That first picture of the electric i think is the same as the on the guitarists in my band uses.

And does anyone else think the banjo looks like it has a remo drum head on it?

Remo makes banjo skins.

And the guitars a Kramer. Your guitarist has an out of date guitar, they don't make them anymore :p.

I do, some people cant appreciate the softer side of Zeppelin.

I wish people didn't consider III completely acoustic(Not saying you do, Woodstock, but just people in general.) All of the first side except for Friends is heavy stuff.

It would of been 100 times better if Neil was there, but he wasn't, and they didn't play any of his songs. :upset: But, it was still good.

Crosby sounded great, Stills was even better at the guitar, and Nash was meh.

I want CD's soooo badly. I've got no money, in fact I owe money, I haven't gotten new CD's in quite some time. Then again I also need a new bass drum head (hopefully sooner than christmas, else I'll just have to stick to rudiments and snare and such) A new metronome and *want* (not need) a new snare.

About $300, and yes.

im assuming your talking american money...or some other noncanadian country because that sounds very cheap for a banjo. we have a banjo at our school that i play sometimes, although the only song i can play is Dueling Banjos (and of course, i get lost once he starts really going).

can you post any songs of you playing your banjo? i wanna hear some.

Banjos rarely break over $700. Plus, at the time, I hardly knew about the banjo. The model I got is fine. It's all about the finger picking.

can you post any songs of you playing your banjo? i wanna hear some.

I don't know how to do any of that recording stuff.

To find out how a banjo solo is played, you must know the rolls. Rolls are basically patterns to help loosen your fingers. Just like scales. Banjo playing commonly sounds random, but is actually and usually all various patterns. It's the picking and speed you have to get use to.

RNR

That's not true. Even got a guitar when he was 15. And learnt banjo later.

I wouldn't say I played guitar, but I commonly practiced chords before I learned how to play the bajo.

Really? I've heard that from a few people before, they said that Garcia was raised on bluegrass and played a bit of banjo before he played guitar.

He was raised on Banjo, but he started playing Rock and Roll, and then thought it got boring. And then took up the banjo, and bluegrass more so than ever. He of course went back to Rock though.

no i wasnt being sarcastic. i didn't know about lennon and mcartney. and im not being sarcastic in this post either. seriously. now everthing i say just sounds sarcastic.

im really good at fingerpicking for guitar. unlike most kids my age, who's only goal is to shred at mach speeds, i prefer trying to pick out bluegrass tunes as fast as my guitar teacher can. im not even close though. using a pick im probably about average for how long i've been playing guitar.

Hehe most kids my age just want to play simple powerchord songs...

Badmoon

Badmoon's Banjo Tips
-------------------------

- Learn rolls. So good, you can name them and play them off the top of your head.

- Learn popular riffs and licks. ex. Foggy Mountain Breakdown opening.

- Know Earl Scruggs.

- Finger pick the **** outta your fingers, with finger picks.

- No obvious Bluegrass songs.

- Use thinner thumb pick while beginning.

ya i teach guitar. i've only been playing for three years though, i just seemed to pick it up sooner, plus i have learned a lot of different styles so i can teach basically anything.

how old are you? i always assumed i was younger than you, but after that "kids my age" statement you sound younger than i thought.

I've just lately been understanding theory for guitar.

thickasabrick
11-30-2004, 11:03 PM
im sixteen too. i played piano for about four years, and then saxophone for a year or so, so i knew basically all theory going into guitar. when i started playing guitar, all i wanted to do is play AC/DC songs. after a few lessons my teacher got me into blues..and after about a year, i stopped bringing my electric to lessons and instead brought my acoustic, it was then i learned the art of bluegrass. its my favourite thing to play now, it seems so happy and lighthearted to me.

but i suppose this is the classic rock thread, and talking about bluegrass is a little off topic.

I've noticed kids only liking popular and well known Classic Rock bands, like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, ect...

