Jefferson Airplane anyone?????
howz about Janis Joplin?????
Badmoon
06-05-2004, 12:34 PM
^ Well, we haven't really talked about Janis, but I brought up The Big Brother and the Holding Company. They are the definitive Blue/Psychedelia band in the 60's. :)
Jefferson Airplane, I'm probably the biggest fan of 60's Psychedelia/Acid-Rock/Blues ect... But the Airplane are hit or miss for me. Similar to Yes, I find them to be a band that can really screw up a song that is going good, but has some other great songs to back the screw up up.
I never really got into JeffersonAirplane. But i'm always learning more about classic rock so I would be open to download suggestions.
And yes, Janis Joplin has a very cool style and great music.

Thanks for the avatar badmoon.
About almost famous, it's not a true story but it is based on cameron crowes experiences as a journalist, so it almost is.
I'd also agree that elton john is an bit odd, but i enjoy his music.
p.s someone mentioned bluebird a while ago, I love that song.
Yes I like Elton John a lot. He has a great voice.

Try to analize this though.
Get a picture of the band Bad Company, download their self titled song, compare it to some songs Jason Lee sings on the movie. And then tell me it's not true.
The band also could be Led Zeppelin, but I only say that because Still Waters drummer uses one of Bohnam's drumset.

So while you guys are having this discusion I have one of my own. This whole time today I was thinking about how "This is Spinal Tap" makes fun of metal bands. So what if they had like the same idea for the movie except it was with jsut like jam bands or classic rock bands, stuff like that. Let's think up of some funny stuff that they could include. Or you guys can just blow this of if it sound mega gay. Oh, did anyone notice my post about Gov't Mule a page or two back. Check it out if you haven't. I'd like to hear your peoples opinions. Hey, im back again :)
Havent heard the rolling stones talked about much, i think there pretty good, but not on par with my favourite classic rock artists.
Im curious to what your favourite solos are; maybe just give 3
1. Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd
2. All along the watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
3. Detroit Rock City- Kiss

Best solo? Any live version of Dazed and Confused. I have a couple bootlegs where Pagey goes 15 minutes or more. It's always ridiculously good.
I see all these kids my age wearing Pink Floyd shirts lately but I'm wondering if it is just a style or if they are really into the band? I'm tempted to ask them to name a song other then "Another Brick in the Wall part 2".
Pretty much most stuff from the 60's/70's (some 80's) was great.
Zeppelin (of course), Pink Floyd, Velvet Underground, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Rush, etc. All excellent and worth many a listen. I could go on but my list would be far too long.

ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?
o and for u classic rock fans, the crime of the new century was that the Yardbirds new CD, Birdland, recieved no attention at all. that deserved a grammy, or 6.
so are there any other classic rock fans out there, and even if ur not, have u been noticing somewhat of a revival in interest for that sort of music? i have noticed that but there are ppl that say they like real rock but they dont and it pisses me off
PS bands to check out
ZZ top
blue oystur cult
doors
deep purple
cream
jimmi hendrix e.

talkin heads

We haven't talked about the talking heads much. Maybe it's because they aren't the hard rock type of classic rock. My mom got me "Fear of music" and it's pretty good.

Depends what you're into.
Their earlier stuff ("Rush" and "Caress of Steel") sounds very similar to Led Zeppelin. Although they had a different drummer at the time, it's still quality all around. "Fly by night" got a little softer.
Their prog-rock phase ("2112" and "A Farewell to Kings" most notably) is nothing short of spectacular. Geddy Lee's rolling basslines, Neil Pearts frantic, spot-on drumming, and Alex Lifeson's diverse compositions are some of the best music you'll hear from that time period. Their songs had especially amazing structure.
Their 80's period was very synthsizer heavy..."Signals" and "Moving Pictures" were the two best albums from this time.
If you want their most popular or better tracks...try:
Lakeside Park (its about the EX in Toronto...they're hometown boys to me! It's weird to know exactly what they mean.)
In The Mood
Bastille Day
2112 (The full 20 minute track, its an epic story)
The entire farewell to kings album
The Spirit of Radio
Tom Sawyer
YYZ
Limelight
Subdivisions
New World Man
The Analog Kid
Distant Early Warning
The Big Money
Earthshine
Those were all song titles except for the whole farewell to kings album. Can't pick one song, it was so well done. Stick with anything they did before 1983 and your in for one great listen.

