its somewhat weird thinking about how big the Stones are. like some people consider them the greatest band of all time, but think about it...
early to mid sixties mod era: the Who, and the Beatles, were better than the Stones
later sixties psychadelic era: tons of bands were better than the Stones
seventies arena rock: Zeppelin, Floyd, The Who, countless bands were bigger than the Stones
eighties: they still put out albums, and toured a lot, but really didn't do anything too amazing.
90's to now: still nothing that was too great.
i think they are so famous, just because they have been touring and putting out albums for so long, they never really went away. there has always been better bands than them.

Hehe, well being in The Rolling Stones, Jagger was allowed to have that big an ego.
Your classic rock knowledge is impressive, slowhand.
That happens when you are bored and have nothing else to do. Of course, when I'm interested in something, I tried to find as much of information on that thing as I possibly can.

Good points. I think they get a lot of credit for being their at the beginning of the British invasion and really influencing and moving rock music. Their influence>their music in my opinion.

They also were part of the first wave of the British Invension. I think they are so big because they were the bad boys of music during those days. Today they seem tame, but back then, they were outrages, probably the Eminem of that period.
(I never thought I would put the Rolling Stones and Eminem on the same sentence... )

Plus, they kept rock alive after the disaster at Altamont, the Beatles' breakup, and the deaths of Hendrix and Morrison.
Oh, and their best material (Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, Beggars' Banquet, Exile on Main Street) is fantastic.

ya thats true. they were known more for their personalities than other bands at the time. they were so much more raw and sexual, than say...the beatles.
i'm sure you all know this, but in American Pie, Don Mclean refered to Mick Jagger as the devil. He hated Mick Jagger so much.

I have a friend who hates the Stones just because of Mick Jagger... actually, because of how Jagger performs... weird.
But I'm slowly getting him into the Stones. 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Paint it Black' are very tempting.

i had never heard that before, is what he's telling me fact or fiction?

Exile on Main Street is just flawless imo. I actually happen to like most of their albums. The people who only know the Stone's hits are really missing out on a lot of good material, I happen to not like their singles nearly as much as some of their most classic albums on the whole such as Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, or Beggar's Banquet.

Well, using the word "better" can't really describe a bands success. The other bands listed may have been better then the Stones but the Stones were probably bigger. Especially in the late Sixties. The only band that was bigger then them was the Beatles and at times the Doors. Also in the 80's they were still releasing fairly good material while most of the bands from the 60's were gone.

i can't play any classic rock songs on my harmonica, i can only play things like When The Saints Go Marching In, and Battle Hymn of the Republic or whatever it's called. I havent tried learning any new songs in about three years though. I'm thinking of actually learning how to play harmonica well, so i can play Dylan songs.
Hey Badmoon (or anyone who knows the answer), who all plays guitar on the song Terrapin Station? I think somewhere around 12 minutes into the song, there is a guitar solo that doesnt sound like anyone that i'm used to hearing in the Grateful Dead.
Did they have another guitarist for that song, or is it one of the normal Grateful Dead members?

Well, being that "Terrapin Station" is not a "normal" Grateful Dead song, it wouldn't be that surpising that the guitar playing wouldn't be normal. So, it is most likely Garcia.

It would be a lot better sounding than Let it Be, i can tell you that much. I'm just sick of this girl wanting to play crappy pop songs with one guitar part, and then asking me to fancy it up for three different guitars.
edit- i can hear two guitars very distinctly in Friend of the Devil, and a mandolin. Someone could just play chords, or someone could play the mandolin part, it would be easy.

haha i wish. she wants to play this song called Soco Amaretto Lime by Brand New. anyone heard it? it has one extremely lame three chord guitar part, and horrible off key whiny lyrics. i dont even think it has bass.

Three guitarists?
That's overkill...
thickasabrick
01-02-2005, 09:49 PM
that's not overkill. of course, we really could do it with just two, but we would feel bad if we had to cut someone out.
Hotel California has eight different guitar parts, so basically, three isn't "overkill," it's underkill.
edit- usually what we do, is take a simple song, like Let It Be, and think of a good fingerpicked pattern, and then usually a dual guitar solo. it's actually pretty fun, having another person to solo with, you can do interesting things.

The Eagles only have 3 guitarists, so it's not really possible to have 8 parts, unless you meant that the parts we're playing at different times throughout the song.

well they can (and did) lay down eight different guitar tracks in the studio. of course, if you have heard it live, they usually play it much different anyways. if you go to mxtabs, and look through the tabs for it, you will find some chord charts, the live version and the studio version. the studio version has eight different parts.
its easy to play with three, and doesnt sound bad with two. all you really need is an acoustic and an electric.

Moving Pictures is my Favorite album by rush...I thought it was great. Didnt expect much when i picked it up of a CVS clearence rack though, but it was good.
I got Vapor Trails the other day, and i was still impressed, even for an album released in 2002. Most bands suck after almost 30 years, if they can even exsist that long. Rush is the top selling band in albums (i read), and the only that survived for this long without regrouping or breaking apart, and yet hasnt been on the cover of Rolling Stones once.

Me and the guitarist both sing, as in he sings some songs, and I sing some, etc. We wanted a separate vocalist just to give us more flexibility (so we're not limited to only what we can play while singing), but we kinda gave up on that. We actually had a vocalist (who wasn't very good), but we kicked him out because we sang better.

And the coolest thing about Jazz is Dead is that they remake Grateful Dead songs. They are each highly respected Jazz, Jam Band and Fusion artists. I really like that they have to highly respected Jazz artists who play songs by a band that played a small role in their careers and known genres.
Jimmy Herring - Aquarium Rescue Unit, Allmans, The Dead.

the problem with limewire is it's becoming too popular. once a music sharing dealy gets too popular, it starts getting attacked by the courts, and virus's also swarm in.
i've probably tried using just about every program there is, and they are all awesome to start with, but once more people start using them they start to fall apart. that will happen with limewire soon enough...so stop telling other people to start using it! :)

Yea man! Love this movie. Love it! Yea! Actually I stopped watching it everyday, but that's only cause I'd watched it everyday for two weeks. And now I'm watching Pompeii and playing MGS3. But lets talk about it still!
My favorite song on there is probably It Makes No Difference, although its hard to choose cause there's so many great ones. What song is your favorite?

No. They are a great band in terms of influence and a good band in terms of music.
I never understood what was so special about The Stones, they just seem okay to me.
