The Hendrix Box set owns. There are many cool covers on there, such as "Like a Rolling Stone", and "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band."

I'll sling a question out there: what makes "Born to Run" better than "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" or "Runnin' with the Devil" (both of which were popular contemporary rock songs)?

The Grateful Dead usually put on tape whatever they were doing during the time. Of course a lot of different influences were pasted around, and since each member wrote at least one song, there'd be tons.
But their albums mostly varied.
S/t - Psychedelic + Rock n Roll
Anthem Of the Sun - Psychedelia
Aoxomoxoa - Psychedelia (But with a lot more going on)
Workingman's Dead - Roots
American Beauty - Roots + Psychedelia + Rock n Roll
Wake of The Flood - Jazz + Roots
Mars Hotel - Reggae + Jazz + Tons of stuff
Terrapin Station - Soul + Funk + Gospel
Shakedown Street - Reggae + Blues
Go to Heaven - Rock n Roll
In the Dark - Reggae + R&B + ect
Built to Last - Soft Rock + ect
Some of those were very hard to describe.

i always get kind of bugged when some of my mellow friends who listen to indie and bob dyln type stuff try to tell that the beattles created rock n roll....same people who say that the doors are rock band...
I am not into thrash death metal or 7 string bass guitar crap but still:
the heart of rock is distortion!....am i to assume that by definition led zepplin was the first rock band?
I would say that rock came from a mix of country n Blues (most 70s guitar riffs are blues based)....
during the time of the beatles: Page, Clapton, hendrix and jeff beck were trying to find that rock sound (most of them with 'the yard birds') the band eventaully split and 'the other yardbirds' became led zepplin...Hendrix found that rock tone...Clatpton eventially found it...
I guess wat im tryin to say is:
Rock found its roots in guitarists trying to bring blues riffs into counrty/RnB...
Rock started officially in 1969 anything pre was the root of POP.....

Rock started officially in 1969 anything pre was the root of POP.....
umm...k let me just think how im going to phrase this.
oh ok i got it: YOU ARE WRONG!
most would consider it excactly the opposite. many artists that were around in the sixties claimed that real rock ended when dylan and the beatles came about (early sixties). Jim Morrison started the mantra "Rock Is Dead" around the late sixties, because its true. real rock and roll wasn't around anymore, but the public accepted what they were now hearing as rock. I wouldn't consider Zeppelin real rock, they had just as many folk/blues/or even "pop" songs as they did rock songs. Grateful Dead couldn't really be considered true rock, neither could the Doors, or Sabbath or any '69 and on bands.
when i think of rock and roll, i think of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley. Those guys are rock and roll. I'm not saying sixties and seventies music wasn't good, but you can't make the statement you did, without thinking of what Rock music really is.
edit- schools really boring today, sorry for making three long posts in a row.

Your statement after this one is much more intelligent. I make these judgments after I have heard these bands for such a very long time. Of course it is opinion, but I can back each of those statements.

I haven’t actually seen all of it. My friend has it and I watched some of it though.

Well, writing wise, I could easily say (though opinion) that The Grateful Dead wipe all of those bands clearly out (maybe not The Beatles though). Skill wise, I believe they are more original than each. I believe Jerry Garcia is a much more accomplished guitarist than Townshend, Page, Harrison, Richards ect. His is surely one of the greatest acoustic guitarists ever. He was a very talented finger picker, and quite good on slide.
Technically, I also believe Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead is a more proficient drummer than the rest. However, each could not take them in numerous fields.
Phil Lesh isn’t as talented as John Entwistle. Though Lesh is very influence and original. The only definite factor each other band has over The Grateful Dead is singing. Though that can be debated if I you count Donna Jean Godchaux, but she wasn’t in the band for that long.