Yeah, I bought The Jeff Beck Groups Truth. Great stuff :thumb:. Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on Bass, and Beck on guitar :thumb:
Ok I really like Led Zeppelin adn Jimmy Page but i'm tired of all of the fans. They are convinced that Page was the greatest guitarist ever. Now he is very good but he's not the best. I say that's he's overrated by the Led Zeppelin fans.
I agree that Walsh is a better soloer than page. There are many people who can solo better than page. Page's solos are most of the time short bits of blues scales are really fast things that last 30 seconds. David Gilmore, Neil Young, Jeff Heily, Dicki Betts, Duane Allman, Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton all do solos that I enjoy more (if I did a top 15 Page would probably be on there).
Page is overrated!

The Darkness is aiming in the right direction for bring back the sound of classic rock, their singer is good, music videos are gay, and there guitar is sub par. It just doesnt have the guitar playng that people like, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshed, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, or Brain May. But their singer is high pitched and thats important. There are too many rock bands in today's day in age that have there singers mumbling in a low inaudiable drone voice. They all sound the same. I cant tell the difference between Creed and System of a Down singing wise. Or Nickleback for that matter.
my fav bands are:
1. LED ZEPPELIN (gods of rock)
2. Pink Floyd
3. The Doors
4. The Beatles
5. The Who

7. Queen
8. Van Halen

And of course there are more hugely popular Classic Rock bands that should be known forever. Like, The Who (My favorite). They make music like no other. Each member was fabulous, all craftman. Or The Grateful Dead, who defined a generation, and started a long line of San Fransico bands. Or Crosby, Stills Nash, and Young. Who in many ways were the American, more talented Beatles. They had it all. For most Classic rock listens, that band is usually over looked, and The Grateful Dead.
I recomend all Classic Rock listeners to listen to these lesser known Classic Rock bands
Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Hollies, Blind Faith, Big Bro and Holding Company, The Mother of Invention, The Lovin' Spoonful, ect. There is just to much to name.

I love Classic Rock! I'd venture to say 95% of the music I listen to is Classic Rock. Some of my favorite bands are the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Dead, Rush, Jethro Tull, the Who, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles (I never recognized how good of a band they were until I really looked at them.) I could go on forever, I practically like all Classic Rock bands. I guarantee if I never heard of a band, and I listened to it I'd like it if it is in the Classic Rock genre. I have never found a band yet from this genre that I don't like. Classic Rock ROCKS! All this **** today sucks, all the rap and ****ty rock. I hope Classic Rock comes back in some new form. I'm only 15 years old, I really wish I was born back in the time of these groups but I guess that's the way it works. If I didn't have a computer I wouldn't know much about these groups and probably would be a drone to this ****ty mainstream stuff. I noticed a lot of high school kids also like Classic Rock. You know, Pink Floyd, Zep, the Doors, Beatles, AC/DC, Van Halen. I thought I was a freak at first heh, but when you think about it SO WHAT if you don't follow this **** today. In my opinion, in a (True) Jam Band, each member must play an instrument. Basically labeling those two out (Unless you count Seger's rare apearance on the harmonica, or guitar or something). But L.S. is really close though, they combine various genres, which once again (in my opinion) make a (True) Jam Band.

But that's just your opinion. And yours is not the same as mine. Not that it matters, genres are just guidelines to show similarities between music and no matter what you decide to call it the music will not change, but perhaps your perception of it will.

The Allman Brothers - Better vocals, better guitar playing, better organ playing.

Well, if you enjoy tossing brain cells out, many by many, and you enjoy putting yourself at risk of dieing, then yes. I still would not care to live in Canada. The fact that I can live in this country and live in any climate the world can pretty much offer, and get a job easily, and for a kid who is the out cast of his school and town, that is a huge deal. Also, if you ever want to make it big, you go to the US. It's fabulous, I can also get so much more than most countries can offer. You take the your country, and neighbor to the south for granted.

