock...very recommended)
Tomahawk - Birdsong (hard rock/alternative)
Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather For Ducks (alternative dance...similiar to The Avalanches)
Ani DiFranco - Hell Yeah (acoustic/urban folk)
Porno For Pyros - Tahitian Moon (alt. rock)

If it had a bass solo for about 1:30, then you have the right track.

Beck - Diamond Bollocks

Loser is the only song I know by Beck, so I cant say I know what to expect.

It sounds like elevator music at the start.. harpsichord and "ooh, ahh" stuff.
30 seconds in, it busts into some muse-like distorted bass and drum pattern with the singing, sounds a bit old school rock. "Looking back on some dead world that looks so new"
theres some slightly trippy effects added in.

This may be the chorus, no singing, but drums are going a bit wild, guitar appears, cutting in and out quickly. Then some harder guitar chords
PAUSE for the birds
Harder for a bit.. now it reminds me of the doors... before the sci-fi electronic bit comes in. Very strange compared to the last bit, it sounds good though. It sounds creepy. The vocals fit well.

Some NOISE

Then it returns to the first distorted bass and drums, and now some space invader solo, which keeps on going along with the singing when it returns.
A random guitar bends burst leads into a slow Beatles sounding bit now with lots of flanger effect. He repeats "Looking back on some dead world that looks so new"

Then it busts back to the fast hard bit again, with a guitar semi-solo this time. fading out

Synth strings outro playing the same type of chords, sounds kind of old school again.

For 6 minutes, it seemed to go quickly. There are some really strange music combinations here, very interesting. I thought it would have been the elevator music right through.. but I'm glad it wasn't. I'm not into that older sounding stuff too much, but this was such an offshoot that it didn't really make a difference, it was like hearing a new style of music. I'll surely keep this and get more used to it.
9/10

Substitute Inc. - The Chase - Scene 3 and 4 (one song spread over two tracks) - underwater progressive trippy-disco sci-fi rock

Ochre - Horizon - progish rock, my favourite local band before they broke up, and this is my favourite (recorded) song by them. 7 minutes. Possibly my favourite song at the moment

Aghora - Mind's Reality - melodic technical metal with a great female singer and everyones favourite tech metal bassist, Sean Malone.

Blueser57 on Soulseek, you all know it now. If I'm not on, chillerspoon has the Ochre one whenever he is on.

Aghora - Mind's Reality - 4:22

I had written another review but being the numbnuts that I am I accidently deleted it
:(

I've never heard aghora before and I don't know anything about the band members but i've heard alot about them before so I'm looking forward to this.

The song begins with just bass and drums, the bass is quite high in the mix but this isn't really a bad thing considering the complexity of some of it.

The vocals soon enter I wasn't aware that Aghora had a female vocalist, to be honest i'm not a huge fan of her vocals they remind me of a band called madder mortem I saw live once (who were awful :) )
The guitar joins in for the chorus which with bass creates quite a crushing accompaniment (sp?) to the vocals.
The first solo begins at 1:45 the solo isn't especially techinical until the end of it where there is quite a quick well picked run up the neck.
The vocals then rejoin and the song takes on an middle eastern theme.
The second solo begins at about 2:45 this one is alot more technical than the first and has alot of very nice licks in there.

Overall I enjoyed the song the only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the vocals, although they were technically impressive I just didn't enjoy them with this particular song.

6.5/10

My Recommendations

Mike Oldfield - Altered State ( **** knows what this genre is )
David Saw - Big Deal (Acoustic)

Ok here it is:

Keane - Bedshaped

It starts with some weird chimey sort of sounds, probably achieved through a synthesizer. They go on for a solid 30 seconds, then some piano comes in, with a nice opening chord, and a simple rock beat on the drums, with rim shots instead of snare. I don't think there's a bass, just piano and drums. Then nice vocals come in, he's got an excellent voice. He sings about something or another (I never was a big fan of lyrics) over simple chords on the piano, and the occasional run. The chorus is a bit more busy, a lot more chords, and the drummer moves to the ride cymbal, and hits the snare instead. It sounds pretty good. Now more verse. There's a nice buildup, which happened in the first verse too, but I didn't notice it until now. Another chorus, similar to the first, but with different words, I think. Now there's a quiet bit without drums, then to some weird voice effect, with nice harmonies. Then to a synth solo, simple, yet good. Now another chorus, then another quiet bit, and some nice descending chords to finish the song.

5.5/10, good, relaxing song, but not really my style. Cheers, anyway :thumb:

Cynic - Veil of Maya (Jazz/Metal)
