I know they're not technically classic rock, but they have a good sound, and I don't really know how to classify them at all so... what does everyone think of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones? Unbelievably talented, in my opinion. Victor Wooten does way better with them than when he's solo.

Yeah, The Flecktone play around with music a lot. At times, Bela and the rest will play Celtic Folk, Progressive Bluegrass, and usually certain types of Jazz. The music is very interesting. Each musician has a load of talent, and it's quite easy to see. They are also fantastic to see live.

I prefer Bela's Bluegrass releases with Sam Bush, Tony Rice, and such. And as of now, I am a bigger fan of On and On, opposed to Brushfire Fairytales. But that may change :).
I had another family party, and I just got Phish bootlegs from Coventry (There last show) and the show they played with Jay Z.

EDIT: Some real meaningful lyrics from "The End":
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best, The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us, The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us
That's real poetry for sure!

Very interesting thread. I found this forum through Googling for info on a Cream Reunion. I am a working musician(bassist) since 1966 (not a misprint, I was 15) was heavily influenced by seeing Cream in 1968. They combined elements of blues, rock and jazz the world had never heard before. With Marshall amps stacked to the ceiling, which was a new idea, only Jimi Hendrix had done it. Now a reunion is interesting to me because they were far more than just a rock band, they were very improvisational, like jazz.
I have been more of a jazz fan for years, but it all blends together. I like classic rock because many of the musicians could really play their instruments, and some of the best songs have lots of staying power. I just KNEW that acts like the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin and the Who and Cream and of course Jimi Hendrix, would be listened to for many, many years, which was an absurd idea at the time, because Rock was just for teenagers then. But that music had a quality I knew would last, and I was right.
Hendrix is still the best electric guitarist who ever lived, though clearly Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck were all incredible. Strange and unexpected that all but Jimi are still alive and reasonably well. And i really learned to love jazz because of classic rock. See, Jack Bruce from Cream was a a jazz player, played with the drummer from the best Miles Davis quintet (Tony Williams), Tony also played with John McLaughlin, who Miles Davis introduced when he practically practically invented jazz-rock fusion. From there I learned about the real Miles Davis music, then learned about John Coltrane, who played even before my time. Its all connected, Cream is not substantially different in quality from john Coltrane, the greatest of the jazz musicians.
Your responses?

I got for Xmas mostly repeats of Cds for my car:
Allman Bros. - Eat A Peach, Live At Fillmore East
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping
New ones:
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited, great CD
Derek and the Dominos - Layla and other assorted love songs, way better then I thought, I like it a lot and want to get their Fillmore one
CCR- Greatest Hits Volume 1, nice since I'm not into them a whole lot although I have Green River
Pearl Jam - Greatest Hits, pretty darn good
My mom couldn't find the Jam Band section in our local Cd store so I got none....it's labled in big letters JAM BANDS :( She also got me a Marshall Tucker Band Cd but it's the wrong one so I'll have to get their s/t she got their newest one which kinda sucks.
And speaking of like older people from the 60's/70's three teachers in my school went to Woodstock, one of them is now a deacon lol.

I also love the Neil Young and Clapton songs (my two favorite songs that aren't just The Band LOL WACKY) Seriously though, I can't get over how cool Robbie is. i agree with most things people are saying here....classic rock is still the best....even though it may be 30 years old. how can someone deny that the classics like led zeppelin, the who, the beatles, the doors, pink floyd, the guess who, eric clapton and all the others isnt good, talent filled music. all of these bands have great musicians (guitarists) and are good to listen to unless your britney spears' number 1 fan. classic rock is by far the best music out there....and the excuse that the music is old and the guys are washed up isnt a good excuse.
oh and check out the james gang if you havent already....theyve got some good stuff

If you've ever heard of The Old Town School of Folk Music (I think that's the name), go there. They're based here, but are spread out. They offer classes, clinics, workshops, and small concerts. There concert hall only fits about 1,000. So, it will surely be a great show, that is if I do go.
The only place I go for guitars is the Crowfoot NW guitarworks. That might be a little out of the way though :/

is it the best one? or is it just closer to you? since i dont know where i am, and i have a few days with nothing to do, i dont mind driving all over the city. i refuse to go back to regina without a marshall halfstack in my backseat.
oh ya and i finished my Bob Dylan book already, i couldn't put it down. it was great, although i can really tell he hates being famous. He went into great detail about his Greenwhich Village club days, and then zipped forward to the early seventies for a while, then zipped forward to the late eighties.
he only briefly touched upon the sixties, and the mid seventies where he came out with some good albums. but man is he great at writing books, i thought it was just songs he was good at.
It's not the best but it's where I go for lessons and where I get my guitar stuff. Some stuff is overpriced but they have a lot of good prices too. They will let you play the guitars if you show an interest in buying something.
*I have no clue of any other guitar shops. It's just the closest to where I live.

the book is weird because it's called Chronicles: Volume 1
i dunno how he plans on having more volumes, because he basically went over his whole life, unless he plans on writing a book about him writing chronicles.
i felt bad for him at times, because he was, and only wanted to be, a musician. but people were trying to force him to be a political icon and protester. he was forced to stay inside his house all day because hoards of protesters were always outside his door trying to get him to lead them to Washington or something, and he just never wanted to. He said that went on for all of the sixties, and most of the seventies. and he actually tried doing stuff to wreck his career (pouring a bottle of whiskey over his head to look crazy, going to isreal or someplace and wearing a skullcap etc).
he has some good stories though. he told a good one about one time when Bono came over for supper.
edit- but yea, never once did he mention doing drugs, or recording any of his albums except the start of his first one, and one in the late eighties (dunno what its called). he left a lot of himself a secret.

i got this guitar acoustic magazine with a good interview with paul mcartney. it was interesting how he said he never cared at all what equipment he was using, he just cared about the songs. he owned some gibsons and martins and guilds and other very high end guitars, but he always said he liked playing his epiphone the most. which i think is cool, because other guitarists you see only use like the most expensive guitar they can find, and then they buy tonnes of them. paul only used a few different guitars in his career.

yeah, when i was little my dad introduced me to Jeff beck, and im 15 now. I didnt think much of him, but now he my favorite. Im also noticing tons more classic rock fans. a lot of my friends play guitar as well as me, and we get more out of classic rick than modern rock. rock bands that have guitar these days seem to not be putting much effort into playing it the correct and only way. they put hardly any creativity into it, and it just gets boring.
just putting my thoughts in everyone. :)

Good first post, most people just blast all other music like rap. It'll be nice to have a Jeff Beck fan in the Classic Rock thread.

hey livewired if you are looking for slide guitar songs look into George Thorogood, he's an amazing slide guitarist. Allman brothers have some great ones. Clapton had a few.
are you looking for ones to listen to? or play yourself?

i got this guitar acoustic magazine with a good interview with paul mcartney. it was interesting how he said he never cared at all what equipment he was using, he just cared about the songs. he owned some gibsons and martins and guilds and other very high end guitars, but he always said he liked playing his epiphone the most. which i think is cool, because other guitarists you see only use like the most expensive guitar they can find, and then they buy tonnes of them. paul only used a few different guitars in his career.
I have that issue. Very interesting, although I find guitar world acoustic to be too short. I play mainly electric anyway.

i usually don't bother with magazines anyways. we have a bunch laying around at work, and i read them sometimes if my student doesnt show up. i'm more of an acoustic guy, but either way is fine.

i've never heard Rising, maybe i will look into it.
so today as i was looking for amps, i was very disappointed. I went to about seven different stores here in Calgary, and only one store had the head i wanted, and all the cabinets i wanted were either in horrible condition used, or overpriced new.

Thickasabrick is right. Talking about your own issues and such is for the community thread. This is for classic rock stuff and it almost got closed once because we were very off topic.
All crying about **** should be re-directed into the community thread.

I know i'll get crap for this, but I was listenin to the radio the other day, and that band Silvertide came on. I gotta admit, they can pull of the classic rock thing very well without sounding lame like Jet or one of those bands. I actually kinda like them. Not a lot of bands have been able to do this besides them and maybe the Black Crows.

I said Beatles compositions not compilations. I meant: do you prefer John Lennon's, Paul McCartney's, George Harrison's or Ringo Starr's original songs better?

They remind me of Ac/dc in the aspect of lame, trivial lyrics and the same type of rockin' guitar solos. Exept Ac/dc's like 4872672687265876872 times better.
The Silvertide stuff i've heard isn't very memorable.
They still kick the crap out of 99% of modern mainstream music.

John Lennon's stuff was the best fo sho.
