They were screwin' with the melody a little too much in the beginning. But that song has always had a crappy melody if you ask me.

Why dont you two go to the Jam Band thread?

Are you trying to be funny!

Phil Lesh is classic rock, therefore There and Back Again is relevant.

Bike's my favorite because "I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house, I don't know why I call him Gerald, He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse."

I think it is a great album with some really great tracks on it, Strange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love, Swlabr, Tales of Brave Ulysses just to name probably the best tracks on an all round good record, i don't think it is overrated but Fresh Cream and Wheels of Fire also has some great tracks that are often overlooked.

Woodstock

I think Swlabr is the strongest track on the album.

New avatar(but we can't talk about it)

Technically Swlabr is one of the stronger songs, but my favourite would have to be Tales of Brave Ulysses, at the moment anyway.

so whos your favourite band Ulysses?

and Badmoon, i noticed D'addario was trying to sell their mandolin strings by putting David Grismans name on the front. in our filing cabinet full of strings at work, there was a pack that said "david grisman uses these strings". i've never heard anything by grisman, but he must be **** good.

I got that for xmas, and it wasnt anything i expected from floyd. I orginally thought it was like, a live concert (hence the DVD name), but it wasnt that, but it wasnt like a biography either...it was an "idea", like the movie said. I totally changed my ways of looking at floyd, and this was all before DSOTM took off.

ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?

Reccomended Albums (some left out due to lack of my hearing them): Strange Days, S/t(best, in my opinion), La Women, Morrison Hotel (weakest of the those 4, still a good album). Or you could get one of their 49827266755468257687 greatest hits albums.

Songs- The End, People Are Strange, Roadhouse Blues, People Of The Sun, Riders on The Storm, La Women, Strange days, Light My Fire. Those should get you started.

The last album they released was with Gary Cherone in 1998. It wasn't their best and they parted company with Cherone shortly afterwards. After that they didn't tour because Eddie had cancer and various other things stopped them from going. This year the settled their differences with Sammy Hagar and he is now back in the fold. Apparently Alex VH said they were going to return to the studio to work on new material. Fingers crossed everything goes well. :)

"Moby Dick" off of HtWWW is horrible. It's suicide-inducingly boring. A 15 minute drum solo? Are you kidding me? I hate how all amatuer musicians (drummers and guitarists alike) listen to this crap. I play guitar and I hate Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and all the other "virtuosos" and I can't stand Dream Theater. Good point. But it doesn't mean he's a bad guitarist. I'm guessing you don't believe that Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist that ever lived.

Anyways, I like 'Heartbreaker' of "How the West Was Won" not because of it's technicality, or because it's just "Jimmy Page man!" I like it because it seems that he was enjoying what he was playing. For me, there's nothing better than to hear a musician when he is enjoying himself/herself while performing in front of a live audience. Jimmy Page was never a guitarist who wanted to be perfect, he just wanted to play guitar, and that's what I like and that's what I feel he is doing on that track.

I was one of them kids who didn't see what Jimmy Page was all about. I thought people were dumb to go on and proclaim him one of the best guitarist there are. But that album won me over. They were a great live band. Sod everything else.

But it's cool that you have your own opinion, though. Don't take this as me trying to flame you, I was just bored and wanted to write something, since I haven't posted in here in so long.

I hate how all amatuer musicians (drummers and guitarists alike)listen to this crap.
Oh and who are you exactly? Talking down on all these "amateur musicians". And since when are guitarists and drummers the only musicians?
I suppose you've never visited the drum forum where amateurs and pro's alike have drum solo competitions. And I suppose you've never visited a place like drummerworld.com where you might learn that all these supposedly unmusical show-offs can actually play music.

I play guitar and I hate Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and all the other "virtuosos" and I can't stand Dream Theater. And to use an example off of HtWWW, I don't like JImmy Page's sloppy guitar solo on "Heartbreaker" either.
Whoopdie doo and good for you. What the **** do you want? An award?

