To add to that, Hatebreed definitely stands out as a live band. (as anything influenced by Slayer would, in my opinion). Also Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God have set trends in this genre

What is nu-metal?

It's a relatively commerical movement, not really much of a genre. Basically, it doesn't require a very high degree of musicianship and the songwriting is generally angsty or angry.

There are exceptions, yeah. But finding the really good acts in the glut of MTV crap is a lot of work.

What about progressive? I am a big fan of Tool and I hear people clasify them as progressive. But does it have to do with style, sound or ideas of the music?

Progressive is all about the progression of music. It's about trying new things and trying to elevate muic itself in some form or another. This is both good and bad.

On the one hand, we have acts like Rush (prog music that even non-musicians can enjoy), Yes (every style of music can work together), and Pink Floyd (changing the way we look at styles like the blues).

And on the other, we venture into the mindlessly self-indulgent. The biggest name that comes to mind here is Dream Theater. Astounding virtuosos, but I'm beginning to agree with Ripper22 (another of the R&M regulars) that Mike Portnoy's ego has turned them into one of the most coma-inducing bands ever.

It depends on personal preference. Personally, I'm a big fan of Rush, Queensryche, and Pink Floyd. I recently posted a thread on some lesser known atmospheric prog bands, my favorite of which being Ozric Tentacles.

Conversely, is it worth it to get worked up over the whole thing in the first place? The mods tell us to shut up too.

Myself, I get my kicks by messing with people's heads, though for the most part I only do it to those who have it coming to them. I admit I have a temper, and I can get pretty irritable when real life starts to back up on me. But I'm not a bad guy.

If you look around here, you'll learn fast that stupidity is ubiquitous. Everyone's going to say something embarassing and/or retarded sooner or later, some more than others. And some of these turn into cliches which many of us "vets" endure on a daily basis both hear and in the real world.

For example, at the music shop I go to outside of my campus, I decided one day to try out this really nice acoustic guitar while I was waiting for the repairs on my electric. I checked to see if it was in tune, then played the intro to Roundabout by Yes. One of the clerks actually thanked me for having good taste. Why?

Because there's a group of teenage punk-wannabes who regularly file through the store playing every radio single that's been shoved down our throats since the early 90's, and only a couple of them are any good. I was testing out distortion and flanger pedals once by playing Strange Wings by Savatage and Eagleheart by Stratovarius, and a couple of those kids thought I was making it up off the top of my head. And they still thought I was a bad guitarist because I had never learned Enter Sandman.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. After hearing **** like that for so long, you just want to kill the ones spewing it. I mean like really kill. We're talking Tom Savini death scenes here.

Hey ICB, I figured out how to expand my signature and make it as big as yours. A rockstar is not a paticularly stable job, you get a few gigs in pubs paying very little. Most rockstars had to get a 9-5 job in the beginning to have the money to keep going with their art. And I think you'll find that salesmen in music shops are sick to the back teeth of hearing American Idiot and the opening of Stairway To Heaven. In my local shop there was a sign at one point forbiding people to play Titanic on the piano because they were sick of it.

see the thing is all the death metalheads i went to school with were all suicidal and wanted to kill themselves OR other people. thats what they talked about most of the time...it could just be where i live or not i dont know but that ios the impression that i got. i have nothing against them but it seems they NEVER looked on the brighter side of things ever.

Any idea of what "death metal" they listened to? Because from the sounds of it, they either did not listen to real death metal and it was nu-metal poorly labeled or as Steepike said, they had a mental disorder.

Listen dude, you clearly have no idea what real death metal is. I suggest you take a look at some material off of Death's album The Sound of Perseverence, and Opeth's album Blackwater Park. Both were/are death metal bands, but also very progressive ones.

Chuck Schuldiner and Mikhael Akerfeldt were/are exceptionally talented musicians, and also brilliant songwriters. It's not all about carnage and gore. As a matter of fact, The Sound of Perseverence was almost a thematic album. I believe Chuck himself said, "This is an album for anyone who's ever had a dream."

Interestingly, some conservative nutter chose that as the msot offensive scene in the flick. I would have though Elijah Wood's death scene would have been a little more offensive than that to someone so squeamish.

I mean, come on! Not to ruin the movie for anyone, but that is one of the best, goriest ironic deaths ever. And wolves are just plain cool.

People mostly ask me to what's the difference between power/trash/heavy/gothic and melodic metal when i let them hear it they mostly understand but to me the difference is simple Heavy is more rhythm and solo like TRash is less solo and more hard riffs Power is a little har dto explain for me(as i only like Helloween as power)
Gothic is lots of melodies like in nightwish whit the synthesiser. Melodic like Sonata arctica is obvious to hear like the way he plays the solo's on the guitar

Theres an "h" in thrash, and Nightiwsh and Sonata Arctica are both power metal. Gothic is stuff like Moonspell, allthough I know little about the genre as it isn't very big. :)

Nu-metal is the newest craze to hit mainstream rock radio. Without trying to bash it too much, generally speaking the music structure is very simplistic. Lyrics cover subjects that are close to todays teens (depression, abuse, drugs etc). There are very few guitar solos and the one's that are there are typically very simple and short. Vocals can range from the more metal influenced to a fusion of metal and rap. Guitars are often downtuned or drop tuned. This genre is generally not very popular among listeners of other metal music, but it is the newest craze and therefore very promoted and heavily played on the radio.
