You just admit the diversity is there.

I said there was diversity, but Jpj stated they are more diverse than the Dead.

The Grateful Dead is far less diverse than Floyd.

I'm just working off of this post.

So The Dead are more diverse. So what? Metallica is pretty diverse.... doesn't stop them from sucking. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to directly compare Metallica to the Dead, or say that the Dead suck, but diversity doesn't make the band. I mean, the Stones aren't all that diverse, but they totally rock. Ultimately, this whole thing is nothing more than an opinion argument, because the factors that make a band "great" are entirely subjective. You say Garcia is a better writer than Barrett, but some people say the guys from Linkin Park blow both of them out of the water.

Okay, this can be summed up easily, I believe Floyd are diverse, just not as diverse as The Dead.

Personally, I don't think Floyd's all that diverse. Mostly just dreamy, psychadelic rock. That doesn't stop me from liking them however. In my opinion, they are the greatest band. Ever. I don't enjoy the Dead a whole lot, but based on the instruments badmoon said they use, I'd say they are more diverse.

Im just saying A.B. wasn't that diverse all it was mainly acoustic with a delicate layered vocals.(except for Truckin) Now I'm not saying this album is bad I love it but..... Its not that diverse but thats my opinion

Obviously you need to take a closer look. There are heavy amounts of Electric everywhere, organ, and pedal steel. Let alone a lot of it is overdubbed, stacked, 3D recorded, and layered.

Yea but if the band doesn't use 3D recordings, then you feel alittle more like it's a "live" recording. Any you know what they play in the studio, they can play live as well. (Obviously the Beatles and the Dead can play live, thats not what I was refering to.) It just seems more real to me if you don't 3D record.

I agree. I decided if I was in a band, I would try both, but prefer non 3D, and only use it a little. It seems more authentic to me that way.

Uh, that's all they did from 1960-66.....except for the time to make their movies and record their albums. That's why they quit touring.

I'm pissed that the polls aren't open that long. I wanted to vote for Blue Oyster Cult so bad in #1, but I haven't been online for the past 36 hours, I'm pissed. Is it possible that it can be changed? (or is it gonna move on anyway?)

Well, it would be "live" if they took only one go at a track. Otherwise, if they weren't using the 3D recording, they'd just be playing it live, but taking many goes at the song.

Why do politicians have debates? Why do news channels have Debate shows?

Thats different. In a political debate, you can say "i have the facts right here that so and so did a better job, they are irrefutable truths." if anyone said "it is a fact that pink floyd is the greatest band ever" people would call them an idiot.

Not really Badmoon made reasonable point and maybe Ill cheak out a little more Dead...and maybe not

He did make reasonable points, but its just as easy to say "hey, you should check out the Dead, they're really awesome." Also, him just saying "The Dead are better than Pink Floyd" won't (hopefully) convince you. You'd have to listen to them and make up your own mind. Which can be done by avoiding the argument with a lot less hassle than if you do it through the argument.

yesterday i was teaching guitar lessons, and this one really little guy (in grade 3) seemed totally uninterested in the stuff i was teaching (i would be too). so i asked him what kind of music he listens to..and he replies "rock". so im thinking "oh great, now i gotta teach this kid some blink 182 and simple plan songs". so i ask him who his favourite band is...he replies "Rush". i was very suprised. i tell him im a fan too..and he hits me with such knowledge that i was blown on my @ss. i was pretty impressed.

when did you guys start listening to classic rock? i started in grade six with the Stones.

dam, only 16 and got a post count like that? how long have you been here?!

but seriously, ive only been listening for a little over a year too, and im 16 too. And good work on the Featured Artist things, i would do one but i dont want to take any glory away from you...itd look like id be greedy for respect.

and now to get on some topic of classic rock, I recently got three beatles albums, my first ones beside Beatles 1. Sgt Peppers, Revolver, and Rubber Soul. I havent yet checked on when these albums came out (early or late beatles material), but they are a lot better than i thought. I orignally heard just their good songs on 1, like Come Together, Day Tripper, and Get Back, but these albums really impressed me. Sgt Peppers was very good, but still not deserving enough to be #1 on RS top 500 album list.

But whatever, but i say as a former 'not big fan' of the beatles, to give some of their albums a try first before judging them like that.

