View Full Version : (Grunge/Alt. Rock) Nirvana - Nevermind

Nirvana's second album. Released in 1991, this is the CD that brought Nirvana to the mainstream. The song "Smells like Teen Spirit" was the "anthem of the 90's". Probably my favorite non-metal CD this CD has quite a good variety. but first off...
for those who don't already know Nirvana consists of
Kurt Cobain - Guitar, Vocals
Krist Novoselic - bass
Dave Grohl - Drums, backing vocals
Nirvan's Nevermind has been well praised as one of the Albums that change music. While Nirvana truly brought rock back to the people, it was simply their style of an older genre.
Nevermind consisted of
1. Smells like Teen Spirit.
The proclaimed "anthem of the 90's" is really a great song. Although simple, it has quite a catch to it. This song tops the list of the 100 best songs of the past 20 years 1984 - 2004). A great song overall
2. In Bloom
Another very good song. Although not quite as good as Smells Like Teen Spirit it still has its own individual sound.
3. Come as You Are
The first softer song on the CD and it has a heart to it that few other songs have. The song in total is sttill one of my favorites.
4. Breed
A real crowd pleaser here. Lyrics make absolutely no sense but I think everyone jumps around to the catchy line. Its a truly nuts song with Grohl's long drumroll at the intro getting straight to the crowd.
5. Lithium
One of Nirvana's best songs. The song penetrates feelings... even if you dont know what he's talking about. The chorus is very catchy, and more upbeat than the rest of the song. A good song all around again.
6. Polly
This is the only song on the entire CD that I don't think is amazing. It's to repetitive. Although I rarely skip a song, it does not stand up to the rest of the songs on the album. Also this is the first acoustic song on the album.
7. Territorial Pissings
The very bizarre intro to the song originally turned me off to it, but it has a lot in common with Breed, a crazy song, good for party type atmospheres. Kurt really goes nuts during this song. It is not the best on the CD but it is a very addictive song.
8. Drain you
This song about relationships is probably the most bizarre song on the album. Lyrically it is a crazy song. It is about pain in Kurt's life like everything else.
9. Lounge Act
This song shows a bit of Krist's bass talent. This is another crazy song. Nowhere near best on the album it has a very catchy chorus that leaves you singing it over and over in your head... with the lyrics completely wrong.
10. Stay Away
This song is Dave's first true vocal lead. Probably the worst song on the album sadly, it is still not as bad as some of the other stuff I have heard.
11. On a Plain
I like this song alot. But I really don't know what to say about it. It is another one of Nirvana's better songs. I still listen to this song often. It is good musically and Kurt again shows that he can song pretty well for the music.
12. Something in The Way
Most definately the most underrated song Nirvana ever did. The sad ballad style song is one of my favorites. It truly catches the listeners attention with Kurt's heartfelt singing. This song is a typical slow song with violins in the background. This song I can truly relate to and it makes me want to cry sometimes.
Nevermind is the best Nirvana CD ever in my opinion. For a final ranking of the CD I give Nevermind a 4 and 1/2 out of 5. It is outstanding in its genre and has a lot of variety. A true masterpiece of Alternative rock. If you don't own this CD you should.

Good review. My favorite Nirvana album. I am not a huge Nirvana fan, probably because they are highly overrated, but I enjoy quite a few songs from this album.

This song is a typical slow song with violins in the background. This song I can truly relate to and it makes me want to cry sometimes.
So now emotionless monotone is heartfelt and emotional? (I'm not criticizing the song; I kind of like it, but to me, it seems more like the dying words of a man who is emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually drained. That's probably a little melodramatic, though.)
My rating for the album (and the band for that matter, since this album fits them pretty well.) 2/5 I'd explain my reasons, but last time I tried that, my cpu crashed, and I'm not re-investing 20 minutes on this.

Polly is a great song, if theres a repetetive song on the album its something in the way, even though theres no duff track on the album really. Id give it a 4/5 simply because its influenced me so much.

You're a very interesting woman me thinks. Anyway, Nevermind has it's influence and it's a 'hard-pop' gem, but I still think it lags behind In Utero in terms of being a 'great' album.

first of its kind? there were plenty of alternative and grunge bands long before nirvana ever banded together, and they were all twice as good.

Someone said good review? I cant agree with you on that one. Many of the reviews on here have a good paragraph on each song and a song rating. This one was very incomplete I felt.
But who am I to complain? I couldnt be bothered to write another one myself.

my favorites on this cd are breed cuz i love the distorted bass, and territorial pissings cuz it has that psychotic feel to it especially at the end that drew me in to nirvana. though not as good as in utero, this is one of my fav albums. 3.5/5

Pretty good review, but in my opinion this is the worst Nirvana album. I personally like Incesticide and it is my favorite Nirvana album. I think Nevermind was overly produced and dubed to much. Smells Like Teen Spirt, got all the attention when many other songs on that album were way better (i.e. Drain You, Polly, Lounge Act)

i really dont know how to find fualts in this album, kurts incredible (better than decent) song writing was transmitted in an amazing way in every song here. never under estimate the power of simplicity.
oh and whats with the word 'overrated', what happend to accepting the music for what it is.
one thing i cant understand is people who say "oh thats popular... its crap"

Wow Nevermind is a great album all-around. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the hands down teen anthem of the 90's, and is still widely popular today. The distortion...the feeling it's just a powerful song. There is not one song on that album that i dont like. I love it. I'll divulge into this album more in depth at a later date. But dude, this is definately one of the great albums in the 90's...The members of Nirvana were so talented, and Dave Grohl...a triple threat. i'd give it a 10 out of 10...

