George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, Bob Marley, etc
All Christians? I'm just about 105% sure Bob Marley was Rastafarian, what were Garcia and Harrison all about. I think Harrison was pretty Christian wasn't he. I have no clue about Jerry Garcia though.
edit- like Rock said, most Canadians aren't really religious (although i know a few who are very religious). What's your religion all about Disconnection Notice? I'm actually embaressed to say I haven't a clue.

When you're agnostic or deist, you believe in God, but you don't agree with the teachings of major religions.

never eard of that
Guys, badmoon and I have an idea. We think that this htread should be changed to the classic rock/jam rock thread. We talk about jam enough here and it would be nice to keep it all on topic. Plus it is "rock" music. Classic rock and jam have ties, the dead and the allmans are a bit of both.
What's everyone's opinion?

Seriously?
EDIT: To led_zep_luvr. As for the issue rock not roll brought up, I can't see why not, even if I don't like jam bands.
Indeed, it's not like the conversation would change.

B. Marley - Chrisian/Rastafarian
J. Garcia - Christian
G. Harrison - Christian
Jerry actually strongly disliked John Lennon as a person because he interfiered with his belief. When Garcia was going to meet Lennon for the first time at the backstage of a Dead concert, Lennon approached him and kept calling Jerry "J.C.". Lennon also asked Bill Graham (Fillmore owner/Grateful Dead friend) to find him a large amp and guitar so he could walk on stage and play over Garcia's.

Hey that's sorta what I am I suppose, and I didn't even realize it. I like to believe there is a higher power of some sort, like a God, or guardian angels, or spirits (like Native Americans belive)...but I find it hard to believe all the stuff religions try to tell us.
Do you guys know of any Christian (or any other religion) classic rock bands? I remember I've heard one song from a Christian rock band on my local Classic Rock radio station, it wasn't a bad song, although it was a little cheesy (kinda 80's). I don't remember the name or the band though.
Guys, enough of the religon talk. We need to focus on the issue at hand.
Badmoon

We all say yes, plus we are still on topic. We are talking about Classic Rock artists that are religious.

I don't like having a middleman around who takes my money, bullies me around, and tells me how to worship God (which, let's not kid ourselves, is all Christianity, and probably Islam and Judiasm, does). I think people should be free to worship God (or whatever higher power they believe in) any way they choose.
I personally can't think of any Christian classic rock bands offhand...I don't think any classic rock bands were religious because they wanted to be the exact opposite of the generation before them (who were for the most part deeply religious). Just a crackpot theory I came up with.

Is someone complaining about our talk of jam bands? I haven't notice anyone telling us to keep on track in this thread. But if it's not a hassle for the mods to change the name of the thread, then why not..it's not gonna hurt anything. I think it's a decent idea, as long as Bonzo doesn't mind us changing his wonderful thread, as it is the only thing newer members know him by anyway.
We might as well just call it the "Classic Rock and Jam Band Community Thread". That way there's just about no way we can get off topic ;) (not totally serious of course)

Did Bob Dylan become a jew, your christian and then become a jew again? I'm confuzzeled.

Bob Dylan grew up Jewish, lost his faith somewhere along the line, and then became a born-again Christian, from what I can gather.

when he was pissed off about being famous, he tried to make people hate him, so he went to another country (i'm sure someone here knows the name of the country) and got a picture of himself in a skullcap (is that the correct term?). It didn't really work out the way he wanted it to though, just got him more publicity.

a boston fan eh. I'm a fan as well. Their debut album is definitely their best (best selling debut album of all time, before NSYNC came along). My favourite song is definitely Peace of Mind. I find their vocals are almost Beach Boyish the way they fit in three part harmonies, not to mention the harmonized guitar solos. What can I say, I'm a sucker for harmony (Simon and Garfunkel anyone?)
edit- it only took a couple Kansas songs to win me over, although I've only heard a few of their hit songs, nothing more than that. Carry On My Wayward Son is almost a masterpiece (using the term loosely)

I don't understand why so many people call Jimmy Page a thief. Bob Dylan said in his book that a lot of his earlier songs were just covers of very obscure folk songs. he also said most of the songs he wrote on his earlier albums had melodies and chord progressions directly taken from folk songs. The only reason he didn't get caught is because a lot of the folk artists didn't have record contracts or anything, and they could rarely prove that they wrote a song. Bob Dylan managed to become known as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and poor Jimmy Page is always referred to as a thief.
and Eric Clapton once wrote that most of his blues solos were mainly composed of licks taken from many different blues songs, and converted into the same key so he could use it for his songs. yet people still call him one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
i'm not trying to argue or anything, i just want people to know that Jimmy Page isn't the only artist alive to borrow songs/riffs/lyrics.

Well, chord progressions and melodies are commonly not original. A lot of bands come up with some and don't even no that they've been used. As for chord progressions, songs usually consist of basic chords like G, D, C, A and F. It isn't bad that two artists just so happen to have G, D and C inside of their song.
But stealing a riff or phrase is a big thing. Jimmy Page did that, plus he was aware he was stealing. He took advantage of old Bluesmen who were ignorant to current copyright laws.

now thats not complety true, you cant judge bands just by the type of music they play, that is not what classic rock is about, i like many different types of music outside and around the area of classic rock. for example, there are a few punk bands that i like, such as the clash, the talkingheads, and the velvet underground (though they are also considered by many as classic rock)
Also if people didn't steal things from others we wouldn't have a lot of great things we do today, but the point is that usually in music when some 'steals' something from another musican, they will most likey make it better, well at least in classic rock bands.