We'd found ourselves a pretty good spot, about 4 or 5 rows from the stage. As the evening went on, and people started moving, it got a lot easier to work our way to the front. We ended up in the 'Buck zone' about 5 feet away from him
The show was excellent. Everyone, band and audience both, was having a good time.
The overall atmosphere was excellent too, the band had a ton of energy, everyone in the audience was singing along and rocking out, it was such a terrific feeling.
There never seemed to be a break in the pace, the energy of the songs just kept going and going.
R U Ready 2 Rock. According to the crowds response, yes we were.
E.T.I was cool as ever, that final lead up to the outro was so cool, and being able to see Buck's fingers at work on the guitar was amazing.
Lips In The Hills: Excellent.
Born To Rock: Bucks voice sounded great, and that outro solo was blinding!
Burning For You: You know, even though pretty much every live show I've heard has this on it, it doesn't seem to get old.
Career Of Evil: Singalong!
Shooting Shark: I'd only heard the studio version, and a live version from 20 years ago, so I had no idea what it was gonna sound like. The leads on this were fantastic, pure emotion.
Cities On Flame: This rocked so freaking much. And that part in the middle where Buck doesn't use the pick was excellent. I can't describe it, but after the 'speedy pull-offs' sections, he'd play a chord/interval/doublestop/what the hell do you call these things, and each one led off the previous one making a really cool melody type thing.
Eric. B then went and sat over by the keyboards, telling us they're going 'back to the first album now'. From the moment he said 'this is a true story' the crowd went wild, for obvious reasons. Then Came The Last Days Of May: Holy sh*t! Allen's solo was fantastic, and watching everything pick up in pace was undescribable. Buck's fingers seemed to be a blur. Wow!
Eric. B then told us about a UK sci-fi export called 'the behemoth' or something, and after Allen mentioned '20,000 fathoms under the sea' (I think), Eric went on to tell us about the real king of the monsters we were thinking off. Godzilla was great, and if anyone seemed bored with it, it didn't show. During Buck's solo, I'm pretty sure he snuck in some Jimmy Page licks, or at least it sounded like it to me. Bass solo was really cool too, Danny was having a lot of fun. After Bobby's drum solo, instead of hitting the gong, which wasn't there, he hit the tiniest cymbal he could find
Reaper Intro: This thing has taken on a life of it's own! It was amazing, and were those Pete Townshend riffs I was hearing? Sure seemed like it at the time...
The Reaper: Yeah! Everyone really got into it, and I'm pretty sure Eric. B was either whispering his vocals or the crowd was drowning him out, they were that loud. The end jam/outro was fantastic as ever, of course
The band left the stage, and came back after 2 minutes for the encores.
First up, The Golden Age Of Leather, with Allen and then the crowd raising their can of beer on high if they had a beer (and in one case, some bottled water) and turning into a big sing-along.
Then, a tune Eric. B wrote with one of our 'fellow countrymen'. Black Blade: This was so cool, hearing it live. They took out that slow part in the middle and supercharged the song (with at one point, Eric and Danny chasing each other in a circle!)
All in all, an absolutely amazing show!
And after the show, I got ot meet the band for a bit, got them all to sign my the dvd cover.

^IT's understandable though. They are progressive, and in that role, there is going to be some boring moments.

I understand that it's not some people's cup of tea, but i definitely would not call it cheesy, boring and cheesy are two differemt things.

Thank God someone else in this forum listens to the Mothers of Invention. Thank you Badmoon you have mentioned almost all of my favorite bands.

Hmm.... Well, its more of a style of playing. you can ususally tell from the 'sound' and tone of band. Its like rock with a dash of blues. It can be quite broad usually, from soft vocals like Pink Floyd (The extreme soft of Classic rock... sort of) to the hard rock of GnR (extreme edge of 'classic rock'). A majority of the music dosnt use powerchords like other metal and modren rock bands and such. (yea, yea, Smoke on the water...) Its hard to explain. Its called classic because alot of bands that fit into this genere are quite old. there are exceptions tho, eg/ The Thrills, The Darkness... even though aot will argue they arnt classic rock, they tend to try to fit into that mould. Examples of 'pure CR bands/people include': Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Lynard Skynard, The Allman Brothers Band.
DVG.
Edit: KISS are Classic.

that makes sense with the blues influence. thats what most of "classic rock" is built on, and it probably what distinguishes it from today's music. i think that's pretty important in the definition of classic rock.