Jeeeez. A lot today:

Some of my teachers like classic rock (one likes Robin Trower, another Zeppelin)
I like Bad Moon Rising.
I'd check out Fire by Jimi Hendrix, or Fame by David Bowie (for the mix)
I've never listened to Roy Harper.
I've talked with my dad's friends about music before. Me and one guy were discussing Tommy, and how great Townsend is for writing a concept album.
This only covers page 427.

I started with Zeppelin in 10th grade. Now I'm in 12th. So whatever.

There is nothing wrong with Zeppelin, just because they are the first Classic rock band people get into doesn't mean that they are bad by any means. I can dislike Stairway because it was Heartbreaker that got me into Zeppelin, not Stairway.

Everybody goes through that first classic rock 'Zeppelin' Stage. Most people adore them, and talk about how great they are and will seriously listen to their CDs over and over and over again. Then they occasionally get turned on to this older music, ask their parents for more, like Floyd, AC/DC, whatever...and then its all good from their.

If Zeppelin can get all them kids to change for the better, props to them. They are dam near close to the best band, but only argueably in my book. Theres still alot to be explored, even for people listening to it for over 5 years.

how every person is turned on to classic rock by only Zeppelin all the time, i dont know, but hell...their doing a great job

Soulseek is an ad-free, spyware-free, just plain free file sharing application. It kicks KaZaA's *** any day. With Soulseek, there's virtually no mis-labelings, so no need to worry about downloading Michael Jackson's Thriller instead of Metallica's Enter Sandman, or vice versa. Plus, you can download entire albums at a time (well, one song at a time of course). You need to try it for yourself. Ritalin M. Popsicle showed me the light, and now I'm showing you.

Its beacause they are P2P systems, which open up your computer. They're almost like an open door into your computer. I have a program called Rahpsody. It is sponsored by Best Buy. All you have to do is pay $10 a month and you can listen to music all day online (because the songs you download are saved on their servers). Its legit and it hasn't not caused me problems like Kazaa, and Winmx has done to me in the past.

ok ok, i admit it, i'm a classic rock nut. i love led zeppelin, the beatles, the who, eric clapton, the doors, and so on. most of the bands i listen to broke up years before i was born. at 17, nearly every song on my playlist is older than me. but is it just my imagination, or is classic rock experiencing sort of a revival. i am running into an increasing number of classic rock fans my age. at my school (an all boys high school), the school newspaper took a poll of everyone's favorite genre and band. led zeppeling got 5th and the beatles got 6th, behind that rap crap. classic rock made up a large percent of ppls favorite genre. is this just by me, or are other ppl noticing this too?

o and for u classic rock fans, the crime of the new century was that the Yardbirds new CD, Birdland, recieved no attention at all. that deserved a grammy, or 6.

so are there any other classic rock fans out there, and even if ur not, have u been noticing somewhat of a revival in interest for that sort of music?

I soo agree with you. Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Eagles, etc. I love classic heavy rock. There is something special about it, that the music of today just lacks.

Reason classic rock is coming back: a lot of people still smoke pot. there is little drug-influenced music nowadays, so stoners listen to classic rock. potheads are popular in school, so people copy them.

I once reviewed Deep Purple in Rock.

You havent even heard Machine Head.

Zeppelin owns Deep Purple.

Am, I the only one here thats still listens to Zeppelin??

Machine Heads a great album! I think every instrument has at least 3 solos through the whole thing. I was pretty surprised when i first got that album...it was my first Deep Purple, and the guitarist didnt do one solo with disortion. Still great though. Lazy, highway Star, and Smoke on the Water are some of the best songs ive ever heard. the only one i dont like that much is Maybe im a Leo.

Whoever said Deep Purple owns Zeppelin really hasnt heard enough of any music.

And someone asked me why i like Zeppelin so much, and what i responded wasnt answering their question, but directed to some on else...i think, i dont remember. But really, i just love there range of style, from acoustic to hard rock, and blues, though i didnt like them much after Physical Griffiti. Even though Jimmy wasnt the fastest most insane guitarist ever, he was still incredible. he truley mastered the guitar, from over 10 or 15 different tunings, ranging from acoustic 12 string to double neck gibsons, and could get any sound he wanted out of it. What i like most about Zeppelin is they didnt play the same exact material at their concerts. Songs like Dazed and Confused, How Many More Times, Black Mountain Side, and We're Gonna Groove are incrdible to watch. Their Bassist is probably one of the best next to Flea and Geddy Lee, and outstanding all-around Musician. Plant had such a wide vocal range, even for people who think its annoying, its still appreciative. and Bonzo is the god of drumming as clapton is to guitar. yes the others are close, but for what he accomplished, its amazing. As a drummer, i know what equipment he uses and unlike neil Peart 100 piece monster set, Bonzo only had a 5 piece set and a single drum pedal and still puts up incredible compition.