Yea but think about all the blues songs they did. I Can't Quit You Baby, You Shook Me, and The Lemon Song all have riffs and lyrics from old blues songs. I think Babe I'm Gonna Leave You does too. (Most of their songs have old blues lyrics, which is the obvious part.) Personally, I don't think Page intended on stealing the riffs and marketing them as his own, but rather redoing them in his own songs and paying homage to his blues idols. I used to think he was arrogant and he did steal all that stuff, but he's a nice guy (or at least appears so in interviews and movie clips and stuff) and stealing riffs doesn't seem like something he'd do.

True. Most of the great musicians that ever existed in this planet were black. In jazz we have Wes Montgomery and Miles Davis, if we take a look at the blues, we have B.B King and John Lee Hooker, in rock music Mr. Hendrix. ****, maybe that´s why I suck on guitar, , just kidding.

A guitar solo piece called The Clap (misleading title - great song)

i've heard neil young referred to as the Godfather of Grunge before..at first i didn't really understand it, but i suppoes it makes sense. what do you guys think?
yeh that's true - he was one of the first "real" grunge artists. He fused together folk, rock & elements of country/rockabilly.
You can't really classify Young in a genre group, and that's what makes him so grungy.
I think it's just because his electric playing is sloppy and distorted.

That probably won't happen. We need to get back on topic, this isn't the "rep" thread.
What do you guys think of Yes? We haven't discussed them in a while. I think they're a great prog rock band, and the members are all very talented.
Any thoughts? How bout favorite cds?
chris squire is what stands out to me about yes. some great bass songs are tempus fugit, soundchaser, and of course roundabout. my personal favorite overall song is heart of the sunrise (which also includes a blistering bass performance). yes, however, take a backseat to king crimson for my favorite prog group. king crimson anyone?

very true. his vocals were kinda grungy too, i am never quite sure if he's singing in tune or not, although he usually sang much higher than the grunge bands of the ninetys.
edit- and i know barely anything about Yes, except for a few songs. i'm gonna go check my record collection and see if i have any of their albums, maybe i just missed one.
edit edit- no, no Yes records. although i did leave my amp on all night while at work...woopsies. :upset:

if that's directed towards me...i can just download some songs, which ones would be good to get a good taste of what Yes is all about? What's their best album to buy? I don't have AIM and my MSN isn't working, so sending songs are difficult.
I've heard the song thats like "I've seen all good people turn their heads.." and I enjoyed it. Actually, I just found out that was Yes like a month ago.

If you think about it, Elvis was really the one that made black music accesible for white people. He's more of a theif than Jimmy Page.
Elvis is not a theif nor was he the first man to make White people like Black music. I believe the first Jazz album was created by a White band.
As far as Rock n Roll goes, Whites did not steal it from Black people. Rock music is actually pretty equal between both races.
Rock n Roll = White Melodies (Country) + Black Rhythm (Blues)
Elvis combined those two elements.
Also, if you trace music back far enough, you'd be amazed how much White Folk music influenced Blues.

Once again nobody mentions Rory Gallagher, who is easily as good as Hendrix, Clapton, Page etc. etc.

we've talked about Rory Gallagher before, unless you are talking about the whole discussion about stealing music. We've talked about his music and guitar playing , he's pretty good.
I think a lot time ago the laws about "stealing" music weren't nearly as strict. That's why folk, jazz, and blues artists often did covers of songs, and recieved all the credit. It wasn't really until Rock music started, that the legal aspects of coprights and stuff came into play. That's why everyone came down so hard on Zeppelin, they were doing exactly what all the blues and folk guys were doing, except that they were a mainstream band so it was a huge uproar. if they did that twenty years earlier, no one would have cared or noticed.
Bleh, most punk, hard rock, metal and rap steal stuff constantly without judgement.
And put it in a slightly different key, that's how they get away with it.

Why are you telling me that? I tryed to show how each races played a role in Rock music, while others tryed to say it was all Black people.

This topic really has no redeeming value and people always end up getting angry, so let's talk about Yes.

You should definitely check out The Yes Album and Fragile. Roundabout, Mood For A Day, Starship Trooper, and All Good People are some of my favorite songs.

dont you bring youre new rock in here. cant you read the thread title? canned heat is good but i cant seem to get into them. which is odd since i love blues-rock. has anyone heard of a band called frijid pink? they were an old detroit band and the only song i can find or have heard from them is a cover of house of the rising sun. it rocked. they kept the majority of the song the same but added in some killer guitar. check it out if you can find them.

In my Health class, one of the questions on the final was "Why is acid so incorperated with music from the late 60's?"
I think I was the only kid who gave an in depth answer on that.
Also I just got After the Gold Rush by Neil Young.
One of my new favorite albums ever.
Edit - They didn't say acid though. They said the really long term that LSD stands for.