I remember you saying it was good and I decided to pick it up. So far I've only heard the first song (and I really liked it), so I'm excited about the rest of the album.
Skill is completely irrelvant when it comes to how good a band is. And everyone has a different opinion about what sounds good.
Your article won't work unlessyou want to try to prove that they're the most skilled band ever at their instruments, and that can't possibly be done.
The only thing left is to prove that they were more influencial than any other band.
Trying to say that they're the best anything else is irrational.
Any article would have to be 100% opinion in a subject that is subjective.
Good luck :)

How so? How is it weak? Give me some reasons.
Allman Brothers Band can easily be seen as more influential, better instruments/music--lyrics probly not, but that's 2 out of 3 so yeah.
Dylan could take lyrics and influence, that's 2 of 3 too.
Beatles could pretty easily take 3 out of 3 along with Zep and Floyd.
But me saying all of that is opinion (I guess although I truly believe its fact)
but if I really tried I bet I could make arguments that Lynyrd Skynyrd > Grateful Dead even though you may feel there is no comparison.
It's all opinion though and I think you're attempting to make it a fact that Grateful Dead is the best band of all time.

Of course it is opinion, but I can back each of those statements.
You're pretty much contradicting yourself right thar, but the fact that your making an article tells me that your trying to state that they are the best band ever..or tells me you have too much time on your hands...either/or whatever you win I don't care to argue about this since I only read the last page and saw where you said it was opinion and ****.
EDIT: Eeeyyaakakak ;)

I'm not going to make an article. The whole "I'm going to make an article stating how The Grateful pointless comment.
And don't fool around with the all too common "You have too much time on your hands" statement. You aswell as us, are on an internet forum talking to random people we have never met. We are all wasting our time, and could be doing better things.

Did you say that Grateful Dead lacked lyrics in their music????
There are books and websites devoted completely to Jerry's lyrics and his memory, not to mention the lives people have devoted to the band and following it cross country. If there is one band that comes close to that of the Dead, its the Beatles, there would be no rock, grunge, punk, whatever, if it weren't for the accomplishments of those 2 bands. Think about it

I too think that classic rock is making a huge comeback. Back in the day (i'm only 15...so back in the day wasn't all that long ago) well a couple of years ago...i was the only one listening to zeppelin and the doors...everyone else was groovin to eminem or some ****. Now...a most of my friends listen to zeppelin some kind of 60/70/80's rock bands. Everyone agrees that the new **** sucks.

Your statement is not going over well with me.:(
I still think there would be rock, grunge and punk today without the Dead. The bands might noy be all the same though.
EDIT-To the guy above me. How the hell do you groove to Eninem? You should honestly think about choosing your words better..
ANOTHER EDIT-Your avatar says Metallica is Bad ***, just letting you know.

Yea buddy, im in high school, and i've been to the dead 3 times, phish once, allman brothers, ccr, fogerty, there's nothing like listening to some classic rock hammered. Classic rock is definitely making a come back, now today's musicians need to start playing it again, and not that trash that is on the radio these days. There's only a few good bands left these days now that Phish is broken up, even though they will definitely come back someday.

How so? How is it weak? Give me some reasons.
I really am a fan of the Dead, but compared to other bands, Phil Lesh & Bob Weir are a little weak when it comes to playing skill

In their heyday Bobweirser was one fine guitar player, and Phil Lesh was an amazing bassist, but do you realize how many drugs those two probably have done, it has to slow down your skills a bit.

Once again, not to be repetive, I still wouldn't say that. Personally, I think it's debatable that Duane was better than Jerry. Personally (I've heard them solo side by side) I'd call it practically even. Phil Lesg is surely a better bassist than Berry Oakley. Each band's singer aren't technically great, Kreutzmann and Hart were much more risky on the drums than Jaimoe and Trucks. I will say that Dickey Betts is a better guitarist than Bob Weir. As for the keyboardists, The Grateful Dead have had some more talented than Gregg, and some most certainly not.
/ALL OPINION!!!!

Phil Lesh is looked upon as one of the greatest bassists ever. His style was at one time arguably one of a kind, and his musical knowledge is incredibly great. Not a bad voice either.

Actually you have no idea...I've just needed to place to talk about classic rock..to vent about it..but most people here just kiss your *** and take everything you say like a religion. And try comparing my 130 posts to you 10,000+ including lengthy Cd reviews and stuff. I'm not your average person wasting time on the net. But I've come to the assumption that everyone on forums like these think they are all know-it-alls and pricks who will argue with the door if it slams behind them.

Jam bands that are considered rock: The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule.
I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones that i've heard of.

Little Feat, but they are more of a large influence on the 1st official wave of Jam bands (Phish, Panic, ect).