They missout on some of the greatest lesser known Classic rock bands. Like The Byrds, or Buffalo Springfield, Big Brother and Holding Company, The Velvet Underground, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Van Morrison, ect. Most of those bands were pretty big in their day, but the kids these days aren't looking for those bands. Usually, they are looking for the heavier, or louder types, but that's only the kids I know.

Classic rock is usually defined by the hard rock sub-genre and thus bands like Led Zep and Deep Purple get more attention. Bands like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and their ilk fall within the folk rock sub-genre of classic rock.

There are some really good, mellower bands that don't get so much attention - Lindisfarne is a good example.

i think you were missing a few words there or something.

i think most kids who listen to classic rock these days just get into bands that they have heard their friends talk about. so one kid may have ventured to listen to zeppelin, and then after a while the whole school listens to them. the problem is that there is more followers than people actually wanting to seek out more bands. i dont think the genre has much to do with it, if one person wore a bob dylan shirt to school..im sure about ten people would go home that day and download a song by him. eventually everyone would like him. people are just sheep.

you're right. i dont think being hard rock has a lot to do with it. even though i find people when they first get into bands like zeppelin, only listen to stuff off of the second album, and then say all the acoustic stuff on the third album is crap. after a while they usually change their mind though. people just need to keep a more open mind towards music, and realize that softer music doesnt mean crappier or girlier music.

That's a very good point. Just because music is softer or acoustic doesn't mean it sucks. Much of it is usually more complex too. Led Zeppelin III is a great example, because it owns so much.

"Tangerine" and "Baby Im Gonna leave you" Is it just me or Robert likes use the word "Baby" in alot of his lyrics?

its not just you...

"Baby baby baby baby baby!" a direct quote from mr plant himself.
i like it though, a lot of people have used that, mostly for blues, but no one uses it quite like robert does...or nearly as often.

what are bars? like hash or something? i was thinking of trying shrooms, im just wondering what the difference between shrooms and lsd are, besides lsd lasting longer. i'm afraid to try it too, just because i have so many underlying psychological problems and i've heard acid can really mess you up in the head.

i have a small pipe. its awesome. (can't roll a joint worth crap). i've had it for a few months, although i just found out that you should take your finger of the little hole on the side yesterday. mine was 20 canadian.

does anyone here know any musicians, besides Syd (who had enough problems already) who died/went crazy from lsd? cuz i know jim morrison did it every day for a long time, and then he slowly stopped doing it and started drinking every day. but it seems once he stopped doing acid, his health started going downhill. his drinking was killing him, he started doing coke and heroin, and then he died.

the ironic thing is..is that he resented the rest of The Doors by the end of his days, and refered to them as "a bunch of heads (potheads)." but it seemed his choice of drugs ended up killing him.

I like how he treats the harmonica like a real instrument. Only a few other people (Bob Dylan, Robert Plant on a few Zep songs) do that.

i've never heard him play harmonica. i've heard a lot better players than bob dylan and especially robert plant though. bob dylan is probably my favourite though, just because i like his music the most (he isn't the best harmonica player). i never even though robert plant as a harmonica player in any sense. he's probably more of a tambourine player than a harmonica player.

and i taught one of my students how to play mr tambourine man last night...the student had never heard of bob dylan.

Plant played the harmonica intro on When The Levee Breaks and again on a song from Houses Of The Holy (I forget which one, I need to buy that **** album).

He is definitley better than anyone you have ever heard. And Blues Traveler aren't strait up Blues. If that was true, I probably wouldn't like them. They an occasional poppy version of it, but mostly a fast loud version of it.

I'd also recommend "Blood on the Tracks", "Blonde on Blonde", "John Wesley Harding", "Bringing it all Back Home", and "Nashville Skyline" by Dylan
"The Who Sings My Generation", "The Who Sells Out", and "Quadrophenia" by The Who (obviously)
"Disraeli Gears" and "Wheels of Fire" by Cream
The Doors' self-titled album
"Let it Bleed" by the Stones

good choices there Disconnection Notice.

what is considered the best Rolling Stones album? you usually hear critics and fans consider one or two albums the best by a band, but i haven't heard anything like that from the Stones. any opinions?