That description of Zeppelin came out longer than id expected for a brief summary, but i personally think Pink FLoyd is the best band...just for the record. Zeppelins probably my 3rd fav

I soo agree with you. Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Eagles, etc. I love classic heavy rock. There is something special about it, that the music of today just lacks.

:thumb:

Pink Floyd... heavy?? They're not really all that heavy, more just psychedelic and super laid back. And I haven't heard much by The Eagles, but I wouldn't classify what I've heard as heavy...

Pink Floyd and the eagles defintaly dont qualify as heavy.

Hmmm, I haven't heard enough of music? I would think you'd say something like that to someone who thinks AC/DC and/or Zeppelin are Gods above all else (the newbs). I would think that someone who liked Deep Purple for more then just Smoke on the Water probably knows what they are talking about.

You're right, I haven't heard a lot of Zeppelin. I've only listened to II and VI. I must say, though, early DP wasn't all that great. But Deep Purple in Rock is seriously great though.

(Abbey Road is still the best by far)

Not soo much Lynyrd Skynyrd though.

Also not much Guns and Roses

Them two do have their really bad songs, but they have them couple great songs that make me have to change my mind. If you dont like these bands much but havent heard any of these songs...

Guns N Roses - Civil War; Sweet Child O Mine; Dust N Bones; or You Could Be Mine.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird; Yesterday's Gone; Workin for the MCA; That Smell; or Blues Melody if your into really long crazy guitar solos, with ONLY the guitar

Civil war could be one of the best songs ive ever heard, Guns n Roses are too overated on Welcome to the Jungle. Lynyrd Skynyrd are great musicians, but i never had a big thing for Southern music either.

Van Halen could qualify, but they just have too many songs that annoy me. Outragous guitarist though, ill give em that.

Mine would be Clapton>Page>Beck

Ive always appreciated Page as my favorite guitarist, but i do think Clapton is better than him. I think only because Pages style is more sloppy than Claptons. I think they out do beck by a long shot.

I remember my first Yardbirds CD-Roger the Engineer.

I couldnt believe some of the best guitarist around sounded like that! I was expecting crazy guitar solos everywere, and just, great guitar work. After hearing songs like Physco Daisies, He's Always there, and Turn Into Earth, i couldnt believe it. and dont get me started on the Hot House of Omargarshid...that song cracks me up.

I think that CDs a joke, but you know, i still think its pretty good for some reason.

They're all good...I like Clapton and Page, though maybe even Page a little more. I'unno. I like Derick and the Dominioes, then Cream, and "Cocaine", but that was John Cale...but needless to say Clapton has some really good stuff to his own name.

JPJ, i love your custom title...it's familiar, though i can't pinpoint where it comes from... =p

What group has the best singing harmonies??
CSNY, definitely..listen to Country Girl off Deja Vu, right before they go into the last section (which is Country Girl)...Goosebumps...i'd call it epic =p

I decided to start listening to Zeppelin again like in the last week. I realized that Jimmy Page wasn't the arrogant bastard I thought he was, so I kinda dumped the whole "dislike zeppelin because they're arrogant" thing. Because it was wrong. So I spent some quality time with their dvd this weekend. Its good stuff.

Also the polls were hard!
I went with Yes and Floyd.

I was listening to my new Neil & Crazyhorse CD, and he really does some killer electric work on it. I love Hey, Hey, My, My(Into the Black) and a Like a Hurricane.

Welcome to my world :) (like a hurricane is the ultimate song with tons of unneccisary solos that are all about 3 minutes long ;)).

I reeealy like the beatles, as you can tell from the avatar. Revolver is an awesome album, "Taxman" has got to be one of the best song of all time, IMO. gotta love george harrison's solo in that. Its a pity they broke up.
I know this is old, but he needs to know this.

The solo on Taxman was performed by McCartney.
