My cousin started listening to The Band. :upset:

Here's the story on him: He takes everything I've ever done, and starts doing it. I started guitar, he picked it up a month later. I started listening to Classic Rock, he started copying me. He would've never heard of Zeppelin, Floyd, Cream, The Doors, Yes, or The Who without me. Luckily he's only picked the common CR bands. Basically he's a faggot.

Today he tells me that he bought a greatest hits cd of The Band from Best Buy. He's never heard a song by them. I made the mistake of mentioning The Last Waltz in front of him, and it was over. He would've never found out about them, ever, in his life, if I didn't tell him about that movie. And now he knows. Everyone I ask has never heard of The Band (except for you guys), and now my cousin knows them. My life is over. I am actually enraged right now, seeing red if you will. :upset:

On a side note, I rule his *** at guitar, and I will always have that on him.

What's wrong with exposing your cousin to good music?

for album intros Pink Floyd always takes the cake. It seems like they write an album, and then add a beginning and end to it to make it complete.

One of These Days and Speak to Me (or does Breathe come first? i can never remember which is which) are my two favourite album openers. Although Strange Days is also a great opener.

The Rain Song is greater than any other Zeppelin song. George Harrison loved Led Zeppelin, and he told Jimmy Page that they didn't write enough ballads. So, Zeppelin took Harrison's ballad, Here Comes The Sun, and made a ballad with the opposite meaning. Hence, The Rain Song.

I think it's a good song, but you really appreciate the genius of Jimmy Page once you learn how to play it. The guitar is tuned to open Gsus, which is (as far as I know) unique to that song.

I've heard some of their songs, my favourite is Going up the Country, which is probably their most recognized song. Their singer kind of has an odd voice, but the songs are great.

Jim Morrison really liked them, one time when he had a long beard (no one recognized him) he climbed on stage while Canned Heat were playing a gig and asked if he could sing with them. They said yeah, and after they started playing and he starting singing, they realized who he was. Even though they were a successful band on their own terms and they wrote great songs, they never reached the success of other big bands of that era.

I read that in my Jim Morrison biography.

On the Road Again is probably their most famous song. Alan Wilson (guitar/harmonica) sings that song. Also Henry Vestine from The Mothers of Invention is in Canned Heat. They also have an album with John Lee Hooker.
Which one you read?

I thought Joe McDonald was the greatest.

The Stephen Davis one is the best definitely. I've read a couple, but that is the only one I end up referring to. It provides anything you would need to know about Jim Morrisons life (and death).

He also wrote Hammer of the Gods, which was the big Zeppelin biography. Has anyone read that? I've spent a lot of time reading Zeppelin biographys on the net, I am thinking of buying the book just so I have actual proof I'm not making facts up.

I think being a biographer would be an awesome job...I practically study musicians lives as it is, I might as well get paid for it.

Does anyone here think they could actually write a good biography on someone famous? (and have it sell copies?) Ironic yes?

If you want me to go into detail about it...

Hair metal sucks because:

1) The entire genre was defined, both literally and nonliterally, by their look. The music was secondary to the Aquanet and spandex. That is a complete travesty to music.

2) 90% of rock music that was made in the 80's sounds exactly the same. It's all formulaic: write a song about how hard you rock, make sure to talk about how many women you bag each night and have a fast guitar solo in it. Then, write a sappy power ballad and go to #1.

3) Who the hell names their band Britny Fox?

I recall Voodoo saying he was at a friend's house. His friend's parents were supposed to be gone for a couple of days, so they got some Acid. They then took the Acid and started playing videogames. Eventually, he started noticing ripples on the screen and everything was kind of signifacant.

He and his friend had noticed that the LSD had taken, so they walked around and kind of test it out. Voodoo then stated he walked up to a still life painting filled with oranges. As he starred at the painting, an orange dropped off the painting and proceded to roll on the floor. He attempted to chase the orange, but of course could not pick it up. He became very emotional but managed to get over it.

He and his friend then went up stairs to listen to music. I believe they put on Pink Floyd. As they were on their backs watching the ceiling and listening, major ripples and color changes would occur on the ceiling. The accents and sways of the ripples matched the music perfectly. Eventually, he and his friend would fall asleep for some time.