Wouldn't we still consider a band like AC/DC classic rock even though they have no blues infulence?

Plenty of bands aren't really based around Blues. The Who, other than the begining, largly disbanded from the genre. The Grateful Dead, when they do Blues, that's it, because when they aren't, they are doing a genre not even close to it. And basically most of Psychedelia.

That's understandable
I don't really know how to define classic rock....
Although rock was originally based on blues lots of it moved away from that. One thing that generally holds true is that you can usually pick out sounds better than in lots (but not all) of today's rock music where they may have the guitar playing in the chorus but it's not a real melody or anything, it just sort of creates a wall of sound to back up the vocals. Alot of it sounds more raw in the prudction and stuff, but not all if you consider glam rock bands classic rock. I don't know, to me classic rock encompasses less than many other people on these boards think. For me it's a lot of groups out of the 60's who had something to say, and were a big part of that whole movement. As well as many of the bands into the 70's that may not have had as much to say but followed similar musical styles and were less commercialised although some people will debate this.

Anyways...
Got a copy of the clapton CD "Me and Mr. Johnson" I love it, expecially the way it was produced, very raw sound. It sounds old. It's got some upbeat swinging songs which are really cool. And ofcourse al the musician's who pay on it are absolutely top notch. It was all around very wel done, from the production, to the album cover to Claptons' litte blurb on the inside about johnson's music.
^Sounds good. I don't have that one :(. But i'll download some songs from it and then see if I need it. Eric Clapton is my hero (one of them anyway).

I'm looking for a copy of the bootleg of some recordings never before released by Syd Barrett (also Pink Floyd kinda) called Magnesium Proverbs. It's got some songs like Vegetable Man and Candy and a Currant Bun. I have a version of it which I got from a friend of my mom's who got it from a friend blah blah blah, but it's missing a few tracks that, being a total Floydian, I really would like to own. If anyone has any idea where I could get a copy that would be awesome. (I think you can get it via RoIo's or something).

Of all time by the doors- Break on through, i love that song, i can't help but have energy when it comes on, it's also the first song by them i'd ever heard.
Currently - Tell all the people, it's the first track on soft parade and i love it, it's sort of the same style as touch me.
But then there's other's like light my fire, rider's on the storm, when the music over etc... that are just completely amazing and you've got to o all the actions in the solo and such.

what is wrong with mainstream? don't you realise that Rolling Stones are mainstream too? if you sell records then you are mainstream surely? Plus there are some great musicians today...need I mention the Red Hot Chili Peppers. How about all the rich *** mainstream electric bluesmen B.B. King, Ike Turner, Eric Clapton
I 'm confused now...but I appreciate your argument and would like a discussion. :)

No, that's not true. If you sell records that make it big on the charts, if you have music videos that make it big on the charts. If are on MTV and are actually loved by most music listeners then you are mainstream. The Rolling Stones are not mainstream now. BB King, Ike Turner, and Eric Clapton are not mainstream.
RockAndRoll
06-22-2004, 09:18 PM
If you consider popular and mainstream to mean the same thing there's nothing wrong with it.
If you consider mainstream to mean, consumer whoring, music based more on looks then actual music etc... then yes it's bad.
Everything's wrong with the mainstream these days. The mainstream is for people who aren't real music fans but like to listen to something catchy on the radio or watch mtv and get into the whole idiot culture. There are plenty of good bands out now but the mainstream is just pre packaged crap that apeals to young children and in the case of nu metal and pop punk angsty teens who need an easy way to make an idenity for themselves (if they wanted to get into some prog metal or classic rock that would take work!).
Mainstream bands have taken the focus away from good music. In the 60s and 70s it was all about the music. People listened to entire albums at a time and explored music. They got into the experience and even non musicians cared about the talent of the band. The mainstream has killed that. Now the mainstream has led people away from quality music and made it so good bands don't get noticed. To be a popular mainstream band most bans have to "sell out" which makes the quality of the music suffer.
However if a band is good and finds a record company that will let them do their own thing and they become big that's fine. But how often does that happen anymore?

for the most part the kids just go along with whats popular. they dont even think for themselves.it seems that in the mainstream instead of playing their guitar they just wear it. there is good music these days but ppl just dont look for it. but i still prefer good ol' classic rock anyday :thumb:
