Rock n roll and classic rock are pretty much the same thing. At least I think they are anyway...
classic rock is just a term 2 describe older rock.. ofcourse its the same bands like led zeppelin and the who and jethro tull r ROCK obviously 30-40 years ago peopl didnt refer 2 them as classic rock musicians

[QUOTE=rock not roll]

In the 60s and 70s it was all about the music. People listened to entire albums at a time and explored music..

QUOTE]
I know what you mean. Today people buy records and look for the song on the radio. Then when a new one appears on the radio, they listen to that song. Pathetic, if you ask me. I've thoroughly listened to every album i own and have ever owned. Sad, sad world.

^Time changes all aspects of life. This just proves that it, unfortunately, effects music too.

LedZeppelin629
06-23-2004, 12:09 AM
Actually, it effects people's outlook on music. As time went by, and music was mixed and shifted more, people became out of touch with music as we like it. Music in all forms has changed. We are now faced wiht music just hoping to make it big in the mainstream. 30 or 40 years ago, it was about the music, and only the music. Today, it's totally the opposite. I remember, when i was(sadly) in my punker phase, i remember thinking "we're going to be SO rich". I hated myself after i realized how much i really loved music, and now i'm never going that way again. Maybe, one day, if there are enough of us, we can bring back the days of it being about MUSIC, not CASH.

ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?

o and for u classic rock fans, the crime of the new century was that the Yardbirds new CD, Birdland, recieved no attention at all. that deserved a grammy, or 6.

so are there any other classic rock fans out there, and even if ur not, have u been noticing somewhat of a revival in interest for that sort of music?

Classic Rock is definitely experiencing some sort of revival, i've been listening to classic rock since i was 2 about 13 years ago. I've loved all the music and mainly because my parents were always listening to it, now all of a sudden kids in my highschool are getting back into classic rock and it's incredible. If you go to most schools you'll see kids with their guitars sitting outside and they're playing the classics zep, beatles, floyd... its great!

Listening to a whole album is always a great experience (unless the album sucks).

You'll always pick up a song that has meaning for you.

RockAndRoll
06-23-2004, 01:36 AM
The best part about listening to whole albums is that you actually get to hear new songs, and you find one of those songs that you may not have heard before but you wonder why the hell it hasn't already been declared the best song of all time, and then while listening to another CD you relaize it's because there can't be 2 (or 3 etc).

1966-1973 was the rock n' roll rennaissance, if you ask me...

I didn't read through all 62 pages because, frankly, that would take several hours that I am too lazy to waste...

Anyway, I'm going to take a stab and say that Kansas probably wasn't mentioned too often. "Carry on Wayward Son" deerves serious respect out of all classic rock fans, as well as "Dust in the Wind" and "Point of Know Return"...

Yes is also a great band, and Rush is still rocking today...

And Steppenwolf. They practicly invented metal...

And Iron Butterfly needs to get recognized for "Ina Gadda Da Vidda"....

A revival? That would mean either increased listening to old bands (not gonna happen if they aren't on mtv or played on a radio station that targets the youth) or new bands trying to sound like older bands (also not going to happen). That's why vinal is remastered onto cds so we can listen to them forever. No need for good new bands if we have cds from when music was good.

probaly the reason more compilations are coming out is becasue the bands that bring out compilations are more than likely out of their prime and they probaly want to realase a greatest hits because they either have split up some band members have died or w/e the reason.i do think that the albums are alot better than the compilations. often times compilations skip over very good songs but they did not put them on there because they were not popular or they were not a hit single.

Okay since this thread needs some new conversation instead of just weather or not it's a revival and i was reminded of these while i was away for a few days here goes.

Musicals done by classic rock bands... your opinions?
These aren't like guys and dolls or anything these are movies that have been made to the music of concept albums, the two that i know of, and have seen being the wall and tommy.

Tommy is obviously put to the music of tommy, which as i'm sure most of us know is a concept album by the who featuring this deaf dumb and blind kid. His father died in the war and never had a chance to meet tommy, then his mom gets together with another, very unpleasant man, which I beleive is the cause of tommy's lack of senses. Anyways i quite liked this movie, it was interesting, good music although some scenes were a bit crazy (acid queen and such) it was generally very good.

The Wall, obviously based of Pink floyd's "the wall" and set to that music the wall is more disturbing and more sort of confusing (not the best word by I can't think of anyother way to put it) then tommy. Like tommy the main character (a singer named pink[played by bob geldof]) lost his dad in the war. The movie is about not only the death of his father but his experiences with drugs etc... basically i guess the story of his life. There are both "real" scenes and animated scenes and over all the movie is pretty disturbing, i didn't enjoy it as much as tommy, and you definitely have to be in the right mood to watch scene after scene of watching this man's horrible anxiety.

Kind of but not really. A lot of people think that it's about roger's life however this is untrue, although there are similarities between roger and pink (dad dying in the war being the most obvious).

anyways if you've seen the movies or know of others what are your opinions?

I think classic rock has always been popular with a certain group of people (mainly musicians), and always will be, even though it left the mainstream. That of course, is what makes it classic, it's longevity and timelessness.

It certainly has longevity, do you think it'll last as long as lets say classical music has? I hope it does, but I think If it were to it would likely only be a very select few bands that are listened to, and it would probably be grouped into a larger period of time, and not nessecarily recognized on it's own.

See if you can find an animated movie called "Heavy Metal"...Led Zeppelin and others played the music for it. I saw it in a theatre in San Diego 1981 or 1982. It was pretty cool.

Want some other Classic rock to seriously check out...Nazareth (Hair of the Dog and Love Hurts, etc.) and you have to check out Robert Plant's (Zepp's Lead singer) solo album "Pictures at Eleven" The song "Big Log" is completely bad to the bone if you like crystal clear pure guitar, as well as many other good songs on the album.

Jackson Browne was decent, Bad Company is cool as well as 38 Special, Steve Miller Band. Love Dire Straits, LZ, ZZ, and all the regular picks.

A TRUE Classic Rock enthusiast would have to appreciate Steely Dan and I gotta give tons of credit to one of the very best and underappreciated real rock performers....Mr. Bob Seger!

classic rock is the greatest thing in the world. musically at least. i hate bands trying to recreate the sound, because its just pointless. great classic rock bands werent trying to recreate anything. it was a new sound. if bands now want to be really good, they should try and do something new that is actually good. not just recycle old stuff.

Everyone autmoatically acknowledges Hendrix. It's a given, and shouldn't really need to be repeated.
(and I know there are people who like to go on about how 'overrated' he was, but overrated or not, everyone has to appreciate the skill he had at making superb music)

Anyway, as for classic rock, I've been recently listening to Deep Purple's 'Made In Japan'.

Veteran of the psychic wars
07-03-2004, 01:57 PM
I heard a film critic on tv, define 'classic' as something 'which is as enjoyable every time it is seen/listened to/read as it was the first time'. I think that's a good description. Real 70's rock etc lasts, while this new age, hard rock crap is throwaway rubbish.

Badmoon

I think Hendrix is overrated (refering to two posts up), his Blues seems waterd down, yet he really tried to accosiate himself with it. His Rock was of course good though.

Veteran of the psychic wars
07-03-2004, 02:00 PM
Yeah, wether or not something Hendrix did was good or not so good, you have to respect him for the fact that he was genuinely trying to make good music.

P.S. Is there really not a single other person here who likes wishbone ash? I know their later stuff was hit and miss, but 'Argus' is a perfect album.

Southern Rock really is just an extra word to describe a band. I don't really think that there are ways to point out a Southern Rock band. Unless they have some kind of Confederate flag flying around. It is noticable that they are all influenced by Blues, so I guess you can use that do describe it, but a lot other bands do that. The sub genre should be called "Blues influenced Rock that comes from the south".

That show was the most amazing experience ever. It was sooo much fun. as well as doing a bunch of his robert johnson covers he pulled out alot of his other stuff, including layla, I shot the sherif, Badge, Sunshine of you love, Wonderful tonight and the list goes on and on. All the musicians were amazing keyboardist, organist, guitarists, drummer (steve gadd!), bassist. Every body got a long solo (well more than one) except bassist and drummer (although the bassist in the group that opened had a solo.). The organist did great soloing, he'd sort of played whatever he was doing (he played a sort of laugh as he looked to be laughing) for a bit and did a bunch of other great stuff. The guitarist playing alongside clapton was playing left handed with the strings reversed. And for the encore, they had the lead guitarist from the other group, who, played his guitar on sort of a table in the same way jeff heely plays come out and play as well. All in all the show lasted 3 hours, and it was absolutely amazing, my hands were sore from all the clapping by the end. Maybe i'll talk about it more tommorow, but right now it's 2:30 in the morning.

I drum and write in a band right now and we're all about classic rock. We definetly have that Rock 'n' Roll sound and things are going pretty good for us now, I hope to have some of our songs that we recorded on the web soon so u can all check it out, tell us how it sounds to u. Were kinda young I guess but we've all been playin our instruments for a while and i'm not gonna lie, we rip, especially live gigs. Were HEAVILY inspired by Zeppelin, Black Sabbath who I can't belive none of u posed for favourite bands, with out Sabbath you would not be listening to your heavy metal sha-nan-a-gins lol. The Who and our guitar player loves The Doobie Brothers. So I'll post a song up once we get it copywrited ASAP

Motown is the root of popular music. It has played a huge roll in the history of music, and classic rock would not be the same without it. Motown will always be welcome in this thread :)

That's the answer I was looking fo, but I do beleive that's not the only song of theirs in the movie (when they're going into new yorkand they find out he's not a virgin it's playing misty mountain hop if I remember correctly).

That is why I do not beleive that dazed aand confused has any of their music in it.