What possible explanation is there to liking it? "Dude, look at how talented it is!"It's like reading a book simply because it has a lot of big words in it.
You're so right. I mean, I've been such an idiot this whole time. What is wrong with me? I mean this whole time I've been sitting listening to virtuosos that have mastered instruments and use their mastery of the instruments to produce unique sounds and music. It's like I'm a writer trying to expand my vocabulary, what a dumb thing to do eh!

It's also wrong to listen to musicians that use their more limited skills to express music in interesting ways because that is also different, exciting and may lead to helping you create some amazing music. We sould ban all music that attempts to further expand on a musician's ability to express themselves.

Give me a break from your "musicality and proficiency cannot go hand in hand" attitude.

indeed It was a good comment. That's the conclusion I came to in the end. If only my friend hadn't cracked my live Wheels of fire cd. :(

Has anyone heard Jethro Tull Live at the Isle of Wight? I found it and decided to pick it up, they seem to put on quite a show. Very good so far.

I think that Cream itself its incredibly underrated by rock fans. I don't know many people who have even listened to them. They were the ones who forged what would become Zeppelin's audience, but they have little to no recognition by today's listener.

What a shame.

And to use an example off of HtWWW, I don't like JImmy Page's sloppy guitar solo on "Heartbreaker" either. What possible explanation is there to liking it? "Dude, look at how talented it is!" It's like reading a book simply because it has a lot of big words in it.

you wouldnt like the Zeppelin DVD then, Bonhams drum solo in Moby Dick is about half an hour long. I'm not a drummer, but i find it pretty exciting.

but i agree with what you are saying about a lot of shredders, or virtuosos as you called them.

slowhand
01-01-2005, 08:48 PM
Yeah, that's the only thing they recognized.. and barely. "Tears in Heaven" has deminished his virtuoso years to nothing more than a lost memory in a sea of pop wailing.

(.****, I got rather poetic there)

You've got to be kidding. Cream is one of the first 60's bands I ever heard. It's all part of this classic rock fad going on. People listen to it because it's "cool," but don't take it any more seriously than they took Sum 41 and Blink182 three years ago.

Jethro Tull... Well, I'm not a big fan. Really can't get into their style *coughflutecough* but what I hear from them is good. Might give them some time later.

Did you know that on the Rock 'n Roll Circus they wanted to have an unknown band amongst the stars, you know, to give them a push into the mainstream. It came down to two bands. Jethro Tull and another band. The other band was too guitar-orientated for Jagger's taste and decided to put Tull instead.

That "guitar-orientated" band was the still very young Led Zeppelin. Ironically, they would be more famous than Tull... as if you guys didn't know that.

I prefer the early Tull to the later Tull, my favorite era is up to and including Thick As a Brick. They have a strange style but I find it very interesting, and obviously it is original. They cover a lot of genres in their music, especially on early albums like This Was, Stand Up, and Benefit. While they may not be your first choice for a favorite band, they are a very talented group and make for an interesting listen.

Oh and i totally love how Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for best metal album in the '88 Grammys. Everyone was totally suprised, and even Kirk Hammet made some very angry comments about it after. I mean at the time, everyone (including Metallica) thought Metallica were metal gods, and i'm sure the vast majority of Metallica fans didnt even know who Jethro Tull was.

You know what else I found strange about that?

Page played on some Stones track when he was into the whole session guitarist thing. Then here he comes, with a new band, and Jagger didn't even seem to be interested in them. I mean, Page played for the Stones, they could at least put him on the bill. Tull did one song, what would if cost them to put Zeppelin on with just one song as well.

But when Zeppelin came along, they sold more albums and filled out more stadiums than the Stones were (that was during the 70's).

Yea but he was paid as a session guitarist. Jagger didn't owe him anything after that. Besides it turns out that Page made out just fine without Jagger giving him the gig.

Still, you would think he would have a good heart, and to put him on a track instead of Richards... I mean, that must mean they thought he was better than Richards to do that track.

I think if I was in Jagger's position I would have considered putting them on the bill just because of that.