September 24, 1991- nevermind hit shelves, definitely a 5/5 however it was way too overproduced for nirvana's sound. i know alot of people who bought nevermind, then went to see nirvana and were disappointed. the nevermind sound made nirvana overblown considering their 1990-1992 shows were relatively terrible.

One of Nirvana's best songs. The song penetrates feelings... even if you dont know what he's talking about. The chorus is very catchy, and more upbeat than the rest of the song. A good song all around again.

Well,
The people in the late 80's got sick of that glamoury shiny happy bands full of s*** they needed something real that was closer to them. Nirvana made the first grunge album 4 the masses, thats why they became the "Legend". Nevermind is not really as great as In Utero but i give it 4/5 becouse of the impact that it has made on the modern music.

I'll give nevermind a 4/5 because it didn't show Nirvana's true colors as well as it could have. Nevermind is one hell of an album and it has had a profound impact on music but it seems a little dolled up for commercial success unlike In Utero. :)

5/5 Nevermind is a rock classic, best album of the 90's. I love the distortion they use for their songs on this CD. They lyrics are so out there, they're not trying to be profound, they're lyrics are well written. The energy from the Dave Grohl and the heavy bass from Krist Novaselic. I love the energy from "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Breed", "Territorial Pissings", "Drain You", "Lithium" and "Stay away" and the melodicness from "Come as you Are", "In Bloom", "Polly", "On A Plain" and "Something in the Way". Truely wanna of the best rock bands of all time.

What is the big deal with the Nirvana? After hearing so much praise for them I went out and brought this album and I really hated it. I was so disappointed. If Kurt Cobain hadn't died, they would have gone on and on, with dwindling sucess until they completely faded after loads of **** albums, Kurt Cobain's death definately kept this band alive, in a twisted, ironic sort of way. Completely over-rated album and band.

Why thank you.
This album was set loose upon the world some time in the 90's, when the funky world of 80's pop had died, to be replaced by mosh pits and 'bling'. What a dreadful time to be alive.

Nirvana seriously is underrated. The best band of the 90s, and this is a fantastic album. I fell in love with every single song (with the exception of Territorial Pissings), and even when I barely heard the opener, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," for the first time, I new that this band was awesome. I think people don't like Nirvana because they believe that the band ruined 80's metal and 80's pop (Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc.), and maybe that's true, but only because the fans thought they were better in the end. Nirvana is a true immortal band of the ages.

Nirvana, the Breeders, The Pixies, and Neil Young are the only artist who succeeded at grunge. Other bands influnenced by Nirvana have come out with crap! NeverMind is a masterpiece that will never be duplicated in the grunge/metal/punk genre.
ever heard of mudhoney?

nirvana's a pretty good band.
but pardon my observation. most people i know who are big Nirvana fans (as in, their favorite band) hardly listen to, or even KNOW of, bands like Pixies, Meatpuppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr.
whom without them, Nirvana would be a pop-punk band.

I call Nirvana a pop-punk band anyway. Seeing as they are a band with clear elements of both pop and punk.

I don't think i've heard of this album before. When was it released?
when did you arrive from outer space? :O
it was released in 1991 and it's one of the best rock albums ever...and one of the most famous so it's hard to believe you're from any place on earth...

the reason he should have heard of it before is because of how often people mention nirvana, and this CD. the band is overrated in that sense.

I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, I find some of their stuff too much like their other stuff. They did however, have the ability to write UNBELIEVABLE songs, and Nevermind, is just one of those albums that you can listen to from beginning to end, without skipping any songs. There is no filler on this album.

10. Stay Away
This song is Dave's first true vocal lead. Probably the worst song on the album sadly, it is still not as bad as some of the other stuff I have heard.
Dave sings on this song? I didn't know that. Are you sure?

The album was of course influential, but despite what most people say, it was not really exceedingly original or interesting. Some songs hold my immediate interest, but usually that doesn't last for long. I'd probably give it a low 3/5.

Mep..good..
Sorry, I love this album (excpet for "Stay Away") but that review was pretty terrible. There wasn't nearly enough detail.

I never really thought Nevermind was all that great. It has some really good songs, but In Utero is MUCH better. :thumb:

I love these little debates we have on Nirvana/Good Charlotte/Green Day.
Good times, good times.

I don't listen to this album much, but it's pretty good. My favorite song is Lounge Act.
I like the bass by Krist on that track :)

My third favorite Nirvana album. Unplugged and In Utero are just better in my opinion. Maybe I'd like it more if they didn't play Lithium and Teen Spirit every 2 seconds on the radio.