That's all I remember. Pretty cool though.

On acid, your trips last a good 8-12 hours and they are very vivid. Real 100% hallucinations involving all of the senses, and depending on your mood, all of your feelings inside before you start, your surroundings, and who you're with, they can be fantastic or nightmarish. When you have a bad trip, hear me now: it is the worst experience you had, because it is your imagination coming to life. Acid will stay in your body forever, there is no way to rid it completely from your system. It is very dangerous. Shroom trips are more like 4-6 hours, and you won't see that much; the only really stong hallucinogen is LSD. You will see society, the world, and life as a whole more clearly than you have ever before, and you'll be disgusted by this existence. You'll have revelations that will affect your life far after your trip. My friend shroomed and he is now a vegetarian, very self-conscious, and miserable about the state of his life, but it is probably a good thing in the long run because now he is focused on bettering himself.

Edit: For both of these, you MUST be happy before you try them, and you should think of it as an intellectual experience, not a jump off of a bridge.

Acid is more intense that shrooms. From what I hear, acid causes you to lose all perception of reality, so you begin to trip and hallucinate. With shrooms, you will hallucinate but not lose all grasp of what is real.

The fluid in your spinal column and your vertebrae will carry traces of acid to the death, and some users from the 60's have reported flashbacks when they crack their back and the fluid is released. Flashbacks aren't always a good thing, mind you.

People make such a big deal out of music to listen to when you're high. You can listen to anything pretty much and just jam to it.

Is it weird that I've never listened to music while high? Actually, I've never even been high.

Drugs just show that your imagination is weak.

I respect people who don't do drugs, but I can guarantee you that actually getting high is a lot more fun than imagining you are high. The truth is, the more imagination you have, the more fun drugs are. Of course I've only smoked weed and tried DXM (not very fun). I'd try shrooms but you're not supposed to do it if you have any issues/problems at the time, so it wouldn't be a good idea for me. And getting high to any music is decent as long as it has some sort of a bassline you can groove to....now off the topic of drugs.

I voted for Paranoid in the album poll, there were a few that I would like to go through, but that one really stands out. I think it's got some really great songs on it.

Probably not, unless he could see into the future.

Jim Morrison could see the future in a way. He was quoted saying around the time the Vietnam war is ending, a new type of music will come out that will be simple, raw and full of rebellion...as the vietnam war ended Punk music started up. He also said that in a few decades he can imagine people making music using electronic machines to get strange sounds, instead of normal instruments...which was techno. Jim knows all and sees all. (and don't correct me by saying "knew all and saw all")

Anyone who isn't a fan of the Rolling Stones must admit that Gimme Shelter is a cool song. Anyone know who the female singer is in that song?

edit- why the hell does everyone keep naming random bands? Tom Petty and the Heatbreakers, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Neil Young and Crazyhorse...do those fit into whatever you guys are naming?

Oh so I was right.

I have this one poster in my room, and it's like an ad for an upcoming Doors concert, but it bugs the hell out of me because it says "Jim Morrison and the Doors". I hate when people get that wrong, and it definitely shouldn't be printed on a poster. It's funny though because I bought it, and it says Dec. 10, 1967 New Haven Arena...after I read the Jim Morrison biography I realized that was the concert where he got peppersprayed by a cop backstage, and then he went onstage and started a riot, then got arrested.

edit- woops I suppose Neil Young and Crazyhorse wouldn't fit in there (I mentioned them in my last post.)

I like it because I bought it when I went to Hawaii. There was this awesome store that had all sorts of great stuff...guitars signed by musicians, golden records beside the record cover and signed by the whole band (framed into one thing). They had some drawings that John Lennon and Jerry Garcia drew, and a couple other musicians I can't remember.

Of course I only had like twenty bucks, so I bought the cheapest thing there. My brother got one that promotes a concert that says Jefferson Airplane, with opening guest The Who. I find it ironic because in a couple years, The Who would be huge, and Jefferson Airplane wouldn't even exist.

Yeah, when I was in North Carolina last summer, we went into the most hemp-filled hippie store. There were quilts of Jerry Garcia all over the place and the owner was a wrinkly old hippie.
